At my recommendation, many of my law enforcement friends and family used him over the years. So naturally when my son recently had an issue with his truck, a 2004 Silverado, we took it to Mel.... And to our absolute shock we got screwed. Badly. The cost was outrageous and it took forever to what amounted to simply replacing a flywheel. Got it back and subsequently learned that many of my friends and family and their business and families also had recent bad experiences with Mel. Guess he really went down hill. However, a few days after we got the truck back we discovered a leak in the transmission that we didn't have before. We didn't have a leak. To avoid Mel, we decided to first look into it ourselves and with a simple visual observation it was clear that when the flywheel was installed the front seal must have been damaged. Reluctantly we took it back to Mel. Feeling like I disappointed my son by recommending Mel to begin with, I hoped that Mel would be responsible and reasonable as the leak was obviously a result of his work. A front seal is nothing and should have been done when he had it apart. Poor workmanship. Transmission work 101. We left the truck for him to inspect the leak. He had the truck for another three weeks. We waited and got the call and instead of just replacing the $15 seal and accepting that he should have caught that, or even just working with us a little , he said it would be over 4800 to rebuild. A rebuild? It doesn't need that, just a front seal, Mel. I explained that the leak was a result of their initial work and their reply wasn't to deny that fact, but rather to say that the truck was driven 1000 miles since their repair. Obscene. Absolutely obscene. I have since learned of many other ppl who were once friendly with Mel and relied on his work also got screwed. I have the names, Mel. Try me. Mel, you were once a good guy, reputable and honest. You are now nothing more than a crook. DO NOT USE ACADEMY TRANSMISSIONS. Almost 30 years of local law enforcement and I have only seen this type of disgusting behavior from the lowest of the low. Mel and Academy Transmission is absolutely the lowest of the low. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Stay FAR away from this garage. A mechanic at this garage clearly has anger issues and verbally…read morethreatened me. I had never used this garage before this incident. They happened to appear on Google as open on a Saturday, and the garage I normally use is closed on Saturdays. I just dropped my car off for an inspection (literally--hours before writing this review). They said the car should be ready to pick up within the hour. I didn't anticipate any issues with inspection, but you never know if there's something wrong that would cause it to fail. That being said, I'm fairly knowledgeable with basic car maintenance and can tell when I'm being scammed. I received a call less than an hour later, with the mechanic (whose name I didn't catch, he appeared to be the only mechanic working at the time, latino guy in his 30's) saying that there were a number of issues with the car, ranging from suspension, to power steering, to who knows what else, and that they weren't "even going to try to do an inspection until we get that car on a lift." This set off a bunch of red flags. I'm not a mechanic, but fairly certain none of these things were true. I said on the phone, "no thanks, I'll just come and pick up the car." I swing by about 30 minutes later to pick up the car. When picking up the keys, the mechanic gave me the riot act. "The car needs this, and this, and your pump is going, and your belt is going to snap..." etc. Since, ostensibly, he "didn't get the car on a lift," I'm not sure how he was able to diagnose all of these problems. I said, "OK, thanks," took the keys, and left the office. The mechanic proceeded to also leave the office and follow me out to the car. He said, "I think you're f**king disrespecting me, walking out of the office like that." I said, "no, sorry, I said thanks." He said, "You know, I could've f**king scraped that inspection sticker off of your car, don't walk away from me when I'm talking to you." I said, "I'm going to put this on Google and other review sites, you're being threatening." I then got in my car, and he proceeded to open the back door of the car and yell, "you're f**king disrespecting me, I'm going to kick your a**." I said, "please close the door or I'm going to call the cops." He closed the door and I drove away. I don't think I'm going to file a police report because I'm not sure what good that is going to do here, but I IMPLORE you to avoid this garage AT ALL COSTS. I sincerely believe that this mechanic may end up hurting someone.

Im honestly upset i have to give this place a star. If i could give no stars. This place only…read moreaccepts cash for starters but has credit card stickers all over the front door. i ask a simple question about credit cards and the "owner" starts yelling at me and clapping his hands loudly. Very unprofessional. My receipt has absolutely 0 detail about the tow or storage and when i asked he tells me the plate number is on there and that is all i need. He also did not have change for the cash he was so desperate for. I say this because everything felt weird and fishy. I spoke with him earlier in the day and before i could even call them back after having to scrounge up the 475 in cash, hes calling me a few hours later asking if i called him about a completely different vehicle that was not mine. The best part, my vehicle wasnt even there. I had to follow his worker to a completely different lot a few exits away. Got there and my vehicle was blocked in without anyone to get it out. I then had to wait for about 45 minutes for someone to get to the lot with a truck. This place is SCUM if i had to put it in one word. DO BUSINESS AT YOUR OWN RISK
