I recently moved from the city and needed to find a new vet for my two Rottweilers, Apollo and Flex. Flex had been losing weight and not eating, and I was honestly a wreck inside. I came across this practice on Yelp and noticed so many pet owners praising Dr. Clive's genuine, heartfelt care--and now I understand why. My 4yo Sheepadoodle had never needed anything more than a check-up at the vet for his whole life, and while Midtown was excellent and thorough with those yearly checkups, I'm writing about our recent experience involving a traumatic injury from a dog daycare accident. After emergency surgery and through an eight-week long healing process, every single person at Midtown played an instrumental role in his recovery. So much so, that I know for a fact that the injury and impact would have been so much worse had it not been for Midtown's attentiveness and patience. My 3 cats had been going to another vet practice for almost ten years but the quality of care had been steadily declining recently and staff turnover was here today, gone tomorrow. I rarely saw the same tech twice. A friend highly recommended Midtown Vet and my 18 y/o boy had his first visit last week. Dr. Cline was very gentle with him, he has a lot of arthritic pain and needs more care handling than most. I was very impressed with the thorough exam, uncovering things that had been missed by my former vet. I have been to many, many vet practices over many years and I think we have found a new home. The clinic is a bit small, still building out in the new location, but clean and neat and comfortable. Soon they will have separate dog and cat areas which is almost a necessity for me. Dr. Clive was thorough, explained everything in detail, offered treatment/care options and was very compassionate and understanding. As someone else noted, they are not in the retail business, always pushing their products that can all be purchased elsewhere for less. They are amazing! I took my kitten that I rescued for an infection in her tail that had been amputated by another vet that was still had ongoing infection despite of meds. They truly care for your pets, they did another round of treatment and another round of amputation as well. They are quite pricey but it was 100% worth it! Dr Clive and the team around him have practiced first- rate medicine on our dog for six years. They are professional, thorough and compassionate. We have not found a weak link on the team, and offer a special shout out for their dentistry practice. You do pay for the outstanding care, but in our experience they are worth the premium. I've been going to see Dr. Clive for over 10 years. He and his team are just absolutely amazing. They truly care about pets and their owners. I've been to other vets around town and even though I've moved 30 minutes away, there's nothing like the best. I took my 14 year old chihuahua, Baby Bella, to a vet close by because she was crying incessantly about raising her leg. They did an x ray on her leg and found nothing. A week later she was still hopping so I took her back and they observed her for 3 hours, again nothing. $500 later and 2 weeks later without any progress I booked an appointment for Bella to see Dr. Clive on Thursday. They were concerned and said, they would call back to see if I could bring her in sooner. Sure enough, they called the same day and I was able to bring her in today (Wednesday). Within TWO minutes, he said "Bella has either a cancerous tumor or infection in her toe/ digit and in my experience, it will likely need to be amputated". Not proud to admit it, but I started crying almost immediately. One thing you can always expect is for them to be incredibly thorough and understanding. You can also expect for him to show you the evidence behind your pets needs! I remember taking Bella's mom to him when she was pregnant and he showed me the X-ray so I could see how many puppies she was expecting. Another time, he showed me the bacteria in a microscope to see the bacterial infection my dog had in her paw. So cool! Back to today, Dr. Clive stopped, and said "I'm so sorry, she will be okay. I hate delivering bad news. Here are the next steps...". He was so kind. They checked to see if the cancer metastasized to other organs or other digits in her paw. They were able to squeeze Bella in to have the surgery that day. The surgeon came to talk to me before the surgery. She was so sympathetic and explained the procedure. The technician, Alexandra was there along the way staying positive and sharing how experienced the team is. She's been taking her pet there for 5 years before she joined the team. Bella had her toe amputated, cancer had not spread. I had to leave because I was emotional. When I went to pick her up, she was at the front desk with Alexandra. The surgeon was there to explain next steps. The other staff came in to share how great Bella did with her surgery. They also offered to stay late if Bella needed. They go out of their way to make us feel special. There are no words to express how grateful I am to the tremendous team at Midtown Vet. They really show the utmost care to pets. From the beginning to the end of the experience, year over year, consistently wonderful. Thank you Dr. Clive and to the rest of your team. You all are angels. read more

Midtown and Dr Clive + Lang + Haverson over the years have truly transformed our rescues. We saved 2 poodles. One was in horrible shape, and she's truly a different dog after 3+ years of care at Midtown. They've helped us navigate eplilepsy, IBD, skin diseases, eye diseases, and more. We have been receiving care here for the past 5 years and am sad that we are moving and have to change vets. You can tell Dr. Clive loves what he does and practices evidence based medicine. First of all, you can really tell that Dr. Clive loves what he does and truly cares for animals. My two star review is not directed at him. The pricing is on par (which is quite high) with other inner loop vets. This is defiantly not a discount vet, but I was willing to pay for convenience and an expectation of exceptional service. The parking is not ideal, due to limited space as well as a weird angle that causes the front end of my car to scrape, even entering at an angle. The two star review and reason I'm going to find a new vet is due to staff member, Carla, being extremely rude, followed by her hanging up the phone on me. I was informed that my dog did in fact have heart worms. I received a call with the news and was informed of the different treatment options (fast kill and slow kill). I requested that they email me the information as well as pricing for each option. I was emailed the fast kill option and pricing. Never received quotes for the other options. I called to request the info be emailed to me. Carla calls me back to say that they only offer fast kill or slow kill by preventative treatment. I explained to her that is not what I was told on the original call. Just before she hung up on me, she said that we were not going anywhere with this conversation. I foster dogs and have to drive as far as Nederland for their appointments. They receive great care and fare prices. Dr is good but the staff sux! They destroyed my Georgie after a dental and he died from their failure to apply the right bandages and he developed necrosis in his his tail. They also let my Fiona, my greyhound leave with an IV still in her leg. They are both now dead. Shame on your Vet techs! And you for hiring them. Darcy almost died as well. I deleted an earlier review. Thought I was alone in my changing views of MVH. Then read some negative/honest takes of others. Reposting, of course it may not be the masterpiece from yesterday. I was one of Dr. Clive's first patients. Among first dozen? He had just been open a few days, the place was empty except for me him and my pet. He gave me a tour like a proud kid in a candy shop of entire building. It was very endearing.... Don't know how many people I have encouraged to switch to his clinic over the years. But something has changed in the past several years. No longer do you get a long detailed call from him letting you know your pet is ready for pickup and how everything went. You get a call from a receptionist. Questions you need answered are relayed to him while you are on hold. Receptionist comes back and passes info on to you. More questions or worries about details lost in translation? Shush..... Don't be persistent or rude. You now have to basically argue with a perturbed receptionist to speak with a Vet. Prove your need/desire. MVH has switched their business model from personalized Vet/pet owner communication to non vet/receptionist/electronic communication in order to free up Vet's time to see more patients and avoid interacting with pet owners. Time is money after all. Everything is impersonal. In the office paying and want to see the bill? 'We'll email it to you'. An estimate for a procedure? 'Check your email'. Want to talk to a Vet? 'Check your email'. Kidding with last example but you get the point.... About 8 months ago I am picking up pet and asking questions about care provided by a Dr. Lang. Receptionist looks down the hall at the Dr. Lang. I look at Dr. Lang. The Dr. Lang sees us looking at her. Does she walk 12 feet to introduce herself, come talk to me, answer questions? Of course not. 'Check you email'...... maybe it was because she gave my 19 year old indoor cat a rabies vax without asking me or she's just shy. Definitely not rude, right? don't know..... Just an extra $80 on bill... shush. I also wonder if this unnecessary vaccine is contributing to my lovely cat's ongoing health issues. But again, shush....The Dr. Lang had a legitimate reason for doing what she did. $80. And of course righteous indignation that how dare this owner of an elderly indoor cat take her/The Dr. Lang's health for granted.... or some such nonsense......8 years she's been a patient here and the first chance you as a new vet get, you decide to jab her without owner permission..... I was recently told I was rude to a receptionist after I said, "I know it's difficult to talk to Dr. Clive these days but if you could please have him call me". This semi snarky comment (not rude) was due to a call not being returned a month prior and years of receptionist controlled communications. MVH has changed. His receptionists/keepers of the gate are quite frankly rude and argumentative. Such a huge change from the business I first went to 8 (?)years ago... I still have a sick pet so I may have to seek an alternative Vet after this review and that worries me.... starting over with her care. But I think it's time to go somewhere else. Edit: I always thought of MVH as a boutique vet where you paid a bit more but in return you got extra special care from a sincere aw shucks Mayberry RFD Andy Taylor type vet. No longer the case. And for Dr. Clive apologists who say he doesn't know how these changes are troubling..... I have had three conversations with him in the past year about these changes. And he has been dismissive in his responses. His last ho hum response this past week is what prompted this review. Prices are still a bit higher though..... He is still pretty much the same in the exam room but so much interaction/communication between pet owners and Vets takes place outside the exam room. In this, he has made a 167 (?)degree change..... Que the paid propagandist, "our prices are comparable to other inner loop vets.", without addressing the much more important non-monetary issues. 3 2 1....., BTW, Dr Clive/Andy Taylor didn't refund $80 when I said this was unacceptable behavior by The Dr. Lang..... make of that what you will. 2 months prior to The Dr. Lang's overreach he had seen same pet but didn't feel the need to jab without permission.... hmmmm. Or on every occasion in the previous 8 years..... Sorry, i can see my review has somewhat degenerated into anti rabies vaccine territory. Not the point I wanted to make. Three times the price of I10 large care facility and they have to send out for labs. Still looking for permanent care instead of going the emergency route for simple procedures as I've been doing. When every review on Yelp is a 5 star, it's gotta be FREAKING GREAT. And, it was. :) For the past couple of years, I have been bouncing around visiting 3-4 different vets and not being genuinely happy with any of them. Most of them were just okaaaay, as in they were fine but I never felt like the vet truly cared or spent the time to explain things to me. I also felt like they were always trying to get me to buy some kind of product or adding random tests to the bill. And when I said "no thanks", one receptionist even gave me a dirty look as if I was purposely harming my pup for not giving her a shot that was "optional". You did say it was optional, right? You know what optional means, right? UGH, so rude! Dr. Richard Clive is a great man. He truly cares about animals and getting to the bottom of things. Zooey has had recurring skin allergies since she was about a year old. This is the third vet I have taken her to for the issue and he is the first one to explain to me all the potential allergies in detail. Dr. Clive did no even TOUCH my dog until he spent about 30-45 minutes explaining to me the symptoms of food vs. environmental vs. flea allergies. I learned A LOT. After talking, he did thoroughly examined Zooey. He even found her microchip which had migrated a bit since it was injected. Really creepy if you ever felt it before. The office visit, medicine, and other services are reasonably priced. You can email them for a list of services and pricing since it's not on their website. I felt like the visit was worth every dollar and not once did Dr. Clive try to sell me medicine or run a test that Zooey did not need. Another nice touch is that there isn't really a waiting area. You are immediately escorted into a room to wait with your furry friend. The facility was clean and full of bright paintings of animals on the wall. The exam tables had a little grippy mat over the cold metal. The only downside is the parking, typical Midtown/Montrose. There are literally 3 spots in front and a huge sign/pole blocking one of the spots. But forget the awful parking, this is hands down the best vet in Houston! read more

Dr. Clive and his staff are EXCEPTIONAL! It is a good drive from Sugar Land but the level of care that he extends to my fur babies is WORTH IT! For a while I have been in search of a vet that I can permanently stay and be satisfied with. Let me point out what sets them apart from other clinics: 1. All of the staff were welcoming and friendly..they always check in after a visit. 2. No pushy selling scheme typical of vet clinics that I have been to...they never push any products or services that are not needed or recommended. 3. Dr. Clive is knowledgeable and his calm demeanor showcases his expertise In all of my visits, I never had to wait. I've always been escorted to the examination room upon check in. I like that they seem to space out appointments and I never had a rushed visit. The exam room is VERY CLEAN and organized compared to other clinics where the atmosphere was not inviting. I've frequented a lot of vet hospitals in my area and nothing is comparable to the level of care and attention my pets receive here. One of my dogs is very anxious and scared but Dr. Clive made sure that he familiarizes himself before proceeding with the exam and vaccines. In my previous vet, the doctor walked in, went right into administering the vaccines without making any effort to calm my scared dog. Of course, my dog was anxious that a stranger is holding him down so he snarled at her. They muzzled him and forcefully pinned him down the exam table while giving him shots...I WAS MORTIFIED!!! BUT NOT in this clinic, Dr. Clive and his staff were very helpful and really made the effort to make everything a smooth process. He made sure to answer all of my questions and concerns before ending the appointment. I followed the Yelp reviews to Midtown Vet Hospital, and I'm so glad I did. Last Friday, my nearly 20 pound cat, Pudge, was feeling sick after having eaten a good part of a plastic bag. I called in first thing in the morning (as a new patient, new to the area), and they were able to make a 10:30 AM appointment for me. The new patient paperwork on the web site was super easy, and when we arrived, they took us right in to the exam room. Pudge got comfy right away. The facilities are really nice inside; it's very clean and modern, while not feeling like a sterile and unfriendly hospital. Side note: as a fellow Montrosian with an older house, I really enjoyed hearing from Dr. Clive that the office is located in a renovated old 1930's Montrose house. They took great care of Pudge, gave me several care options, and even estimated the prices in the system to help me decide. In the end, I went with the more conservative option at first, and decided to come back later for X-rays - and again, they fit us in. Dr. Clive was great with Pudge, and so was the whole team. After the X-rays, Dr. Clive spent time with me to show me his X-rays, and I came away feeling very reassured. In all, I spent less than I would have expected for the treatment we received. It was great that he also gave me advice while there about nutrition, and we have since changed the diet for both of our cats to canned food based on his advice. The real kicker came a few days later, though, when I filed for reimbursement from my pet insurance. Since I had never dealt with the process before, I expected it to be a pain. I brought the claim form to MVH on the way home from work, and Emily offered to not only fill out the necessary pieces and fax it in for me, but also to keep a blank copy on file and submit it for future claims for me, too! I truly didn't expect that. The very next morning I got a confirmation from the pet insurance that the claim was filed, and with Pudge feeling better, I was able to put the whole thing behind me. We will miss Midtown! We just moved back to Florida, but they've taken care of our Goldendoodle since he was a small puppy. Our guy was sick when we first got him and had GI sensitivities. They got him back on track, started him on a diet that solved his tummy issues and were quick to answer calls and questions. The techs are wonderful!! For those that are curious about my lil D's potty issue, please read on :) After taking medication that didn't do much, Dr. Clive suggested more fiber in his diet. Apparently, the grain-free food that I was feeding Dodger was extremely low in fiber causing his stools to be soft. We added Metamucil to his food and saw an instant change. I wasn't going to write a review, but decided to. We brought our elderly cat in because I suspected he had diabetes. He did, and we started to care for it with insulin shots. However, he died only a couple weeks later because the doctor completely missed the fact that he was fatally anemic on his blood work. We had started the insulin and he seemed to be responding because his blood sugar looked decent. But then he went downhill very quickly. We brought him back in and another doctor took more blood work and said he was very anemic. We brought him home and were told to "bring him back next week if he isn't doing better." The next morning, he was near death. My husband brought him in and he died at the office. There's no reason that the anemia shouldn't have been noticed with the initial bloodwork. I'm still devastated and will never take another pet of mine there again. read more

I was so impressed at how the doctor has two assistant technicians during the visit. I had such a great experience today with Dr. Clive. He was very personable, super nice and friendly and most importantly (to me), he made me feel comfortable. One thing I really liked about him is that he was HONEST. At first he thought my dog may have an ear infection so he swabbed his ears and came back after examining the specimen and said "false alarm". It meant a lot that he was honest about it. The vet tech assistants were very friendly and handled my 82 lb dog with ease. Even the vets assistants were honest about which shots my dog really needed and which ones he didn't. She used to be so afraid of our old vet that she wouldn't walk in on her own. Now she bounds in and wags her tail upon seeing the vet techs who dote on her. Everyone here works well together to create a welcoming environment for pets and their families. Dr. Clive is a nice guy, but he completely missed my puppy's heart murmur, for which there is no excuse. My review has to be based on the competence of the veterinarians and the clinical staff, and therefore I can only give 1 star. We owe so much to another veterinary practice for saving our puppy's life, I'm very disappointed with midtown, they should not use the word "hospital" in their name. read more
