The positives, waitress worked hard and never stopped. The fried rice was good, and the spring roll as well. The egg drop soup was ok. Now for the rest, The General Tsaos chicken was way overcooked, tough and chewy and extremely sweet, also I added some hot oil, but it had a very strange taste. My wife had been craving noodle soup all day. She ate a little bit of her soup and stopped (I've never seen her do this), and she didn't want to bring the rest home (about 3/4 bowl), said it was way too sweet, I also left mine and didn't get a box. I realize that they have some really good reviews, but I know of at least 6 places nearby that I like much better. Maybe it was an off day, really not sure, but we were both disappointed. read more

Flavors are super close to what it should be. You can tell when the head chef is there vs when he's not. Love coming here for my comfort foods: hot and sour soup, mapo tofu, fish, yang chow fried rice, beef chow fun. Service is quick and polite. The seating option is pretty decent. The key point which I appreciate is THEY DONT JUDGE IF YOU ARE DINING BY YOURSELF. Particularly, they don't judge how much you order if you are a lone diner dining in. You know what I mean. Ordered 1 safe dish - beef noodle soup and two dishes we were iffy on - beef tenderloin with mushroom and string bean, and tofu casserole. All dishes were superb. As you can see there was a Chinese menu. Just ask the waiter what is ordered frequently and they'll help you if willing to try something Authentic. All dishes paired very well w rice which is the cornerstone of Cantonese cooking. All were savory- Chinese soul food like, granda-ma like cooking. Not spicy but you can ask for hot sauce which theirs was great. They have a sambal olek like one and a chili oil one , both great. Neighboring customers' dishes also looked good. My family likes to buy our own lobster and fish and bring it to Chao Zhou to stir-fry and steam it for a small price (to give it more of that "wok hay" flavor). We stopped by a few days ago for dinner and the food was pretty average. The lobster that we brought was stir-fried well, but I wish it had more sauce. While it had more of a "wok hay" flavor than we could do at home, I expected a bit more oomph. The flavor was lacking and I wish it was a bit saltier, but the freshness of the lobster pulled through. I think they charge around 15.00 to stir-fry a lobster if you bring one in. The fish we brought was steamed and prepared well. I felt that the fish was a bit over-cooked and even braising it generously with the soy sauce-oil, it still lacked flavor. The pea shoots here were probably my favorite thing. The pea shoots were seasoned perfectly with a light amount of sauce and lots of garlic. They were also really fresh and had the perfect texture. We also enjoyed the walnut shrimp, which had huge and tasty shrimps mixed with a bit of mayo. The broccoli were surprisingly good (in most cases, I don't even think about the broccoli). The spicy salted squid was bland and not very spicy. We might have gotten another dish, but I forgot. The rice that comes with some of the dishes was not good. The quality was subpar at best, and the texture was mushy and unappealing. Overall, 3/5 experience for me. They seem to do vegetables here pretty well. read more

My family and I have eaten here and also gotten takeout from here several times and it's got solid authentic Chinese food. I will say, portion sizes are considerably bigger if you eat in the restaurant vs ordering takeout - just a tip. However, it always takes a long time for the food to come out, so that's something to consider too. Some of the dishes we've had: - Walnut shrimp: they serve the best I've had. They use freshly fried jumbo shrimp that was piping hot, flavorful broccoli, and crunchy candied walnuts. It was a good portion size. - Beef haw fun: they use fresh wide rice noodles that have great wok hei. It is filled with flavorful tender beef and they were generous with bean sprouts. - Lotus root stir fry: delicious savory sauce, great textures, but could have used more pork - that was pretty sparse. - Seafood chow mein: pretty good, but nothing special. Noodles were deep fried, ingredients were fresh, and they were pretty generous with toppings. The gravy was quite heavy on the ginger. - Peking style pork chops: generous portion, crunchy breading, pretty lean meat, and delicious sauce that goes well on rice. Service is like typical Chinese restaurant service you'd get in Toronto: they take your order, bring drinks and food, and that's it - no asking how everything is, no refilling water (but they did refill the teapot when we lifted lid up) It's quite cozy inside as it's small and doesn't have a ton of seating. This restaurant is definitely a mom and pop shop. Very easy parking in a convenient shopping center filled with other Asian businesses. This restaurant only has a small number of tables and what feels like maybe two employees the person that works in the front of the person that works in the back. we purposely came here during what we expected to be slow times, which really made a difference and not having to wait in line. Went here on a random Monday holiday and first- they were open! Had some shrimp dumplings, spicy green beans with chicken, and Mongolian beef. They have combos with fried rice and egg roll. The only detracting from 5 stars is the wait. I've taken many people to this hole in the wall now and the food never disappoints but that's because there is only one chef in the back making every single dish...hence the wait. But they serve authentic Cantonese cuisine and there is something comforting about the lack of ambiance and the lacquered tables that always seem to be full during any lunch or dinner rush. The price point is fair and portions generous. You can easily get away spending about $20-$25/person depending on what you order and might even have some leftovers. Try anything spicy salt - seafood, calamari, it never disappoints. I also love the beef and wide rice noodle (I forgot to grab a photo). Happy lunar new year! Came here to celebrate. Called in and got a reservation so we got a table pretty quick but it took a while for food to be made so at the half hour mark, we added a dim sum - chicken feet which came out right away. This was really helpful. Only 1 waitress - not sure how many in the back cooking. 15m later our food starts to arrive. First came the golden pumpkin. It's cut up into cubes and deep fried. It was a recommendation from the table next to us who were family friends we bumped into. It's got a really nice flavor. You get a little crispy salty egg yolk flavor on the outside and the sweet pumpkin flavor on the inside. Next came the pork chops. Deep fried again but a little different cuz it's a flavor bomb. You got the salt, pepper, garlic bed of lettuce w/ jalapeños flavor and the very tender meat on the inside with bone. Next came the wide rice noodle w beef. This is a classic dish I grew up eating at canto restaurants like these and it was very well done. Good wok hei flavor (the burnt aroma of the fiery wok) and tender pieces of beef and perfectly chewy pieces of rice noodle. And then came our pea tips which was nice and tender with good garlic flavor. Very healthy too! Finally, we tried a new dish - Hong Kong stir fry which had shrimp, jicama, garlic chives, carrots scallop, fried Anchovies, and a few shiitakes. It's very aromatic and I loved the crunchy bits of the tiny little fish. Overall, everything was delicious and the flavors were well balanced - nothing too bland or unless you got the word 'salty' in the name haha. But that goes really well with white rice which should complement every dish for that matter. Anyway, only thing holding this place back and a star is the service but that's understandable if you're busy or short staffed. Maybe a carry out is in store next time? I all but given up on finding good Asian food in Michigan. This place is legit, and comparable to the places in the SF Bay Area. I'm so glad to have found a restaurant that reminds me of Asian food in the west coast, and doesn't bastardize "Chinese food" with orange chicken and crab rangoons, neither of which are real chinese food. We ordered 5 dishes and they were all bangers. The eggplant dish really stood out to us. For those who cook chinese food at home, getting an eggplant perfectly juicy without overcooking and making it too oily is really hard, and they do it just right at Chao Zhou. read more

Recommended by a late family friend. I've tried multiple items from here (spicy salted squid, stir fried beans, chicken chow mein, black pepper beef, hot and sour soup, and so on). I have yet to have had a bad experience with the food here. One important thing to note is that if you purchase the livfrom the mart next door, the chef here will cook what you bring in. There is a charge for it, but it was worth it for the best lobster I've ever had, and that's saying something because I've had fresh Maine lobster. So I am definitely disappointed in the food here. I thought bc they were located next to the Chinese BBQ it would be really good. Unfortunately that was not the case. The service was very good which was nice. The young girl was very prompt, friendly & kind. And the kitchen was fast which was great. My food came out piping hot. Hopefully that worked out okay for them.... I ordered rice cakes with sautéed pork but they came with shrimp, pork & Chinese sausage. And that was perfectly fine! I was actually excited bc it was slightly different than my other experiences. But the rice cakes were either old or had not been soaked long enough in water. Usually you soak them overnight & then wok fry them. They were hard which was a drag. Also, the dish lacked any real flavor which was sad bc the ingredients were fresh & abundant. There were spring onions, green pepper & onion. But seriously. ZERO flavor. {sigh} I also had the spicy salty shrimp which was neither spicy nor salty. Also very bland although it was cooked perfectly. And the jalapeños were fried perfectly. Both entrees were generous portions too but nothing was flavorful or had any character at all. The decor is typical of your basic Asian restaurant. It is a smaller restaurant located in a strip mall so not a huge establishment. They had booth seating, and plenty of 2-4 top tables. The atmosphere was pleasant. The dining room floor needed to be cleaned also. And I saw an older Asian customer wipe down his table with a napkin when he was seated which was not very encouraging either. I did not use the restrooms so I cannot couch for the condition or cleanliness. The whole experience was very disappointing. I really wanted to like this place but the food was really Blaise. I only ate about 1/4 of each. I took the rest & gave it to a local homeless man. There are many other outstanding Chinese, Vietnamese & Thai in this area. I have been going here for the last 6 years. One of my favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurants providing true, authentic Chinese food. I am always more than willing to travel the 40 miles from Canton to Madison Heights. Since, we started going here in 2013, I am happy that they now have translations for their Anglo customers who read no Chinese. Today we had two noodle dishes, some Dim Sum, Salted and peppered shrimp and squid; and an order of salted and peppered shrimp. Delicious as always. Re-evaluating my previous review after coming back a couple times with my family. Food came out great and portions were generous for family style sharing. While deciding one day what to order I see a massive dish with noodles and piping hot chicken and veg. I ordered it and call it chicken wow mein. Fried noodles on the bottom that soften up as you tear into them. Awesome. Sooooo fine tune the place, hire a waiter and it will be a gem. Ok. I'm back again. Going on 1/2 hour for dim sum wait. Had the Taiwan beef noodle, it was ok, made with store bought noodles, the beef cuts in it were good, shumai was ok, salted shrimp wasnt salty at all but was edible. Everything was the kind of food you'd eat at that family member's home who isn't that great of a cook. Wanted honey drink, weren't serving that. Wanted boba tea, weren't serving that. I dunno, the server was nice. I just wasnt at all impressed enough to ever come back for any reason and i feel like the stuff we wanted to eat they just didn't feel like making. Oh!
