    Midtown Stomp
    Holly S.

I've been in and out of the Sacramento swing (dance) scene for a while now. After my latest hiatus, I was pleased to find that Midtown Stomp had surfaced practically in my own backyard. It's at the Eastern Star Ballroom (sounds exotic, no??), across the street from Sutter's Fort on Friday nights. Classes at various levels (including beginning) lead up to a general dance at 9 p.m. They have live bands ~ once a month. I've been taking lessons with Matt and Kara, and they're great - although there seems to be a lot of talent on the staff, so I imagine most of the classes are of pretty good quality. My only complaint about Midtown Stomp is the same one I have about every dance venue I've ever been to anywhere - there's never enough ventilation. Especially in the summer. But that's just my pet peeve, and to be fair, I don't think there's a lot to be done aside from strategic fan placement. Anyway, go check it out, have fun, learn something. You don't need a partner...in fact most people go as singles. You can sign up for classes (series start on the first Friday of each month) on their website or at the door.

We paid for a VIP booth and ordered Don Julio, which was honestly really disappointing. I've had Don Julio many times before and it has never tasted like this. The bottle tasted off and gross, which made us uncomfortable drinking it. The floor was constantly wet, not just normal club conditions. My brother slipped and fell hard. At the time he tried to make the best of it, but later ended up in a lot of pain and still IS in a lot of pain . That's a serious safety issue and shouldn't be happening and I hope the owner can message me to address that considering he was badly hurt . On top of that, someone stole our bottle directly from our VIP booth, which shows a lack of monitoring or security for something we paid extra for. Also, while the music itself was good, the banda came out really late, which added to the frustration but it's cool that they offer Banda . To add ,I understand it's a club and people are dancing, but floors shouldn't be that slippery, alcohol quality should be consistent, and paid VIP areas should feel secure. Overall, it was a ok... first experience.

Ace of Spades is primarily a general admission, standing-room-only venue. I understand that's part of its model, but what I struggle with is the cost of having access to a seat. Reserved seating can run $100-$150 per seat, which feels excessive. As someone with a chronic back issue, it's frustrating that the option to sit down during a concert comes with such a steep additional cost. Basic accessibility and comfort shouldn't feel like a luxury upgrade. There were also a few moments during Alex Isley's set when the sound briefly blipped while she was singing. Music didn't stop, singing sounded off. It wasn't constant, but it was noticeable enough to pull you out of the experience. On a positive note, the Good Luck Lounge was a great addition. The atmosphere was welcoming, the DJ was excellent, and the finger foods were surprisingly good. It definitely enhanced the overall experience before the show. The staff at both AOS & GLL were excellent! That said, the seating situation remains a major drawback for me. Unless it's an artist I really, really want to see, Ace of Spades isn't a venue I would choose. The performers are often great, but the overall experience doesn't justify the premium pricing for something as simple as a place to sit.

I also have documentation and prescriptions for all of my medications. I asked if I can remove all other items in my bag ( lip gloss, chapstick, black gel pen, and hair ties) and they still said no. I then came back WITHOUT my bag and she said I couldn't come in because I was previously denied for my bag or as they say " Since we seen it in the past the policy still stands" I literally had to laugh out loud but then let my 3 friends in with fanny packs & cross body before me? I was in the back of the line and was next after my friends got checked and that's when I was denied entry the second time despite not having my bag or anything besides my phone and Id. Because of my epilepsy, I'm unable to drive, so when I go out I have to rely on public transportation, Lyft, or Uber. That means carrying my medication with me is a necessity, not something I can simply leave in my car. I completely understand that businesses have security policies and restrictions on bags. However, I was disappointed that there wasn't an accommodation. I've been to other Sacramento establishments, including The Depot, Dive Bar, The Merc, and Low Brau, where staff were able to accommodate me while allowing me to keep my bag with my medication with me. The security seem to have a reoccurring issue with customers based on the reviews on both yelp and google so that being my experience as well seems to add up. What makes this especially disappointing is that I was actually really excited to check Faces out, especially because I was looking forward to creating content there. Unfortunately, being denied entry over the medical bag left a very negative impression and completely changed my experience before I even had the opportunity to visit. I hope management considers having a clear policy for medically necessary medication and makes sure staff know how to handle situations like this appropriately. People with medical conditions shouldn't have to choose between carrying essential medication and being able to enjoy an establishment.
