Sunday, 5-31-2026: We visited Canyon Lake to see my husband's parents former lake house and where my mother-in-law lovingly babysat my daughter as a toddler. Lots of family memories here. Our daughter found this BBQ and wanted to try it out. We drove up & it's not fancy but the smell of delicious BBQ hit us as we got out of the car so we knew it was promising! We pored over the menu and I decided on a sausage sandwich with Mac 'n Cheese. You order at the counter and food is brought out. The rustic interior was clean and we easily found a table. It wasn't too long before we all received our meals. We all agreed this was great BBQ! My sausage had a bit of heat but it was tasty! The Mac 'n Cheese was rich & savory. We loved the BBQ sauce. Our grandson claimed his chicken strips & fries were the best he ever had & this kid does not lie! Everything was so good! As we were leaving I spoke to one of the owners to let him know we really enjoyed the BBQ & asked if I could take a photo. He said Tracy was in the back & I asked if she could also pose for a snapshot. They sweetly obliged me. I told him we were from CA but hubby's parents used to live in Canyon Lake. Larry welcomed us as we arrived. The interior of the restaurant was rustic and fitting for a BBQ restaurant, not fancy but clean with TV's for guests. Quite a number of regulars there who were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu as well. We spoke with Larry about the menu options and queried him as to his favorites and wound up with a delicious meal consisting of a little bit of everything, We shared a combo plate with brisket, burnt ends and sausage with 2 sides; pea salad and potato salad. Staying in the Canyon Lake area, we wanted to have some authentic barbecue before we leave tomorrow. If you're like us, you will really enjoy this spot. Picked this place last weekend based on all the great reviews and I was really surprised. Had to come back and dig deeper to confirm what I thought I saw here, but our experience was nothing like what has been recently described. Firstly, the good. Everyone working in the restaurant was super friendly. Don't mind at all giving them my food money. Portion sizes were definitely large. So that's another good one. And, the food isn't bad... but it was VERY average. I had the two meat plate, got a double helping of sliced brisket. It looked nothing like any of the 5* pictures on yelp. No bark. No smoke ring. In fact, it looked and felt much more like it was roasted than smoked. It tasted fine, not terrible, but not great. One friend ordered a chopped beef sandwich. The beef wasn't chopped, it was shredded. Not a huge deal but again, do they smoke the meat here? Or do they roast it? Other friend got ribs and brisket and said the ribs were much better. Didn't really touch the brisket more than a couple of bites. Potato salad was good, best of everything I had. Beans were "out of the can" tasting. Fine. Okra seemed to be a favorite of the others, but one of my friends who ate the okra, onion rings, and fries commented they tasted like they all came out of the same oil. Sausages didn't look like anything special, but I didn't have one. Their website shows a picture of fountain drinks that aren't there anymore, I guess. The sum it up quote was, "It's like, not bad for lake food". But I wouldn't come close to giving it 5 stars. Not in South Texas, for sure! read more

Sometimes, restaurants that were great at one time, peak out. Quality goes down and you're disappointed as time goes on. NOT HERE!! We've been coming to Bare Bull for over 6 years now and the food is still fantastic. The menu has grown a little to include fried catfish, but our go to meals include brisket, pork ribs and turkey. The sides are amazing as well. We usually get the mac and cheese, sausage and peppers and pea salad. Really can't go wrong with anything.
