They clearly do a lot of business, apparently in new hardware. Maybe they have great prices on monitors, etc. The only reason I went there is because they are listed as a certified third party Mac repair location, of which there are not a large number. And my service experience is what I'm reviewing. Which was hilariously abysmal. First, they use an electronic gatekeeping system that makes it basically impossible to communicate with a human being. Even after you've placed your order. No phone numbers. No direct emails. Got a question? Use the website's "leave a message" feature. After dropping my Mac off and not hearing from anybody for SIXTEEN DAYS I decide to use that feature and ask them WTF was wrong with them. Two days later I got an automated message from Micro Center Central Command that didn't say much. In that message I was finally provided with the super secret phone number (301-692-2130 . . . you're welcome). I called. The person who answered was highly defensive and told me that my wait time was super normal and reasonable. He also said that the person who was supposed to look at my Mac was going to do so the following day, what a coincidence. The guy called me the next day. He told me he looked at it. And he told me that he couldn't find anything wrong. Perfect working condition! He just couldn't figure out what the problem could have been. My problem was that it turned itself off after less than five minutes of powering up. The Apple Store Genius Bar had run comprehensive diagnostics and told me the logic board was bad. This turning-itself-off thing had been going on for a long, time. It did it every time. It did that when I dropped it off at Micro Center. It did that when I picked it up from Micro Center. There is no miracle of nature that would have prevented it from happening while in the custody of Micro Center. There's simply no way he could have failed to notice the glariingly obvious problem if he'd actually bothered to test it. Which leaves me convinced that this Mac repair person was simply lying to me, and that Micro Center just took my money for no service provided. The only appropriate reaction was to pick it up from those clowns and take it somewhere else. I chatted with another person in line at the service counter, who was also waiting a long time. Turns out she was also there to pick up a Mac to take it somewhere else, since Micro Center had been a total waste of her time too. I hate to fixate solely on the negatives. But--having no positives to report in my actual experience with this corporation--all I can positively contribute is a forward-looking suggestion for improvement in the future. In that vein, I would actually endorse that the federal government nationalize this company and give its repair operations over to the various state Motor Vehicle Administrations. This change of management would vastly improve processing times and quality of customer service. But, before that happens, you should go to Experimax in Bethesda. Those guys are vastly better at what Micro Center pretends to do. read more

I really like this Micro Center - the staff really knows their stuff and the replacement warranty is not outrageously priced. We've bought several things at this location and their Black Friday deals were better than Best Buy's. We recently bought a Chromebook here and I found it easily online and reserved it. They only had one left, so the online reservation system is great. They sent me an email within the hour that it was ready and I had 3 days to pick it up. We went the next day and it was all ready to go. The check out was painless. We bought an Asus flip chromebook, which is one of the more expensive ones (it was almost $500) but the 1 year replacement warranty was only $79 which I felt was totally worth it, since I have a somewhat clumsy teen who will be using it. Tip: park around back and go up the escalator. There's a lot more parking on the backside of the center. read more

I bought a gaming computer for my son here at micro center which they built. The computer was ready the following day, that's the good news. The rest has so far gone downhill. From the moment he plugged it in, the computer did not operate correctly. We brought it back nearly two weeks ago. One tech said to him that it's likely there's a virus and because we didn't have antivirus software installed it could be the culprit. Shouldn't the salesperson have indicated all of the necessary and/or suggested software needed to have this operational? Maybe that's on the customer to ask or suggest all of the various software packages needed to run this? So we left it for repair. As mentioned, it's nearly two weeks and this hasn't been assigned to a technician. The local phone number puts you to a national line so you can't call the store directly. I've utilized the chat function twice now (am in the queue for a 3rd time) and both times the techs indicated they would pass my questions (ex. when will it be assigned to a tech?) to the store and they would get back to me, and they haven't. So no communication, no assignment, no ability to talk directly unless I go to the store and no computer. read more

As someone who was intimidated at the thought of replacing my very old laptop I'd put it off for a while. I'm thankful to Micro Center for making the process very easy. The General Manager, Mark Irby, directed me to a sales associate and followed up with me to make sure that my experience was a good one. The sales associate, Patrick Epote, was very patient as he answered all of my questions and made sure I had the computer that was a perfect fit. I will definitely go back for my computer needs. My laptop broke and it took them 1 week to even look at it. When the laptop came back it had an exposed wire and started to not function a month later. I have send it back and was informed it would take two weeks to even look at it. I would not recommend there service and repairs read more

Review #200. This is not the type of review I wanted it to be but oh well. I rarely give 1 Star reviews, but this is more than warranted given the series of events that occured. If I could have given Micro Center zero stars I would have. Let's get started shall we? 1. GF's laptop had a broken power adapter which required the motherboard to be replaced (since the power connection is part of the motherboard) 2. Took it to both Best Buy and Crap Center for a repair estimate, both places were in-line in terms of pricing, figured we should take it to Crap Center since they specialize in computers (mistake) 3. Dropped computer off the first week in November, they charge a $70 "diagnostics" charge before any work is done to assess the problem. Diagnostic was not completed until one week after computer was dropped off (unacceptable) 4. Crap Center recommended a data backup since the computer was having the mobo replaced. I dropped off an external HD for the GF, three days later got a call from the tech that the HD didn't have enough space and needed to have some stuff deleted to do the backup... why this took three days to figure out is beyond me, it should have been determined before the backup was started. He said he started the transfer and then it stalled overnight bc there wasn't enough room. WAT? 5. Came in the next day, deleted some stuff from the HD to make room. Backup was finished two days AFTER I deleted the info. FYI, the total amount of data that was backed up was only 60GB... how that took more than 4 hours is beyond me. Oh, and lastly, the data backup cost $60. LOL, that's an expensive drag and drop. 6. Computer was shipped out to god knows where for the mobo install since they don't perform such "complicated" services in-store, three weeks after being dropped off. 7. Two weeks later we get a call from Crap Center saying the computer in the store and ready for pickup. 8. Go to Crap Center with the GF because we want to dispute the data backup & diagnostics charges given it's taken them FIVE WEEKS to replace a stinkin mobo. Of course, the customer service rep there was unable to do anything about our complaints and there was no manager on duty. At 7:30pm. On a Thursday. We had to wait til the next day to come back. 9. We speak to the manager there, Alan Vincent, and tell him about our severe disappointment with Crap Center and the service, or lack there of, that we received. They credited the $70 diagnostics charge and the $60 data backup charge. All in it was $129 and FIVE AND A HALF WEEKS OF WAITING. 10. Shockingly, the built-in video camera doesn't work. GF called Crap Center tech support and was told the camera issue was due to a bad mobo install and the computer needs to be sent back out for repair. !@$^@!%!@!!)%&(@)!!! DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BRING YOUR COMPUTER HERE FOR A REPAIR. ORDER THE PARTS FROM NEWEGG AND DO IT YOURSELF. LESSON LEARNED!! I hate this place. And now we get to do a round #2 with them. I wrote my last review prior to my discovery that the sales clerk forgot to give me back my debit card (and I, due to my frustration and anger, forgot to ask for it back upon checkout). The next day, my bank called to inform me that the cleaning person had called them to let them know that she was going to THROW MY DEBIT CARD IN THE TRASH. Needless to say, I had my account blocked and was issued another card. Why did the store not call me (as all customers provide contact information with each purchase/order)? I will be filing a formal complaint against this store. I have not only received appalling service but also financial security risk from shopping at this store. Came in today to look around. It was busy. Lots of dads looking for holiday gifts, and terrified grandads looking for any kind of help. They had good prices on HDTVs and cameras... seemed to be better prices than at Best Buy... But when I asked the cashier if my purchase was compatible with blah blah, he politely told me to go find a floor person. I explained that I had been in the area of the product already for 10 minutes without help... and he told me what color shirt I should look for... (long pause as I stared at him waiting for him to realize what kind of answer that was... I got nothin'...) I smiled at him, and walked back, replaced the item (and my other impulse buys), and I left empty handed. I might go back after January. read more

Two examples of why shopping at Micro Center is a hassle: 1a) I dropped off a laptop for diagnosis. The technician left me a voicemail asking me to call him back as soon as I could, but when I did, there was no way for me to be connected to someone who could route me to this technician; rather, I was forced to wait until the next representative could take my call. I was given the option to go online to check the status of my, repair, but how helpful is that when I needed to get the results of the diagnosis? 1b) They don't offer any expedited services for repair work. Computers, especially ones used for work, can often be mission critical. As such, why put a ticket with an urgent issue in the same queue as one that is non-urgent? 2) The ole bait-and-switch. Yup, they're pretty notorious for advertising items that are barely in stock for the purpose of getting bodies into the store. To be fair, here are two reasons why shopping at Micro Center isn't the worst thing in the world: 1) Because they are price-competitive and have a sizable inventory, you might be able to find what you're looking for in a pinch, without having to wait 1-3 days as you would if you went through an online vendor. 2) Their salespeople are generally more knowledgeable about their wares than are the salespeople at other big box computer (and other electronics) retailers. While Micro Center's prices are very competitive with the prices of online behemoths such as Newegg, TigerDirect, Amazon, etc., the quality of service doesn't justify this brick-and-mortar's existence. read more

We recently purchased an HP laptop here. The selection was exactly what we'd hoped for and the prices fit our needs perfectly. We were impressed and pleased with our experience at the store, until we had to interact with the staff. The entirety of our experience with the staff was governed by an interrogation designed to elicit precisely where credit for the commission should go. If this had been a simple, single question - fine! That is a reasonable thing for commissioned employees to want to verify. However, in our case our response of "sure, I guess" proved insufficient. We had mostly shopped on our own, so our uncertainly of the justification for attribution of any credit apparently shined through and caused the staff to go into ultra commission mode. "Did **** help you today? How exactly did he help you? If he didn't REALLY help you I'll just take the sale." At this point we informed the employee that we frankly didn't care; we wanted the computer we had chosen and any commission attribution was their problem. We confidently continued, presuming the issue was settled. Nope. Five minutes later the situation escalated when the department manager, Dale Wade, came over to ask more questions. These were not helpful questions like, "how was your experience?" or "can I help you with anything else?" Instead he proceeded to return to the issue of who should get credit for the sale by interrogating us with a series of questions regarding precisely what was said by each employee and pushing us to choose someone to whom he could attribute the sale. The tone he used with us was identical to a manager grilling an employee for doing something wrong in his store, but we weren't his employees, we were his customers. The staff was pushy and the management was worse. I highly encourage people to only come here if you don't have to talk to a human. read more

It used to be that the only place that computer geeks could turn to for some computer parts was on the internet. That usually wasn't a problem because we could read reviews on the products and find a great deal. Not having a dependable brick and mortar store for computer organs became a problem when you couldn't wait for shipping and handling. And that's where Micro Center fills that void. To west coasters, think of Micro Center as the Fry's of the east coast. Filled with enough computer parts and electronics to make a geek squeal, this place will satisfy most of your needs. It's the only place I know that offers a wide enough selection to build a computer from scratch and also has a little cafe. They have a bare bones approach to interior design but I guess it shows in their prices. While I'm sure online retailers can beat their prices, Micro Center has most other retailers beat. They even have out of the box hard drives that are cheaper than their in-box versions - something that you won't find at Best Buy. read more

This microcenter is located in the Federal Shopping plaza, a busy suburban shopping center sandwiched between Rockville Pike and E Jefferson Street. If you're coming during the week and ESPECIALLY during weekend afternoons I suggest parking on the side facing Jefferson because the Rockville Pike parking lot goes from insanity level 1 to level 12 during peak times. Seriously, congress will agree on something quicker than you will be able to find a parking spot in the lot facing Rockville Pike. Kim Jong Un and Barack Obama will have a friendly one-on-one basketball game in Venezuela before you'll find a parking spot there. Ok, maybe not to that extent but you get my point. It isn't the largest Microcenter in the area (the one nearby my old home in Fairfax was bigger) but it should meet most of your technology needs. I haven't used their support team so this review is geared more so towards the retail side of the business. Some aisles are more organized than others and a few of them may incite your claustrophobia but if you're willing to shift through you can find what you need and all of the staff members that I've interacted with were friendly and helpful. Their mobile offerings are rather limited though - I came looking for a small accessories case for my work laptop and work cell phone and was unsuccessful. I wasn't able to find a cellphone case and some other accessories for my work phone as well, but everything else on my list (laptop sleeve, external hard drive case, cheap @$$ home phone to replace the one that died randomly over the weekend) I was able to find relatively easily. Checkout is relatively painless, especially when compared to other retailers in this shopping plaza. read more

Talked to several store associates and got different answers about which motherboard I should purchase. One sales associated I overheard bragging about how he's top three in the country for services. He finally was able to help me out and provide answers to my questions, I ended up not making a purchase because he told me to wait a little bit because a new product is coming out soon. Wanted to add two more hard drives to my desktop. I just happened to be in Rockville and noticed there was a Microcenter there. This particular Microcenter is smaller than the ones i'm used to. I prefer going to the one in Fairfax if I need to get something. Anyway, I grab my Western Digital, and ask the sales guy about extending my power cord and a right angle SATA cable. The head sales guy I guess, asked some other guy to help me out. Dude was post up straight chillaxing while there are lots of customers milling about looking lost. Now @ Fairfax, I would have been accosted by 3 or 4 guys trying to make their commission. Mr. Looky Loo here was acting like I was bothering him. I got ~500 bucks of computer parts in my hands and he doesn't want to help me? For real? "We don't have an extender. We have a splitter" "Well I guess I can't use the hard driv..." Before I finished my sentence he walked off. Never coming to this one again. read more

MicroCebter usually has what I need and things that I may not have known that I needed until I saw them. I always check MicroCebter before other stores and enjoy the ease of shopping at this location. Even when the store is busy, the associates are efficient and friendly. Sometimes some items are lacking depth of selection as other retailers, but overall the store is well worth a visit for computers, parts and peripherals. read more

If you've ever been to a Microcenter store anywhere, you know they're geek heaven. But this brand new MicroCenter is not like those others. It's bigger, nicer, and has more "geek stuff" than any other store I've seen. One of the only computer stores that caters to actual geeks, you can find just about anything to build your own PC here, from individual motherboard screws to the coolest water-cooling rigs. The new store also has a "knowledge bar" (gee, wonder what fruit company they got that idea from?) where you can get a cup of coffee and talk with someone about your computer woes. Sadly, my lone exchange found someone not quite as geeky as you'd hope behind the bar, but I'm told they're still in training. This store is designed to be much more pleasing to the eye than your normal computer store with bare metal shelves. The aisles are clearly marked, the aisles and displays nicely polished wood. They've clearly put a lot of thought into designing their new store prototype. If you need to pick up anything for your computer, this is the place to stop. Also, they have a large Mac section, which is always a plus. read more

I dropped my laptop for a hardware diagnostic. It took almost a month. Over that timeframe I tried texting the store but didnt get a response. I visited the store to see whats going on but was told it was still being worked on. I also emailed the store help desk numerous times. I told them once the diagnostic was completed they should install windows 10. I didnt get a response so I went to the store again. I was told that service didnt get the email to do the install. The service desk then told me it would be $99 for the install plus $100 to save files on an external hard drive. They couldnt say how long that would take. After a month I just took the laptop home and figured out how to do the install. I know things are busy these days. I strongly suggest improved communication to service. read more

The knowledge of sales personnel is very low. If you don't know what you need before you go to the store, you will be in trouble and end up returning multipel times before you have the solution. The product they sell...in house brand is also very poor. I purchased computer there 18 months ago and already components are failing and I only purchase it to run one program on it...X-Plane 11. Most of the stuff they sell is cheap and a little bit sub-par as compared to say costco. But my only real beef is that they canceled three of my in-store-pickup orders. Customer service in this store sucks. ESPECIALLY the Apple section...like uninformed sales rep who try to sell you things that you don't need. HORRIBLE service!!!! Store Manager Marc was completely rude and evident with other staff he has on his team. There has been a previous time where another of his employees was rude by talking back to me with an attitude. I was sold an ipad that they could NOT find. I left the store very frustrated and WITHOUT the ipad 3 (white) WiFi. I waited for more than HALF AN HOUR !!!!!!!! And ended up with a black ipad which I did not want because Microcenter was not able to find the box. I was upset about the lack of efficiency and organization this store showed. 12/31/12 I went back to trade in the ipad in for another and they did not happen. Luckily this time I was spoke to another store manager that handled my situation professionally and calmly. I was able to get the product I went for in the first place. Huge store with tons of cool things to explore! Find something completely random and want to know about it? The staff at Micro Center are more than happy to tell you about it or find one of their specialists to tell you all about it! The store also has a repair station which I have used to fix my laptop! Very easy to use and it took about a month to get my laptop back. There are always good deals at the store and there are a lot of things that have mail in rebate! They also have a PC building station that has expert PC users to help you pick out your parts and help you construct your very own computer! Overall, this Micro Center is well kept and maintained and offers all kinds of products for there customers making each trip an adventure. read more

After my experience here, I may never buy anything from anywhere else. Well, maybe just my tech stuff! Came in looking for a laptop because I wasn't quite sure what kind I needed/wanted. Within 5 mins 2 different associates asked me if I needed help. The guy who ended up helping me was awesome. It was clear he knew what he was talking about, compared to the past experiences I had at mega stores like best buy. He took his time, explained the difference between this and other brands and helped me through the decision making process. I literally can't say enough about this place. Danger! This place is highly addictive due to not only the great deals, but diversity of electronic products. They are very helpful with customer service and know their products. They have good quality electronic accessories and many types of computers. If you're like me, it's pretty overwhelming to go in here, but logically laid out. If you play video games, this is the place for you to upgrade your computer. Their add-on items on the end-caps are really cool too, and the energy drinks they sell are great for trying to comprehend the gadgets they sell. They also have a really good selection of magazines and books. The online store is also great, and they integrate it well with the physical location. I haven't had a computer repaired there, but I suspect they would do a good job. They sell Apple products as well as PCs, and plenty of gaming components. Any place that diverse is going to have a staff that knows what they're doing. A lot of customers can get impatient when it comes to computer repair, etc, so it is challenging to gauge accurately the speed or competence in repair in proportion to industry standards. I only mention that because I have seen negative reviews of similar places. read more

Usually the online order pick up window is faster than waiting in line but not last Friday Night. I had to wait 10 or more minutes behind a woman who was unhappy about her Laptop. I walked around to shop and I actually said to an associate., "The Yelp review is down to 2 stars, I'm about to lower it to one." The only saving grace was the fact that they didn't have the Bluetooth adapter for my PC and gave me a more expensive one at the lower price, just like a couple of weeks ago when I bought Craig Bluetooth Headphones which they called and said they were out of and substituted a JVC brand which would have gone for $60 for the $19.99 price just like the other one. When I want to buy something online and pick it up, I usually do to get it and go, not wait forever. read more

The first time I shopped at Micro Center, I said to my girlfriend how shocked I was to find an honest to god computer store with parts and people who actually know about computers. Another guy walking by just turned to me and said "I know!" with a tone of awe, like we were two wanderers who had just found the promised land. Now really why should a computer store be surprising? It shouldn't, but if you're a real computer geek who has only had access to Comp USA, Staples, and Best Buy for years, then you know the pain of going to a store with a bad selection, ridiculously inflated prices, and staff who know almost nothing about technology (though they'll still be glad to try to sell you something). When I walked into Micro Center and saw a wall of motherboards for sale and bins with mounting hardware I knew I was in a different kind of place. Whereas I'd been greeted with a blank stare before at Best Buy when I asked for a specific kind of RAM, the guys at Micro Center helped me find a replacement fan for an old slot 1 PII and thermal paste to put a new heatsink on another processor without missing a beat. So, if you're looking for a computer store with a good selection and knowledgeable staff, I haven't found a better place than Micro Center. There are, of course, some caveats. First of all, no brick-and-mortar store can compete on price or selection with an online store, and that's true of Micro Center. Second, the employees do work on commission. I found them to be helpful and not pushy, willing to help me find small stuff and not try to up-sell me too hard, but I'd always be careful when dealing with someone working on commission. I still do most of my computer shopping online, but when I do need to grab something at a brick-and-mortar store, I go straight to Micro Center. read more

I'm really glad this place exist. In the south, we don't have microcenter. And for a geek like me, this place is like heaven. Every type of computer hardware you could possibly think of is here. This place makes BestBuy look like a joke, it's actually been a joke for quite a while now. Unlike WorstBuy, the staff here is pretty knowledgeable on hardware and software. I know my stuff when it comes to tech, and these guys give advice to their customers that I know for a fact is solid. I also have to give them credit for not having hiked up prices. From what I've seen their prices on hardware is about on par with sites like NewEgg. Which makes coming here for my parts a lot more enticing instead of shopping online. Unfortunately I cannot give it 5 stars simply for the fact that they can't seem to keep enough cashiers available to handle their volume of shoppers. I feel claustrophobic when I come here. It's the only electronics store that has a low ceiling. It really makes me want to buy what I need and get the hell out. The only reason I come here is if they carry items that Best buy does not have and that I need. Some things I don't like about microcenter: 1) VERY pushy salespeople. I remember seeing a salesman trying to sell extended warranty to a lady who was going back to live in Iran. He was claiming that there were service centers in Iran that could repair the laptop she was going to buy at Microcenter. For real? I'm sure he was spitting bs out of his mouth and she knew that DAMN well too. 2) Return section is too small. There is usually only one person working and the line is REALLY long (at least 10 waiting during peak hours). I waited 40+min in line to return an item. On the flipside microcenter has a large sitting area where you can wait for a customer service rep to come over to answer technical questions about anything you want. I thought that was nice, but I'm not a tech-retard. I can find out what I need to on my own. read more

What a great store. Huge. Great prices. Lots of help. They have dozens of employees walking around, and you can't spend more than two minutes looking for something without one of them asking you if you need help. It's great. And boy do they know what they're talking about. I decided to build my own computer for work, and headed to the computer parts/build your own section. They pulled up the webpage of the software I'd be running, and put together a list of components for a really nice build in my price range. Took them home, built a computer for the first time (I had installed an internal hard drive years ago) in 3.5 hours. Yes, I rock, but it was also a great learning experience and fun. And pretty easy actually. Highly recommended. Definitely my go-to place for anything electronics. read more

This review isn't the store, it's the tech support number shown when you log into microcentertech.com. It was horrible. Polite but truly useless. The guy understood our printer problems but said the best he could do was email a guide. When we wanted him to talk to us and explain the Chrome issues he quite literally hung up on us. The tech center offered no tech support at all. He wanted us to sign up for paid support. All this only two hours after we left the store with two new chrome books. My daughter eventually figured it out but we came close to returning the chrome books because they wouldn't print. read more
