A friend of mine has been getting more into clay shooting recently, and invited me along to check this place out. I pulled into the parking lot on Sunday morning having no idea what to expect. I'd been to a few other ranges and gun clubs, so I know that the experience can vary quite a bit. The parking lot is large and gravel, and there is a field setup for several RV hookups to one side of it. This place hosts tournaments, and people will just stay on site when they do. On the day of my visit in December, there were 2 travel trailers and plenty of open spaces. I don't know if they lease these spaces outside of tournaments or not. Inside the building, they have a lot of merchandise available for sale (clothes, equipment and supplies, knives, and a shotgun store). I believe that they also allow for gun and equipment rentals, but my friend and I already had everything we needed, so we didn't investigate this. The building also has couches, vending machines, and a fireplace to relax and warm up at. The range itself is setup as a circle, and kind of reminded me of walking the track around my high school football field. Each station for sporting clays has four electronic throwers, that all throw in the same general direction. You pay per clay and you're given a card to insert into the machine, which tallies the number of clays used, but we were told that even though you pay up front for a count of them, they give you a handful of extra so that you can throw one without firing (so you can see where they go) and also because sometimes the machines won't throw or a clay will break as it's being thrown. If you're shooting by yourself, there's a way to configure the throwers so that they'll go on a delay after hitting the button to throw, but since my buddy and I were both there, we just traded off who was pushing buttons and who was pulling triggers. The shooting course is a lot of fun, with a lot of variety, and they tell you that the "A-B" pair of targets are generally easier to hit than the "C-D" pair. You can take whichever targets you want at each station though. The targets also include ones that run along the ground ("bunnies"), and one that's thrown from a tower. The facility is also set up for skeet and helice, and they offer instruction as well. A key thing I was surprised about was the level of service. As a novice to the sport, there were plenty of people around to ask questions, and at one station I was even given advice that I was shooting too high. One of our rifles was having issues feeding, and the same person offered some oil to try to solve the problem. When that didn't work he took it back to the building to leave in their racks so we didn't have to carry it around. They have push carts and golf cart rental to make the trip around the range easier, too. Their gun store has a wide variety of rifles at varying price points, but be prepared - this isn't Walmart. The lowest priced used rifle we saw was about $1900, and went up around $20k. That said, you get what you pay for. My friend asked one of the employees to help with fitting me for a shotgun, during which I discovered that I go to shoulder a rifle completely wrong, but was shown how to do it correctly and much more comfortably. read more

Totally awesome place. Staff is very friendly. Pro shop / shot gun sales is great plenty to choose from. Trap is great. Sporting clays course is awesome. Don't be afraid to check this place out they will show you how to use the machines and have some fun. They do have some events on the weekends so call to see if they are going to be busy or not. First timer experience Great place with friendly staff. Reasonable pricing. Pros: Clean, well kept land. The stations are mostly all in the shade. Very nice equipment. Lots of fun and options for shooting! Cons: Lots of walking on gravel. Wear thick soled shoes or else your feet are going to hurt! We were not prepared for that. The card to work the station is easily forgotten and left behind. We had to go back twice. The pencil is not tethered to the clipboard. That went rolling off the board a lot. We also had to carry a lot. Next time we would probably bring a backpack. Suggestions for improvement: Tether the pencil to the clipboard. Very easy fix. Offer the go carts for use for those who may have inobvious mobility issues. Maybe put signs as you leave the stations that say "Don't forget the keycard!" Overall, we were very happy with our experience, but next time we will be better prepared! read more

I was in there this morning to talk to someone about a shotgun for trap and sporting clays. The first gentleman who helped me was very nice and helpful. He then called over a gentleman who had more knowledge than him. I am going to assume that he was the owner or manager. I said that I wanted to get a shotgun for trap and / or sporting clays. But I didn't have several thousand dollars to begin with. His response was well it is what it is and walked off. With that kind of response to a customer, well, I will not be going back for anything, shooting, or anything else. The first gentleman was very nice and pleasant. The second one was not so much. Truth be told, I have more money than I let on, but they will not be getting any. Period needs a course in customer service and a new attitude to go with it. This was a fun experience. Visited with a couple of friends in our early 20's we were looking to come in as complete amateurs and were worried about our reception. They were incredibly nice and non judgmental. They offered some pointers and were able to really make us feel comfortable renting every single piece of equipment. Incredibly cool and clean environment. Awesome for novices while having the feel of a legitimate shooting range. Only downside was the pricing was more than we wanted to pay. However take into the account we rented every single piece of equipment required for trap shooting. Considering the free initial instruction and accommodation it was an okay value. read more

I'm not sure what it is about boys and guns - it's about as natural as ham and cheese. I never really had a notion of participating in such activities but after my first go around with trap shooting I was hooked. There's something about taking a piece of equipment and blasting the $#% out of a flying object - it's so visceral. So after dinking around the Portland area, I was set on taking a lesson to learn good habits and not pick up bad ones. (Personally, I really enjoy taking lessons and learning from people who have the knowledge and the experience to teach them.) And I emailed Vandy at Mid-Valley Clays to sign up for a lesson. Curtis Stone was our instructor and frankly he's just a good guy on top of being a great instructor. We spent 2 hours going over the important aspects like holding the shotgun, pointing (not aiming) and blasting those little orange buggers out of the sky! After the session, I feel very confident in my ability to participate in shotgun sport and the etiquette on the grounds. A little background after talking to the proprietor, Dave and Vandy Fielder, they bought and opened MVCSS in 2014 to offer something a little different than the other shotgun clubs around the area by offering instruction with several different instructors. In addition, they have a pro shop with nice gear and rentals of high quality firearms from Beretta, Browning, etc. If you've ever been curious about trap or skeet shooting, or sporting clays (they're all variations of shotgun sports) I would give Mid-Valley a call first! read more

I'm new to shotgun sports and took my son and his friend up to Mitchell's to try out a new shotgun with some trap shooting. The owner, Stephan, was very helpful in getting us set up. He even took the time to come out and pull the targets for us and give us a few beginner pointers. Targets were thrown by an electrical, auto loading device in a bunker ahead of us - no heavy springs to pull back and risks of injuries with the throwers I've used in California. We all had a great time, broke some clays, and will definitely be back. 4 stars only because this is a first impression - when we go back if the experience is similar (which I expect it would be) it's easily 5 stars. read more

A friend asked me to come with him to shoot skeet. After my first visit, I didn't expect much. I arrived and went into the club house. I was greeted by and asked how they could help. I told them I was waiting for a friend. The women behind the counter was so nice and talked to me about the whole place. Explained the difference between trap and skeet. My friend showed up and we hit the range. Had a blast, really quite fun. I will be coming back and I plan on taking lessons. read more

What a fantastic place! My boyfriend and I recently bought a Remington 870 and we're looking to getting into shooting sports. I am so happy that we came to mid valley. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and the ranges are well maintained. It is a fun place to spend a few hours. We've already been twice this week and plan to be back many more times. read more

I have been taking my two sons as well as other family members to shoot sporting clays for several years. We went out this weekend to shoot a round of 100 clays and at the end when we turned in the score sheets and the card key, the woman behind the counter said we were way over and I had to pay for the extra clays. We were 36 clays over from broken or no clays. In my mind 36 birds over is not "way" over, and n the past they usually called it good as we mark out broken or no birds on the score sheet. She ended up getting another 15 bucks out of my pocket on top of the ninety two dollars I already paid, when I pushed back she said we should call each time we run into trouble, Next time I will, completely ridiculous that I should have to call the clubhouse and wait for someone to come around each time the equipment malfunctions. read more

We went here recently for a 30th birthday party. The course is laid out very nice and you can even rent carts to haul all of your stuff around in. We had a great time. The service was excellent and by far the best place I have shot sporting clays before. read more

Went down for a lesson(45 minute drive). Ellen gave a very helpful instruction. Very low key-not intimidating. I hade never shot trap before. One lesson wednesday and one practice friday and went to a charity event friday afternoon and shot 16 out of 25 to be 2nd place woman! Woohoo! Could n't have done it with out Ellen's guidance! Definitely recommend this place. Dave was also very helpful in the clubhouse checking my gun and my eye dominance and selling me all sorts of "goodies" that I now need for my new sport! read more

Skeet shooting is a fun sport time on the weekends. This place has a very nice set up and I think would be a good place for some beginners to learn. It's set up well enough for you in the advanced people. I will be coming back in the near future. read more

Took the ODFW shotgun intro workshop here and everyone who helped coached us were extremely friendly and patient. I have nothing negative to say about my time here! I think their normal prices for any of the shooting sports are comparable to other ranges too. read more
