The sushi was impressive. When I was handed my to go boxes of sushi rolls I was pleasantly surprised that it had weight meaning that I got some "beefy" sushi to enjoy. Am really glad I gave the place a shot. I will continue to order when in need of sushi! It appears to be mostly to go now, although it looked like there was s tourist family sitting inside, and when it was time to pay chef told me to come in. I recommend this place! I also liked the massive amount of roll options they have created.

    Perfect box of yummy!

Absolutely delicious! I had a day of disappointing businesses and mediocre restaurants and then I came across this simple lovely Sushi shop, late on a Sunday evening. I got all this deliciousness for $20 plus tip. Fair prices, freshly made by a family business. Perfect!

I definitely recommend this sushi place. The service was amazing and they were very nice. Got the island roll and best one I've had. Highly recommend this place.

Solid, reasonably priced sushi with a large (if hard to find online) menu. Stars allocated taking into consideration the location/alternatives. Not accounting for Chicago, LA, NY, or SF sushi experiences - take a breath, enjoy the island air and the chill vibe, and scale expectations accordingly. We don't have traffic or blaring sirens or Michelin stars - look for solid options with friendly service. Anticipate a bit of a wait - it's a small spot and sushi is not fast. Chillax - it's Hawaii ;) Had spicy scallop & avocado futomaki and a sunshine roll - rice was not gummy or overly sweet (two personal peeves), but be warned there is quite a bit of it. If you are looking for sleek, Manhattan basement style rolls - these are not they. These rolls are filling, feature very fresh fish, and are made for the middle segment, spice wise. If you want truly spicy fish, you'll have to ask for it. Or slather wasabi on it. Ate with a group in which everyone was happy. I overheard that the Miso is bomb. Definitely will be trying more now that I have more menu saved. Attaching a bunch of pics in attempt to capture it.

Spicy tuna bowl with tempura on top and a island roll

Wow!! This place keeps getting better and better. I can confidently say that this is the best sushi restaurant on the Bigisland. I've been coming here for years and it's so nice to eat at a place where the food is consistent in regard to taste. Today I ordered the spicy tuna bowl and added tempura on top. Bruhhhhhh. Was soooo ono! Not only was it the best sushi bowl that I've ever had but for 11.99$ you can't beat that price. The amount you get for that price was a great deal.

Service was good -sushi was ok. Nothing bad but it wasn't up to our expectations. Generous portions and reasonably priced.

Phenomenal. Yes, you have to make reservations and they may take a while but it is 100% worth it…read more You can also order takeout out but it has to be in advance. I cannot recommend this place enough. The ambiance and experience are something to feel in person and watching the dishes being prepared with such precision was fascinating. The sushi is so fresh and just melts in your mouth. What a gem, truly thankful for being able to dine here. I also ordered Unagi but I ate it before I could snap a photo! Lol, it was yummy!

We made the trek (about a 2-hour drive) to try dinner here only to be met with a paper sign posted…read moreon the door that said reservations are booked until the end of the year! Wait, what? The worker was nice about it, but because they don't have a website, how were we supposed to know? We also usually try to make reservations ahead of time, but because there was no website, we figure it's a first come, first serve kind of spot. That's our bad for making that assumption, but now that I'm reading other Yelp reviews, this seems to be a years-old customer service issue. But it makes sense, since exclusivity seems to be part of the business plan (i.e. small/limited seating, reservations only). Must be working for them. Didn't work out for us though, at least in the moment. So even though we didn't try the food (I'm sure it's likely amazing), it sucked to make the drive out here. Pro tip: call first --months ahead before you plan to go here and make a reservation! After just reading some of the reviews, I learned you can do take out but must order ahead of time. Not sure how much more ahead of time. So calling would also be a good idea here. Honestly, the amount of work to just get info, a reservation, and ultimately a meal here is starting to feel cumbersome. I'm not sure I'd want to try making the effort again. We did turn a lemon situation into lemonade and instead had dinner at Ken's House of Pancakes, and they never disappoint! Had we eaten at Takenoko, we would've missed out on Ken's oxtail stew, which was listed as part of the day's special menu items, and it was one of the best meals we've had in Hilo. So, it all worked out.

Can't believe this place would serve short ribs a FEW DAYS OLD!!!…read moreI asked for a replacement, and they couldn't, since it was all old. It was dry and had a hard crust. So happy to return to Seaside-to celebrate the holiday season with my dear friends in Hilo…read more The restaurant has bar seating, semi-private room seating, and 2+ tops for pairs, families, groups, and more! (I've attended speaker programs there, for example.) Tonight, we were down the few steps right past the restrooms, near the koi pond, and got to help sing happy birthday to someone during dinner! (FYI The staff really do sing well!) Chenoa's service was cheerful and bubbly, thank you so much! And she really tried to help me choose my entree ('cause the Hilo peeps all knew what they wanted, while the townie from Honolulu couldn't make up her mind amongst the many choices). We enjoyed calamari with their yummy sauce (with just a tad of a kick), escargot, salads, cocktails (some peeps), an array of entrees, and of course, desserts! Entrees included bacon wrapped scallops with pasta, shrimp with pasta, miso salmon, tekka maki and salad, and I was so happy with the furukake salmon that I finally chose! Some of us opted in for the $7 addition of soup (last night it was carrot ginger which I also would have loved, or salad (which I chose for the greens), and a warm bread with butter. Desserts included an affogato, mango lychee sorbet, sorbet trio (of mango lychee, raspberry, and pineapple), and a scoop of the kona mud pie ice cream. Everything was delicious and some had leftovers, perfect for lunch the next day! (And of course, Chenoa brought a clean cup of teriyaki sauce for that take out serving!) I also love that they keep a carafe of ice and water on tables with groups-so we could refill our glasses constantly. Oh, and mahalo to the owner who visited us, and helped sing happy birthday to our fellow guest. (Sorry, I didn't catch his name.) Mahalo Seaside, for yet another delightful evening and yummy meal, and Merry Christmas to you all!
