Either way it doesn't detract from the quality of the rolls. Cashier was friendly and the order was made pretty fast - for a walk in order with 3 rolls, an hour before closing- it only took 15mins. Very, very good sushi place. One thing you'll notice opening into this super poppy to-go box, is that this stuff is some of the cheapest in the area but yet, they are bigger than the average roll. I mean look at these things, they're freaking huge. While browsing the large menu of sushi products they have, I tell the passive aggressive front desk lady I wanted a Crunch Roll, the Dutchess, and Pad Thai for my girlfriend. Total came up to 40 which was insane for two rolls and Pad Thai, at least considering everything we know now. Super cheap. By the way, as soon as you walk in this place, you wanna eat here, the smell of fresh sushi is truly attention grabbing. Back to the food, the to-go boxes took care of everything I needed to dig in. Unfortunately I suck with chop sticks so I impatiently balled with a fork on this one, so sorry if that offends you. Frankly, you can cry about it. Digging into the Crunch Roll, the mixture of every ingredient, the signature crunch that the name suggested, and the satisfying texture accumulated all into one intoxicating bites. Such a catchy taste and it feels quite original. I had high hopes for this place so as soon as I was done with the Crunch Roll I didn't hesitate to dig into the Dutchess, which was quite a raw taste. Not my particular style of sushi, but still very good. The cucumbers might've been what did it for me, I can't stand that crunch, yuck. I started to lose confidence so I quickly opened up my first fortune cookie, which lo and behold- It had no fortune in it. As the sweat drips off my chin into the Pad Thai that I was just seconds away from indulging, I saw a second fortune cookie in our bag. I rushed to crack it open and... "You should always rest, even when you don't have time to rest." The only thing resting is my jaw up against the floor after I tried this delicious Pad Thai. Truly a great chicken and noodle dish, and is still the only food out there that actually tastes the same when you put it in the microwave. The fortune cookie was right, I should always rest. I order from this place at least once a week both in person and via DoorDash and always tip the crew. This time I ordered online and asked if they could add cream cheese to my order (like I always do) but there's not an option for it online so I called. it's $1 to add it and they simply wouldn't just add it to my order this one even though I am frequent customer. it was pretty annoying because I could see if I asked for something that cost more than $1. With timing of making your food, they do not skimp out on the quality. The service is concise, quick, and to the point. This is a small place to either order online or to order for pickup, not to sit and dine. Only thing that I can truly complain about was the Japanese fried rice. It definitely tasted burnt with flecks of charred pieces of meat and partially burnt rice in the mix; not the best tasting but the sushi is always a good choice and go to. read more

Note this review is from 02/14/2025 I'm not sure if it I always this crowded on a Friday or if it was because it was Friday AND Valentine's Day. Someone in the huge crowd I waited with said it's never that crowded. I really feel like if they were organized a little better the process could have went smoother. It took other customers waiting to start calling out the names on the orders that were ready before the staff started to do so and, even then it was kind of random when they would do it. I ordered the salmon on the beach roll and the rainbow roll and was told the wait would be 30 minutes...def should have ordered by phone. The waiting area was PACKED. They said they were backed up due to a huge order they were trying to fulfill . I was wishing that they had a double door because it was freezing, especially whenever someone opened the door to go in or out. I ended up going to my car to wait. All in all I ended up waiting a little over an hour for my food, the last 20 minutes in that freezing lobby again. However...My rolls were delicious! My favorite was the rainbow roll. They were both HUGE, I've never had sushi rolls that big. I was a little disappointed that I didn't get the cute little bento box but there's always next time. I would for sure go back but definitely NEVER on a Friday/holiday. Note: Came back a second time )and third and fourth, etc. lol) and the experience was so much smoother lol. Tai Fai is hands down our go to sushi spot! I've always liked sushi, but Tai Fai takes it to a whole new level. I don't think it's the most authentic sushi restaurant, (like a lot of over the top rolls, deep fried options, cream cheese additions), but it's pretty standard from what I've seen from sushi restaurants around metro Detroit. Some of my favorites are their sunshine morning roll, sumo roll, tai fai roll, spider roll, Ferndale roll, dancing eel roll, crunch roll, salmon nigiri, crab rangoons, and miso soup. Every friend I have told about this place ends up trying it and loving it as well. It's just a great spot, fresh food, and friendly staff. They don't have seating inside -- it's a pretty small area with just enough room for people to wait for their takeout orders -- but it's super easy to place your order online and pick it up. They also offer delivery through DoorDash. They also have other Asian dishes here aside from sushi, but I have a hard time branching out to try anything else when the sushi is crave-able! I ordered takeout while visiting the area on a Friday evening. I was able to place my order over the phone. The communication barrier was a little challenging given that you order by the food title versus a number. But after we got past this I was told my order would be ready in 15 minutes which surprised me given the fact that the parking lot had a lot of traffic of people entering in and out of the restaurant. Nevertheless, the food was ready very fast. The restaurant is only takeout and there is no dining room. You get a full view of the kitchen from the very small lobby. I was amazed with the number of people working in the restaurant given how small it is. But there had to be at least 10 people working in very tight quarters. When arrived to pickup my food it was found without incident I paid and quickly left. The parking can be a little tight. I felt like my car was close to being hit while someone was trying to back out of the lot. Now to the food: the presentation was AMAZING. The boxes that the sushi is presented in are beautiful. I've never seen anything like it for food service. The box alone makes it worth the experience of going. The food we order was really good. My dining companion had the Ferndale and Malibu rolls. I had the Philly and avocado role. We also had the curry vegetable dish. Everything was fresh and had great flavor. I highly recommend! read more

This place is honestly TOO good... I find myself wanting to order here multiple times a week which just is not feasible. If I could, I would eat this sushi every day. The lettuce wraps are absolutely delicious as an appetizer or entree, and the Hawaii tempura roll is legitimately one of my favorite things I've ever eaten. Their fish is also always fresh and tender without having the freezer or old taste like a lot of local places I've experienced. Our favorites that I haven't already mentioned are the Philadelphia roll, the Sunshine Morning tempura roll, and the good classic tuna rolls. I decided to try Tai Fai after seeing a few tik tok videos. It's located in a small strip mall and easy to overlook. I went on Saturday night and it was crowded. I'm glad I placed my order ahead of time because the orders were coming in fast. I ordered the crab meat wontons & spring rolls as my appetizer. Both were crunchy and full of flavor. I didn't care for the sauce that came with them but they really didn't need a sauce. The rolls are served in a beautiful box that makes you think of an upscale restaurant. I ordered the crunch roll and a red dragon roll. I was pleasantly surprised at how good everything tasted. I will be back and have already told my friends to give them a try. read more

Wow, it's been a long time since I had my one and only experience here, and after seeing an ad for them, I was reminded of my previous good experience. It was SO GOOD!! I have pics of everything we got, but we got a good variety. Everything was such a good version of itself. The miso soup was fresh tasting and had a variety of flavors to it with the seaweed and green onions. The sweet and sour chicken was crispy, and the pineapple and carrots had awesome flavor to them. The fried rice has a tasty bbq flavor to them, where you can tell it was fried on a hibachi. Not much chicken in it, but this wasn't bothersome to us. My 4 year old ate the fried rice for the first time and said it's her favorite rice! The sizzling green beans were SO crunchy and had such a perfect, tasty sauce. Chicken was quality and sliced thin. The sushi knocked it out of the park for all the rolls. We can't wait to go back! It's not the closest but it's our official default. read more

I want to start by saying we love the food at this place and have been customers since they first opened. However the service on this order was not up to par. I placed a catering order for a graduation party a week in advance and had text confirmation of the order with the time we could pick it up before the party. We showed up at the restaurant at our confirmed time and were told that they didn't have the order and that it was never confirmed. I had people arriving for a party in less than an hour and needed the food. Thank god I had the text messages showing the order had been confirmed or I would have had no food, because I had the text they agreed to start the order then and we could pick it up in 30 minutes. So they did get it ready and it was good but that needed stress was not what we wanted to deal with right before we had guests arriving. The 3 star rating is because the food was 5 star but the service and mix up was 1 star so I averaged it at 3 stars. Also I would have expected an apology or discount to make up for the mix up which we did not get. read more

I see other people ordering in the restaurant and receiving their food before me. This happened three times before I get up and ask if my order ready yet. It's now 6:57 and he says not yet. I sit back down and observe my order being prepared at 7:05. It's now 7:14 when the cashier calls my name and says, "you know you arrived early right". "On the ticket it says that your order would be ready at 7:07 pm". "So we are only late by seven minutes". I stated that I arrived at 6:45 and watched at least five orders placed after mine be ready BEFORE my order. He says, "but you were early, and we are only seven minutes late". Whenever I'm craving sushi to enjoy in my living room, Tai Fai is it! Their food is always fresh and delicious. For it to be pretty much a carry out spot it's always neat and clean. I love that they allow you to buy things you don't want/need to put on the walls for others to use to enjoy that does want/need them. It's a great idea for paying it forward. Sorry I don't have any pics because I usually eat the yummy food up without thinking about a picture! I love the fried crab stick appetizer. It's always cooked perfectly. I live a few blocks away and, seeing this unassuming tiny place, stopped in on a lark a year ago. What a find. I've tried a number of their inventive and delightful rolls, and intend to try some of the Chinese-style lunches and other dishes. In the meantime, I can't rave enough about them.
