Best dive operator in Maui, hands-down. The experienced, knowledgeable guides are the best at showing you the good stuff while paying mind to reef preservation and marine life safety. I've been out with them several times over several years, and my experiences have been consistently positive. Andy (boat operator and amazing underwater photographer) has an impressive ability to remember names, Pauline is an absolute pro, and the other divemasters I've met (Warren, Sharon) are also great. If you need to rent equipment, they have high-quality stuff at very low rental prices. I just finished two days with the Mike Severns Diving crew and they provided the best scuba diving experience one could hope for. Prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable, they provided an outstanding concierge-level service on a small boat trip. The equipment was great. They paid close attention to details, such as making sure your mask does not fog before heading down and they knew all 12 divers by name before leaving the dock. Great safety and pre-dive briefings. The boss Pauline is an attentive and educated divemaster who will point out interesting animals and ocean features through the entire experience. Great two dives last Thursday with AJ (divemaster) and Andy (Captain). One of the best dives I've had. We were lucky in that there was only three divers (last minute cancellation) so the team really took great care of us (including cinnamon rolls and delicious fresh baked cookies). What really set these dives apart was that AJ spent over 10 minutes explaining what would happen on the dive and what unique marine life we would see. Beyond helping us be more informed and knowing what to expect, this was important on our 1st dive as one of the other two divers had some anxiety on the surface which AJ handled very well (she's also a paramedic). In each case AJ would look for unique things for us to see which made an extra special dive. On the first dive to beautiful Molokini (like a beautiful, super clear aquarium) we saw reef shark, eels and a huge momma lobster who come out and aerated her eggs in the open which we see very clearly. It was just like in the Earth documentary which was very cool! On the second dive, we saw extremely rare pair of harlequin shrimp and an octopus lair (I had asked AJ if we could find some Octopus who had sadly died before we got there but we saw where her eggs were). We also visited an actual WWI Tank and an Amphibious Landing Craft which had both been submerged probably since World War II and now are now covered with coral and served as hiding spots for many fish. AJ explained that each of those vehicles had a beautiful clean sand radius around them due to coral fish they were hiding in those vehicles but only venture so far to feed before they felt insecure. A great day, two great dives and a fantastic crew. Bonus that we saw whales and dolphins on the trip as well. I look forward to diving again with Mike Severns crew when I'm next back in Maui. read more

What can I say, Captain Andy, Molly, AJ, and my guide Warren were just top notch. Don't expect rock star treatment here. Only those who love diving and diving alone should sign up with them. The Molokini dive is not for everyone even though it's very tourist site. The dive requires you be at the harbor by 6 am...YES not kidding. On the day of my dive, it was a cold 60 degree day and rainy. When we arrived, we were greeted by the Captain and was given instructions right away. They wanted to get us on the boat and in the water ASAP because it was such a cold day. We were very appreciative. After getting on the boat, we were provided with full length wet suits and rain jackets to stay warm. Upon arrival at Molokini, we were quickly divided into two groups one to follow Dive Master Warren and the other group was AJ. They had a book of all the marine life you may find in Molokini. After they went through that they went through all the safety instructions. My girlfriend was a brand new certified diver so Warrant wanted to keep her close. Molokini was a beautiful site, much more than I expected. We saw a bunch of trumpet fish and eels. There were also a lot of white corals. The 2nd dive site was St. Anthony off of Wailaia. The site is a preserve where biologist are trying to cultivate corals. They sank an old fishing boat (kind of like the one in Jaws) it was really eerie and hundreds of old used tires. Quite a lot of corals have already been developing all over. It was so interesting. At this site, we saw a lot of frog fish and sea snails. Hats off to the crew for a fantastic morning of diving. They not only provided a fun day, they also provided great snacks. DO NOT pass on the sweet buns. They are just out of this world. One recommendation, if you can add onion soup to that snack list, I'd highly recommended. read more

My husband and I scheduled a dive on a quick weekend trip to Maui. We only had one day to dive and it was unfortunately too windy to dive Molikini. Everyone who worked with us that day was professional and you could tell that they were diving because they loved it. They were very attentive and took care of all our needs on the boat. The group we dove with was small and because of this they were able to give the attention they needed to each individual. The boat has rain slickers for the ride in case you are not prepared (which we weren't) and they serve different snacks from a local bakery with tea, hot chocolate, and water. The only downside to the the experience was that the boat was small and I did get a little sea sick on since the seas were rough. read more

We have been visiting Maui for many years, and again choose Mike Severns Divers in Kihei, Maui. Their dive boat is well equipped, and their dive leaders highly professional. They show genuine concern for individual divers and are never over-crowded because they limit their boat to 8 divers. Every morning they choose the best dive spots for that day's weather conditions. The tanks are always full and well maintained. We highly recommend Mike Severs Divers! Our first dive was off the back wall of Molikini. It was an outstanding dive. The dive leader lit crevices in the wall, revealing a nudibranch, a crab, a fat sea star, a giant sea cucumber and an easy to spot light green frog fish. Our second dive was at a location called Saint Anthony. It was an entertaining leisurely dive with an artificial reef and a sunken ship. The dive leader again shone her light, revealing a stealth octopus that swam out of its hiding place to sit atop a rock and morph into a stony stature. Incredible camouflage! Aboard the ship, the dive leader kept us well informed about sea life. We were extremely lucky to encounter dolphins. The pilot created a wake which the dolphins jumped over. We also saw a whale diving! Their cookies and sweet rolls are also excellent. Since Mike Severns Divers fills up fast, we were lucky to get a reservation. Next year we will book more dives sooner. read more

My 15 year old son and I dove with Severns based on the recommendation in Maui Revealed, and really enjoyed our experience! Andy, AJ and Warren were a pleasure to deal with and AJ and Warren really have a passion for the environment and teaching about the fish we sought and saw. Had a great 3 days of diving with AJ, Warren, and Capt. Andy. They really take time to tell you about cool critters and dive locations. Probably the best at that we've dove with over the last 15 years. Great sense of humor(s) and really friendly & helpful. Would definitely dive with them again in the future. Would have dove more this trip but I have a bad shoulder which started acting up (going for surgery 1st week of Nov.) so I only got to go out 1/2 the number of dives we had planned. Emailed a request for SCUBA and was rejected because I haven't dove in 10+ years. That's totally understandable but the bad customer experience came in after this. Emailed back asking if I could do a refresher course and they said yes, so I booked one locally. Then I was told that I had to rebook, so I did and was rejected again because the spot was full. This all happened in a period of 48 hours. Instead of communicating with me, they simply gave my spot up, forcing me to have to find another company. They did offer to give me a suggestion for another company and they suggested, Maui Dreams Dive Company. I will try them and perhaps they will be better! read more

I dove with them a little over a week ago and had a great experience. The day we dove the boat team consisted of Andy, Warren and Pauline. You can tell that all three of them love what they do and there was no doubt that your safety and a great experience was their main goal. While being focused on safety, they were still very attentive and engaging. Andy is also hilarious. On the ride out to Molokini they talked to all of the divers and got to know us, they didn't try to do a dive briefing over the sound of the boat engines. Once we reached the site they did a great dive briefing. Pauline was very thorough about the area, the planned dive and what we might see. She made sure everybody was comfortable and ready to dive. Both dives were awesome and she was able to point out some really spectacular things to see. I would absolutely dive with them again. Diving for the first time at Molokini and "three anchor" dive sites, as well as for the first time with Pauline, Andy, Kate and Warren, I could not have been happier. Pauline took the time to explain some history about the sites as well as the creatures we might come across and the behavior they may be doing. I enjoyed that and had no problem listening to her explain what I was about to see or saw on my last dive. It's one thing to just explore on your own, but to actually understand what you see or saw makes it that much more memorable. The diving itself was fantastic, great visibility, plentiful creatures and a smooth ride out and back. I never felt unsafe or that any of the crew where doing anything to jeopardize my safety or enjoyment. I only needed to rent a BCD, tank and wetsuit and all items were in good working order. Dive with Mike Severens SCUBA. The whole crew is awesome! They do EVERYTHING for you. Our guide even gave us a mini-lecture on what we expected to see, complete with photos! The crew was laid back and let us set the pace. Besides the crater, we dove a shallow dive rich in invertebrate diversity. As a biologist, I really appreciated the two very different dives. My first time in Maui (all my previous visits to Hawaii were to the big island) and set up my diving with Mike Severn's Diving. This is really the type of dive operation that makes you relax and get the most out of your dives. When you first board, you'll get to grub on some fresh baked cookies, sticky buns, coffee, and other snacks for the trip. The boat is clean and comfortable, they even offer you some rain slickers in case you are a little cold. Our boat captain was a super nice guy, the deck hand Kate was an absolute joy and so helpful with everything. Our dive master AJ was incredible. Our pre dive briefing was thorough and she went over some of the rare species we might see. She made sure everyone was safe and comfortable and really made it a great experience! These days, I usually rent all of my gear wherever I go and their equipment was in great shape, well maintained, and fit just right. I've been on dive boats in the past where the crew is a little stuck up and treats everyone like they are beginners, not so with this crew! They make you feel like one of the gang and like you belong there! When I return to Maui, I will be booking my dive trips through them without question. read more

Dove 6 times with Mike Severns Dive Crew on my recent trip. We've been on several other dive boats on Maui and this crew was light years apart from the 5 others we have dove with. The difference? Great dive sites, education in marine conservation and biology, the safest experience out there and comfort no matter the location and conditions. Another reason...they find all the hard to find species you came to see!! I saw multiple Frog Fish, Grays, White Tips, lots of rare Nudies, Rare Eels, Juvenile Rock Mover Wrasse, Devil Scorpions, Monk Seal, Dolphins, and Harlequin Shrimp!!! Oh yeah, 7 turtles on one dive alone. Plenty of turtles and the list of rare species goes on and on! The crew is actually there for you with heaps of experience and wont treat you like another mainland number. The pre dive briefings the best! The photos they show you, are from books THEY have written! Captain Andy, Seth, Warren, AJ, Pauline.....Thank you for a trip I will never forget. Only one place to go when I return! Fantastic experience. These folks are extraordinarily professional. The dive instructors were not only veteran divers, but had been with this particular outfit for at least a decade each, which speaks to the culture of the company. They all inspired confidence, and were easy going and good humored. We dove with AJ, who was fabulous. She obviously loves diving, loves the ocean, and enjoys introducing people to the beauty of Maui's waters. Fun to watch her playfully interact with the fish! Also, the team is really efficient: you bypass any dive shop, meeting right on the boat launch, then get signed in efficiently, given your gear, and head right out to sea. We dove the Molokini Crater, then one other artificial reef site off the Maui west coast. Saw whales on the way in and out, heard their calls underwater. Saw a shark, a six foot moray that came out for a swim, and thousands of fish. The dive team takes the time to talk about fish behavior before entering the water, which adds to the experience. One of the best dive experiences I have had. Went to Molokini and Turtle town with them. Dive masters were super knowledgeable, all the crew were very friendly and personable. The dive masters went over what we could expect to see and gave explanations ahead of each dive so that we really appreciated what we were looking at but they didn't bore us to death with a bunch of facts we won't remember. There were about 4 people to one dive master in our group. Oh, and IMHO they had fantastic snacks (ie homemade the morning of sticky buns, 4 kinds of cookies, and a variety of other salty/sweet treats). read more

Great company with great service. Made a reservation the day before and they couldn't have been more accommodating. Had gear and equipment, including an underwater camera ready for us. Smooth check-in at 6 am. They even had headlamps to use while filling out forms in the pre-light hours. Nice selection of snacks and drinks on board, fruit, coffee, juice, cookies, bagels, trail mix, and warm cinnamon buns. Super friendly crew and great dive masters who ensured that everyone in the group got to see cool things. I like that this company picks their dive sites based on customer interest. They also have small groups. They divided the 6 divers in our boat into two groups of three, each with a dive master. This is one the top dive operators that I've ever gone out with. I enjoyed the extra time spent explaining the dive site and possible fish behaviors we had the possibility to witness. The dive master also was attentive and noticed some divers has fogging issues on the first dive and provided soft scrub to 'cure' it. These guys are like the NatGeo of scuba divers on Maui. They know the area intimately - locations and sea life. Mike Severns was recommended to me by a very good friend, scuba instructor and tour operator and they lived up to everything I had heard. Fresh hot cinnamon buns and cookies, coffee, lots of room on the boat. AJ, Warren and Andy were awesome - so knowledgeable and very friendly. I managed to break part of my regulator which Warren kindly fixed for me. Andy was our comic relief and AJ seemed to be as excited as we were to locate sea life during our dives. She took the time to show photos and explain the animal behavior prior to the dives so we knew exactly what we were looking for. They asked us what we might like to see on the dives - we gave them a laundry list of creatures from sharks to neudibranches and we saw EVERYTHING! We did the inside of molikini crater and another location just off a black sand beach, south of makena landing. I HIGHLY recommend. I've made several scuba trips to the Caribbean - Roatan, Cozumel, Yucatan Peninsula - these guys were really top shelf. read more

I had a great couple of dives with these guys. I've been on dives with plenty of different outfits but I was really impressed with how well-run the operation was from start to finish. Everything was top notch. Very knowledgeable crew who took time to explain interesting things to look for in the local waters - going through details of little nuances to look for etc. It made the dive much more enjoyable vs. just swimming around looking at fish (which is also awesome). I was only in town long enough for the one day of dives, but I left really wanting to go again. Pauline & her highly professional crew give "true divers" the experience of not just diving, but a fun course in marine biology. The captain took the time to learn all 12 of us on the boat by name and the diver masters talked to each of us to find out what we wanted to get out of the dive and they delivered. I recently went through my certification for scuba diving on Kauai. My friend suggested I look into scuba diving on Maui for my upcoming trip as it is whale season and offers some good diving options. I immediately started researching options in the general vicinity of where I would be staying and Mike Severns diving came up several times with great reviews, small groups with a dive master, great information about the area and sea creatures that might be seen. After checking out a few places with good reviews and hearing different thoughts from local divers my boyfriend (who has logged hundreds of dives, more than my handful) called a few places including Mike Severn's company to ask some questions, get pricing, and a better feel of the companies and options. We ended up taking the last 2 spots on a 6am boat trip the next day with and wow! We were so happy we went diving with them. The boat crew and dive masters made me feel so welcome and comfortable even before we got on the boat. As it was my first dive not in the discovery dive (which I did in Costa Rica) nor in certification classes (Kauai) I do not have too much to compare it to or specific information to give as other more experienced divers might. However, I had seen a couple of bigger boats with more people go out on the water in Maui and was first very pleased we only had 12 people with 2 dive masters, so 3 groups of 2 per dive master. And we got out earlier than many other boats. When whales came near to the boat or us to them, of course we had to stop within so many feet, so we did, and when they kept coming closer to dance around the boat, they asked if anyone wanted to put on a mask and put their head under water.... I jumped up and got to see a mamma and calf playing together underwater while one of our dive masters held my feet - as I was so exicted and hurrying to put my chest down on boat and my head underwater, i forgot to take off my jacket - both AJ and Pauline helped me take it off and get my head underwater without losing or breaking the enthusiasm! An epic start already. Andy is an awesome, jovial captain - he was really tracking whales swimming under water and telling us where to watch and how to look for them from above the water. Warren is a super friendly and helpful deck hand (and diver) - and not that I mind turning my heavy soaking wet wet suit around but he took it from me when I got it off before I even had a chance to switch it from inside out, just a sweet bonus. Everyone helped to make sure my fits for things down to my fins and booties were good, they even talked to me about the best mask to use and not use as a new diver. Super helpful and informative. Patricia and AJ showed us so many special creatures near the reefs and on the sandy, rocky bottom of the ocean. They went over a basic diving safety review/signals/unique things about their gear, told us what to expect underwater, what signals they might use for different creatures, what to do if we did need their attention, what to do if we wanted them to come look at something we found under water. It was both community oriented and personalized, an awesome true first dive. Andy, Warren, Pauline, and AJ were such a joy to dive with and so knowledgeable about the area and added so much more to the epic dive experience itself. Pauline and AJ showed me new things in the ocean and made sure those of us who were looking at what they were showing us really were seeing the various creatures and ideas they were pointing out, even going over it all when we got on board.. showing us what and how lobsters eat certain clams, what to look for ourselves, how to spot hard to spot creatres, and more. The equipment and gear was good, like new. The boat was super comfy too, equipped with a toilet and stocked with drinks and snacks. I felt super comfortable to ask questions from needing to use the bathroom (boat had to be in a safe spot) to are my fins tight enough to what size are whales when they are born, great to be with people who love what they do and love helping others to have these experiences too! The price was so good and so affordable. Gave them hugs afterwards and really look forward to diving with them again on Maui. read more

My newly certified girlfriend and I (400+ dives) decided to treat ourselves and dive one day on Maui while we were visiting from Kauai. After researching and speaking to many, we could not be more pleased that we chose Mike Severns Diving to dive with. Beginning to end we had the kind of experience every diver wants - a professional outfit through and through, good boat, top of the line captain, and dive masters that loved their diving, the coral, the creatures, and sharing their knowledge with us.
