Now i see why this place only has 2 1/2 stars. I would give 0 stars but i cant so i will give 1. It's not a very professionally run place. The manager, KR, is way too sensitive and takes everything personally. At first meeting, he said he doesn't need to write everything down because he has a great memory. Unfortunately half the things we talked about weren't even addressed. One of those things was suspension. He assured me there were no problems. Then he insisted i come pick up the vehicle because I should go home and "decide if those additional repairs were really worth it" after I initially said they were. I wrote it off as he just wanted to do stuff that he was comfortable doing and this wasn't one of them. So i took it elsewhere and they showed me where the tie rods were bust up and how shocks are supposed to operate. I wasn't upset. All good. I still ordered parts from Midas to fix my door that wont open. After the "7 or 8 days" he told me they would be here, I called him on the 10th day because I didnt hear anything. He said, "Remember i told you theyre from the dealer? I have no control over that." Wow, ok. One week later, i called again and was told by KR that he "just told (me) last week that they come from the dealer so we dont really know when they'll get here. " I didnt want to bother too much so three weeks since that last conversation, I called again and unfortunately, got the same message from him. "They're coming from the dealer. You're not out any money. I am." What!? Where did that come from? I finally said, "I feel like Im being a nuisance to you.. Sadly, now he said that I was "judging him" because I said i felt like i was a nuisance, and "assuming " he wasn't checking in on things. So if he was checking on things, i was never given one bit of status. No indication of backorder, timeframe, or where it was in transit. Just that it's "from the dealer so it will get here after they send it." After all that, he said i was more than welcome to "order the parts myself." Wow . Just wow. Keep in mind that my conversations with him are one way. Him talking as if Im a bother and should know better than to ask a question or do any kind of reasonable follow-up. Is three follow ups over a five week period too much? Whats with the high makamaka attitude? Do Customers really deserve this type of lip? I've needed these parts at least 6-7 times over the last 10 years and have ordered them from a few different places on different islands and have never been made to feel as though I shouldn't be asking how much longer to receive them. KR needed to get the final word in after i hung up on him. So he called me back and like a fool i answered, only so he could say that i "could take my business elsewhere." This is comical. He is speaking on behalf of the Owner?! The level of arrogance is too high for me. And what?! KR thought i was coming back after I hung up on him? He called me back because he just needed to have the last word. The best thing about this place is Scott but too bad he can only do so much. Scott is patient, informative, and speaks clearly. Too bad because I really love doing business with local owned companies and supporting them long term. I am really disappointed by all of this. read more

Walked into Midas earlier today to get a safety inspection for my truck. The guy behind the counter tells me to come back around 1pm. I come back at 1:20pm same guy ( not looking up from his computer or making any eye contact with me at all) tells me the person doing the inspections is on his lunch break. Don't go there! They will scamming you! My friend was told to pay $2200 to pass safety check. They said the brakes were needed to replace. She went to another shop and passed safety without paying $2200!! The brakes were fine. They also refused her to refund overcharges that they secretly added. That's fraud. My friend went there for safety check and oil change. K.R said she needed to pay $2200 to pass safety. He said the brakes were needed to replace, and she could go another shop to try but they would say same thing. She paid for oil change only for the day. Later she found out that he overcharged her. The amount he charged on credit card and the total amount of invoice was different. She went to another shop for safety check and it's passed without paying $2200. They checked the brakes and it's fine. Midas tried to scammed her. She went to Midas kona again to ask refund. K.R and Scott refused to refund it they said they didn't know how to refund it to credit card. K.R admitted he was not supposed to charge for safety check and threw cash on the counter. She said she needed a receipt. He went to the back of office and gave her the document showed refunding to her credit card. (It's passed 2 weeks but she'd never received refund). She asked Scott to refund for the difference between total charge and total amount on invoice. He refused to refund them. He showed her the computer then he admitted "Yes there's no such a fee or anything on invoice" but he said "We would not refund you even it didn't show it because we usually charge that amount to the customer." Midas charged her secretly. And the secret amount they refused to refund even they didn't have any evidence. Now they can make false invoice but she has original invoice and original estimate. Went in with grinding rear brakes on my 2015 forester, so I knew it would be a minimum of new pads and new rotors. They quoted $599 complete. They completed in less than 2 hours and the final cost was $599. Chris did the work and verified the brake caliper was still good before he quoted the job, which help assure the final price equals the quoted amount. I read the negative comments and reviews on yelp before I went there... they all seemed years old. So all I can say is my experience was good...things seemed to have improved. This is my third time to the Midas in Kailua-Kona and every time I've been here (1st - oil change & inspection, 2nd - change my sisters tires) they've been very professional, helpful and informative; they are definitely not the cheapest, though. Being as nitpicky as I am can be challenging for me because it leads to sudden mistrust, whether unfounded or not; my point being that if I feel like you are trying to scam me in anyway, shape or form, I become very defensive and would not believe anything you try to tell me! Both Chris and Zach have been very good with communicating very clearly any problems, issues and/or concerns they come across and advise appropriate action before proceeding forward. I scheduled an appointment to get a vehicle inspection done for Uber and to get my brake lights replaced. I was told on the phone they could do this but when I arrived the jerk at the front desk started berating me about how they didn't have the forms there and sarcastically asking me if my phone could print the form. I literally hadn't even said anything to him (I had just started a conversation with the other guy at the desk). I told him to chill out and that I would figure it out. He said "Don't tell me to chill out" and continued to get more aggressive towards me for no reason. I told him I would take my business somewhere else and walked out. If you want to get verbally attacked the moment you walk in the door, go to this place. I've always gone to Midas locations in the past, but this one is not worth your while. Still, I got ripped off and although I tip my hat to Chris for trying to fix the problems his staff created, in the end he could not be bothered to keep his word. I should have given that money to my ex-wife.. she knows how to make it hurt right. Go to online school and learn to code. I had Midas repair my exhaust manifold and other exhaust issues. I left there car sounds good. Now it's been 9 days and my exhaust is worse than before now. I paid $3000.00 for the repairs that were obviously not done correctly, problem is worse now and I feel that it seems like they took total advantage of me because I'm a woman. Would NEVER bring my car here again. Mechanics obviously don't know what they are doing at all. Now I have to find someone else to fix it so I feel safe driving. Just spoke with the manager Chris about this and he was again incredibly rude and told me he would not refund my money for not fixing my car correctly. My car started shuddering while applying the brakes on Saddle Road coming back from viewing Mauna Loa erupting last Saturday evening. I just had new Tires put on a month ago and thought maybe my brakes were going. I made an online estimate appointment with Midas in Kona and they were able to accommodate me the next morning. I arrived and was immediately checked in and within 15-20 minutes the Tech took me back to show me what he'd found. At first, I thought - "Oh, here we go". I'm an older woman and have years of experience with car service companies leading me down the prim-rose path by attempting to get me pay to fix a "bad rocker arm" or "replace a bad ball joint". When the tech told me he wanted to show me the tie rod-I knew for certain I was in for another trip down that path. However, I was pleasantly surprised when he walked me under the car and showed me a loose bolt to the tie arm that was allowing the tire assembly to move. The brakes were fine, the ball joint, the tie rod, the rocker arm- NO Problems. Midas tightened the bolt, filled my tires with air and didn't charge me. It made my day. The manager chris charged me $1597 to fix everything that was needed on my truck. today i pick it up and i still heard the squealing sound when i turn the steering wheel..chris could of easily called me to say the powersteering pump needs to be replaced..If i heard the squeal, im sure they did, but he didnt call..for a few hundred more the pump should of been replaced..$1597 is a lot of money for shitty work done. clowns! to treat their loyal customers like that! Definitely should have took to yelp before going to these guys. Had a similar experience with scamming. Just glad I made a call to another shop and told Midas not to touch my brakes. Midas wanted to charge me $900 plus to change all four brake pads and rotors, no calipers! I found that odd. So I called my friend who manages a 76 shop in hilo (didn't want to take the drive, figured Midas was reputable and honest) and he told me to send him the quote from Midas. He quickly responded with 1. They're over charging for labor 2. They're over charging for parts 3. His shop could do it for $500 if I even needed it done. So I let Midas do my oil change, which they did for the record, and took my car to my friends shop instead. The other shop took off all my tires and immediately said my brake pads were still good, and just for the sake of it put a pad measure thing to it (don't know what it's called) and it was still in the green. My rotors were also fine, little rusted but it's hawaii, shit rusts here. Midas tried to say my rotors couldn't be sanded and had to be replaced cause the rust was too much. If something seems odd chances are it probably is. This is a small community and I hope more people get warned about going here. Just sad, this is the type of shit that makes me not trust anyone with my car. I'm just thankful I made a call to my friend and saved my self $900 plus cause I was very close to just letting them do it. Should have read reviews before going here went there for just a right rear break pad but told me to replace both rear pads and rotors plus break fluids for $930. Rotors for $120 each and $44 each labor, break pads set $136 plus $165 labor. Break fluid/flush for $25 plus $115 labor. PLUS shopSUPPLY for $115.34 they even want for a transmission fluid but i decline, for i only got a thousand budget i feel bad about it, i am a first timer about all of this. Great service and quick turnaround! Chris and Bill and the whole Kona team were super helpful and professional. I took my big as* work truck in to get an estimate / diagnosis on a bent muffler tailpipe. Despite the previous estimate by another local muffler shop that I would need to order a new one (cost from dealer over $700!) since they couldn't work on a 4" pipe, these 3 Midas wizards were able to do a little bit of welding and I was out of there in less than an hour for a small fraction of the cost! Abruptly hung up on me as I was inquiring about alignments. They said an alignment on my car requires special tools (which it does not). I've rebuilt every piece of my car and know it well, and the only reason I came to these people is that I don't own a laser alignment rack. I installed all of my suspension with ONE set of metric 3/8" sockets, so they're uninformed idiots.I don't know why they would turn down such easy money. These guys flat out lied to me about my break pads. I went in for a regular oil change and they told me I had less than 10% left on my break pads. They quoted me for $400 for only my front breaks! I didn't want to pay that ridiculous amount of money for the break pads so I bought them ($35 from Napa) and I had another mechanic work on them for me. The new mechanic was appalled with the price Midas quoted me. Once he took the tires off he said I had about 70% of my break pads left! Midas was just trying to take advantage of me and overcharge me. I will never go back to Midas in Kona again! read more

You want to hear rude? That's what I got from an oil change competitor down the street. Needed to get an oil change and safety check, so I went to this competitor and the manager was so sarcastic, off I went to find somewhere else. Pulled up to Midas, a half hour before their posted time to open. Talked to the manager who was in the service bay and asked if they had open slots for safety check and oil change. The manager set my expectation of oil change when they open and safety check an hour later when the person qualified comes in. Although a little more expensive, it was well worth it, for the full safety inspection versus just oil change. read more

I really want to warn EVERYONE about KONA MIDAS. DON'T EVER GO THERE!!! Last week my parents took our family 4-runner into Kona Midas for a routine safety check, brake work, tire rotation and oil change. We went to pick up the car and as soon as my dad left the parking lot, he noticed the check engine light was on. He turned around and went back to Midas to ask why it was on. Two different mechanics test drove it but couldn't figure it out. They said the computer showed a solenoid error. To prove they had nothing to do with the check engine light turning on, they said they would take it to the transmission shop. Then my dad drove up to my mom's workplace to let her know we'd have to leave the car overnight. While driving back to Midas another driver pulled up next to my dad at a traffic light and told him his right rear tire was wobbling. He returned to Midas and found that only TWO lug nuts were barely holding the tire in place! FOUR of the other lug nuts had already flown off, and the tire could've easily fallen off causing who knows how much damage. There could've been an accident and my parents as well as other drivers could've been injured or even worse lost their lives. Bill the Midas manager responded defensively by saying: "Everybody makes mistakes. You no make mistakes? You perfect?" When we went to pick the car up after a transmission diagnostic was done, Bill showed us the results and claimed the check engine light was not caused by any work performed by Midas. Apparently that was his ONLY concern: that he wasn't responsible for the light coming on. He told us we had to regularly maintain our car so that this doesn't happen. He mentioned NOTHING about forgetting to tighten all the tire lug nuts and showed absolutely no concern for our safety. Then my dad told Bill he was grateful the check engine light came on for whatever reason (thanks for watching over us) because if not my dad or my mom could've been driving on the highway and the tire could've fallen off! My dad felt extremely lucky but was really upset with Bill and his company for their dangerous mistake. After leaving Midas to cool off my dad decided to go back to Midas to confront Bill, he wanted Bill to realize that HE was also lucky that the tire didn't fall off, because if it did Midas would be liable for THOUSANDS of dollars in damages. Bill's ignorant response was: "But the tire didn't fall off... What, you like hit me?!" Instead of apologizing he was taunting my dad to fight him?! My dad told him: "I'm gonna tell EVERYONE I know not to go to Kona Midas because of this!" Bill responded: "Do what you gotta do..." and walked away. Bill's reactions to this whole incident were inconsiderate and ridiculous! His company directly endangered my parents lives and he refuses to admit it or apologize! I called them on the phone and they were very nice and told me the first look was free. When I got there, they asked if the check engine light was on, and I said yes. They said it would cost $62.50 for diagnostics. I don't care too much about the charge, but they should have asked the question on the phone rather than have me drive down there and waste my time. Here's a hint: If your engine light goes on, just before you go to Midas, disconnect the battery for a little while. It will reset the check engine light and wipe out the computer memory. If they ask about the engine light, tell them it did not go on. If they don't hook it up to diagnostics, no loss. If they do, then you get $62.50 of actual work from them rather than a 5-minute hookup with a computer. read more

SCAM ALERT! They tried to rip $1000 from me! I went to get a safety check for my car and the service man told me that he couldn't pass my car because of the suspension problem he have found. He told me that he can fix the problem for about $1000 and pass the safety check. On the same day, I took my car to the shop where I use and the mechanic found NO problem with my suspension! Be cafeful when your vehicle doesn't pass safety check and Midas tell you that your car needs a major repair! read more

Here's a tip: Save yourself a lot of money and change your own oil. They charge an arm and a leg for it. 39.99 just to start and that's before they try and sell you an air filter you don't need. Go to Costco or Walmart, buy your oil and a filter and knock it out in 20 min yourself read more

Go elsewhere for a safety check. Not only are they rude, but they went for a joy ride in my car! Unacceptable and inexcusable.

Do NOT use this place! They are complete scam artists. I took my car in for a Safety Check. They said I was the next car to go in. Over an hour later, the guy got my keys and took off like a bat out of hell down the street. I have NEVER had a mechanic drive my vehicle to do a safety check. He didn't even ask my permission to take it out of the parking lot. He came back to the shop and half an hour later, called me on my cell phone to explain "the problems". I was sitting in the waiting room watching him call me! Where does he think I went? HE has my car! He proceeded to tell me I had a leak in my engine and three lights were out so he couldn't pass me. He said the light in the front (that he didn't know the name for or what it even did) would be $80 in labor because he would need to take the entire front end off of the car to replace it. I called my husband to see what he wanted me to approve, and the guy followed me out to the street so he could hear what I was telling my husband. We decided he could replace the two cheap bulbs above the license plate, and we would do the $80 replacement ourselves. I then went to pay my bill. While I was questioning the charges on the bill, the lady grabbed my credit card and ran it. They had added a 9.9999% "shop charge" to my bill. When I questioned it, the lady said it was a posted charge and pointed to a sign on the counter that was covered by other items. I asked why I had to pay a shop fee for a safety check, and she said it wasn't on the safety check. The only other thing I had paid for was $17 for lightbulbs and installation. They charged me an additional $10 shop fee on a $17 bill. When I kept questioning the shop fee, she said maybe I should go somewhere else. After looking further at the bill, they had charged me the 10% shop fee on the QUOTE for the $80 lightbulb labor! When I told her I shouldn't have to pay an extra fee on something I didn't even have done, she finally agreed to give me a credit. When she gave me the new revised price, it still had the 10% fee on the safety check. I showed her on a calculator that 10% of $17 was $1.70, and that is all I should have to pay in shop fees (a fee that is for rags, gloves, and disposal fees that aren't covered by the quote). Really? I thought that was what quotes were for - to cover everything they need to do that specific repair! Why would you need any of that to replace two lightbulbs above a license plate!?!. She kept saying she wasn't the one who made up the bill and that they don't actually add it in, the computer does it automatically. If for some reason you have a brain fart and decide go to this place anyway, remember to add 10% to all of the quotes they give you, and be sure to take a calculator and ADD UP YOUR BILL YOURSELF! Do NOT hand them your credit card until the bill is correct according to YOU. Both of the people I dealt with (the local lady and the tall haole fellow) were extremely dishonest. The shop should be shut down for fraud. By the way, I bought the unnamed lightbulb for $ .72 at Napa Auto Parts a block away. I went in for an annual service check and was told Id have to wait for 1.5hrs. No problem - I asked if I could hold my spot in line while I went to the bank. The woman behind the counter laughed. "We don't do that." Why do you take my phone number then? I come back and 2 hours later I'm still waiting. They have 2 guys working who seem to spend most of their time sitting down and doing nothing. Thankful I read these reviews. I'll be going somewhere else!
