Their guy comes, in fixing one problem generates another problem and then they claim it cannot be done till Monday though they work on Sundays and the insurance company says they can come out on Saturday or Sunday. Follow-up review. A few days after Jonathan and his co-worker from Mike Stern plumbing were unable to clear my slow kitchen drain with a snake and then a waterjet, I hired another plumber. The other plumber was successful in clearing the drain in under one hour with only a snake. This plumber even showed me on a camera where the line had been blocked, that it was now clear, and how far from drainout it was. They charged me less than $200 to clear it which included their service fee. If there is a positive to my encounter with Mike Stern plumbing, it is that I am only out $650 to them for their failed attempts and not the $4500 that they wanted to break though the flooring and concrete slab to get to the drain pipe plus the cost for the followup repairs to the tile floor that I would have to pay someone else to fix. Jonathan tried to convince me that the $4500 price was a deal as it was less than what they normally charge at $5600 and he asked to start the job the next morning. After looking at my previous records, I confirmed their quote was outrageous because I had only paid $600 to have a drain repaired under the concrete slab six years ago. This experience is sad because they had done some decent work for me in the past but I will never hire them again. read more

Also, we had them take out a permit for the work. Steve Ortiz is the owner was very nice and gave us good suggestions about how to tackle the installation including up-sizing the size of the pipe for potential future upgrades such as changing to a tankless water heater or adding a bathroom. His price was competitive, he and his employees were very professional and did a great job including installing the piping under a sidewalk and retaining wall. This outfit is highly suspect . They charged my friend $120.00 for a $22.00 Sharkbite coupler you can get at Lowe's on Topanga Canyon . Then they used a hammer to screw up the walls all over the place and found the leak where my friend told them where it was in the first place . After $850.00 plus .... They left my friend to pay over $600.00 to repair the sloppy disastrous holes all over the house. When all they had to do was make one clean cut where you could hear the hissing from the water coming through the wall in the bathroom . I usually do not make reviews as is a waste of my time but this event prompted me to write something in yelp to help others be aware. I have home warranty firstam and they contracted mike stern plumbing as my water heater leaked. Guess what. The other reviews are correct. sergie was the technician and was rude. He was telling us he refused to work on other water heater like mine. In short he was saying, i have to be thankful that he is providing a quote. They are charges me (non covered charges) For "modifying" the pan and two flex hoses ( " extending the tube because too close to cpper pipe") Pan they charge $130 and $225 for two short flex hoses. All of these retail less than $50 dollars in lowes. Plus $60 service fee. While absolutely nothing wrong with old one and can be used as same size. I called sergie and vanessa if they can use existing hoses and pan as if these are optional, not covered. I would not need it or i can provide my own. The response i get it is all or nothing. Same response with firstam claims specialist named karen. This is like a scam they ripped off home owners like us. While cashout option is just $358 from firstam, leaving us no choice to continue with "overcharging" contractors or adding something you do not need. Per firstam said the charges are "legitimate charges". I do not recommend this company at all. I hope someone do class suit with firstam and these contractors if proven that they are doing this across the board. ( not isolated but common). I used Mike Stern Plumbing for two jobs, a trenchless mainline repair and a irrigation fix. I first called Mike Stern Plumbing in January 2012 because I noticed toilet paper was coming out of my overfill drain in front of my front door. I was hoping the line could be snaked and cleared. Greg G. from the Sun Valley location came out to access the problem. He attempted to snake the line several times with no luck. The roots from the trees on my property had grown into the line. Long story short, I needed the mainline repaired. Greg and his crew worked for about 3 days and repaired the line via the trenchless repair. It was not cheap but comparable to what plumbers would have charged. (I had some friends who also had the misfortune of roots taking over their line and they told me how much their repair cost was.) Although not thrilled with the entire ordeal, I was happy I chose Mike Stern Plumbing for this job. Greg G. and his helper, Charles, were true professionals. They were on time and kept me updated as they progressed along. They did a thorough job and even cleaned up the place in such a manner that you could not even tell my front yard was dug up. In March 2012, I had Mike Stern Plumbing repaired an irrigation problem. Not too sure what I thought about the price. Since I was not home, I'm not sure who did the repair but it was done well. Greg and Charles showed up to close the job and once again left the place in immaculate condition. So, thank you to Greg and Charles! You guys are an assset to Mike Stern Plumbing. read more

Left work early since their appt. time was the only window they had open...drove an hour, to find no one had showed up, called 3 times, the lady answering the phone assured me all 3 times that the technician was 5 minutes away... We bought an older home (1955) on a raised foundation that had mostly galvanized service that produced brown & murky water; this just needed to be re-piped with copper. I spent about 3 weeks getting quotes from four different companies. Learned a lot more about this process then I had ever thought... Steve and his son came out to the house several times during the estimate phase to explain and go over options with us. I selected Stern Plumbing because of their personal touch and attention to detail. Since I was committed to going through this, I had a pretty big 'wish list'. They were not the cheapest of the bunch but really wanted our business and made us feel the most comfortable in moving forward. If you have never gone through a re-pipe, then you should know it is probably a lot more involved and invasive then you think. There is a lot of sawing, cutting, pounding & soldering going on for several days as pipes are traced, replaced, connected and secured. Steve and his crew spend about 5 days at my particular job which consisted of a complete re-pipe (removal of two old water heaters out of the house and replace with one tankless & hot water recirculating system on side of house, new laundry service which including gas line and venting in garage, raising water valves and shower heads, ice maker service, faucets, water filtration and more...) They were focused on the job and kept me apprised of progress and issues that needed remediation. They communicated well with each other as well as worked well with other contractors I had in the house. They were meticulous and clean as you could possibly imagine during a major project as this. The job is done now and our family is very happy to have clean and plentiful hot water.... Having read several reviews of Mike Stern Plumbing, I could see that among several strong recommendations, the only complaints were actually complaints about the reviewers' Home Warranty Company, not Mike Stern Plumbing. As a DIY family we have very seldom used a plumbing company. When we bought our new home and found out that 1 of our 2 brick gas fireplaces had a bad valve, we were bummed. The fireplaces are an awesome feature in our great room, but the valve was from the 60's and buried in the floor, in over 6 inches of concrete. This was far from a typical plumbing project!! To start, I could not find anyone that would even look for a replacement part, and most companies were not willing to estimate cutting the floor without cracking the bricks and the rebuilding or replacing the valve, and patching the concrete. However, Steve, the President of the Mike Stern Plumbing, provided us an estimate explaining the several scenarios and options to complete the repair. I was impressed that he was genuinely excited to work on a project this challenging. When it came time to do the job, Steve returned to our house with Serge and was there, personally, to work and advise on the entire project. In the end, a complicated repair was completed beautifully with a brand new valve, at a reasonable price. read more

My grandmother used this company to fix some problems she was having in a spare bathroom. She had a leak under the sink and a problem with the toilet. He knocked the wall out under the sink and went under the house to replace the leaking pipe He said fixed the issues with the toilet. Great. BUT the quality of work that was done to repair the wall he knocked out was pathetic. My grandmother, being 87, couldn't bend down to inspect the work and I was unable to get the day off from work to assist her. Unfortunately, when I was able to come over and check on it, the wall had already dried and was completely starting to crack and flake off. It looks like a child playing with play-doh tried to shove stuff in the wall and around the pipe for a quick fix. He said he left a hole in the wall for her in case she needed to ever get back there. Why? I have no idea what he was thinking. We don't need a hole in the wall under the sink... Here are the pictures of the disaster under the sink. Hopefully this is resolved quickly. I will be calling first thing tomorrow morning. Update: I rushed off to work Monday morning and forgot to call on behalf of my Grandmother. I was pleasantly surprised that when I came over after work, the original tech had already called to apologize about the quality of work done and explained he would be out Tuesday to repair the patch work. It was fixed quickly and correctly. We are all human, mistakes happen. BUT It looks 10 times better. Thank you guys for being humble enough to apologize and correct your error. My water heater recently broke and my garage was full of water just before a trip. We called a few plumbing companies but neither could come in that day. A neighbor suggested calling Mike Stern Plumbing because they had had a good experience with them. Thankfully they where able to come and change our water heater THAT DAY!!! The plumber they sent( Serge) was very polite and seemed he really knew what he was doing. He came in and drained all water and changed water heater within a few hours. The company sent Greg within 24 hours, who addressed the issue in a honest, professional and understandable manner. Greg, and his crew worked diligently for 5 days and resolved the problem, which turned out to be a major undertaking. Greg and his team were extremely professional and most importantly knowledgeable. This plumber came out and snaked my main, unplugged bathroom sink and fixed toilet that was running constantly in other bathroom. Main is still plugged and toilet is still running. When I phoned Stern the NEXT day to advise him of this, his attitude was; I told you I don't guarantee anything. I told him that it was only the next day, my toilet he said he fixed was still running and the main was still backing up. He again informed me that "I told you I put on you're bill; no guarantees". I then asked, "I just want to know if you are going to make this right or not." He said; "No I am not". That was the end of that. I am a disabled senior and only receive social security and he wouldn't even offer a compromise solution. Do not use this guy, he has a nasty attitude and could care less if he has a satisfied customer or not. In other words, he really took me to the cleaners. Now I have to find a way to come up with more money to get what I paid him to fix, fixed again. My late husband was a painting contractor and he did 'what ever is took to make a customer happy' even if it came out of his pocket. But then, my husband was an HONEST and ETHICAL workman. I called them in the morning and Greg from the company showed and gave me an estimate that afternoon. He spent over an hour at my house going over what needed to be done and didn't try to sell me anything extra. He showed up the next morning with his crew and went to work with the trenches bursting. They did an amazing job replacing the clay sewer pipes and were very clean and tidy. Their work was immaculate. Needed a last minute plumber to unclog my kitchen sink. Dealt with a different plumbing company initially that showed up, but never fixed the problem but promised to come back the next morning to fix. The other plumbing company never came back to fix. Looked online for a reputable plumbing service that would be competent and reliable. Called Mike Stern, they were there, as promised, within the hour and fixed the deeply clogged sink right away. The plumber was on time, professional, and courteous enough to wear smocks in order to not get dirt on my wood floors. Even cleaned up his work area afterward with disinfectant. Useless plumbing company. Wasted two hours of my time on a busy day waiting for a previously confirmed appointment to clean the back-up drains. When the plumber failed to show up after two hours, I called the office and an "Anna" with a thick accent said she'd left me a message on my phone. She read back the number and it was completely wrong. I asked her if a plumber could get to my house within 15 minutes (their office is near my home) and Anna said that wasn't possible. My home warranty company sent out this company and a service man named Serge came out to look at my broken water heater. First Serge was late 1 hr and company doesn't bother to call and let you know either. Communication was horrible with them. So I turned off the water to the house cause the water to the water heater was flowing out and the valve was broken too. So Serge would not turn on the water to the house to find out what is going on with the water heater. He asked me where the water was coming from and then said your water heater is finished and you need a new one. Then Serge said I don't like how all this looks and everything here needs to be replaced and the home warranty only pays for the water heater and I pay for the rest. So also my water heater is outside. Then Serge said your water heater and everything else is not up to code. I called another plumber out and basically you can say that everything that Serge told me is full of shit and just wanted to make money off of me. I had used these guys before and things were ok. I had a clogged sink. He first replaced some parts put back together and snaked the sink. I found the hot water heater was dripping and called the office. They sent the guy back. My pressure was very high. He said the thermal expansion tank wasn't doing its job. Had about 130 lbs. of pressure. He said he could fix it. It would cost $400. Wow I already spent $300!! I had someone else come. They said the thermal expansion tank didn't control the pressure!! The pressure relief valve does!! Wow I almost got ripped off!! You can't trust them. I thought you could! This proves you CAN'T!!!! I do NOT recommend them!! Very disappointed to say the least. Shop around. You have to do your homework. It's really sad. What a world we live in!!!! read more
