I originally came here for a Yelp event and enjoyed all of the food. My child wanted to dim sum, and for some reason all of the places closer to me were all closed on a Tuesday. Good news, we ended up here and she thoroughly enjoyed her experience here. The staff was so kind and helpful. This place also had a surprising amount of people coming in for lunch on a random Tuesday, but that is good for this place. We started with the Cantonese shrimp noodles. They are so delicious and nostalgic of places I would go to in Toronto in my childhood. The portion was so huge I now have noodles for days, which we are super happy about. We had the BBQ buns and pineapple buns, both really sweet, sticky and delicious. We had the rice noodles with shrimp and either beef or pork (not sure which one I actually ordered), I crave those, especially the shrimp ones. We tried the fried, crispy shrimp bean curd rolls with plum sauce and a favorite of mine, sticky rice. As always, we had tons of leftovers and look forward to having our meal for lunches and dinners this week. Terrible Dim Sum and terrible prices. Quality is horrendous and let me explain. Congee is full of flour instead of rice. Beef tripe has no flavor. 蘿蔔糕 turnip cake, the turnip and flour is separated so every bit you either get turnip or a mouth full of flour. Ground pork in dumplings is old so tasted gamey. 糯米雞Lotus wrapped chicken is too greasy, too much pork fat in the stuffing. Tea is $3.50 a person. If only one person in a group get tea they still charge everybody which is ridiculous. I don't have high hope for good quality dim sum in metro Detroit but this place should close soon. Basically they use the cheapest Ingredients they can buy and charge full price for it. Might as well buy frozen dim sum and steam it at home instead of wasting time and money here. read more

This is one of my favorites places to have dim sum and food in general. I can admit depending on where you sit service can be slower, but that doesn't stop the good food there. The waitresses are always so knowledgeable and welcoming and remembers me every single time we dine. The food is always hot and fresh and tastes amazing. They have a new rib on the dim sum menu that I really enjoy. The salted squid is good to me because it's not huge pieces, it's good sizes. I enjoy their Chinese broccoli and their fried rice is my favorite. Definitely give them a try and I'm sure you're going to enjoy it. I heard from my dinning out Meetup group that this was a good place for good dim sum. So I set up a meal there. I was able to get reservations. With lots of parking and a larger dining room, it is easy to dine. With most menu items in both Chinese and English, that is usually a good sign. When we got there, most of the other dinners where Asians, another good sign. The service was wonderful. But the food.... Dim sum menu is much more limited and in a few cases much higher priced than China Palace and Shangri La. While I am American, EBS taught me about good dim sum well. It was very average. Nothing I would come back for. Having can pop is not cool with me. Others that had either Traditional Chinese or American Chinese and liked it. Glad I tried, be will not be back. read more

Updating and decreasing my rating. Food quality was decent. We got multiple dishes to share (liang pi, duck soup, vege dish, shrimp with celer, steamed fish), each of which was authentically Chinese tasting. We were impressed by the savory home style taste of the duck soup - very warming to the heart. Here is where the restaurant lacked during dinner: 1) food portion. Total was greater than $ 140 incl. Tip. Small portions given the prices they charge. Fish was good but small (filled like 1/3 of the plate) - was nearly gone after 4 people each took 1 piece. Shrimp dish - maybe 6 pieces of shrimp? Rest was all celery. The duck soup was well made, however, barely had any duck and had a lot of soup. 2) Service: dinner - there were like 3 other tables dining in. For a receipt that lists a minimum 18% to 25% gratuity, service was poor, inattentive, and lacking. No water refills. No one was checking how food was. In fact, we saw waitresses eating in a far corner table. Had to ask for takeout boxes. Service in one word: nonexistent. 3) price/value: Along with point #1, it is too expensive. Average dishes at equivalent authentically Chinese restaurants are around $15 - 20. For dinner, the price is like $15 - 30 (and sometimes $30 - $50). For this price point, I expected a lot more food, but the quality of the food, while good, did not make up for exorbitant price points for authentic dishes. I think this place deserves more credit. I haven't found too many dim sum places in the area, but I'm happy to say this establishment now can be my go-to for dim sum. Dim sum is like Chinese tapas--various dishes in small portions. Some are steamed, and some are fried. Typically, they're eaten for brunch, but I'm so glad they serve dim sum all day long. It's like wanting to have breakfast for dinner. I love all the various dumplings, the steamed pork buns, and the pan-fried turnip cake. If you go on Sunday, they go around with the carts, offering various dishes available (which gives me the closest authentic experience to what I had when I was younger). The service is good. The staff are amiable and friendly. The ambiance is nice for a casual lunch or dinner. Parking is easy and they are good for groups as well. read more

After the fantastic Yelp Elite event, I wanted to tell every about how awesome Royal Palace is -- especially my parents during their visit. TL;DR: they loved it and thought RP rivaled the Chinese restaurants in Los Angeles! As we learned from the Yelp Elite event, RP is now under new management (Kevin and his awesome co-owner(s?))! I saw some of the same folks working as from the Yelp event so it was great to see some familiar faces. We ordered the dimsum (which came around in carts) as well as some items on the menu: *All the dimsum felt like it was made and cooked with love! There was attention to detail, quality ingredients. My parents really enjoyed their dishes especially the tripe stew (niu za, 牛雜). *We ordered the classic canto noodles - beef chow fun and seafood delight chow mian. All super tasty and not too oily. Good portions IMHO! *Salt & Pepper Tofu (椒盐豆腐)- we had this at the yelp event and I couldn't get over how tasty it was! So this prep of salt & pepper is usually made with other protein like squid or shrimp. It's so crispy on the outside but nice and silken on the inside. I took this home and ate it the next day (Air Fryer ftw) and it was AWESOME still. *Mango Pudding - so yummy! I wish this spot were closer to Ann Arbor because I'd go all the dang time! Several weeks ago i received an invite to attend a Yelp Elite event at this restaurant. I was unable to make it that night, but I was excited to know that there was a dim sum place nearby so I was glad when I had an opportunity to give it a try recently. We ordered several items from the dim sum menu. Unfortunately, they were out of the item we wanted the most - the baked BBQ buns. The other items we tried were average, at best. We also tried a couple of items from the "American Chinese" menu - fried rice and one of the chicken dishes. Again, decent, but nothing outstanding. Most of the items we chose were pretty plain. We had a lovely time here at a Yelp event, and were able to try sooo much food! I understand the new owners took things over about 6 months ago. The kitchen is making some amazing food... My favorite dish was the !Cashew Shrimp! Perfectly cooked shrimp with tender broccoli, onion, and peppers, all covered in a sauce that was far more complex and flavorful than its humble brown color led you to expect. The cashews were a perfect creamy crunchy complement. I've had cashew chicken, but never a dish like this. Where have you been all my life!?! Just fabulous, in every way! 5-Stars! A close second was the eggplant. It was served vegetarian style, but it's offered on the menu w meat as well. I don't really consider myself an eggplant lover, but this dish is worthy of an exception. The eggplant was smooth and creamy, and even had some hints of caramelization in an absolutely beguilingly delicious sauce. I can't believe it but it's true: I didn't miss the meat and I would order this again in a heartbeat. Beef Soup - mild and smooth, but the beef complemented the onions, mushrooms and tofu well, and overall it really worked! Dim Sum all had a perfect soft tender cook. The noodles were tender and the pork bun was just perfectly soft and complemented the filling so well. The shrimp dim sum also shone with great flavor. What a delicious treat! Cumin Beef brought a load of flavor and a pleasantly flavorful bite w some heat! I'd def mix w rice. Garlic Salt Tofu was nice and crisp, and creamy inside. The fried rice was maybe not as typical as others I've tried but I appreciated the flavor profile as different than a typical brown soy sauce flavor. It was subtle but good, and was made w a more glutinous sticky rice than you may be used to. I wish our soy sauce bottle wasn't sticky. Sesame chicken - a classic Americanized dish in a cravable sticky-sweet sauce was pretty good, but my standard is still Chinese Sizzling in Dundee. The creamy smooth mango fish gel was a cool and just-right-sweet end to an epic series of choices. Our servers were all so kind and attentive. I felt they truly cared about our experience. I know they are still getting situated. I hope they'll soon fix the men's room door to stay closed and make sure the bathroom is super clean! The decor of the dining area looked good. Coming from Oakland in the San Francisco Bay Area I was looking for some great Chinese food. Wow did royal palace deliver. We had chow fun, dim sum, peppered chicken and salt and pepper tofu and I'm already making reasons to make the 30 min drive back here. The service was great. Our server was polite friendly and had great suggestions. We are looking forward to trying the cart service for the dim sum, and I'm sorry there are no food pictures a I was so excited when they brought us our food that I just started digging in. Inside the restaurant is nicely set tables, some with lazy Suzans and I love the red cups the water comes out in. Very nostalgic to my childhood. This is the best Chinese food we've found here in Michigan and can't wait to go back. read more

Six of us went for dim sum on a Saturday. We thought for sure we'd have to wait but it wasn't busy. This place has a picture menu in English and Chinese and they also have the push carts. We ordered a few entrees and dim sum from the menu and picked a couple of items from the carts. The vermicelli noodle dish tasted burnt. Too much wok hei! The stir fried noodles was okay but the sauce was too thick, maybe half a teaspoon too much cornstarch! Everything is pretty darn pricey but we wanted to try this place after hearing good reviews. The menu says they automatically charge 15% for 6 people or more. However, they were sneaky and charged us 18%!! The decor isn't great but it is definitely less tacky than when it was East Lake. Stopped in on Labor Day for some dim sim. This place has changed ownership thru the years. I enjoy the fact that they still come around with the carts, dim sum isn't the same without them. Ordered the usual shrimp dumplings, shao mai, chicken feet, fried turnip pancake, beef balls, and Chinese broccoli. Overall the dim sum was ok. Flavors were not very pronounced, left a little to be desired. I am comparing dim sum to that of Chicago which I feel is quite good. I love beef chow fun and order it at every Chinese restaurant. Again flavor was just lacking. I did appreciate how large there water cups are. They are the extremely tall red plastic cups. Newer Chinese in Troy. Old location for East Lake Chinese. They had me at fried sesame balls. They are open until 1:30AM. Appear to have one karaoke room, fairly sound proof. Just hear the music when the door opens and muffled sound when the door is closed. Oh it gets quite loud when the peeps start singing though. The interior is set up like a banquet center. The big round tables are ready for large parties with the fabric covered chairs. The black bean clams, garlic abalone, garlic and salt squid looks good, so does the sesame chicken and the king crab all look decent. Ordered crab Rangoon, general Tso chicken, braised mushroom with Chinese kale, Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce and fried sesame balls. $56.94, less crab Rangoon. It's been over 20 minutes and still no crab Rangoon. There's only 3 tables of guests in the main dining area and then the karaoke party. 25 minutes later we have some thick wonton crab Rangoons. The crab Rangoon wonton tastes like it's quite stale. The crab and cheese stuffing is cold, like right out of the fridge cold. It's probably the worst crab Rangoon I have ever eaten. The starter may set the precedence for how the rest of the meal will be. Not looking forward to the rest of the meal. Luckily the rest of the food was better and piping hot too. Thank goodness the general tso isn't too bad. The breading is light and actually crispy. Sauce is okay. Just a slight hint of spice to it, not much thought. The Chinese broccoli with the oyster sauce was okay. My hubby didn't like it much, so I was stuck eating much of it. The braised mushroom and cabbage wasn't too bad. Service is good. Food is average. Skip the crab Rangoon. Kudos to them, they accept Amex here, they support small businesses. read more

This is a hidden gem for authentic Chinese food! The interior needs a little work (new management of 6 months) so I'm hoping this will get worked out so the inside shines as bright as the authentic dishes. The dim sum did not disappoint and could eat it daily. Outside of the normal cuisine I recommend the incredible beef soup - it IS truly incredible. I also recommend the salmon mango pudding - it's shaped like a fish!! It is also the most refreshing and light dish I have ever had. It is truly the perfect thing for the end of a big meal. What a delicious evening! This newly spruced up restaurant is under new ownership. Kevin the new owner welcomed us so kindly, love his energy. The waitstaff was so accommodating and friendly. The Miso Soup is on point. A delicate broth with just the right amount of the freshest mushrooms and bits of pork; a hearty soup for sure. I'd love to come back and try more Dim Sum. I wonder if they have plans for chicken feet which are delicious but I did not see them on the menu as of yet. The crispy tofu is served with crispy bits and scallions; I will be craving this. It's served piping hot and extra crispy we didn't even need a dipping sauce. The Cumin beef had the tiniest kick of spice, so tender and my favorite main dish of the night. The Eggplant hot pot was so sweet and savory, so velvety in another delicious brown sauce. We finished our meal with Mango Rice Pudding, creamy not overly sweet with a hint of mango. Have you heard of the 3.5 star rule for Chinese restaurants? I encourage you to Google it because this is where Royal Palace perfectly falls. We'd been here just a week earlier for a Yelp Elite event. We'd had a good time and felt encouraged to try more, and as luck would have it, we were back in the area the next weekend just in time for dim sum. This is where the 3.5 rule comes in. The dim sum was the best I've had when it comes to the Metro Detroit area. It was fresh, tasty, and delicious. It really just hit that perfect feeling of comfort food, and if we lived closer, we would definitely come by more often. Then there's the flip side. The service is not great. You never know when the dim sum cart is going to come. It's not clear what food items you have to order from a waiter or what will eventually come on the food cart. We were seated in a corner of the restaurant, and often times, the cart was a emptier by the time it got to us. And so we waited. Hungry and sad. When we came for the Yelp Event, the owner seemed eager for feedback, so I hope you're out there listening! We'd really love for there to be a way to order exactly what you want from a waiter but also have some spontenaity with the carts as they go through the tables. We were really stuck starving at our table, never knowing when the dim sum carts were going to make their way to us and getting shrugged off by waiters who said to wait for the dim sum carts. I hope you find a better system for this because this place would really get my 5 stars once it found that sweet spot. I'll be back here again. I've just got to cross my fingers when we take our seat and see how long it takes to get some food. read more

This was the best experience I've had with this tradition of food! It was So good it may be my new favorite place to eat!!! The soup was so comforting and delicious! I'm not sure of all the names of the food But oh my days I tore it up. Everything that was served was the best thing ever. I remember having the eggplant dish! The squid! Sesame chicken! Curry beef! Flower tea! Almond or cashew shrimp! EVERYTHING TASTED AMAZING I mixed fried rice with the eggplant dish and the cashew shrimp and it was a whole different flavor! There was even fried tofu!! (First time ever having that and I also tore it up lol) The service was immaculate and impressive! Very fast very hot very tasty! I loved the venue vibe to the place, the chandelier was my favorite, made me feel like I should've dressed up some more haha! Which is great! There is also so much to choose from on the menu I really recommend coming here with family! The spinning tables are great and I want one in my house now. The whole restaurant itself brought us all together as a family! One thing I would add just as recommendations; Prettier cutlery! Nice heavy shiny silverware! I am going to be honest. Coming from California, especially the San Gabriel Valley and SF Bay Area with some of the largest concentrations of Chinese Americans, there's quite a bit expectation or lack of expectation for Chinese restaurants outside of these areas. My partner recently moved out to Detroit for school so we're scoping the area out for comforts of home. We've been keeping our expectations fairly low so we don't get too disappointed and primarily aiming to get a craving satisfied. With that said, we were really taken by surprise by this place. And we mean it in a positive way. The staff speaks Cantonese, which dim sum is associated with. The menu translation, not the greatest and also funny in my opinion. The place where it really shines is the food. The dim sum was actually good. Better than some places back in California! Prices are reasonably priced. The 2 of us left with a bill under $40 that would've been easily $60 back in CA. We got your staples: siu mai, har gow, chicken feet, porridge, glutinous rice with lotus leaf wrap (lo mai gai), shrimp rice roll, BBQ pork bun. The flavors are there. The BBQ pork bun was more sweet than savory; different than what I'm used to. The shrimp rice roll can use more soy sauce but that's a simple ask. Everything else on point! Also, they push dim sum carts! Those things are rare these days since the pandemic so it was really nostalgic! If you're ever craving dim sum, this is the place to check out in this part of the state/country. We left VERY happy. read more

Stopped in and sampled several different dishes from this restaurant, this was part of a Yelp event The restaurant first walking in is very nice and upscale Asian Restaurant, this isn't nor will be your down the street Mom and Pop stop. The decor overall is nice and upbeat looking with a good amount of natural light which is definitely something you don't see in typical Asian Restaurants. The restaurant was just taken over 6 months ago and they are still working on the bathrooms with renovations. The waitstaff was friendly and were always looking to serve water. We were served many dishes all were great tasting .... The best was a Spicy Beef the flavor and the Spice were GREAT!!! The best by far.... The dessert.... This was something I never expected which was a Mango Jello Koi Fish.... The Jello was fresh and the flavor was amazing!!! This dessert on a hot summer day would be perfect!!! I'd love to come back on a day which wasn't an event and make sure the quality and service was as exceptional as it was the night of the Yelp event. If it is... my opening comment will stand true! Came here for Yelp event and the new co-owner who came on board Mr. Zhang was telling us about how he acquired it 6 months ago and he wants to showcase this type of food to the community. I was excited because the last time we were here, it wasn't the best. Then all the food came rolling out to all of us elected and they said the dim sum is made in house, expectations are high to say the least. And guess what, it was met and then some! Everything was delicious. My favorite was the cumin beef - great spicy cumin flavor and the beef almost was like a dehydrated jerky texture. The cashews on the shrimp and broccoli dish was amazingly crunchy and was quite lovely touch. The fried tofu needed more flavor and the skin/batter was a little thick. And that 'fish' - that jiggling 'fish'! The only place you can get it in Michigan. It's a beautifully presented dessert - mango pudding. What a wonderful way to end off a great multi course meal. Where to start! First of all, the staff and the owner were absolutely wonderful. They were attentive and asked for our honest feedback and really listened which I appreciated. The food was delicious! I loved the more authentic foods but they also have a great variety of American Chinese as well. The dim sum were so delicious I forgot to take a picture! The steamed pork buns and shumai had a great flavor. The soup was absolutely delicious as well and very hearty. The eggplant dish and cashew shrimp were my favorite. The flavors and textures were spot on. The tofu was also delicious - the outside was super crispy while the inside melted in your mouth. The cumin beef and the sesame chicken were not bad - the beef was very seasoned and the sesame chicken is exactly what you'd expect for an American Chinese dish. The fried rice bad a good flavor and the curried squid was definitely unique! We loved the mango pudding, not only because of the shape, but also because of the milky consistency and the fact that it wasn't too sweet. I couldn't tell by the photo, but the Cantonese Style Vegetarian Stir-Fried Noodles were not the type of noodle I wanted, BUT it was still really delicious. The Steamed AND Pan Fried (yes, we got both) were so flavorful. While the delivery took longer than I'd like (DoorDash), everything tasted amazing and the driver was pleasant. I love this spot, and it's become a bi-weekly goto for my family. The staff is great, the dining room is charming, and the quality of food is awesome. We tend to come for dinner (though we fully intend to make it for a proper dim sum cart meal service), but love that there is still a limited dim sum availability so we can get our egg tart fix. Without fail, I'm ordering the garlic salt fried tofu, soy sauce noodles, and peppered chicken and leaving full and happy. I also really appreciate that their menu has a balance between Americanized and traditional Chinese food as it can be difficult to find a spot that doesn't lean fully one way or the other. read more

3.5 Stars. Went here for a Yelp event and they gave us VIP treatment, but wanted to go again in an informal setting to get a better sense of this place. I had been here many time under the previous ownership, and was glad to see that younger blood had taken it over. There has been a significant upgrade in the decor. This is the East Lake Chinese Restaurant that has been here for years, but came under new ownership not too long ago. My first few experiences at the restaurant under new ownership were not great, but since then, my experiences have been great. They offer a good variety of dim sum dishes and food comes out on the push carts. The staff speaks Cantonese and presumably Mandarin well. So far they don't seem to be busy, so it's lovely to be able to just walk in and be seated immediately. A stark difference from dim sum restaurants in other cities. We'll definitely be back and this restaurant has become one of our regular dim sum places in Michigan. read more

I attended a multi course Yelp event. The multiple courses were a great experience for trying some great new food. The eggplant, mango pudding, and one of the chicken dishes were my favorites. The service was great and the owner very friendly, welcoming and informative. This is new ownership and many nice improvements have been made to the interior. The restrooms are in great need of updating and better ventilation which is why this is a four star rating rather than five. Everyone should be able to find food to enjoy. don't understand the 3 star review, maybe the sterotype that "good asian places are the 3 stars ones" is real. We went for Sunday dim sum and only got items from the cart. we got 1000 yr egg congee, beef tripe, spare ribs, beef short ribs, and chicken sticky rice balls etc are all great and not expensive. Excellent experience! My first time having Din Sum and it was amazing. My son just returned from living 10 years in Taiwan and he was looking for some familiar food. So for my birthday we tried Royal Palace. We were greeted warmly and seated right away in a large open dinning room. The decor was traditional and we felt very much at home. The staff were very fast, attentive and friendly. We could hear singing towards the back and my son said it sounded like karaoke going on. It sounded fun and added to the atmosphere. The menu as impressive and an adventure. There is an entire world of Din Sum to explore. The menu was well organized and included both Chinese & English names for the items along with pictures. I recommend experimenting and have fun trying new exciting foods. The hand made Spring rolls were delicious as was the curry Cuttlefish. All the items came with 2 to 4 pieces each so it is a perfect place for a date with someone who likes to try new things. The Mango Pudding was just the right ending for a wonderful experience. Edit: - 2 stars for a truly disgusting restroom. If you can't clean the bathroom stalls properly, what's happening in the kitchen? It's unfortunate because the food is great but the cleanliness makes me not want to return. My table was obviously not wiped down before I was seated, either, and so sticky it makes me wonder if it ever is... Really great Dim Sum! I loved everything I got. The squid might have been slightly overdone, but still delicious! The waitress was super nice too, even if she thought I was wierd for ordering so much food for myself (this was round 2!) .
