Wife and I got the senior catch catfish. Three large crispy boneless pieces that were breaded and cooked to perfection. No soggy inside like some places. French fries appeared to have been blanched and then fried. They were crisp and well done in the middle. Friday is steak night and will give it a try next time. Great service and they even gave us a to go cup of sweet tea. BBQ smelled so good that I got a pound of sliced brisket to go. Can you say Saturday lunch!! The bbq was good but not the best. I would recommend different flavors bbq sauces to choose from. The salad dressing (ranch) was not all that great. Off the beaten path...Nice, quaint little cafe. Burger special was really good. $10.95 for burger, fries, and drink! Burger was juicy and fries were perfect!! I love the crinkled cut, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with a perfect seasoning! Hubby had the buffet and loved the salad bar, tomato relish, and broccoli cheese soup!! He went back for green beans and sautéed mushrooms!! And he said the fried chicken was "on point!" Good-juicy & spicy just like he likes it! Tea was good! Service was great! We have been to Mike's many times and it is usually OK. Yesterday afternoon around 4:30PM... not so much. Food from the steam table was cold. Not just lukewarm, but room temperature. Pork chops, mashed potatoes, as well as other things were way off temperature. The last time we were there was about a month ago and same thing, but not quite as bad as it was yesterday. THE FOOD NEEDS TO BE HOT!. If it were hot, then it would be pretty good and I probably would give it 4 stars. read more

Great relaxed Family atmosphere. Mike's has a wonderful buffet "fit for a King." Always the best fried fish (not greasy and tastes wonderful), fried steak (so tender), other meat choices, a lot of different vegetable choices, beans, corn on cob, etc., great salad bar, wonderful rolls/corn bread, and their desserts (coconut pie, my favorite) is mouth watering - a bit of heaven in the mouth. One can always order from the menu too - their great bar-B-Que sandwiches and platters, plus a lot of other choices. Always great service from friendly, helpful employees, and Mike & his wife are awesome people. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

Was working in the Houston area for 2 whole weeks and I found this little hidden gem the night before I had to leave. God, I wish that I had found it BEFORE then! Don't even bother going to any other restaurant in Dayton! They have all you could want and/or need at Mike's! Sweet tea was perfect and the buffet was "Yahoo!". Catfish was outstanding. Chicken fried steak was pretty good too. Sawmill gravy was smooth and tasty. Green beans tasted just like my momma made 'em. Mashed potatoes couldn't have been creamier or better tasting! Creamed corn was m-m-m! The staff is as sweet as their Sweet tea! This was just what is was hankerin' for some good ol' southern food! I'll miss you Mike's! read more

Left a yelp review a year or two ago, that seems to have disappeared. Still suffers the same Achilles heel. Great service, polite waitstaff, clean restaurant with good presentation. All of the vegetables are from #10 cans, potatoes are from powder and gravy is packaged mix. The ranch is from a bucket instead of made fresh.. the bacon bits are fake (baco's). The catfish is pre-battered flash frozen import. Salad boat of iceberg salad mix.. where's the good stuff? The chicken fried steak isn't bad, it's really not. Mike's burgers are classic and delicious. The buffet has lots to offer including a salad bar. Their steaks are perfect! Definitely a spot for the whole crew to fill up. The only reason I have 4 stars is because the buffet food isn't the greatest quality but there's bound to be something on there to satisfy. Also, if you're going for one of their holiday buffets, go early. We went about 1 pm for Thanksgiving dinner and they were already out of some staples like stuffing/dressing. read more

They of course offer BBQ among other things on the menu but BBQ is below average for Texas. Very mundane. Not exactly a place that you "crave" if you know what I mean. This place offers a buffet that you can always count on some fresh and clean fried catfish and a variety of steamed or fried veggies, legumes of some sort, breads, other protein options depending on the day or time, I have often found chicken fried steak but have seen other proteins at other times. They have a salad "boat" bar to visit that is always fresh and has those homemade "canned" green tomato relish I think some have called chow-chow. Their smoked bbq smell alone will bring you in to see what's cooking on that grill! Their homemade bbq sauce is excellent on the fried catfish! Read good reviews from other internet sites, decided to try this restaurant of all restaurants in Liberty n Dayton. It's located behind McDonald's, but entrance on other side. Sign in window shows all-you-can-eat BBQ on Saturdays. Walk inside, and its a treat to look at the numerous posters n signs, many look like real antiques, peanut shells on the floor, and the neat buffets. One buffet is of a boat, for salads, with a tackle box in the bow. The other buffet is of entrees. Great staff there, all friendly and smiling and putting fresh food in the buffet trays. Mike, himself, was there, and his wife, who makes all the pies except for the pecan pies. We think many of his staff are of family. Tables each had basket of peanuts in the shell, a paper towel roll on a Texas-shaped base, and condiments, including their terrific BBQ sauce. We each had the salad boat n buffet for $9 each. Main entrees on buffet were battered catfish, delicious w their great tartar sauce, country fried steak, n battered pork. I had seconds on the fish n pork, after taking off the breading. Mashed potatoes were reconstituted, not good. Green beans not good. All else great. The salad boat had a nice selection. Diners next to us had meals, and they looked very delicious. Seems like diners have been eating there for years and years. Everyone in diner friendly, and all like one big happy family. The homemade pie selection was coconut, chocolate, buttermilk, peach cobbler, and another one, all made by Valerie, Mike's wife. They looked spectacular. The pecan pie was the only one not made by Valerie. Service was excellent. We ordered a coconut pie to go. But it looked so delicious, I started in on it before we left the table, and ate about half of it, even tho I didn't think I could fit another bite into my stomach. No complaints at all!!! My kids and I checked this place out last night and my son told me he couldn't wait to go back before he went to bed. My son is picky as heck when it comes to eating at restaurants, so I had to ask him to repeat himself just to make sure. From the staff to the other patrons, everyone is so friendly. It's family-friendly, so my kids can be loud like they normally are without anyone giving me the good ol' "Can you calm your children down" look. I think I tried everything on the buffet and it was yummy. If I didn't eat it, my daughter did. Buffets make me nervous because I always wonder how long food sits there before it gets rotated, but I watched them constantly bring fresh food out while we were there. My son wasn't a huge fan of the buffet, so I ordered him a cheeseburger and he scarfed it down so quickly that you would have thought I had never fed my child before that exact moment. Being the fatty I am, I tasted it and realized why he ate it so quickly. I tried the pecan pie after my 47th round at the buffet and man oh mannnnn... To die for!!!! After I ate that piece of pie, I felt like my soul had drifted away from me and gone to Heaven. Yes, it was that good. I had someone nearby tell me the German chocolate pecan pie is even better.
