First time! I really like it! I phoned in my order as i only have 30 min for lunch. I zoomed down there, and my order was waiting on me. how nice. I ordered the Southwestern. Smoked turkey, tomato, avocado, lettuce, red onion and a sundried tomato jalapeno cream cheese, on my choice of bread (sourdough yes please) YUMM. The bread is nice, could be fresh even. The cream cheese spread they have on the sandwich gives it just a little bit of heat. In my to go bag was also a small paper bag of black corn chips, and a York peppermint patty! I had great service and the food is good, you should try it. read more

Like many reviewers have pointed out, this place does an excellent job with the smoothies and juices. They are spot on every time and zinging with super fresh tastiness. I haven't found another smoothie place in town I like as much. Of course, because they are organic and served in a hip-hopping space, they are spendy, like six bucks for a small. I don't indulge often because as little as I like to prepare food, a good smoothie is something I can and do make often at home. So, five for the smoothie/juice. I've never had problems with service here, as it's always been prompt and friendly. They do get super busy, and I can see how that might lead to craziness once in a while, but that part is a-ok for me. Five stars there, too. What I dislike about this place is the food. Unfortunately, they follow in a sad stereotypical tradition of hippie restaurants (a term I am using as a catch all qualifier, not as an insult, having a bit of the hippie in me) of healthy but bland food. No matter whether it's the special, like the Navajo wrap, or a regular item, like the Chicken Milano or Tuna Schooner, all I have tried tastes oh-so dull. There is somehow no flavor in their food--no spices, no salt, nothing. None of it was gross, just blah. I used to like their breakfast sandwich, but that's not on the menu anymore (it's hard for ham and eggs to be flavorless because ham flavors everything in porky goodness). There are much better places in town, and while I like organic and local when possible, I like flavor more. Two stars for the food, and because I find it so disappointing, it's the rating I'm going with. I keep going back because I want to like the place. I tried it for lunch the other day because I wanted to go someplace to eat and work, but their wifi was faulty, and I couldn't get anything done. Being on vacation in the homestate/town of your girlfriend for the first time carries with it the promise of visiting all the restaurants she's known and loved for years. With a hankering for a breakfast burrito, she took me to Middle Way Cafe one morning. The place was light and pleasantly minimalistically designed. Tall ceilings and large windows made for a good ambiance even with plenty of people chatting merrily. We ordered at the cashier, while admiring all the gluten free cupcake options. A guy can wish, right? Taking our number, we found a table and sat. They have plenty of shirts for sale and everything screams hipster in the best way. Our food came sooner than I had expected, and with a smile. I got the Huevos Rancheros on brown rice and beans, and my girlfriend got the aforementioned breakfast burrito. I took a bite or two of my Rancheros and wasn't super impressed. Then I added Sriracha hot sauce and the dish was instantly transformed from bland til amazing. Perhaps my mouth is weirdly set up, but I haven't ever experienced a transformation quite like that. Deliberate I chose to believe. I was well chuffed with my selection at that point. As we have a habit of doing I switched dishes with my girlfriend half way through, and found the breakfast burrito to be very delicious indeed. All in all it was a very enjoyable breakfast. This used to be one of my favorite spots for lunch or breakfast. Since Covid of course, there seems to be an issue with keeping staff that's caused a huge decline in the quality of food & service. My orders 9/10 times are not the quality I was used to. If I get coffee, it's not the milk I ordered or it doesn't have the syrup flavor I asked for. Forget cute coffee designs in your mug, not happening anymore. If I get a salad, it doesn't have what I ordered on it-like chicken. If I get a sandwich, it's soggy or different entirely than what I ordered. If I order 2 smoothies, the cashiers can't tell you which is which so you have to guess. Middle Way needs management & leadership that can get it back to what it used to be & I hope they are able to. read more

Although extremely crowded for breakfast, service was quick and food was delicious. Our coffee order was brought to our table promptly. The Mexican Benedict was a wonderful take on my favorite breakfast dish. The Blueberry French toast was delicious, with whipped cream and what looked to be a blueberry butter spread on the side with a sauce packed with blueberries! MIddle Way reminds me of cafes in Seattle and New York, albeit about 3x as spacious which is nice. Its a cafe geared toward the locavore, rei-gear wearing, weekend warrior crowd that serves food to reflect its audience. The food is very good though - fresh, lots of veggies and good combinations of spreads, meats and breads. The breakfast menu is also full, although I've not made it over in the morning. I'd like it if the coffee was a bit stronger, however, because I've had half dozen cups over time and it always tastes a bit watery. read more

This is one of my go-to spots for a lazy Sunday latte. Their backdoor patio is a huge perk, as outdoor seating is hard to come by in Anchorage. They offer an abundance of healthy options- juices, smoothies, salads, and many items come gluten free. But don't fret, there offer delicious burgers, sandwiches, and soups when you're craving something more hearty. My favorite item is any smoothie is ginger! They don't skimp, so it's always hyper flavorful. Ahh the pastries, cupcakes, and desserts are to die for! It can get a little dangerous if you look in the glass case of deliciousness. They also have rotating art and photography on their walls, which is a fun reason to stop in. The staff is super friendly and it seems like they're all family. 4/5 stars simply because their ordering process is stressful. It's cafeteria style, so you wait in line, order your food, pay the cashier, then get a number to wait at a table. It's difficult to decide exactly what I want before its my turn to order. Traveling to Anchorage, AK I had my hang ups, and (cough) stereotypes in play: 'These must be Palin lovin' meat-slingin' folks that lean on the side of hippie huntin.' What was a vegan like me suppose to do?! A few things took place. (1) I was in downtown Anchorage, no where near Middle Way, no pun intended (is that even a pun?!); and (2) I have never encountered a more helpful and kind populace. In walking throughout downtown, I enjoyed various restaurants and breweries (there is one on every corner it seems, and town drunks are the standard fare. But at least these are passive, nice drunks). However, I had a hard time getting fully filled up. I found online, a place called Middle Way Cafe and immediately headed there on my last full day in Anchorage. It was a shame that my conference was not nearer this restaurant. I was in snowed-out fat-guy vegan heaven. Walking in, I already knew this was going to be fun, and good. I mean hipsters in Alaska, how could this be bad?! I had vegan food and eye candy all the same. ha. I ordered the vegan huevos rancheros and enjoyed every bite of this meal. I took my time with it and savored it. The drawback was most certainly the pricing. My friends got similar fare and had no complaints. The decor was fun as it included various art pieces from local artists lending itself to an inviting and eclectic feel--that is, everyone has a place here. After visiting this place, and enjoying it, my friends and I decided to come back for lunch time as well. We decided this because we were only going to be in this part of Anchorage at this time. So we took in the local area. When we returned, we opted for lunch time sandwiches and burgers and the taste and design was no disappointment. In addition to my BBQ sandwich, I purchased a Peanut Butter cookie--I desired something sweet for once on this trip. PROS: great selection. relatively friendly employees. cute bearded guy in tight pants. fun art. community-feeling atmosphere. CONS: the pricing was a bit excessive and this could be do to the current lack of vegan options in the area; the peanut butter cookie was quite disgusting (disgusting!); the food took some time to get to our table in the morning (but it was morning rush time so, I can let this slide I guess); the employee that I ordered from was confusing, let me explain. RANT on EMPLOYEE: When I approach the register and ask, "so, of the vegan breakfast options, which do you prefer or recommend?" and you respond with your recommendation, to which I remind you, "and this is vegan, right?" and you respond with yes, DO NOT place the order with cheese. That is not vegan. Also, this minimizes the integrity fo the restaurants claim to be vegan. So, in closing. Cute boys in tight pants. great tasting food. Great food, drinks, and service; poor user interface. I was here twice: once for juice, and once for lunch. The juice was great and so was the veggie sandwich. Staff members were very polite and helpful, but both the food person and the beverage person were calling to me to take my order. I am easily confused when this sort of thing happens. Also, the menu on the wall did not list sandwich ingredients, and I had to locate a menu on the counter which did, before deciding what to order. There must be a better way to accomplish this. The Spicy Chicken sandwich on sourdough is my favorite lunch time treat. They have a great beef barley soup that hits the right stop on a cold winter day. I've never been disappointed by Middle Way. Their food is so delicious and there are lots of options for vegans and plant based eaters. My friends and I came here right after the brunch cut off. I ended up ordering an Asian squash soup and a Morning Glory (sp?) smoothie with pineapple and orange in it. Both were decent. But the vegan nature sauce (ok, that sounds hippie and perverse at the same time) is delicious and a great complement to the salmon. The burger was topped with fresh avocado slices (yay), chopped cabbage (both red and white), red onion, and tomato. Came with a side of blue corn tortilla chips. Overall, a high quality sandwich in terms of ingredients. Maybe it's the nature of veggie/vegan restaurants, but I always end up feeling hungry again an hour later. This place is on the pricey side (I paid $13 for my meal), by the way. But this is a good place for lunch, and the decorations on the walls (a giant painting of oxen, tapestries, local artwork) are attractive. It gets VERY crowded at lunch. There's a lot to be said about Middle Way. I think it has vastly improved since it went through its remodel and reopening, which greatly expanded its venue. Food - Hard pressed to find something that sucks. Their sandwiches are filling and delicious, their soups are always eclectic and amazing, and most of their pastries are good. I have had some yucky pastries, however, that are more on the gluten-free or vegan side. The last couple of jam-filled, GF/vegan muffins I bought were really, really dry and lackluster in taste. Pretty much felt like a big, crumbly baseball, that had barely any jammy filling. But, a lot of their other pastries are much better. I guess it can be a hit/miss with certain types. Drinks - The cost for the juices and smoothies have gone up significantly, so I tend to juice my own stuff at home if I really need a fix. However, their monkey love smoothie is really good, so I'll splurge sometimes. I love how they use K-Bay Coffee, instead of Crapladi's. I like to get me a mug of black coffee, with free refills! Service - Service can be spotty, but lately, I've noticed that there has been a big difference in the overall attitude toward customer service. They have gotten friendlier and more helpful, although sometimes it's hard to get suggestions for food. Sometimes, I feel like I'm bothering the cashier by ordering! Something I learned when I was in food service -- when a customer is indecisive or isn't sure about trying something new, immediately start machine-gunning out suggestions to move things along. However, one staff member had recommended this huge, gooey, chocolaty cookie that I have become addicted to. So, I guess that suggestion stuck! Overall, MWC is probably one of the best places in town for healthy, filling, delicious breakfasts and lunches, topped off with some awesome coffee. Though this is my go-to breakfast places here in Anchorage while visiting on business, there's one thing stands out and truly disappoints me. What disappoints me is NOT the great food, wonderful staff or chique ambiance, but rather their complete and utter disregard for OUR environment. Everyone here is earthy, natural and while that's good and great, it entirely misses the point about being Kind to the Earth. For example, let me explain, I got oatmeal for breakfast, there were three plastic containers one with nuts, one with brown sugar and one with a granola mix, why must it be in plastic? Also, though they do offer metal spoons for stirring coffee, they also have plastic stirrer's. Lastly, there is no composting or recycling bin. Again, this is in no way a shot against this great eating establishment, as I love it, but I wish they were more environmentally conscientious and earth friendly. I've been here a couple of times for lunch. Each time has been pleasant, it's a comfortable place to eat or drink. The first time I came I ordered a wrap that did not come with some of the promised ingredients (sprouts, kalamata olives) and they were pretty stingy with the hummus; leaving me not very satisfied and unimpressed with the portion. The next time was a significantly better experience. The coyote burger was delicious (really tasty black bean/kale patty) with ample avocado and toppings. I opted for adding the salsa (remembering being hungry the last time) and was happy I did as I thought the salsa was quite tasty. Again, I thought the portion was kind of small--I felt hungry a few hours later; but the burger stayed together well and I will probably be back for the veggie burgers. read more

Really really good food. Assuming they don't mess up your order the first time and serve you an omelet with cheese when you're allergic. For brunch on a Sunday I ordered the California omelet (avocados, red peppers, cheddar cheese, sour cream) but requested that the cheddar be taken out and added reindeer sausage. I was excited to learn that they have vegan sour cream there! So I substituted that in too. The food took forever to come, and when it did I discovered there was cheese in the omelet! I returned it to the serve who got me another omelet after some delay. I have to say, once the order was right, it was delicious. The potatoes that came with the omelet were delicious too. Excellent flavor and portions. But the wait and mess up made me think these guys don't quite have their stuff together when it gets super busy there. They also have several vegan dessert options in the deli case. I tried the vegan-gluten free pumpkin pie which was surprisingly awesome. However, their chocolate brownie (honestly, how had can it be hard to make a brownie?) was terrible!! It was literally raw tasting on the inside. Absolutely disgusting and I needed to toss it. Within the last couple of weeks, my family visited here twice because we were in the area. First impression: busy, trendy place. The first visit, I had the Venus de Milo soup and my son had the multigrain pancakes for lunch. The soup was very good, but came with a small piece of stale bread. The pancakes were okay. The second visit I had a Lebanese Veggie sandwich, hubby had a turkey and cranberry sandwich, and our son had a PB&J. Both the veggie and turkey sandwiches were good. However, my son's PB&J again had stale bread. Both of our sandwiches came with blue corn chips--I'm not a big fan of chips, so I was disappointed. So, I'd say the food was okay, maybe a bit less. What bothered me about this place was the noise level and service. It was SO loud in there, that it was hard to carry on a conversation without yelling. Another complaint: when I ordered my drink from the barista, she was chatting with her friend and handed her a drink before me. The friend had been a couple of people behind me in line, so that was a little irritating. All in all, the service and ambiance were very lacking. Middle Way Cafe was such a pleasant experience that my husband and I returned the next day (after finding out Snow City Cafe's wait time was 1hr). MWC is definitely a local's place as opposed to SCC... so thank you, Yelp! Middle Way is everything a relaxed, yet modern cafe should be. It's eco conscious, vegan friendly, and has a super friendly group of staff!! If you're short on time, MWC has a large selection of home baked goods (mostly vegan) -- cookies, muffins, breads and a few small cakes. Be sure to grab one of their Alaskan Heritage coffee brews. We picked out a deluxe egg sandwich -- which included reindeer (aka caribou) meat, avocado and their delicious homemade hollandaise. The english muffin was toasted to perfect and they gave us 3 large eggs in the thing. WOW. Caribou meat was a perfect savory & texture complement to the eggs. Caribou meat is more lean and hence less oily than beef patties. SO delicious!! =) The sauce was so wonderful. For coffee -- if you like it wham bam in your face - go for the Sludge. It hits you fast. We also picked up a blueberry muffin but ... since it was vegan.. I guess it didn't suit my fancy as much as I thought it might.
