I have a 80 Harley Davidson XLH 1000, thats being slowly restored so i've been looking for a good mechanic to only do my work on my bike that i can't do myself, searched high and low looking, then i found the Midnight Mechanix's shop gave them a call stopped by to check them out, saw lots of bike's at there shop so that was a plus to see, i saw street bikes, Harley, Choppers, Dirt Bikes etc. First i had a new front tire put on 2 weeks ago wheel was on the bike so i waited about 45mins, then 7/24/2012 dropped my bike off again to have a new rear tire and new chrome sprocket installed. I just moved up from LA two months ago so I wasn't sure where to take my bike for repairs. I took my 95 Kaw VN 800 in to this shop (operating out of a storage unit which shouldve sent me running) because it was leaking gasoline from the carburetor. I was told on the phone by John, the mechanic, that he would have to take the carb apart and of course give it a tune up after he was finished. When I went to pick up my bike it was filthy, covered with his greasy handprints AND not only did he NOT EVEN CHECK THE OIL (the crankcase being filled with gasoline), but he informed me that the clutch was now slipping. As there was no problem with the clutch prior he suggested that it must be the cable and that i should get it fixed asap. We checked my oil and concluded that it looked high. Draining it, we discovered that it was full of gas. I helped John change my oil (for which he still charged me full price). Obviously livid, that he had not only not tuned my bike up, as he promised to do when giving me an initial quote over the phone, but not even checked the oil, I was ready to get my bike away from this negligent mechanic. Unfortunately, the clutch was so bad that I had to leave it with him to replace the cable because i didn't feel it was safe enough to drive and prob wouldn't even make it back up to Emeryville. Despite running great before taking it to him my bike now coughs because it was not tuned properly/at all. So, i have to take it to someone else now and spend more money. This is the classic tale of taking your bike to a mechanic with one problem and leaving with another. I would warn anybody considering taking their bike to this mechanic against doing so for the aforementioned reasons. If you care at all about your bike, take it somewhere else. read more

Seen the reviews in here back in December which made me try this place even though I stay in the West Bay. Finally have to review Midnight Mechanix. Went in for routine maintenance for my 01 Suzuki GSXR 1000 and put some parts in I purchased off EBay. John the owner was very knowledgeable and explained all that I needed to know. Even saved me money with some additional repairs like adjusting my clutch and bleeding my brakes cause he felt they were safety concerns. Hours are nice and a plus since most shops are closed by the time I get off work. Now I come from the Auto dealer industry as a mechanic and I know about upselling BS. John was honest and you get the personal feel when working with him. No selling strategy or pressure felt was my experience . All work was done at my discretion. Only thing I advise is a bit of patience which I had to learn since I am so used to Auto Dealer fast pace. I forget he has other clients, projects, he's the only mechanic, service advisor, cashier, receptionist, lot attendant, manager and janitor all rolled up in one. Great service! Went in for an oil change and coolant flush. I told John that my bike overheated, so he told me he would look at it because it shouldn't be doing that. He found that fan was unplugged (previous shop I took it to didn't reconnect it) and John plugged it back up. Real honest man, I would recommend going to him, he knows what he's doing. read more

Noticed my chain was a little loss in the middle of a ride, called up Midnight Mechanix told them the issue and they told me to come right by and they would get me set. Contacted John through email and was able to bring in my 2011 Yamaha Stryker on the weekend. The fact that they're open late during the week and available on the weekends as well is very convenient, as I don't have to miss work. The shop did an overall inspection and performed a few necessary repairs after discussing their findings. John kept me updated on the progress and answered any questions or concerns I had. John is awesome. I haven't met Rueben yet, but they seem to do a great job. John also helped me out in a jam. My bike broke down a few miles away from his shop and he didn't make me pay for a tow, he put my bike on his trailer and took it to the shop himself! So nice and considerate, especially since I only needed a tow for a few miles, but the cheapest tow company I would have still had to pay $50. He worked quickly and got my bike fixed in a good amount of time and is very reasonable with pricing. He knows how to communicate well and does exactly what is needed. I am definitely going to keep taking my bike to Midnight Mechanix, they did a great job and were amazingly friendly! And who else is open when you get off work... NO ONE! Nowadays, it's EXTREMELY difficult to find a trustworthy mechanic, weather it be for your car, motorcycle, or any other expensive object you may own, there's always somebody after your money. That's all about to change. I was referred to John by a friend of mine, I got my first bike 2 weeks ago (yamaha r6) and wanted to take it somewhere and get checked out and hopefully get some recommendations on what I need done. John managed to have me come in last night at 9:30pm so he can take a look at it. The hours are really awesome since I get off work at 5pm and by then most shops are close to closing! So ended up being that my bike is actually fine lol. He recommended coming in for a 26k mile valve-adjustment and replacing some gaskets, one of them has a slight leak due to the bike being downed. I'm going back friday to get some cosmetic work done, once again not conflicting with my schedule because he will work it out based on your time frame. Overall, his prices for labor are really fair, and he's usually busy all the time so it could take a couple days for him to see you, but that appeals to me because it shows he has a large clientel base and is in high-demand, so it's worth the wait! John is my new go-to guy if I ever need anything done to my bike in the future! Oh and a plus is I can actually text him as well, big plus in my book! read more

John scheduled me in for a next day Saturday crankcase and primary fluids service on my 09 FLHX. He does a comprehensive initial inspection while filling out the work order. While completing the paperwork he mentally reshuffled his days work deck so I did not have to Uber out and Uber back later in the day. I went around the corner to CostCo and picked it up a hour and a half later. Very proactive. He is passonate within his chosen profession and wanted to understand my bike and know the modifications within it. When I picked it up he brought to my attention play in my 12 inch handle bars that I had become accustomed to during the 10,000 miles since installation. He retourqued them for me and they were loose. I am new in the East Bay and look forward to a long term work relationship with John. I highly recommend him on all levels. read more

My 2003 Honda Shadow Spirit was having issues. It was using more gas than it should, and losing power at random intervals. These guys fixed it right up. And they are extremely affordable. I actually though it would be a more major repair, but they found a couple minor things that were easily fixed, with the right tools. Something I didn't have the tools for. $125 out the door and I've been riding strong ever since. read more

great shop! With most independent shops and dealerships you have to take time off just to drop off and pickup your bike for repair. Midnight Mechanix tailors their hours to us 9-5 commuters/students/blue collar workers. They're open past 6pm Mon-Fri, available on the weekends, very convenient. Most importantly, repairs are done reasonably fast, to spec (wouldn't expect any less from a factory trained Master Mechanic), with fair-minded, competitive parts and labor pricing that's significantly less than a dealership. My first experience with them, I was scheduled to take in my bike for a front and rear tire change but I was delayed because of an electrical issue which threw up a error code on my FuelPak. I had to call the shop to say I wouldn't be able to make my appointment. Unexpectedly, John, the owner, called me back, diagnosed the problem over the phone, and helped me fix it myself. Other businesses need to take note and follow this business owner's dedication to customer service. Navigating Tip: They'll soon expand their shop so they'll be more visible from the street but just look out for the large business address sign "2479" near the stop light at the Industrial and Hall Road intersection. read more

Brought my '88 Honda Hurricane in to get new tires put on. I was stoked that these guys were willing to touch my bike, seeing as how I called a few shops before to get estimates and they wouldn't even consider it. The tow truck dropped my bike off at the shop and I was immediately greeted by Ruben, on of the mechanics. He was super nice and friendly and let me down very gently when he told me that I needed a new rear rotor and brake caliper and also to fix a leaky fork. The prices were very comparable and the guys went out of their way to find the best prices on parts. I've been riding around on my bike for a few weeks after getting it back and it's been handling great.
