Walked in and was impressed with the interior. Has a very nice rustic theme to it. The lady behind the bar was nice and brought me a menu. Then after studying the menu for a while and her explaining how to order off of it, I realized it was so limited. Tacos, quesadilla, burrito, and torta. That's it no enchiladas, no tostadas, nothing else just a really lame basic menu. I apologized to the woman and told her there was nothing that I was interested in and left. Stopped in on a Thursday night for dinner. They run dinner specials during the week that are worth making the trip in. We started with guacamole and homemade fries chips. We liked both. My wife had carne asada soft shell tacos and I had the burrito dinner with carne asada and churriso. It was presented like a hand held burrito with a pan fry finish for a crust on the tortilla. We both had rice and beans. Both were good. The beans were a combo for refried and pinto and the rice had great flavor with a lot of lime and was hot and fluffy. Where do I begin? Welcoming atmosphere, clean restaurant, and attentive service. I'm not a margarita fan, but I thoroughly enjoy my strawberry margarita and would enjoy again! My fiancé ordered salsa and chips for an appetizer and we were both happily surprised with the fresh chips and tasty green salsa! After enjoying our appetizer we both ordered their three taco dinner special for taco Tuesday. My fiancé order steak tacos and I ordered a combination of chicken tinga, chorizo, and their house special campechano. Everything was amazing!!! My fiancé enjoys the spicier salsas and was offered a habenero red salsa. We sampled all three that was received and have nothing but good things to say about them all. Such a disappointment. Service was haphazard. Took a while to get servers attention for another beer. Then got brought two which was one over what I ordered. Then got charged for extra beer which I had sent back. Bill got adjusted but took extra time. Now the food. This is supposed to be a Mexican restaurant but they do not serve flour tortillas, only corn. Tacos and salsa were ok. But entrees lacked sophistication. Steak was under seasoned, paid $1 for cheese and no cheese. Torta bread was dry cold and not toasted as it should have been, with very light meat. The salsa only tasted of lime, refried beans were overcooked and over seasoned with all-spice I assume - all I could taste was clove, which was an odd flavor for refried beans. Guacamole had limited flavor. Items that went into the Garbage: - Torta bread 1/3 in garbage - not worth the calories since there wasn't enough meat. - Salsa - two plain steak tacos (missing cheese and seasoning) - 1/2 guacamole container All for the total of $80 for the meals listed below: 5 steak tacos Steak torta Steak burrito Chips and Salsa Side or guacamole. This place is a gem! Lorenzo and his family are amazingly welcoming and the food and margs are world class. Tampequena, tamales, tacos, the Philly, and the habenero salsas (pineapple and chipotle) were 10/10 dynamite. Get the consome for dipping. Fox lake strikes again. Bland food. Fajita Steak, chewy, and had an odd taste. Has the Iberia bowl. Was expecting a bowl, not soup...sigh. I was very excited to try this place. They have been a staple at the Kenosha Market on Saturdays. I was told they even have a little pop up inside Six Flags. I love a great underdog story. This place is a great addition to that area. The food is fresh and made with love, They have a bar area , and indoor and outdoor seating as well. I will say be patient on service due to it being family run and low on servers but it's worth the wait. This is what was ordered: Guacamole and Chips. The Chips were fresh and hot out the fryer. The Guacamole was well seasoned and chunky, which is my personal favorite.Tacos Al Pastor both chicken and Pork. They come with slices of Pineapple. The meats were both tender and juicy but found I favored the pork due to its flavoring. I also ordered regular Carne Asada as well. The Carne Asada was also tender and not dry. I also had a Mangonada Margarita and Watermelon Margarita. The Mango was definitely the Star! Definitely will be back: 9/10 read more

Very good Mexican food so far have only had the enchiladas and the tacos. There's a separate charge for chips and salsa which seems to be what most restaurants are doing now servers are very good and your personality. There are several seating areas, including an outside patio. read more

Don't expect to speak freely here without her listening in on conversations and butting in any area dining room and bar alike. I havnt a clue as to how this place can get such high reviews. The day we went in, we got hit like a ton of bricks with this overwhelming smell of sewage. It literally smelled like SEWAGE as soon as we opened the doors to this restaurant. We should have about faced out of the place but we went in and sat down. I had a torta and it was SUPER SALTY. I couldn't even finish it . I will say the waiter was very nice and very attentive. I am Mexican so I am reviewing the food with actual experience and background to do so. The food was awesome and this is coming from someone who grew up in Chicago. A lot of the places I've tried in Lake County have been mediocre and I had to save my cravings for tacos until I got back to Chicago. Not anymore, the Carne asada and Barbacoa tacos from this place rivals the ones I've had in Chicago. The meat has flavor, good quality and you are not getting grizzle or huge fat pieces that are hard to chew. I definitely recommend this place to anyone that is looking for great Taco spot. We heard about Mijo's Authentic Mexican Restaurant from a friend, they were very impressed with the food and drinks. We got our lunch to go and it was absolutely delicious! I was fortunate enough to meet the wonderful woman who makes their salsas and she gave me a sample of a new pineapple one to try - and warning to the wise, it will set you on fire! Knowing how time intensive it is to make authentic Mexican salsas, I have no problem paying extra for them! She is the real deal, and they were all very delicious, as were the carne asada tacos, guacamole and chips! The menu is very focused just as it should be. The decor is very pleasant and cozy. I look forward to going back and trying more of their offerings. This is our new favorite place in Fox Lake! read more
