The first time I went to this shop, my car was stalling out on the road. I was told the radiator was a problem and paid for a replacement. The problem was actually a simple fix with the driveshaft and it required a second trip. At least they did not have the gall to charge me for that. I figured that making one mistake would motivate this shop to take care the next time. I went in simply to have a few belts replaced. Au contraire, they damaged the alternator or its wiring system, resulting in my losing all power to all systems in the middle of Lake Shore Drive, nearly being struck by fast-moving traffic, and waiting five hours for a tow to bring my vehicle back to these jokers. I plan to demand an immediate repair at no cost. In short, twice they've failed to repair my vehicle, I strongly doubt their integrity, and being a patron of this shop cost me five hours stranded by the side of the road, delayed an important move, and nearly got me into an accident. Go anywhere else. There is nothing to recommend this place. Do not count on these knuckleheads to service your vehicle. Do not trust them. They are certainly incompetent and possibly dishonest. I have contacted Midas' corporate office and have no satisfaction. Now, since Midas responds to these messages, let me speak to the company openly. Midas, the only things I want are recompense, a refund, and my car fixed. Don't bother asking me to speak to your company unless those are the topics. I've seen how you reply to other Yelp reviews and frankly, the only conversation I'm willing to have is about repairs and cash. I've no interest in trying to make you better since your company's actions nearly resulted in me being injured or killed on the road tonight. read more

As a woman I've had people try to tell all types of things were wrong with my car that wasn't true. I've been coming here for 3 years. Towed Car In-My brake pedal went to the floor to stop the car, and I was scared. Car was inspected for over 30 mins to find everything possible to upsell services . Although I thought that was a nice gesture (inspection), my brake line ruptured in center of the car(visible). I was quoted a few different estimates ranging in the thousands. Remember, I legitimately could not drive and stop my car that was why I was towed into Midas. I would not recommend this place unless you really had no other choice. And, I quickly learned that this is the new scam to upsell services instead of fix the actual problem. I was given no options to fix the brake line but to factory spec, but I asked could you bring back gas prices for this old car? read more

Two words: THEY SUCK! They're also crooks. I needed brake work done so I called them to get an estimate. My first tip off should've been when he wouldn't give me an estimate via telephone but I took my car in anyway. I knew I only needed rear brakes because I'd previously gotten an inspection at the dealership but thought they'd offer a cheaper price. Jesse, whom I'd spoke with, assured me that they'd inspect it and that he'd get back to me with what the problem was. I continually told him that it was the rear brakes but he continued to over talk me. Eventually Jesse called me and quoted me a price of almost $900 FOR BRAKES on an American made regular car. Not a luxury car. When I refused he said he'd work with me on the price however he still didn't go much lower. He continued to tell me how dangerous my car was and that I should let him do the work. When I continuously refused he stated that he'd take a partial payment today and I could write him a post dated check which he wouldn't cash until the next week. I told him it wasn't that I didn't have it but I'd never pay $900 for brakes and wasn't sure if that check kiting scheme was even legal. At this point I was leery of his shady business practices and wanted to retrieve my car ASAP. I went to get my car and Jesse tried to charge me $50 for a diagnostic test since I'd refused the work. I didn't pay and furthermore took my car to the Midas on Roosevelt and they did the same work for $400. The Midas on Stoney is not Midas. They're an independent franchise and the owner is a crook. I shudder to think about the people they've hoodwinked into paying astronomical prices for minimal work. I'm going to report them to the better business bureau. read more

My exhaust pipe became disconnected between my muffler and catalytic converter. Midas quoted me $564!!! Even after I asked if they could just weld them together, they said no and that I would need to replace the muffler even though they said that the muffler was fine. I took it to Velasquez muffler a couple blocks away, and they repaired it for $30. Dont go here - they will rip you off! read more

Service date was 8/18/12. I went in for rotors, brakes, spark plugs, and struts. By saving me money on my struts (showing me I didn't need to replace them), they thought they could up-sell me with a brake hose and other services. NO! Then they told me they were putting on new rotors. The rotors they put on were worst then the ones they took off. I don't know much about cars, so I didn't know they put old rotors in at the time. After driving one day, the rotors were warped, the steering wheel shook when braking, and my stopping power diminished. I was moving out of town and couldn't bring the car back in. I took it to another Midas near my new residence, they said they couldn't see anything wrong with the car. I took it into the dealership. That's when I was told the rotors were old and warped. I had to pay Toyota for service I already paid Midas to perform. Bad business Midas! read more

At first, I purchased a Groupon with the Midas two blocks away on 72nd street. The person working the desk there refused to accept my groupon for a conventional oil change to try to get me to pay more for a synthetic oil change. I complained to Groupon and they referred me to this location on 74th. Bob advised me that he would do the oil change for me but recommended that I start using synthetic oil because my car has high mileage. He said he'd still accept my groupon since I had already purchased it. He was so accommodating. Bob and Fred are both so friendly and professional. They really know how to treat customers and I will definitely be coming back to them. Lesson learned. Everyone should use this location and steer clear of 72nd. read more

My car was running rough, I thought a tune-up would fix it. Went to Midas (on 74th & Stony Island Ave - NOT the one on 73rd & Stony Island) and spoke with Bob - the Manager. He assured me they would find the problem and call me to let me know. He asked if I needed a ride home - no charge! I said yes and in about 10 minutes a car arrived to take me home (gave the driver a few dollars for a tip). Bob called and said my car was ready - $671 for a battery ($118 + $35 labor) and an Ignition Control Module ($377 + $90 labor). A couple of days later, it started running rough again. Brought it back in and asked about the $377 price for the ICM - I had researched this part and found a wide array of prices and warranties for this part which all fit my car. Asked Bob how he makes a decision about which part to purchase for a repair? He said that he only uses the best quality parts - I said the warranty usually reflects a quality part (my warranty was 1 year, and some of the less expensive ICM's had 3 - 5 year warranties). Bob said to give him a couple of hours to let him check out the car and would let me know what's going on. A couple of hours later, Bob called to say he was going to replace my catalytic converter and spark plug wires for NO CHARGE! A $367 repair job just to makes things right! If i could give no stars i would! Had my car towed to this location on wednesday night! I spoke with a guy named Bob who said that he couldnt get to my car that day but would get to me the next day! Fine, no problem! The next day Bob called and told me that i needed 3 catalytic converters just to get my car started but there could be other issues with my car! He quoted me a price of 2800! I said no way! He then said ok i can just do the back converter to get the car started 1000....nawl! He came down to 400 for the back converter! Picked my car up and took it to Velasquez on 92nd and Stoney! The inspected my car and said all i needed was a tune up and 2 cylinders for 450! They said no indication of bad converters! Shame on you Midas and Bob for trying to get over! Will never use this place again! Bob sucks read more

I am Done With any Midas On South Stony Island!!! I have a certified mechanic in my family, however, he is not able to handle Major jobs like he use to. Keep in mind, This Midas is acually the Best Midas on South Stony Island. Bob the Front desk Mechanic is acually great. I've taken my car to this facility before. I got a heater core replacement for $800 plus, the labor cost is what killed but I truly believe they did NOT need to break the dashboard down to get to the heater core for my vehicle. The next job I was suspicious t about. I needed the back breaks repaired and they tried to force me to get not only breaks, but rotors for both front and back, as well as calipers for both front and back, $1100 dollar job. I was not having that by far, so I told them just to replace the rotors on the back, breaks, and back left caliper for about $600. My most recent and final trip was the absolute last straw. I took my car into Midas One Saturday Morning to check why my car was running hot. Keep in mind, my car is about 13 years old and in pretty good condition. They ran a diagnostic for about 3 hours and told me it was my Head Gasket. They also told me that I had oil mixing in my radiator.They would give a radiator flush which would run about $2000. Bob showed me that he had a brand new Head Gasket already waiting for me when I return!!! Of course I was not able to do this job at that time so I picked up the car. I took it home which is about 3 minutes away, the car sat for about four hours before I left my house. I drove around for 10 minutes and my car was overheating (IN THE RED!!!) When I opened the hood, I had radiator fluid EVERYWHERE because the idiot mechanic did not put my radiator cap back on. I had to buy a new radiator cap along with 2 gallons of coolant to replace back in my car. Also, my personal mechanic checked my vehicle and there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with my head gasket and I am very Pissed about what they did to my car. I have a consumer report building up and I am truly dissatisfied!!! read more

I have brought several cars here over the years and have always been left with an uneasy feeling, though sometimes with an adequate repair. I have kept coming only because they are convenient. Bob is very good at making you feel like you're being treated especially well -- while the prices and 'necessary' repairs vary wildly depending on your gender and relative level of education and anger. I've watched -many- disgruntled customers come in claiming that things that were not broken when they came in were broken afterwards. I've had the same experience. Most recently I was charged $40 to reset a check engine light, which they first tried to charge me $70 for, and then didn't even reset. Claimed it came back on again after the reset, so it wasn't their problem. The diagnostic charge didn't go toward the repairs because their diagnosis was wrong, so they counted it as an extra charge. And expensive repairs they claim are crucial have repeatedly turned out to be 'crucial' only in another 20-40k miles from now. Bottom line, if you know exactly what is wrong and know enough about cars to check whether it gets repaired correctly, come here. If the repair is important or if you don't feel like watching your back, car and wallet at every turn, do yourself a favor and go to Foreign Car Hospital for a totally honest diagnosis, or to anywhere else that doesn't have a reputation for scamming its customers. read more

I own a 2012 Honda Accord EXL. On April 26, 2016 at approx. 8:00am I brought my car to Midas Chicago at 7419 S Stoney Island Blvd for an oil change. The representative looked up the type of oil that my car used and told me that I would need full synthetic oil 0w20 and the cost would be $105 w/o tax. I questioned the high cost which seemed excessive and stated that I have had the car for 4 years and have had several oil changes and I've never paid more than $75. The representative stated "that maybe the other servicers were mixing the motor oil and not giving me full synthetic" I responded by saying ALL of them and walked out the store. Later that day, I went to Midas Chicago Pops located at 510 W Roosevelt, Chicago, IL 60607 got the recommended oil for my vehicle and only paid $57.56 w/tax. Note: I used a discount coupon for 20% off. Please note: I have never used the Midas in question however I have used several other Midas locations as well as other servicers for the same service. Midas Chicago 7419 S Stoney Island is located in a lower to middle class neighborhood and I think they are ripping off customers. For the same service that I received for the most $75 they are changing $35/ approx. 50% more. Outrageous! Lastly, when I went to Midas on Roosevelt Rd and mentioned my experience they stated that they get many unhappy customers from the Stoney Island location due to overpricing. I find this very unethical and I want to make sure that the Midas in question does not continue to get away with these sinful practices. Note: There is other Midas Chicago located at 7251 South Stony Island. I am not sure about their pricing and don't know the ownership but I think it would be interesting to see what they charge. read more
