When I started calling around to Furniture business close to me some weeks ago, I didn't get very far. I had a Chippendale chair with a broken seat base that needed to be replaced, but wanted to keep the fabric. Most places weren't interested in fixing something 'so small'.. So, I got on Yelp and decided to use their AI Assistant to find someone who could help. The responses came faster than I could have anticipated. The first one was from Leo at Leo's Upholstery. This was a business I was already considering, being somewhat close after 2 in Oakland. Leo's reviews are what sold me, outside of how responsive Leo was to my inquiry. I dropped off the chair, had a great chat with Leo about the chair, what we had done with it and other topics. He said it would be ready by Monday or Tuesday. I receive a text early on Tuesday morning, letting me know the chair was ready. We arranged a time and I came to get the chair. It was as promised. Leo's Upholstery combines the knowledge and experience of two generations of upholsterers with attention to quality, detail and old school personal service. Leo, Sr managed the upholstery department for a high-end contract furniture manufacturer based in Oakland. After that company closed Leo started his own company and brought his son, Leo, Jr into this new business. We made a mistake in buying a Mitchell Gold sofa and specifying a down seat and back. We sunk into the sofa in a way that was uncomfortable. We sought out Leo's Upholstery to firm up the seat and back pillows. Leo came to our house with several different foam density samples and wraps. He spoke very knowledgeably about the pros and cons of each. Leo took our cushions back to his shop and 10 days later we have a firmer, more comfortable sofa. Since then we've sent him 8 Pottery Barn dining chairs that have "bottomed" (i.e. lost the firmness of their seat cushion). We hired Leo to reupholster our large sectional that was purchased new in 1984. The result is a perfect testimony as to why reupholstering can cost as much, if not more, than new, solid wood framed furniture. They did such a beautiful job. I've actually been lifting the seat cushions to show people how detailed the work is under the cushions and around the frame! The sectional was reupholstered very well by another company about 20 years ago and we're confident that this version will last just as long. Leo's was not our lowest quote, but I'm glad we went with them. I like that he is a second generation upholsterer and his father still works with him. Pick up and delivery was easy. He came over and looked at the fabric sample we had already chosen, to confirm it would work. And he brought foam samples that day so we could select the thickness and stiffness for the new cushions. He helped us understand a lot about our options, the process, and how to care for our "new" sectional. The job took slightly less than the estimated 5 weeks and he communicated with us as needed. I recommend Leo's upholstery. He did a great job on my 6 mid-century chairs. The price he quoted for the job was not the lowest that I received after getting estimates from various upholsterers, but when Leo explained what he was going to do, it made sense to me for the price that he quoted me. He's also open about not being the cheapest in town. Other upholsterers I communicated with, told me that they would take the cushions out and replace them with foam. Leo refurbished the original springs on each chair, then rebuilt the chair with the springs, which I'd imagine to be labor intensive. He also advised me to keep these springs, because they rarely make chairs with springs any more. People who visit comment on how comfortable the chairs are. The new material he used was fine but the cushions were uneven and the chairs actually have missing screws underneath on the seats and scratches on the paint. A screw used on the back had a sharp tip which we could feel when we leaned back on it. If you have furniture you care about, we don't recommend using this company. read more

I have a dining room set that belonged to my great aunt. She'd be about 100 if she were still alive. That tells you how old this set it. She and her husband bought it new when they were first married about a million years ago. Until I found Leo, the chairs were still original. They fabric was a hideous gold/yellow color, the cushions were flatter than flat, and the caning on the back was worn and coming apart on some of the chairs. Honestly, I thought this dining room set was the most old fashioned, ugly, heavy, outdated monstrosity that I had ever seen. I called Leo after a few heavy discussions with my husband. Neither of us could stand this set any longer. I was tinkering with the idea of trying to sell it.. but who would want such hideous things in their house? Enter Leo. On the phone I told him what I had and liked things that were "rich chocolate brown" and easy to keep clean. The next day, he promptly arrived at my house with a few books of sample fabric and he had exactly what I had in mind. He was quick to tell me all about the chairs, how they don't make them like this anymore and how if he were to sell them in his shop, they would sell for about $500 a piece after they were fixed. WHAT? Suddenly that old hideous stuff wasn't so bad. I picked out the fabric and Leo explained step by step what he would be doing to the chairs. He whisked the chairs away to do some magic. About two weeks later, I could not believe my eyes. How could these be the same chairs? Really?? They went from horridly outdated ugly rags to gorgeous and beautiful! The craftsman ship and care that went into the work Leo did was first class all the way. It's been a few months now. The chairs still look just as new as the day he finished working on them. I had this idea that I would reupholster four casual chair cushions on my own so I went to Leo's to find fabric. I needed something that would be durable for future kids (wear and tear) and still look nice -- he had just what I needed in a sturdy vinyl material. The fabric was cut and rolled up for me, I paid a fair price and off I went. Fast forward a few months later where I now realize that there's no way I can do this as a first-time furniture project. I don't have the tools and I'm out of time. I head back to Leo's with my four cushions + the fabric, and the older and younger Leo were fabulous! They gave me a quote for the labor and foam and they said the cushions would be ready by the end of the week....they were ready a day ahead of schedule and the results are great (see photo I added). A miracle worker. Leo is truly amazing. I found of about him through a leather repair person I found here on Yelp. I own a leather recliner and a matching leather reclining sofa that are about 12 years old. The set is in great shape except the arms of the recliner had just plain been loved to death. The leather first began to crack just a little, then some more, then tore along the top stitching. I could not replace it with anything similar and I didn't want to start over. Too much money. Based on photos the leather repair person said it had gone too far and that it really needed to be reupholstered and recommended Leo. Leo was so helpful via email and phone and as I was about to move out of my house for a month to paint and recarpet, that would be the best time to take the recliner to Leo. After looking at it he felt the best option would be to use a high end simulated leather and I agreed. The color match is amazing. If you didn't know it was "Naugahyde" you wouldn't believe it. The price was less than half the price of a new chair and I didn't need to be concerned about matching the sofa. I couldn't be happier. Upholsterers are not easy to find, much less outstanding ones. This chap is an artist. Do not hesitate to refresh your furniture and keep it out of the land fill. So happy!!! read more

The existing seat was uncomfortable, but I didn't want to get new chairs. Leo #2 provided excellent guidance on what he would do to improve the look and feel of the cushion. Also, he allowed me to get only one cushion (out of a total of 4) done to see how I liked the change. Not only is the seat cushion MUCH more comfortable, but it looks fantastic! We had Leo's redo a sectional couch and the results were better than expected. We had a custom made throw on it, that had seen better days. I'd also had a knee issue and I'd wanted the couch higher off the ground. Leo redid all of the cushions that automatically lent the couch to be higher and firmer and put new legs on it! Fast forward 5 years; and our couch still looks brand new! He also redid my Sister's couch and hers still looks brand new too. Leo is gifted and we will use his services again. read more

He has plenty of options at the store, but if you can't find what you want he has access to many different fabric companies (that are often hard to buy from as an individual).
