When it comes to a quality vet, I'm fairly sure Dr. Oeben and her team are right up there with some of the best. The Cat Doctor is a fitting, yet simple name for one of the highest rated veterinarians in the entire city. They do a good job and provide good care for the felines who need it most. They're located in Montrose, and for much of the pandemic, did not allow for folks to come in. Animals were strictly drop off only and this was only in practice until very recently. They were extremely diligent for every visit and still continue to be extremely good about appointment reminders and constant communication. I also believe it takes a certain cadence to be able to provide a thorough examination for any animal, and Dr. O definitely has this ability to work with them all. She has excellent bedside manner, is knowledgeable and very professional. Then there's the bill. It ultimately depends on the procedures done, they don't tend to run cheap even with insurance. If your cat has actual issues like IBD i recommend you take them to an actual Vet. my cat was throwing up consistently for a year and all dr oeben gave my cat was Cerenia which is a nausea suppressant. Instead of recommending me elsewhere her illness got suppressed for a year until it got worse;almost took her to an emergency vet. Im upset because they couldve told me they did not have the proper tools to help my cat. If your cat has an actual illness go elsewhere. Fortunately i went to Montrose Vet clinic and with a few blood tests they were able to put her on proper medication. read more

I had tried out a couple different vets for my two cats and ended up disappointed for various reasons. But I'm so glad I tried the Cat Doctor for my two kitties! The best thing about this vet office is that it's only for cats. At other vets, my boys would get so anxious with the dogs around, so it's nice that that isn't a factor here. They're also timely and I never have to wait long for the appointment. The staff is great--they love cats and are passionate about helping them. They also don't guilt you or pressure you to spend money on unnecessary procedures or tests, but they still provide excellent recommendations and care. I moved to Texas back in 2019 and fortunately stumbled across The Cat Doctor when I was looking for a new vet for my cat Jaguar. Came here because, as a first time cat owner, I wasn't sure why my cat was so much more vocal after a weekend during which family visited. I had no idea what to make of her extra expressive vocals and needy attention and, of course after consulting Dr. Google, I had more fears and concerns. After reading a few reviews, it became obvious that the consistently highly-rated Cat Doctor was going to be the place I took Cassie. I called in, made the next available appointment and rushed over there with my kitty. The building itself in totally unassuming in the Montrose area. However, upon entering, I realized that it's almost a catopia with giant cat tree houses (like a literal tree house) and beautiful cats just living their best lives. After a short wait, I went in to see the vet but was greeted by one of the nurses who weighed my cat and offered up advice for food and toys. Then the vet came in and patiently listened to my concerns and kindly addressed them one by one. She even allowed my kitty to choose a stuffed toy to keep. She advised me to call anytime I had any other concerns. It is evident that they all care about cats (which was gleaned by the beautiful, brown tabby that was laying sleepily across the checkout counter) and I was even more stoked when the vet showed me pics of her cat which looked very much like mine. Dr. Oeben, Paul, and Eileen were super welcoming, warm, and friendly, keeping me posted throughout my kitty's appointment! Even more importantly I could tell that they were really sweet to my cat because he was so much calmer on the car ride home compared to the ride there. Dr. O is amazing! I found The Cat Doctor by driving by when we first moved to Houston and I am soooo glad I did. She is definitely our favorite vet we've ever had. Our cat actually doesn't mind going here. Dr. O's staff is also fantastic, particularly Susie, who is particularly knowledgeable about cats. As a unit, they treat our cat like their own; are so sweet with him, spend extra time with him, have never suggested an unreasonable or wrong medical procedure, always get to know the whole situation before making decisions, and are all around nice people. Simply the best vet, ever. Dr. Oben has been our vet for three of our cat fur babies. She helped us take two over the rainbow bridge with great help and compassion. Our girl after a long 20 year life and our boy after an unexpected lung ailment that could not be cured. RIP Sable, 2002-2019. Her life with us ran out overnight. They say you know when it's time to let go a beloved pet; and it was true. It was time. I called Dr Oeben's office in tears. Susy, her tech, was the calm, helping me get the words out that needed to be said. When I arrived with Sable, things were ready. Dr Oeben was wonderfully soothing with Sable (and me), taking immense care with us. She eased Sable into a deep comfortable sleep before administering that final injection. Dr Oeben has been Sable and Izzy's vet for many years. She and her team truly care about the cats they administer. Sable was an unusual case. For her last years, she was hyperthyroid; but she was also allergic to the thyroid medicine and had to live without it. What once was a very fat bossy cat, scarfing down any food in sight, she became a shadow of her former self. She didn't let that stop her from being bossy and energetic right up until the morning of her passing. I didn't realize how much noise and attention Sable contributed to my home until her disappearance. She was the queen of the house and always made her presence known to everyone in her loud voice and was never shy about demanding attention. Izzy, her younger adopted brother, is the exact opposite. Now, home has become too quiet. I miss her terribly. I'm very grateful for Dr Oeben and her team. Through their skills and knowledge, they made it possible for Sable to have a quality, long life; and when the inevitable time arrived, they made it possible for her to pass sweetly into the light. read more

Updating my review to let you all know this place is still the best! My kitten started showing signs of illness on Thursday. I thought it was just an eye infection, but noticed after speaking to Eileen and sending her a picture of his eye, that he may have a systemic infection. He had stopped meowing, which is NOT like him, and he wasn't playing. They were able to accomodate me that evening at 4pm on Friday before I went out of town for a day trip on Saturday. Dr. O said that he just had a URI and got an antibiotic shot, benadryl, and eye drops. The benadryl really helped him that night, and on Sunday he was starting to meow and play a bit more. Their perfect 5-star rating is no joke - these are absolutely the kindest, most knowledgeable veterinarians I've ever seen. We had adopted our first two cats (as first-time owners, no less) and during our first check-up, they walked us through *everything*, answered our questions thoroughly, and were so patient and gentle with our cats. Any problem, big or small, is handled with an absurd amount of care. An example of them going above and beyond was when my girlfriend found a two-week old kitten abandoned in the road. We called the Cat Doctor and they recommended a specific animal hospital that gave us the care we needed. As we fostered the little guy, the Cat Doctor helped with everything - answering questions about how to care for him best, specific formula to buy, do's and dont's, etc., and they even requested\transferred all the information about the little guy from the hospital so they knew all of his conditions before we even set foot inside their office. It's rare you come across a business that has genuinely fantastic people with good hearts, but The Cat Doctor is one of them. If you own a cat and live in the loop, there's just no other choice. Dr. Oeben has been my vet for years. She has always been excellent. I finally had to put my cat down and remember my last experience at my previous vet as being cold and unfeeling so was dreading this. She was the most caring and gentle person when it came time. It was one of the most heart breaking thing to have done, but she made the transition so peaceful and loving for my Julius! She was incredible. So glad I held him until the very end. I agree with Gaby D. If you need basic care for your cat, Dr. Oeben's your vet. She seems sincere, intelligent, and concerned for your cat. She can take care of basic things, like the check up, annual shots, and diagnosing worms and things of that nature. On the other hand, if your cat is suddenly ill and you need a thorough assessment, she may not be the right doctor for you, unless you have beaucoup $$$$ to spend. Last year, my dear one suddenly developed shortness of breath. I decided Dr. Oeben was going to be her regular vet, I trusted her, I liked her demeanor, so naturally, I went to Dr. Oeben to figure out what was wrong. Dr. Oeben ran an x-ray and informed me I had to take her immediately to Gulf Coast Animal Clinic because her lungs were collapsing. I paid around $123 for the exam and x-rays and rushed to Gulf Coast. That's where it went seriously wrong. But I also hold Dr. Oeben responsible because she referred me. Gulf Coast is an emergency clinic. It's supposed to be the top of the line of vet clinics in Houston and it's also very expensive. Dr. Oeben doesn't appear to be aware of reality. Most pet owners love their animal companions dearly and would be willing to do most anything to try to take care of them, keep them alive, if that was an option. In my cat's case, that was not an option. She was dying and Dr. Oeben should have recognized that (I will address that in the next paragraph) and given me realistic options instead of sending me off to the Vampire Vet Clinic. Instead, I trusted Dr. Oeben and was basically held hostage by Gulf Coast Animal Clinic for several hours while the advised me the procedures my cat would need to sustain, but not save her life, and the $1K+ it would cost me. I called my boyfriend and we finally decided, if our cat was going to die, we would not put her through tests and prodding/probing, and needles. This was an inevitable, and we wanted her to be comfortable and loved, but there was no further need for the b-s Gulf Coast was touting. I demanded my cat, paid Gulf Coast about $500 for "oxygen care" and several hours worth of grief and bullshit, and left. Meanwhile, my boyfriend and I decided to take our gurl to another local vet, just to see. Montrose Vet Clinic ended up giving us an honest answer. She was doomed, but they were able to relieve her discomfort for a third of what Gulf Coast was demanding. They were able to relieve her discomfort where my vet COULD NOT. Why not? I asked my vet and she said she sent me to Gulf Coast because she claimed was not comfortable performing the procedure. Meanwhile, a competitor vet less a than a mile away is capable, and she sends me to Gulf Effing Vampire Coast to eat my lunch when my cat was going to die anyway. So this was a bitter experience, thanks to Dr. Oeben's cavalier obliviousness. My cat is dead and gone. That's not her fault, but her lack of judgement and her failure to recognize the reality of people's financial limitations in relation to the prognosis of their pets are. How about this in black and white: people want to know what they have to pay, because in the end, it's all about the Benjamins, isn't it? At least, that's the impression The Cat Doctor and Gulf Coast have made on me. No need to front. Oh, and my cat died Nov 2009, thanks to Montrose Vet Clinic, she was comfortable and passed away a month later, much loved and still missed. read more

When you have a sick pet, it's just like having a sick child, so all sorts of dire things run through your mind. It's not just the sick pet that needs comforting, it's the distraught owner too. When my cat became ill, Dr. Oeben saw her right away (literally 5 mins after I called, as I live just 4 blocks away). This was our first visit and the staff could not possibly have been kinder or more understanding, for both me and the cat. Very professional, yet very low key and gentle. We couldn't have had a better experience. I have zero hesitation in giving 5 stars. I'd give 10 if I could. The sweetest staff I have ever met at a veterinarian and very very humane with their treatment (they don't perform declawing procedures) The prices are very fair based on what the market demands, if anything they are better! A regular exam is in the $30's... but a blood panel is in the $300's, so be sure to know ahead of time what you are asking for when you come in for your visit. When I came in my cat had a problem, and they were able to diagnose it right away. IN addition to that, my cat didn't even put up a fight (she is very feisty) because their kind energy and lack of dogs made her feel so comfortable. I STRONGLY recommend. ONE downside: For urinary/fecal samples they don't use traditional methods (via syringe to bladder or fecal loop) you have to bring the samples in from a litter box, the "all natural way" because they are EXTREMELY humane. read more
