I've lived in Texas off-and-on for a total of 11 years. During this time I've literally eaten at a minimum of 100 Texas BBQ restaurants. My wife and I would spend our weekends traveling the State hitting as many of the Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQs that we could. One Saturday a few years ago we ate at 5 different Texas BBQ restaurants - I'm not kidding. And I have never once during this time had a meal I didn't enjoy - until tonight. I'm not going to jump off the deep end and say the food was bad, it wasn't. Except for my iced tea which was terrible. I spent a year in New Jersey where they serve tea as dark as coffee with a taste that makes your head snap back. This tea was just like that. Texas tea is a light brown color, not black. Needless to say, after one sip I didn't finish it. The BBQ beans are definitely not Texas style. They were watery and sweet, and not very appetizing in my opinion. Definitely different than any other bbq beans you'll find in Texas where pinto beans are typically served with BBQ. The green beans were under cooked and tough. The corn needed a truck load of salt and pepper. Now to the meat. My brisket, sausage, ribs, and pulled pork were all OK, not horrible, but nothing to get excited about either. The star of the show was the banana pudding which was the only item we ordered that could potentially motivate me to return, which I probably won't do. I assume the pudding was homemade and it was definitely tasty. You've probably seen the pictures of the facility. It's basically a small store front where you walk inside and the ordering counter is immediately inside the door just one step away. There is no seating inside. The outdoor patio on the front of the building has 4 or 5 rickety tables with a couple of "indoor tvs" that are hung on the roof supports. Because they are indoor and not outdoor TVs, unless it's pitch dark outside the screens will be washed out and you won't be able to see anything. There are two tables on the patio on the backside of the building and we initially attempted to use them so we could sit in the shade and not in the blast of the setting sun that covered the front of the building. Unfortunately, these two tables and their chairs had not been cleaned for a millennia and were covered with a bunch of sticky crap that had blown off the nearby trees and parking lot. I'm going to be extremely generous and award a score of three because the meat is disappointingly average but not terrible, and because it hurts me to disparage a small family business. But this very easily could have been a 2 star score. And considering there are a boat load of great BBQ options within 10 miles, I can see no reason to visit here again in the future. read more

I try very hard to at least find something positive when visiting independently owned establishments but it's impossible here. The ribs and brisket are total mush with no seasoning. They must be days old. The macaroni is curdled. The mashed potatoes are an over seasoned garlicky mess. The green beans are not good. The menu prices are incorrect. They were very friendly but very confused on pretty much everything. $75 and we are feeding it to the dogs, hopefully they enjoy it. read more

On today's adventure I visited "Mighty Oak BBQ", to be honest it's a small place with limited seating outside. But what it lacks in space it makes up in flavor. But first going back to the place, as you enter to the place you are warmly welcomed. You select from the menu, I choose a pulled pork sandwich with mac and cheese and a soda. They have a variety of meat options. Once you place your order you either wait or set outside and they kindly bring your meal to you. So the sandwich was phenomenal, the sandwich comes with the bbq sauce and some sliced pickles, but meat was great the sauce took it to another level. This place is a wonderful option for barbecue I highly recommend this place. read more

Picked up BBQ here for the first time this evening. Growing up in the Luling/Lockhart area, I am picky with my BBQ and Mighty Oak disappoint. Brisket was extremely moist with a really nice smoke ring, sausage and chicken both had extremely good flavor, didn't even need the BBQ sauce. We've driven by Mighty Oak a million times over the past year, and hubs decided that today was going to be rib day! We went to try them out, and are so glad we did! Hubs got a half rack of baby back ribs that were fall-off-the-bone amazing! the drug had just the right amount of saltiness and the homemade barbecue sauce was a perfect foil for the salt of the ribs. He's still talking about them hours after we ate there! I had the one meat plate with brisket (moist and super flavorful) and homemade Mac n cheese and baked beans. I am tremendously happy that I have leftovers to take to lunch tomorrow! Mighty Oak is conveniently located next to Black Clover bar, so you can get your drink on AND have amazing barbecue at the same time! The staff/owners were super friendly and service was awesome! Contacted MOBBQ, explained his issue, ordered was pulled up. The male manager is yelling that's not what you ordered, as he is reading his order off the door dash screen. After that idiot finished yelling, the female manager (sorry did not catch your name) got on the telephone and was able to see the order. First thing i have to say this hurts. I wanted this to work because they are so nice. But this is a place to buy food, and they are not ready to do that here. The sides are okay, but the meat is either dry and bland(pulled pork) or very overcooked (possibly a reheated leftover), and the sausage, that gave us the food poisoning. The service was impeccable and the wait time was minimal which was great. I will support small business owners however improvements IMO needs to be made. I ordered chicken and moist/fatty brisket with coleslaw and mac & cheese. The slaw was wonderful with just the right amount of vinegar however mac & cheese had a weird taste to it that I just couldn't overcome. The chicken was a bit dry and the brisket was far from being on the moist side. I will continue to get my BBQ elsewhere. Three stars for the service and good slaw. read more

6-19-2024 My husband and I each ordered a sampler plate. The sliced brisket was very tender and flavorful. The 2 ribs were fall off the bone delicious. Sausage link and Turkey were so good. Mac and cheese was very creamy and good. Mustard potato salad was sweet and good. (personally I prefer dill flavor over sweet) I also ordered jalapeños but got pickles instead. My husband's order was mixed up. My husband got sliced beef instead of chopped beef. He ordered pulled pork and got Turkey breast instead. The sausage link and ribs were correct and so delicious. The coleslaw was very good. Also, pickles were given instead of jalapeños. The bbq was excellent and so delicious. . The food we got was very good. Just a heads-up CHECK your order before you leave. We were so excited for Texas barbecue, talking about it for weeks. Based on the 4 star review we went to mighty oak. We ordered the variety pack, sausage, brisket and pulled pork, Mac and cheese, potato salad and baked beans, as well as 1 lb of smoked turkey. The sides were decent, but not great. The proteins were terrible. Dry, too salty, too smoky, almost like they cooked it a few days earlier and then reheated it in a mixture of liquid smoke and water. The parking situation is also a mess. We drive a large car and it was very difficult to get out of the parking lot. Save your money, go to Smokey mos or Rudy's. read more

Where do I start. This place was amazing with great food and the friendliest staff there. When you park you get that good ol smell of oak wood burning away that just lets you know you're going to be in for a treat and man what a treat it was. Let's start off with the plate I ordered(not pictured) but it was the burnt end plate with bbq baked beans and corn and man that plate was gone in minutes. So I had to get the pork ribs which was by far the best taste and bite you can get. I just had the best street tacos I've ever had at this establishment. It's a little hole in the wall place, with the best Texas bbq in town. By far surpasses any other bbq I've had in NB. Got the beef and the pineapple jalapeño sausage and brisket. Sides were Mac n cheese, baked beans, and potato salad. Didn't really care for the beef sausage, it was over smoked. The pineapple jalapeño was ok. The Mac n cheese was mostly dry noodles with barely any cheese and the baked beans were not really baked at all, just Bush's beans mixed with tomatoes and maybe a little ketchup and brown sugar. The best thing there was the mustard potato salad. I probably won't go back there, it's not really my taste.
