I have been here several times now and as much as I want to like it, I just have not enjoyed myself here. I get that I'm older, and probably not the clientele they are looking for, but they have never ever been attentive, even when like yesterday I was the only one sitting at the bar. They genuinely make me feel like they don't want me on there and am more of a nuisance to them. Fooswise, I have can't really say anything great about it. It's pretty basic, you can get better Indian food from so many other places in the metro area. I was hoping that their menu might be more adventurous and interesting but it was pretty run of the mill. It's not bad food by any means, but it's not going to impress you either. As far as their cocktail menu goes, I don't think they have a true cocktail lead, the drinks range from basic and uninspired to kind of gross. Being from Kerala I was interested in the Kerala Mule, and boy did I regret it. Either they don't like South Indians and purposely made it terrible or they need to taste their drinks before putting it on the menu. The more standard drinks were very well made. Aesthetically this is a beautiful spot. They really brought the colors and the design. The DJ stand being an old Indian motorcycle is a great touch. The pool table in the center of the restaurant is lovely as is the colorful umbrellas that adorn the ceiling. Visually an eye catching spectacle that really heightens the experience. At night this turns into more of a club feel, the dark lighting and the DJ can make it a fun night out. Bonus point for having an old Aishwarya Rai movie on the big screen. So while I might not specifically come for the food, I would come and have a more classic cocktail or beer and either start or end my night here, assuming I wasn't ignored the whole time. read more

As an Indian food connoisseur, I am thoroughly disappointed. Indian cuisine is defined by its vibrant, specific flavors and the care put into the cooking. Unfortunately, Midnight Temple completely missed the mark. While the beautifully decorated space and great musical vibe make it a nice spot for cocktails and chatting, the food and service were absolutely unacceptable. Here is a breakdown of our 2:00 PM lunch experience. Let's start with shockingly flavorless food. We ordered the Shrimp Manchurian, Goat Curry (requested medium spice), and Garlic Naan. Everything was extremely bland. I have honestly never eaten Indian food that tasted so much like absolutely nothing--zero flavor, zero spice (even at medium heat). Furthermore, the Shrimp Manchurian lacked any crispness and just tasted oily. When my Goat Curry arrived, it was clear the kitchen had just warmed up the sauce and thrown freezing cold meat into it, expecting the sauce to heat it from the inside out. When I bit into the goat, the center of the meat was ice-cold. It was incredibly unappetizing. When we pointed out the cold meat, management didn't offer to take the dish off the bill. Instead, their version of making it "on the house" was offering us more bread, and they simply took the curry back to warm it up longer. While the garlic naan was freshly baked, it had absolutely zero garlic flavor. It was just fresh bread with oil. Also despite the restaurant being nearly empty at 2:00 PM, the staff was completely checked out. We didn't have a dedicated server; instead, three different people cycled through our table. We had to flag down whoever happened to walk past just to get basic necessities like straws, napkins, and ice. To top it off, a drink I ordered never even arrived. Flavorless Indian food is unheard of, but to consistently manage it across multiple dishes takes a profound lack of care. Someone needs to have a serious talk with the chef, because serving ice-cold goat curry is completely unacceptable. It's a little pricy so save your money and go elsewhere for a real meal. read more

This place has it all! The atmosphere is amazing as soon as you cross the threshold, you will know that you have walked into the Midnight Temple. There is no question. The decorations are very elaborate and beautiful. You can take the stairway or there is an elevator tucked away to the right on the ground floor. When you get to the second floor, where the restaurant is, you agreed by the lovely waitstaff who are extremely attentive. The menu has something for everyone and there is a fully stocked bar. The portions are more than enough to share and are so delightful. The music is always good. Depending on what time you come, it can be an crowded situation and there are a variety of options for seating. The food here is absolutely delicious and the vibe is fantastic. Drinks and ambiance were just as good as other reviews mentioned. The main drawback is service, the owner is clearly stretched thin and needs more staff to keep up. They were very upfront with guests about being short-staffed, which I appreciated, but I watched four different parties walk out after waiting for water, menus, or being told the menu was limited. If you're okay with a longer wait and a more relaxed pace, definitely come for the food, it's worth it. If not, it may be better to wait until more staff is hired. Even a simple "open seating" sign might help ease the confusion for customers waiting at the door. With some extra hands on deck, this place could truly shine. What a great surprise buried somewhere near Eastern Market. The decor here transports you straight to India. First time trying Palak Patta Chaat and it was so good, with a unique crispy texture that I did not anticipate. Chicken tikka masala was a little watery for my taste. Service was pleasant but very slow. We wanted to order more cocktails but no one really checked in on us to be able to do that. The Manchurian chicken was tasty, but the paneer curry was way too salty -- so salty that I couldn't even eat it. What really brought the experience down was the service. The place didn't seem well-staffed, and the servers were inattentive. Every time we tried to ask for something, they would just walk away. I had to ask four times for napkins and three times for my drink. When we finally did get napkins, the same waiter came back later and actually asked us if we ever got them... it was confusing and frustrating. I generally do not care for Indian food, and there are only 1-2 dishes that I'll order when I find myself at an Indian restaurant. One of them being Aloo Gobi, which Midnight Temple had, and I have to say it's likely the best that I've ever had. The flavor was excellent, and the spice level was spot on for me. I also had Naan and Chicory Coffee to go along with it, and those equally delivered. The atmosphere of this place is very unique and definitely provides an experience, which is great because you're likely going to be here a while. As others mentioned, the service here isn't all that great. We waited a bit for them to clear a table and seat us; from there, it was another chunk of time waiting for the waiter to take our orders. We had to follow up to get the drinks we ordered way after our food was delivered and also had to go up to the bar to get some water for the table. It wasn't the waiters' fault -- I just think they're understaffed. Seemed like they had 2 people working all the tables and it was full. Truly, that's the only reason it's a 4-star instead of a 5 for me. I'd highly recommend going, but bring your patience with you. read more

As if it was trying to be a nightclub and not a restaurant maybe that's the vibe that they're going for, but it wasn't what I was expecting. There are a few little details that I found slightly annoying. In particular the chairs it seems like every table is equipped with some flimsy folding chairs that felt like they're gonna crumble underneath you. There were a couple of booths around, but maybe those would've been better. We also had some issues with the service. Even though they're only about five people in the restaurant during our visit, it took quite a long time before we were able to finally place our orders. Once the food arrived, it was quite a long time before we saw the waiter again. He never checked back to see how we were doing, and it was difficult to get water refills. The food itself was pretty darn good. We got chana masala and chicken tikka masala. Along with some paratha. Everything was really tasty, but the overall experience wasn't good enough to make me want to go back for more. Had a great time at dinner over the weekend. This plane is located in the heart of Eastern Marker right next to Detroit Distilling Co. It had a very modern Bollywood vibe with gorgeous saris up the stairs and then cool decor and neon in the main dining space. The tables are set up like classic divans which adds to the vibe. The menu offers small plates and large plates and a lot of vegan and gluten free options. Drinks were delicious (though IMO not very strong). We ordered a bit of everything: Pani puri, vegetable Manchurian, vegetable pakora, their signature dish which was bhindi (okra), fish curry, saag paneer and Channa masala. We also got a variety of their breads: naan, chapati, paratha and puri. Overall the food was great! Two of the curries we got the hottest spice level and they had a good kick to them. Service was a little slow but they're really new so I think it will improve with time. But the staff was super friendly and accommodating and always make sure water was refilled. The menu They have some of the classics you'll recognize like Palak Paneer but they also have a number of dishes that I haven't seen elsewhere, like okra curry and Mysore dosas. I sat at the bar because the tables were filling up pretty fast...it was quite a lot of us there....but I figured it would be a good spot for me. I ordered the Kali's Potion which was made with tequila, pomegranate, and citrus. I'm not usually one to drink tequila but it wasn't too bad. My second drink was the Dirtiest Chai which by the way did not have pumpkin, thank God but had cinnamon and it was pretty good as well. Soooooo the food...... yup ...... here we go...... The food was actually okay. The samosa was made perfectly. The crust was flaky and crunchy and the potato inside was flavorful. The chicken tikka masala, the sauce was amazing but my chicken was pretty dry. It was not tender and juicy at all. However, the sauce saved it. The vegetarian biryani was quite delicious also. I was not a fan of the gulab jamun but I believe it was more of a mind thing. Once I was milk solids it turned me off.... Milk isn't supposed to be solid Nevertheless, I had a great experience. Located right in the Eastern Market district, closest to Shed 2, Midnight Temple is a must visit during your trips to the Eastern Market area! When you enter this establishment, you immediately go up a flight of stairs to the space and it just feels like you're entirely transported. The decor is so cozy and amazing and truly feels a world away from Detroit. The vibes are immaculate, such good music playing at all times, and the drinks are flowing! This place is great for some yummy drinks and some street bites that they make in their kitchen or downstairs at their food stand just outside of the establishment. They have a non-alcoholic drink option, which is the dealer's choice. The drink they came back with was this watermelon, lime, and cardamom infused drink and it was DIVINE! The food was also just SO tasty! You truly can't go wrong with anything here! It's such a fun time whenever I come here and when I brought my friend, she said that everything down to the smallest details (like the water cups and water pitcher) reminded her of India, which is just lovely to hear! One Star (only because zero isn't an option) This was, without exaggeration, one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. From the moment we walked in, it was clear that customer service is not a priority here. We waited far too long just to be acknowledged, let alone seated, and the wait times for food were nothing short of ridiculous. Watching other tables around us deal with the same frustration made it obvious this wasn't an isolated incident--it's the norm. When our food finally arrived, it was mediocre at best, and by then the entire experience had already soured. But what really pushes this place into "never again" territory is the owner's attitude. Instead of taking responsibility for the poor service and delays, they were dismissive, rude, and completely unwilling to listen to feedback. It's one thing for a restaurant to be busy or short-staffed, but it's another to have leadership that clearly doesn't care about its customers. If you're looking for a pleasant night out, avoid this place at all costs. There are plenty of restaurants where your time, money, and patience will actually be respected. It's the NFL Draft weekend in Detroit, so husband and I were in the area on Saturday evening and thought of checking this place out. This cute gem of a spot is located in the Eastern market area where there's plenty of parking nearby. We walked to the entrance of the restaurant and were greeted by this long stairwell of marigold flower garlands which were really pretty. We walked up the stairs and saw a sign that asked to seat yourself, which we really appreciated. We went up to our table and were quickly attended by the wait staff. We ordered some cocktails - I got the Goa Sunset and hubby got Kali's potion. Both drinks were really nicely made with the perfect amount of strength. That made us go for another round of drinks with our meals. Hubby went for a classic gin and tonic while I got the Kerala mule. Both drinks were delicious! For appetizers we got the veggie manchurian and pani puri which are classic Indian bar bites or street food items. For entree we shared a paneer tikka masala and a naan. Overall the food was very satisfying and the ambience was really cool. The lighting, the wall decor and colorful umbrellas on the ceilings make this place the perfect spot to hang out on weekends. We'd definitely love to come here with a group of friends! I'm going to give this place a full 5 stars because we definitely need more of these type of places with cute decor and yummy Indian food & drinks in Detroit. Went back to Midnight Temple again to try their new menu and we were blown away! My fiancé and I took our families together for a big group dinner and they were so hospitable. As always, the interior is one of the coolest in Detroit. For food, we ordered almost the entire menu and enjoyed every item. Surprisingly, the fish curry was a huge standout for me. I'd never tried Indian Branzino before and the flavors were incredible. The staples of chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, and biryanis were also very enjoyable. The different types of naan and paratha were also great additions - the paratha was perfectly flaky. The presentation of everything was gorgeous.
