Had a refresher shore dive with dive master Michael S. on Mar 4, 2026. We dove at Kahekili Beach Park. Joining us were 2 other divers, one experienced and one on my level. Michael did a great job of going over what to expect. He did a great job during the dive as I originally struggled a bit, mostly due my long layoff from diving and the current. However he kept me calm and I improved my technique during the dive, I was use to drift dives. I was originally scheduled for a 2nd dive but we spent 55 minutes on the 1st dive, more than I expected. I didn't expect that length of time or that heavy of a current. Scuba Shack refunded the cost of the 2nd dive. It turned out 1 dive was perfect amount of time and we saw lots of fish, juvenile rays and even a turtle. read more

Charlie and Michelle are awesome. We rented some snorkel and beach gear for the week and decided to join Capt. Charlie and his crew for a trip to Molokini. We were 4 snorkelers with 6 divers. We had to be at the marina at 5:20am and the early start was worth it. We were the 1st boat out to Molokini. We got to watch the sunrise while the scuba divers got ready. Capt Charlie was the over watch for us snorkelers and he gave us very clear instructions on where to go and how far away from the boat we were allowed to wander. Next stop was Turtle town, we only saw one turtle but still enjoyed an hour snorkeling around. The staff was great and the snorkeling was fun. We went back in to Scuba Shack a couple of times and every time they gave us great suggestions on places to eat that didn't disappoint. read more

The seal on my card holder was no longer water tight, so I ventured to Scuba Shack wanting a replacement. Michele was holding court and she said this item was on backorder. When I explained the seal had worn out, allowing some water to come in as I swam, she said, "I can fix that," and dashed into the back office. She came back out to the counter with an opened, tiny container. She said it was silicon grease and she applied some to the gasket of my case. Et Voilà, the seal is now water tight and just like new! Charlie, Flecha, and Matt were great!! I was the solo snorkeler while my friend dove with some others. They ensured everyone was safe the entire time and also made the whole experience a blast. They were all super knowledgeable about the water and wildlife as well. Saw an array of fish, some sharks and jellyfish. Charlie did a little joyride on the boat afterwards too. Sure, the captain has an interesting personality, but I didn't find him annoying or otherwise out of line. In fact, he goes out of his way to ensure the divers are paying attention to what he has to say. Many boat captains don't care if you're listening or not. The equipment, knowledgeable staff, safety precautions, interval snacks, fresh hot water shower and the overall experience was excellent. And...in my more than 20 years of diving, I've never been on a faster dive boat. Dove Molokini crater. A decent dive with great visibility, sea-life and even a baby shark!! highly recommend Scuba Shack. My boyfriend dove and I snorkeled with a friend. They took us to two dive spots, the crater at Molikini and closer to the coast. We saw an amazing array of wildlife (including a whale!). They provided wet suits and the equipment was all in great condition. The early start was perfect since as a result we were the only boat at the crater. Despite the fact that only two of us were snorkeling and the rest were diving I felt well taken care of and a part of the group. The divers were very happy with the dives. We had many levels of experience and I could tell the dive master, Mike, made everyone feel safe and comfortable. The owner, Charlie, was terrific as well. Owner wife is great. Owner husband is a condacending and rude to the point of offence. Rented 3 beach chairs for two weeks. He was pissed they had some sand remnants on them upon return. (Sand beach chairs) suggested i should have washed them in the shower or something. Am i supposed to detail my rental car before returning it also? What about my resort rental, clean? Vacuum? Wash windows? What a tool. He then insisted i got a paddleboard also. We went back and forth on that until he realized he had another client with very similiar sur name. He had nothing to say. Prices are the same everywhere so avoid him. read more

I went on a two-tank dive to Molokini Crater with my friend and parents. We arrived at the Kihei Boat Ramp a few minutes before 5:30 a.m., as instructed. Things started to get weird, immediately. Charlie, the captain and owner, was extremely rude to our entire party. My father, who has large feet, called ahead to make sure they would have fins to fit his foot size. He was assured that they could accommodate him by providing rental gear. Charlie offered my father fins that were several sizes too small. When my father mentioned he called ahead, he was dismissed by Charlie who said "Those are the biggest ones available. That's all you get." My father explained to us that the gear did not fit him, even though he was promised that they would provide gear in his size. A few minutes later, Charlie threw a pair of larger fins at my father and said, "Here. I can't take your whining anymore." Everyone within earshot was visibly uncomfortable. Things continued to go downhill. While underway, Charlie continued to berate us and other passengers. During the "safety" brief, Charlie informed us that if we did not surface immediately when our dive guide told us to, our BCD's would be inflated and we would be shot to the surface. As an experienced diver with PADI Advanced and Rescue certifications, I knew this reckless behavior would risk an air embolism and even death. When finishing our second dive, we followed our dive guide to shallower water to make a safety stop. My friend and I are both experienced divers, and we know the importance of taking a safety stop of at least three minutes. Our dive computers told us that we still needed two more minutes for a safety stop, but our dive guide motioned for us to surface with him. We both pointed to our dive computers and motioned that we needed a couple more minutes. Our guide began angrily waving his hands and banging on his tank to try to make us surface before our safety stop was over. My friend and I looked at each other and shrugged our shoulders, signaling that our health and safety were more important than blindly following orders. We finished our safety stop, and when we surfaced our dive guide angrily berated us and told us that we should have followed his orders because he is a "professional." On the way back, the reckless and dangerous behavior continued. As we neared the dock, Charlie began to speed up, even though there were swimmers nearby. He said "hold on" and then went to full speed, and drove in a circle to wake jump the vessel in the harbor. Multiple passengers, including my father, fell over from the force. My father bruised a rib. My father is a boat captain and an experienced mariner, and he tried to tell Charlie that his behavior was dangerous. Charlie said, "You should have held on, I told you so." We were all shocked by this behavior, which ruined what should have been a fun day. I am concerned that divers with less experience could be seriously injured or even killed if they are unlucky enough to dive with this operation. read more

Captain Charley started out by answering the phone after hours and was fun right from the start. We checked in at the dive shop and met the family. The morning of our 1st dive we met out at the docks and he had an Amazing assortment of Coffee and Teas to start us on the right foot. Our kids are junior scuba certified so we expected somewhat lame dives but Matt and Charley took us right to Molokini & Makena landing (that was fantastic with plenty of caves and caverns to explore. Kids are tall and skinny so we expected the kids to get cold but they had extra wet suits to double up when needed- even for myself. The boat is extremely fast and they give you plenty of warning before he takes you for a really fast fun ride. The best part was a hot shower after 2 dives. We had a terrible experience with the older gentleman in this store front. Rather than a friendly greeting upon arrival, he practically bit my head off as I walked through the door telling me if I wasn't vaccinated to get out. I let that slide thinking maybe he had experienced covid and had been really ill. Our entire family rented snorkel gear and when we arrived at the beach in Lahaina (45 minutes away) that afternoon, we discovered my Son's foot gear was torn and not usable. We took the gear back the next day and the same rude gentleman was there and rather than apologizing and offering to waive the rental fee for the inconvenience, he told my husband he should have brought them back for a different pair. My husband explained to him we were 45 minutes away when it was discovered and the grouchy and rude gentleman offered nothing other than condescending comments. We will NEVER support this business ever again and we also notified our resort of his rude and unprofessional behaviors so they can recommend a friendlier option. My husband said it best, that guy is rude and a miserable person and doesn't belong in a customer facing role. Patrons of a business deserve to be treated in a welcoming and respectful manner and you won't get that here. read more

My wife and I booked a trip on this boat because I snorkel and she dives so it was the perfect opportunity for us to do a trip together. We had heard that Molokini was an incredible sight, so we booked it in the shop. The headline here is that I would never book a trip with this company again. Another reviewer described the captain as prickly--that is correct. I would add demeaning and pompous as well. He exuded a creepy vibe from the beginning, trying to take photos of the women on the boat (one declined, but he kept trying). He also joked about pushing people into the water when they were going to get off the boat to snorkel, so when I was about to hop into the water but he put his hand on my back, I asked him to please not touch me, and he did not like that. He also was completely inappropriate with his female employee. She guided the dives and was in the water with our group so when she got out and was taking her wetsuit off and rinsing her hair, he came up behind her and was helping her rinse it, running his hands along her head and down her hair. I'm creeped out just writing about it now. I am certain he would not do that with a male employee. The employee was a fantastic guide and host, but I don't want to pay money to be creeped out by the captain every again. read more

I needed to just rent tanks and weights for some personal diving. Price was reasonable but the owner is a real grouch. Two people were returning tanks before me, he asked how the dive was. They told him it wasn't great and he said, "Oh'well, I just rent it!" I asked his thoughts on our shore dive plans, and he just blew me off. I get it, he probably gets asked a lot and there is no money in renting tanks... but common we had a massive rain and there is mud everywhere. If I have some good dives, I'll do more. We had the best day with Charlie and his crew! Our family of 6 went on an early morning snorkeling adventure to Molokini Crater and one other location that was amazing. Watching the sunrise at Molokini was worth the early morning wake up and boat ride. The early sunrise ensures you'll be the first group at Molokini to watch all the marine life search for breakfast. You won't have to swim around a huge group of people and lose your family. Charlie keeps you safe by keeping a watchful eye from the boat - a wonderful captain. Kaylee was our snorkel guide and knew the coolest spots and pointed out so much life I would not have not seen otherwise. Sure, it seems like you don't need a guide to "just snorkel." But if you go with Scuba Shack you are getting so much more than a snorkel. We were greeted with fresh coffee and snacks at the marina, a sunrise at Molokini Crater, amazing guided snorkel to parts of Molokini we never saw with other companies, more snacks and refreshments, another awesome spot it seems like only the locals know about, then to finish it all off with a boat ride back our whole family will talk about forever. Charlie makes the experience one you will remember with memories you will cherish. His personality is kind and funny. He runs a great operation and once he turns on BOTH engines of Double Scoop your cheeks will be sure to curl (the ones on your face, duh!). Oh yeah and don't forget to tip your boat crew! Scuba diving Molakini with Charlie's outfit SCUBA Shack was a mixed bag. Good fast boat, equipment was in good shape, and diver support was great. The thing we couldn't get past was the endless stream of off-colored jokes, ego-driven self aggrandizing and unwanted (sometimes physical) attention given to the younger women on the boat. The final straw was the stunt he pulled driving his boat really fast toward the harbor and then with little warning turned into a tight 360 spin just to show off. The negatives outweigh the positives in my mind and I cannot recommend them over other operators in the area. read more

Thanks to Captain Charley and Dive Guide Mike for ten great dives these past couple of weeks. We were visiting with our friend Ron, so we thought we knew what to expect - he is a long-time fan of Scuba Shack and Charley - but we had our expectations exceeded in every way. Scuba Shack includes gear "rental" with every dive as a no cost add on, but we still brought most of our own gear. We ended up using some of their gear because it was great stuff! I have dived a backplate and wing since 1976 and was a little concerned about using a vest-type BCD, but everything worked perfectly. Ron used Charley's regulators and computer and he said that it breathed as well as his fancy Apeks. The boat, Double Scoop, is something that needs to be experienced to be believed. The website, and Charley, brag about how powerful, fast, and comfortable it is but the words are nothing until you are cruising to Molokini early in the morning. Unbelievably fast and smooth! When Charley puts his foot in the throttle for the run home, it really is like a 800 Hp jet ski. I really appreciate the jet drive because there are no bladed propellers when you climb back on the boat. Plus, the snacks are healthy and nutritious (grapes and pineapple) or not (muffins, lemon loaf, and cinnamon loaf) but always delicious. While Charley was great, Mike was the real star of our dives. His philosophy of touring is to take what the ocean gives you, so we had wonderful dives that visited marine life, saw the topography, and did not fight the current. We visited the front and back of the Molokini crater and dove closer to the Maui shore. Each dive, of 10, was unique. Mike is a master at finding small and unique things for photographers, while keeping us who are interested in the general landscape busy looking at the varied topography. Mike did an excellent job of managing the dive route with the diver's air consumption; those of us with good air consumption never had our dive shortened by those who are still working on their air consumption. As divers became low on air, he sent them up for a safety stop and extraction while he continued the dive in the relative vicinity of the boat (if it was moored) or where Charley could retrieve them (if it was a live boat pickup dive). After the last dive was HOT SHOWERS and full gear rinse and cleaning; we had to take our own showers, but they handled the gear! We greatly appreciated the care and commitment to safety we experienced diving with Scuba Shack and hope to return soon. read more

Diving with Scuba Shack was undoubtedly the best decision I made in Maui. Why? Because Captain Charley,and the crew are such a superb team that can only enhance your experience of being in the already beautiful tropical waters of musubi land. I recently got certified with my bf and being that this was our very first dive post certification, we wanted to make sure that we hooked it up with the best crew ship ever. I did my due diligence and searched high and low and found that Scuba Shack by far, had the best reviews and character out of everything else available. And you know what? They had very good reason to be the top ones to charter with! Ok so if you had a choice to dive in Maui or Oahu, I would DEFINITELY choose Maui. Why? The Molikini Crater and Turtle Town. Enough said. I've seen fish I've never seen before and I've dived in several other tropical places before. Saw my pal Stingy the Sting Ray and even Crush the Sea Turtle, who I had the pleasure of swimming next to. AND we even got to see a few whales plus their little ones trailing side to side by them :) I love whalessss. So what are some tips I can share to you? -Bring a sweater or a light jacket. You will be riding a boat in the wee hours of the morning and it will get a bit chilly with wind lashing at your face. It's Hawaii, I know, but it can still be cold when the sun isn't out. -If you're prone to sea sickness, don't forget to take some dramamine or some generic brand to counter any unsightful regurgitations. I'm super sensitive, but the waves weren't as bad as some waters out there, so no worries my friend! -Bring extra cash. You'll end up wanting to tip lots since the crew is just THAT good. -Oh, and don't forget to throw away your used toilet paper in the waste basket and NOT the toilet as this will clog the bathroom up, which I accidentally threw a piece in by accident due to my clumsiness, but luckily, the Captain dismissed it and was super cool about it ^_^ not to say that you should go throwing tampons and crap down the toilet. Seriously. I could not have asked for a better diving adventure. I am tempted to make a trip out to Maui again just to go on another dive with this fabulous crew. Learned a lot and saw tons of beautiful aquatic life. Get on it and go with Scuba Shack for a super grand time!! read more

We dove three straight days with this crew and really enjoyed it. It is a no nonsense group and not ideal if you are there to enjoy a leisurely sightseeing boat ride. They aim to be the first boat to Molokini and always are. The boat is fast and not meant for relaxing. My father in law and I were diving in the mornings and looking to enjoy the rest of the day with our family. The start time was 5:30am (yikes) but we were always home by 10:15 which allowed to us to meet everyone else for breakfast each day. The crew were professional and friendly. Gear was setup perfectly and all the equipment was new or near-new. Captain Charley is not everybody's favorite but in my book he's a fun character. Commands attention, maintains control of his boat and crew, and delivered us safely, efficiently and without incident. Does he exude an old playboy vibe? Sure. But some certainly find it charming and any allegations of creepy sound like projection of prior trauma and not a reflection of the Charley I observed for 3 days. He knows his job and when to be serious but spends a lot of his time trying to keep everyone laughing (while supervising a dangerous activity that requires a special rider for your life insurance policy). We appreciated his humor and that of his all-female crew. We will check-in for more dives on our next trip to Maui. read more

Incredibly professional, no frills, super fun dive operation!! I called ahead and requested what I would like for both dive sites, and they were both honored! We did back wall of Molokini and the St Anthony dive wreck. My Divemaster was actually the owner of Scuba Shack, and took lots of pictures and pointed out some very cool animals (without harrassing the animals, unlike some other local dive shops around Maui). Note - the boat is standing room only, but it's so fast that you get to Molokini in under 15 minutes. Our experience with Scuba Shack was 100% positive. As Yelp puts it, a solid "Woohoo!" First, the boat is a rocket! Out to Molokini in 10 minutes. Do a two-tank dive and back to shore at 10am. I love starting the day with SCUBA and still having the whole day ahead to do whatever. Doug is the dive-version of a surfer dude: long hair, big smile, and "awesome"s. He was so much fun to dive with and was very good at spotting the cool critters. We saw 3 octopuses in 4 dives! I don't know if that's normal, but it sure blew my mind. He also made sure I got some cool pictures. The gear was all excellent and seemed very new. They apparently rotate gear every month. We will be back for more diving with Scuba Shack! read more

Captain Charley and his wonderful dive masters, Kaylee and Katie went above and beyond to make our dives a great experience. You can be assured of your safety, comfortability and best dive spots with all the experience that Captain Charley has acquired throughout the years. If you need to rent diving equipment everything is included in the flat rate for a two tank dive. They sell their b/c's and regulator for about half price after it's only been used for a few months, so it is in great condition. My husband and I got certified in 2007 from Scuba Shack and were able to do a few more dives with them during our October 2021 vacation here in Maui. They go out early to miss the crowds and enjoy the smoother early morning conditions. Plus the boat is really fast and fun! They are the best valued dive shop we have ever used. read more

Go with this diving company for sure! They are cheaper than others, have a stellar crew, go out early to beat other boats, and have a hot handheld shower in the back of the boat! The first dive was at Molokini Crater. During WW2 the navy used this as target practice - pretty crazy! Then we had a continental breakfast with a lesson on different sea life we will likely see. Next, we were off to our second dive at Turtle Town. Here we went into a bubble cave (where you can swim up to the top and take your regulator out). We saw white tipped sharks, Hawaiian sea turtles, sand eels, flatfish, lizard fish, etc. Be careful of the spiny black sea urchins. There was an abundance of them on the second dive. Also, we saw a humpback whale and dolphins during the beginning of the trip out to the crater. The crew made me feel extremely comfortable while diving especially when my right ear was having difficulty equalizing. The dive master stayed by my side during that issue. Last, Captain Charley made sure the woman had nice warm showers with conditioner so we had a nice hair day after a perfect dive!! read more

Best Southern Dive Shop on the Island Meet Charlie on here, its his shop. They are Georgia transplants and love catering to customers here. I've dove with these guys many times and they are so solid with customer service. Do the Molokini Crater back side drift dive if you can, its like being a superhero. They dump you on one side and you drift dive 70-90 feet on nitrox about 45 minutes. You see literally everything and feel like your superman you move so fast through the water. These guys have snacks on their boats and there Instructors, and DM's are solid as well. If you don't have your own gear they have it all set up and ready for you on the boat and will even prep your next tanks. Love Charlie and this Kihei team. Definitely a must. Note to all these 1 star haters. I don't think you realize how amazing this family owned spot is and you should give them a 2nd go, really solid people and friendly all around. One of the best scuba experiences my husband and I have ever had. I have the tendency to become anxious before a dive, and I didn't have a drop of anxiety!! Low quality products and rentals. Low quality customer service. Low quality staff. Low quality policies. Went here twice and each time they gave awful advice and just tried to upsell me on things I already had. The mask I rented fogged up and was extremely cheap. I asked about the note they have posted at the door saying "Stay out if unvaccinated!!" Because the lady at the desk didn't have a mask on, so I assumed it was a joke as they clearly don't take covid seriously. The lady working said it was a requirement of the state's local mandate which is so so so inaccurate and wrong. I am unvaccinated but she still let me rent my mask and buy a few things. The second time I came in I was yelled before stepping foot inside the door. Charlie didn't have a mask on either this time but was sure to kick anyone out that was unvaccinated. These people have zero common sense and are driving away all of their customers. read more

We scheduled a tour for the next morning and gave verbal consent over the phone twice (once at 2:43pm and again at 3:40pm) that we were confirmed to scuba dive the next day. Charley told us to come into the shop before 5:00pm to give CC information and sign paper work if I didn't feel comfortable giving it over the phone. I said no problem and got there at 4:40pm. Once we arrived he said "nope, trips canceled because you guys couldn't confirm with us- we had a lot of people waiting on you so we cancelled it." I informed him that I confirmed with him and the female employee that we would be there before 5:00pm like we discussed on the phone. He said doesn't matter, it's canceled. He said this as if it was our fault, with no apology or remorse for going back on his word. This shop is run by a rude employer and their disgraceful attitude is going to run their company into the ground. Word of advice to potential customers: vacation is too short to deal with false promises and rude people like this. Word of advice to the shop: get a new manager/employee, because having him as the face of the company is extremely problematic and does not reflect kindly on your business. read more

I was with a group of 4 people, 1 diver and 3 snorkelers. We were looking for something that was a smaller size (more personable) . We did not want to compete for space and help with a large group. Scuba Shack was a perfect size with captain Charlie, scuba Shane, and snorkele Toby along with 5 snorkelers and 7 divers. We decided on the 6 am excursion. Charlie sent us a nice email going over the history of his shop and confirming the time to meet. Yes, as previously mentioned in other reviews, Charlies boat is fast which is lots of fun. Our excursion was around 4 hours, which I found to be a perfect amount of time. read more
