Incompetent Workmanship and Misleading Customer ServiceLast fall, I brought my 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W212) to the Ithaca Midas to have a new set of brake pads and rotors installed. Unfortunately, my experience proved that their customer care mission statement is entirely performative. The red flags began during installation when I watched the technician hang my heavy rear brake calipers directly by the flexible rubber brake lines instead of supporting them with a mechanic's hook or bungee cord. Hoping for the best, I still gave the technician a $30 tip. Soon after leaving, a persistent rattling and ticking noise developed, sounding like a playing card in bicycle spokes. After seven months of enduring the noise, I decided to pull the wheels off to inspect the job myself. I found that both front calipers were completely seized up. The technician had installed the front guide pins bone dry--without a single drop of grease. While the rear Ate-brand calipers on this chassis are designed to be installed dry, the front floating 13mm-bolt calipers strictly require 100% silicone lubrication. Because they were starved of lube, the calipers stayed stuck, constantly dragging the pads against the brand-new rotors. My front brake system was entirely ruined in just seven months of driving. I called the shop to cancel my future appointments and confronted the front desk personnel, Riley, about the poor workmanship. Instead of taking accountability, he lied and said they always lube the pins. He then tried to make up excuses, claiming that Mercedes brake wear sensors require a scan-tool calibration (they are basic, completed plug-and-play circuits) and that slide pins need to be lubricated every single year. A simple service manual check proves that high-quality silicone grease lasts the 3-to-5-year lifetime of the pads unless a rubber accordion boot tears. This is a pattern for them. They previously attempted to repair a bead leak on my mother's car tire, and it still leaks air down to empty every three weeks. While they offered a free fix, we will not be returning. If you want your vehicle serviced correctly and safely, do it yourself or find an honest, independent mechanic. Midas of Ithaca is not one of them. read more

Paid over $1100 for a complete exhaust system for my car. Midas ignored a broken gasket from the exhaust manifold and welded the pipes to the frame of my car instead of using hangers. It cost me over $300 to get this fixed by another shop. I'm never doing business with them again. read more

Service Requested: State Inspection OVERPRICED! UNPROFESSIONAL! POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! They claimed that my caliper was faulty and that they would FAIL my inspection unless I replaced it. Do NOT go here. I should have taken the failed inspection and went elsewhere. They claimed it would be more cost effective to change the brakes at the same time. Then they charged above market rate for poor service. My headlight was OUT and they never even checked it during the inspection. They charged me for 2+ labor hours when it took about an hour and there was truly only one guy working on my car. They "drained" the brake fluid for at least a half hour and no one was even working on it during that time. Yet they charged me nearly for a full 2 hours for this service. I had to go to another garage just to check if they messed up my car in the process. Lo and behold, my brake fluid reservoir was more than half empty. I shouldn't have to go to another garage to get the job done. SKIP Midas if you value your time and money. read more

I had been taking my car to this Midas location every six months like clockwork. On the most recent visit they overlooked the fact that it had an expired inspection sticker, leading me to get a ticket. I'd like to stress, this is not the reason for my one star review. Mistakes happen. Lord knows I've screwed plenty of stuff up over the years as a small business owner myself. I'd never leave a bad review for a mistake that got fixed--I'm more likely to e-mail management and praise whatever employee took care of me when that happens. No, the reason I'm leaving a one star review and taking my business elsewhere is what happened when I called to ask how this had happened. My intentions in calling were modest. I mostly wanted an apology and maybe a small credit towards my next service--not even the cost of the ticket, just something. Instead I was told by whoever answered the phone that they simply did not look at inspection stickers when working on cars, and that this was entirely my fault for not specifically asking for an inspection when I brought it in. (Despite the fact that, when I bring it in, I always expressly ask them to look and see if there's anything else it needs) They then hung up on me. This is simply an unacceptable way to treat a customer, both in its active refusal to provide good service by glancing at an inspection sticker and saying "hey, do you want us to perform this inspection that's due" and by, I repeat, hanging up on me. I cannot imagine any circumstance going forward where I would ever pick Midas over its many competitors in town, and I would strongly encourage anyone reading this review to take your business to someone who actually cares about their customers. read more

They fit me in for a last-minute oil change, which I initially appreciated, but what followed was negligence. The technician over-tightened the bolt on my oil pan, stripped it, and caused a leak. To make matters worse, they stuffed a paper towel in before replacing the cover--an obvious attempt to conceal the mistake. I unknowingly drove hundreds of miles, from NYC upstate and back, with oil leaking down the underside of my car. The car began driving poorly, and only by chance did a friend inspect it and discover the problem. This could have led to major engine damage and put my safety at risk. Highly recommend this local Midas shop. Been having problems with thumping/shaking when applying brakes. Previous told it's my tires (which I replaced), I needed an alignment (which I got with the tires), I needed struts and shocks, and it was likely my rotors - when nothing else helped. Brought it in to Midas and worked with Zach, the service manager, who kept me updated every step of the way -- brakes, tires, rotors, control arms, and a myriad of other possible causes. Everything checked out in good working order with one possible cause just something to monitor, AND they balanced my tires as a last possibility. As a single woman who really knows nothing about mechanical issues, it was really great not to feel pressured into repairs I don't need! Terrible place. Came in for a state inspection and they declined saying that my brakes has "discoloration" despite them working fine. They came up with an estimate of four wheel pad and rotor replacement of $1200. I thought it was fishy because a) they had this estimate prepared as they were telling me about the problem and b) this was needed for all four brakes. The fronts are usually the ones that wear the most. Rejected their offer, went to another garage and was given a clear inspection. I acted dumb and asked them specifically to look at he brakes and they said they were fine. Won't be coming back again and everyone should avoid them. Both times they actually didn't have to fix anything because there was nothing wrong but my car was just being finicky. The rim on my car was slightly bent and I had seen online that you can bend them back into place. If we didn't go that route it would cost $120-$150 to buy a new one online. Nope, not here. $350 later they fixed it. They charged me ahead of my appointment and had me pay extra to overnight the product. Keep in mind I was driving on a donut tire and the commute to this location is 30 minutes away. I come back the next day and my product was never overnighted. Now I have to buy a new $200 donut as well. After going for my third time they fixed it and refused to give me my dented rim back so that I can fix it myself EVEN THOUGH I ASKED FOR IT BACK IN ADVANCE and was told I could have it back. Turns out "if I take something from their stock we have to replace it with your part". If you had to overnight the part it clearly wasn't a part of your stock so.... don't go here! read more

I decided to skip the lines of the other local shops in town and get my brakes and rotors done at one of these big box stores in town. Turns out, I got both front and back brakes and rotors because they were squeaky and close to metal to metal. Brand new brakes and rotors and they are a different kind of squeaky- NEW BRAKES AND NEW ROTORS SHOULD NOT MAKE NOISES! Perhaps high end brakes have a wear in period, but they did not warn me of anything like that, and I got generic brakes. So I take it back to Midas, they test drive it for an hour, and claimed they changed the clip on the brake, "hope that should satisfy you". I didn't even get out of the parking lot without hearing the same noise! And the whole drive home. So i guess I'm going back to the store again, after several hours of waisted time there yesterday. read more

This is the second time I have brought my car to Midas in Ithaca, and both experiences have been nothing but positive. The first visit was for a set of winter tires. Out of the many quotes I received, Midas offered me the best deal plus added a rebate and free rotations, tire balances, and a 50,000 miles warranty. Recently I went in for an oil change, and upon checking the breaks they realized that I need all new calipers, pads, and drums. They showed me exactly what was wrong to show they were telling the truth and walked me through each part. They were honest and told me what the recommend I change and what needed to be changed to ensure I was not over paying. On top of that, the service was fast for what I had done. There is no doubt I will return for my other maintenance needs. Plus now I have a life time warranty. read more

Would never go to them again. One star is too high a rating. They did extra work on my car without asking me or getting me to sign off on it before even looking at the problem I came in for. And then to add insult to injury, they tried charging $1100 for what should have been a $400 job at most if they'd just taken care of what I asked them to (must have been all the extra work they did on unnecessary things!). When asked about this discrepancy later, the manager got verbally confrontational. Highly unprofessional. It was only after threats of calling the district manager that he shut up and let me pay for just the work I signed off on. That's how I can tell he knew what he was doing was shady. What an amazing team they have at this Midas. Jeff the manager was so helpful and kind. I brought my car in for an oil change and ended up needing new brakes. Despite being backed up they got the oil change done very quickly. There was a bit of a snag when going to change my brakes through no fault of Midas. Jeff made numerous calls to the local Toyota dealership and corporation to rectify the issues for me. Then because of all the hassle and stress and longer wait time (which wasn't that long as they returned it by the end of the day) was kind of enough to give me a break (no pun intended) on the price. Really great local people I would highly recommended and plan on returning with my problematic Toyota rav 4 hybrid in the future. DO NOT come to Midas if you like your car and value your time and money. They are liars. Both the old guy in the workshop and the younger guy in the front desk are professional frauds. I came here for an oil change in May and they told me I need to change the rear breaks and rotors. I asked them to show me the rear breaks and rotors. When they showed me the car, their mechanic told me that the rear breaks were worn out but the front breaks were good in condition. I checked all four breaks and agreed. So I paid 350 dollars extra to replace the rear ones. One month later, I came here for the inspection. After 30 mins they took my car, the front desk guy told me that in order to pass the inspection, I have to change the front breaks and rotors. I said I just checked one month ago here and your mechanic said they were fine. And I asked the front desk guy what were the condition of the breaks, he said they were like a piece of paper thin and he was not here one month ago. I knew he was lying because his face was so obvious showing he did tell the truth and he was he guy told me I need to change the rear breaks! Felt being conned, I told him I didn't want to change my breaks today. No surprise, they failed my car for the inspection. 3 days later I went to another shop, they passed the inspection without any doubt. Do not ever trust Midas for anything as they are full of lairs, from the manager to the mechanics. They only want to charge you on the thing that you not need to pay. I had a tire go flat and took it to Midas. After diagnosing it was destroyed. They tried to sell me 2 new tires that were a different tread then what my car had on now. At the recommendation of another tire shop I went online and found the tire (something that Midas should've known about and offered to me) and had it shipped to Midas. After the received a tire I made an appt. for 9 am the next day. My car did not go back to be worked on until 10:15am (despite 3 lifts being open) and wasn't finished until 1:30 pm. This severely delayed my traveled plans for the day. Midas, offer your customers the best plan for them, not just the plan that will make you money. And when you make appts. actually make sure that they're at the time that you said they'd be at. Horrible service and lack of knowledge warrant this 1 star. read more

Did not properly attach my hood prop and it jumped around under my hood for a couple days before grounding out my battery. It could have caused a fire or serious damage. I was left stranded. They conceded to pay for damages initially, then suddenly the manager refused to take any responsibility. Slammed the hood of my Honda on my hand as I reached in to show him the prop we were debating about. Almost crushed my entire hand, he never apologized because it was intentional. He snarled 3 times that I "shouldn't have put my hand in there" we were in the middle of a discussion. Very RUDE unprofessional and dangerous actions that day. They caused $3000 in damage and refuse now, to take responsibility. Shame shame shame. Treated me as an idiot because I AM A WOMAN and I wont be taken advantage of. I am considering going to the authorities to discuss charges for assault as soon as I get the video footage from Ithaca. read more

They said that my brake pads were completely worn through and that I was down to the rotor. They tried to charge me $600 (claiming this was a "deal" and they were giving me a discount) for new brake pads AND new rotors and said I could die if I didn't replace them immediate. I'm sharing my personal experience with Midas in Ithaca, which has been very positive from a female college student perspective not from the Ithaca area. I would highly recommend this branch if you're an out-of-town university student who needs to have any car repairs because of their reasonable prices and customer service. The last time I had a car problem I had gone to another local shop because of the positive online reviews (when you're out of town you have to do your research for the honest shops), and the place I ended up going to seemed okay but charged me a lot of money for what should not have been that costly (could've done it at my local shop at home for much cheaper, but I wouldn't have made it home with my car in the state it was). So this time when I had a problem I decided to take a shot and go to Midas on Elmira Rd. I have an old car (20 years this year) and I thought I needed to have my drum brakes replaced because of a weird sound they were making. I think it might have been David(?) I saw; he seemed very nice and professional and didn't talk down to me as a woman in a car shop or anything. They said they'd take a look and I signed this paper saying I had a right to a written estimate before they did any work which I appreciated. I left it overnight and then called the next day asking if they had looked at it, and the person on the phone said that they had looked at it and there was just a lot of dirt/rust inside the drum brakes and that they were fine and didn't need replacing. They said they cleaned it out for me and I could pick it up tomorrow. Now normally car shops would charge a fee to have a car looked at and cleaned, and I was expecting to pay this when I picked my car up, but Midas charged me no fee for their inspection and cleaning. I am very impressed with their customer service, and know that if I had brought it in to the last place I went to in Ithaca they would've charged some sort of something. So I was very grateful as a college student with not a lot of money for not having been charged anything. I will definitely be coming back if I have a future problem as this experience shows me they are honest people and I won't be taken advantage of. I know Midas has had some bad reviews in the past but from what I understand they are under new management. I know my personal experience has been very positive and I will be going back. read more

So I went back to MIDAS to get my refund. The bratty manager (the same guy) basically refused to give me a full refund, but only for the faulty parts. I told him that's not what I heard from the regional manager. (I should mention that there was another woman making phone calls right from the MIDAS reception area to complain about the service she received). I took back the parts and all the documents and called back the MIDAS corporate consumer service and received another phone call from the regional office manager in Syracuse. The corporate customer service repeated my previous case to me stating that I thought "the manager was rude" - I told her that was not the only issue: the problem ranged from 1. misdiagnosis 2. fixing a problem that probably did not exist in the first place 3. adding a new problem and not fixing the first problem I came in for and 4. giving me unsound safety assurance 5. when I got second opinion and called them back, they refused to service. 6. Rudeness was definitely there but only after all these five issues are addressed they can discuss rudeness. (I should mention that the local manager, when I went to get refund in vain, told me that he's going to call a police on me for "yelling" in the office - even though my voice level was the same as his own. I believe this is a typical tactic by these customer service places to say that the customer with complaints "yell" or "holler" when in fact they are just stating their cases. I bet it's in their manual). Anyway, I received a phone call from the same regional manager who he said to me that he doesn't know how things got all messed up like this, and that he had told the Ithaca manager to give me the full refund. He would make everything alright for me if I come to MIDAS on certain day because he's there supervising activities there. So I went. Lo behold - betraying his own words, the regional manager still tried to haggle with me about the amount of refund. But there were a couple of other customers behind me watching this interaction, and I think that helped. He agreed to give me the refund I deserve. BUT - not until after he TORE UP my original receipt and tossed it into trash bin!!!!!!!!!! (Which I fixed with tape after I got home - I would be happy to post photos!) I was like WHOA - how could he do this? It is a part of my maintenance record (which I keep on file like many people do - records of oil change and all - in case one day I have to sell my car to show I've been taking good care of my old honda). I demanded that he returned me the torn document from the trash bin, and got it, and then walked away - never to return. I was going to give three stars if I got the refund as promised in the beginning - but given what happened afterwards, I give only 2 stars. If I didn't receive the refund, it would have been one or zero star. read more
