Tucked away in downtown Fed, the shop's entrance makes the display case the star of the show, featuring their mouthwatering treats. We ordered a Sublime-inal and Vanilla Latte as well. Decided on the Midnite Cupcake which is chocolate chip cream cheese surprise tucked inside a decadent chocolate cupcake, topped with a sinful chocolate buttercream frosting. The cake is fluffy and cakey and not dense. I personally found the frosting to be a little too sweet but it is everything you want in a buttercream frosting. Wow, probably the best cupcake I've ever had! This small little shop is a gem in the Federal Hill neighbored. My friend and I were so grateful we stumbled upon this shop. They have standard cupcakes they have daily and a few specialty ones. Most cupcakes are $3.25 and well worth it. I had the one with carrot cake and she had a specialty butter pecan - both still so moist and the icing tasted like it was fresh and just put on. They offer a wonderful variety of cupcakes, such as Black Velvet, Full Moon, Eclipse, seasonal offerings, and even alcohol-focused ones (like the Mojito, Coffee and Cream, and Pina Colada). I tried the Strange Love (which was the Cherry Almond; this was so yummy, as it was a cherry almond cake, topped with a dried cherry; yum!); a Sinnabon (cinnamon roll-focused, but I kind of only tasted cinnamon and nothing else); Sublime-inal (a lemon cupcake topped with lime buttercream frosting; this was okay, but more on the sweeter side and more lemon-like), and Midnite (chocolate chip cream cheese tucked inside a chocolate cupcake, topped with chocolate buttercream frosting; this was true decadence and definitely for chocolate lovers!). The buttercream frosting is thick, but still light, but it is definitely on the more sweeter side, and the cake is more dense (which I'm a fan of). I'd love to check out more of their seasonal and other flavors, as this cupcakery seem to be more creative! Came here to see what some of the hype was about. I'm still lookin. When you walk in the store you'd expect a trapdoor to open or something because there's not a lot to this store. Seemed like a tailor's space...wide open, standing place, a few mirrors and not much else. Suddenly a guy walks out and asks to take my order, directing me to a glass case that features the cupcakes of the day. I also took a look at the menu & saw "after dark" cupcakes listed that contained liquor in them so I proceeded to ask said gentleman about them. Peep the exchange: Says he, "we don't have those today, we only offer those on certain days." Says me, "oh ok, what days are they?" Says he, "I'm not quite sure..." Says me, "............" So anyway there I am, torn between the Eclipse (Bourbon vanilla cupcake with chocolate buttercream frosting) and the chocolate chip cookie dough (vanilla cupcake with vanilla frosting & a cookie dough center). I asked him which would he suggest although his track record at that point wasn't looking too good. Excitedly, dude says "oh get the cookie dough, cause it's got cookie dough inside" so I run with it and pay my $3. As seen in my picture however, there wasn't anything inside my cupcake but two chocolate chips and a smidgen of mush that I could only assume was suppose to be cookie dough. The middle of my cupcake looked like a bowl of batter AFTER someone's 5 year old got a hold to it while the cake was baking in the oven. Translation: there were barely any traces of evidence left!!! There wasn't even an afterthought of cookie dough inside my cupcake, it was more like a dejavu. If the cream inside a twinkie is a rainstorm of filling, my cookie dough batter was virga when it came time to fill the cupcake. On top of that, the frosting was way too sweet and the cupcake a little too firm for my tastes. Tasted like a cake left out for too long & just on the brink of losing moisture. I MIGHT give this spot a try one more time just to try the after dark varieties but today's front man better HOPE he decided to take that day off. read more

I work near 3 well-known bakeries, and I will drive past all three and head straight to Midnite Confections when I need a good cupcake. As soon as you open the door you are hit square in the face with that "bakery" smell You know the buttery sugary warm smell that screams "come forth we have what you need." Their cupcakes have unique but complimentary flavor combinations. I had the subliminal on my last visit. It had a distinct lime taste without being overpowering or overly sweet. I grabbed a black velvet for a coworker and watched him and his wife fight over and annihilate the poor cupcake. It was crazy! But a definite endorsement. Especially since he initially complain that he though he was getting red velvet. The cupcakes themselves are light, warm, and moist. My wife and I stumbled upon this gem of a place after dinner on Light Street this weekend. We were looking for a place to have dessert and we happened to be close by. I love cupcakes. I have waited in line at Magnolia in New York, Kara's in San Francisco, and many in between. Midnight Cupcakery has them all beat. The cake itself is incredibly moist, probably because they bake them in small batches throughout the day. And then there's the frosting. Buttercream frosting is really hard to do well. It's often either too light and flavorless or too heavy and overly sweet. The Midnite Cucakery has solved this problem to perfection. Their buttercream was hands down the best I've ever had, both chocolate and vanilla. We also tried their cream cheese frosting, which was also delicious, but for my money you can't beat the buttercream. They frost your cupcakes to order, so you can mix and match flavors and styles, a nice touch that many other places don't allow. Sandra and Aaron are the owners and they run the place along with their sons. They do the baking, frosting and selling. I first discovered this Cupcakery a few years ago when I was planning a birthday party for my partner and could not find a place that made strawberry cupcakes (which was their fave.) Being that this was one of the only bakeries that had this flavor I decided to give it a try and I am so glad I did. These cupcakes were so decadent; sinful even. Made with real pieces of strawberry complete with a delicious most cake and even better frosting! I was completely blown away.
