I give an A-plus grade to Mike Boyolan! I asked him to fix a strap on my 1970's era Knoll Barcelona chair, a classic. He had a solution to the problem, and came to my house within a day or two to fix it on site. This is a beautiful chair, but not the easiest to fix. However, he was able to provide the exactly right strap, available only from Knoll, and advised me on how to extend the life of the other straps. Mike is a true craftsman with reverence for classic furniture, solid expertise and 100% attention to detail. Plus, a charming old-Berkeley guy. A treasure. 10 years ago or so he renewed my father's 1964 Eames Lounger, which I inherited. He remembered that particular chair! His prices are quite fair, his work is excellent. Mike is, to me, old Berkeley--the Berkeley that I moved here for many years ago and of which these days I only see small vestiges. He really went above and beyond to help me. He didn't need to do it. He usually does very high- end vintage pieces (with such artistry!), but went out of his way for me in this unusual situation that no one else could touch: My new-ish couch had started to hurt my hips, and I couldn't figure out exactly why. Mike came to my apartment, sat on the couch with me, and confirmed that I needed much harder foam. He then replaced the foam. On top of that, he was super fast and communicative--and meticulous. And again, didn't need to do any of it in the first place. Recently, a button popped off the couch. Who else would I call but Mike? Another weird conundrum: It had broken off at the clasp. Mike came back out to my apartment, figured out a way to replace the button--not an easy task, and within a few days, had sewed the new one on. Mike was recommended to me by Knoll. He was tasked with reupholstering a worn out 10 year old knoll womb chair (he's worked on 100+ of them in his career) for my aunt and he delivered. On the phone, Mike was very thorough about where/how much fabric was needed. After picking out/ordering/receiving the fabric, I set up a date for him to come by and pick up the chair + fabric. He drove to the city, with sample cushions to identify the right firmness for my aunt. Outlined in detail what he was going to do which included hand stitching the outer lining as they did in the 40s for this chair. Hauled the chair away. Sent over progress pictures along the way. 2 weeks later, brings back the womb chair that would be happily received at a furniture museum. Highly recommended. He is truly amazing at his craft. I had been looking for a skilled, mid-century upholsterer in the east bay for almost 15 years and didn't even know he existed.
