We live 4 hours from Anchorage, but anytime we're in the city, we head to Middle Way Cafe to eat. It's always bustling with local folks getting a healthier bite to eat. The Shepherd's Omelette is my go-to breakfast dish. There are so many options for those with dietary restrictions such as gluten-free or vegan. The desserts are out of this world. You really can't go wrong with any of them. There are always servers bouncing about offering to help out with anything. The walls are covered in the work of local artists. Very nice place. It's been a while since I've been to MWC and decided with a little extra time between appointments this morning that quiche & a latte would be good. Unfortunately, no quiche... no baked goods in the case for that matter. I quickly looked at the menu to make a new choice on a whim and noticed there were no prices written. I decided on a avocado toast & latte, which came to almost $19! Admittedly I silently said some foul things in my mind and took a seat to wait for my order to go. The service was nice enough... but the latte was merely okay and the avocado toast was simply 'meh', and served with a side cup of fruit. When in Anchorage! My co-workers order from here pretty regularly, I was craving a salad with local salmon and this did NOT disappoint! I ordered the cashew miso salmon but I asked for it blackened with sauce on the side. I also got the wasabi aioli I noticed as a menu item on another dish and WHOA. Pretty sure I licked the cup? Ha. I used to love middle way. The quirky quaintness of the place always seemed so inviting. I've never been blown away by the service but my recent visit reminded me why I don't make an effort to go out to each these days. I used to always get the vegan huevos or the colors tofu stack. I like the unique take on breakfast options. What I didn't like was being quoted 20 minutes for a breakfast order then waiting 30, only to get a plate of undercooked hard vegetables (they weren't even full @ 9am). What a cool cafe. Honestly I was expecting more of a Hobbit theme going off the name...This is the perfect place when you need something that is delicious and fresh. We swung in for a quick lunch and both of us needed to eat, but wanted to keep it on the lighter side. We each got a half sandwich. The southwest sandwich was so clean tasting! It was so confusing what we had to do in order to get our food, and it wasn't even good. I am not impressed.

Four stars only because when you walk in, their menus are on a table a few feet from the order counter. A group of customers congregated there to view the menu. I can see this being an issue if we came at a a much busier time because it conflicts with the line flow. Not a huge issue - just something to note. As far as the food goes, oh my god was it delicious! They're breakfast potatoes are so yummy and probably the best i've ever had in Anchorage! The portions are a great size and the price for their food is reasonably priced. I got the mexican benedict, a fun and creative play on a traditional benedict. It's a delicious and filling dish that's got a serious kick! I think the best part about this is that it comes in either a whole or half option. Seriously consider the whole though because if you don't finish it, you can take the rest home. Trust me when I say it travels well and tastes just as good! The service was amazing and the food got there so quick! We also got their Mango Tree smoothie and that was super refreshing after our night out. read more

I struggle a little with how to rate this cafe - the food in a vacuum was really good, but we ran into multiple service/logistical issues along the way such that when we finished it felt a little off. So I'm giving it 4 stars because the food is arguably the most important component, but more realistically it's a 3.5. First, the impression I got from the website was that you could order breakfast all day - but in the restaurant there are limited hours. There have clearly been staffing/supply issues hitting all Alaska restaurants recently, but a more consistent messaging would be helpful. Then, when ordering, there was a lot of confusion about ingredients and availability - some lunch items weren't available, and when we tried to make a bowl vegetarian by substituting the chicken for tofu, it ended up being a 5 dollar upcharge (I guess they couldn't substitute it but could only add it?). This is understandable, but we only found out when we looked at the actual receipt while paying. We weren't willing to pay 20$ for a lunch bowl and so ended up needing to get a refund and order another item. Like I said, ultimately when we got our food (an avocado melt and an Azul salad), it was tasty and felt like pretty healthy lunch option. But, if we were thinking of coming back, the ordering chaos would be a factor. read more

My feelings about this cafe are very mixed. I have been going here over the years, and in the past I would have rated it higher. The service is extremely slow, I have learned to just call in my order and they text me when it is ready. This works for me as I usually only order a sandwich. To order food there, the wait is incredibly long, so I just won't do it anymore. The food used to be a lot better than it is now. It seems thrown together, as if the employees don't care about the customers. The restaurant and counters are often dirty. No one wipes down the tables well. The bathrooms are honestly disgusting. I only use them if I absolutely have to. I think the cleanliness of the bathrooms tells you a lot about a place. I don't like the water dispensed there, it often tastes stale. I think the prices are high and there are other places in town I prefer now. I don't intend to keep going there. read more

The coffee is always good and the juices and smoothies are always a plus. I got the Mexican Benedict and it was pretty huge. There's just enough spice and flavor. The potatoes were nice and soft. And there was a bit more avocado than I expected. The avocado toast was a bit brown. And very little avocado. The oatmeal is pretty good. Overall I would say go on a later or earlier time. I was super excited because this is the first vegan joint in Alaksa that actually looked pretty fire. I ordered - REUBEN SANDWICH: I don't know what I was expecting but... I definitely wasn't expecting this lol. I learned that I'm not really a huge sauerkraut fan & the main ingredient in this sandwich was sauerkraut.. fail. The salsa verde was delish. The eggs were poached very nicely. The bread was barely toasted. There was only one tiny spot with just a light brown mark. It wasn't "toast." Bitter wouldn't even begin to melt. Sad face. Ever been to the beach and dropped your water bottle in the sand? You dust off the cap and the bottle and you think you're free of sand but when you go to drink, you inevitably get a little CRUNCH in your mouth? That's how the potatoes were. They weren't crispy so that's not the crunch. And it happened in three or four bites. Just weird. Ambiance and service were on point. The coffee was fresh and flavorful. Middle Way Cafe, what can I say about you hmm? Well you have a weird nickname, but i am NOT going there in this review. It's a place i avoided for a long time, based on the nickname people give it, and i will say it does exude a kind of "Organic, gluten-free, GMO Free, lentil-based, tree-hugger, Birkenstock-wearing, Patagonia-clad" ambience, which I also found offputting, but DON'T judge a book by it's cover. It's got great food. The inside - first you come to the line, which is right next to the display counters of delicious looking baked goods. You order, and pay, and take your number. And attempt to find a table. The place is always busy at lunch time. The tables are pretty plain, however the artwork featured is always amazing. They do have great sandwiches, I'll tell you that right now. My faves are the Tuna Schooner, and the Tuna Melt. Both delicious. I took a star off, mainly because they don't ask me if i want fries with that. Because i do want fries with that actually. read more

Finally a burger that is not beef or salmon. Have been looking for someplace that offered a meat burger other than beef or fish. Had the lamb burger. The patty size was nice size. It comes with jalapeño chimichurri which I asked for on the side to regulate the spice factor. The chimichurri had a kick to it. The lamb was a little tough it may have been over worked, but I over looked it as I was so happy to have an option. For dessert had the carrot cake. It had nice spice flavors, but does have nuts. I wish that I had out a positive review back the several times I had positive experiences. This 3 star rating was an average of this review compared to previous positive experience. I was excited to take my friend here, usually one of my favorite places, I haven't been here in awhile. The person who took our order took a very long time. We just missed breakfast and so we ordered sandwiches, but soup wasn't ready. I ordered and explained I didn't want chips. My friend ordered the tuna sandwich and asked for a side salad. She explained no chips. She was told she could not do a half order. I revised my order and added a salad. We both got our order after waiting a little longer than usual. We both had chips and salad. Her sandwich was an open face tuna melt, 2 of them, why couldn't she get a half order? What really bothered me is plastic silverware. I don't remember plastic utensils last time I was here. Why I'm the world is a restaurant as nice as this serving food with plastic cutlery? It's nice to go but that really struck me as odd. I love Middle Way Café and I would go there more often if it wasn't always packed and/or they were open later. Pros: Great menu for both breakfast and lunch with a variety with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Of course that means it's generally more pricey to eat here than other lunch places, but it's worth it. The colorful artwork adorning the walls adds to the ambience. I know people generally come here for the food, but dang, the coffee is among the best in town. Middle Way uses K-Bay Coffee from Homer, which I wish more places in Anchorage would use instead of a certain omnipresent coffee company (that happens to have a location right next door). They also have Monin syrups, which are much better quality than the other brands the vast majority of coffee shops use. Another good thing is they have a separate ordering line for coffee so you don't have to wait in the lines for ordering food. During my last visit I got a 12 ounce hazelnut latte. First of all, the presentation was beautiful (see photo), and I really like the new cups they have. The latte tasted as good as it looked. Perfectly steamed milk, smooth espresso, and just the right amount of syrup so the hazelnut flavor wasn't overwhelming. If any of the drive-thru espresso stands in town made lattes this good I'd be there all the time. Cons: Always packed so finding seating can be a challenge. Tables can be messy because some lazy ass people leave their trash everywhere (huge pet peeve of mine) and employees, understandably busy, don't always get to cleaning it right away. It tends to be noisier than other coffee shops, so I wouldn't recommend this as a place to read or study. And because of the cafe's location, navigating the parking lot is like going through a maze, especially during peak lunch hours. These reasons are what stop me from giving five stars, but it's not bad enough to deter me from going to Middle Way. The juice and smoothies prices are quite expensive, but they are delicious. The fresh ginger they use adds a nice zing to the smoothies. The gluten-free pastries can be pretty dry but otherwise most of them are good. As far as food recommendations go, my favorites are the Turkey Cranberry sandwich and Moroccan bowl for lunch, and the Blueberry Hill French Toast for breakfast. But really, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. If you have time to spare, this is one of the best places to enjoy a casual meal or a cup of coffee, or both. read more

Arrived right as they opened on a Saturday at 8AM. I got bacon, eggs, potatoes, and toast. We found a table next to the front windows. I noticed that my chair had old, hard crumbs in the seat that I had to wipe away. I also noticed the windows had a patch of a child's dirty handprints smudged onto the inside glass. It was mostly a turn off because they'd just opened, which gives the assumption the staff doesn't clean each morning. The wait time was about average. My bacon was too greasy/fatty and I felt it wasn't worth the extra $2.50 to add it on to my plate. The potatoes and eggs were ok, but didn't feel special. The only garnish was a sad, thin warm slice of orange. I did like the self-service water station that had ice cubes if you'd like, and lemon too. I also really liked the paintings hung up all over the restaurant. I wanted to take a look at each one they were all very unique. However, another star was lost in the restrooms. To be blunt, they reeked of pee. There also, very unfortunately, was no soap in the dispenser. I can't believe these kind of things are overlooked by the opener team. Sadly, I just don't think I'll be in a hurry to return to this place. read more

I may have left a prior review about 3 years ago, but I just visited Anchorage (March 2022) and am happy to see that Middle Way is surviving Covid and is still as awesome as before. Our family, a group of six visiting came in for brunch and we were extremely disappointed with our visit.  The burgers we ordered were charred to the point they were flavorless with the texture of rubber, my chicken sandwich was cold and I was not sure if I was even eating chicken, the burrito order came out about 10 minutes after the other food came out AND was "chicken" not the beed we ordered, and the baja bowl tasted like it was thrown in the microwave for an excessive amount of time.
