Happy to be back at Mike's Cafe! The best and (only?) vegan plant based restaurant on the island . Great options make it difficult to decide on one thing. But as I was deciding, I was sadly met with them being sold out. Keep that in mind if there's something you're eyeballing like the 'crab'. We quickly pivoted and found delicious alternatives for our dinner. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating we opted to sit outside since it was nice weather. Comfortable fun ambiance. We had the opportunity to meet Mike of Mike's Cafe. He was so kind and personable. We were visiting the island on a weekend and happened to find this gem while walking near the docks. We tried their Thai peanut bowl, the sweet potato tacos and the seasonal banana strawberry cheesecake. The food was delicious and we really couldn't tell the difference from a vegan and non-vegan version of similar dishes we've had in the past. The staff was very sweet and thoughtful. If you are visiting Friday Harbor, you have to pay a visit to Mike's Cafe & Wine Bar. The hours are kind of limited (4:30-8 when we visited), but absolutely worth checking out. They have a very friendly staff and the ambience is very inviting, with kind of a wood theme (and very cool tables). Needless to say, they have a great wine list. I just had a couple glasses of red and my partner had some sparking wine and they were all good. The real surprise was the food. We had the hummus platter and it was outstanding. Not only was the hummus absolutely delicious, but everything around it including the roasting vegetable and the pita was just perfect. read more

The live edge tables were stunning and massive. The photography near our table was beautiful and interesting. The service was outstanding. I had a question about organic wine that our server needed to check with the manager about. As she came back to explain how the wine at Mike's was chosen, Mike accompanied her as her safety net. She looked to him to ensure she understood it and had communicated accurately. He kindly added a bit more information. I got a glass of the Syrah. Winning! My sweet potato tacos were delicious--a bit smoky, robust and featured a creamy, spicy finish. I'd order these gems again and again. I felt full but still light and energetic after eating. That is important to me. My husband enjoyed his Rueben sandwich and green salad. It looked great. We also had the buffalo cauliflower. While it tasted great, I had a crispier, more blackened dish in mind. This cauliflower was steamed and then drenched in a vibrant buffalo sauce. It was good but I'd try something different next time. We were hosting a friend whose face lit up when the server described the flourless chocolate torte. I'm not a dessert eater, but the raspberry sauce was outstanding. We got here at about 4:45pm on a Saturday and were a group of 4. They weren't busy and we didn't have trouble getting seated or placing our order. Staff were friendly, but after food came they were busy doing... something except waiting tables or running food (other folks were running food). It took an incredibly long time to get the bill (over half an hour) and no service for drink refills on wine (throwing away money?) The food was the high point: we started with the hummus and the mushroom tartine apps, and the mushroom tartine was excellent. We had the thai bowl and the szechuan bowl, both with the rice noodles, and both of which were very good. The portions for the bowl entrees was very large and too much for us to eat. I was excited to find a veggie option with so many choices. As a vegetarian, I usually resign myself to a handful of options but here I was able to pick from an entire menu! I had the crab cake tacos. What a treat! Even though my dining partner isn't vegetarian, he had a nice hummus bowl/plate and liked it. There are plenty of drink options and I enjoyed a glass of sparkling rose. They have indoor seating as well as a front and back patio. The back patio was nice with lots of seating and space. If you are going to the San Juan islands, go to Mikes Cafe and wine bar! We have gotten recommendations from both travelers and long time locals for a while now and finally found our way over to Friday harbor to give it a shot and it did not disappoint. It is very apparent that time and effort goes into getting good ingredients, great staff, great presentation and great taste. Everything we had was very flavorful and almost too beautiful to eat. This place is 100% vegan but it is not even noticeable to those use to the alternative. We went with some skeptical friends who ate their words when we ordered, (in fact if we had time before they closed they were going to order more). They have vegan alternatives that are exclusive to the east cost (just going to show how far out of their way they go to get quality ingredients). They also do not just have food that happens to be vegan but great alternatives as well; I had the Ruben and it was amazing. We really enjoyed getting to chat with Mike and all their vegan items at the restaurant. Mike's was the singular healthy meal we had in Friday Harbor. I am the only vegan in the group, but they indulged me and agreed to go here. AND THEY LOVED IT. First of all, the food is great here. Second of all, our eyes were way bigger than our stomachs but everything was soooo good. Don't be afraid of everything being vegan, you won't even notice. We ordered two appetizers, the beet bowl and the hummus platter. This was a mistake because both are quite large and centered around the hummus. Even so, they were quite tasty. I would recommend ordering one or the other depending on what you prefer to compliment your hummus. For our mains, we ordered the sweet potato tacos and a fungi pizza. We have had a place on the island for years and have never been in because I was unaware children were allowed and also my husband was afraid of a "vegan" Menu. I had no clue there was an adorable patio out back and that we could bring the kids. We came in recently and it was amazing. We had the hummus antipasto app and I could Have eaten that all day long it was awesome with the roasted garlic and veggies oh heck yes! What if I told you there is no meat in this place? We walked in not knowing they only serve vegan dishes made out of all the natural ingredients from the island. The moment I realized that the place only serves vegan dishes I was both disappointed and curious. After scanning the menu a couple of times I decided to order crab tacos and burger. Wow!!! I was so glad that I gave it a shot. Both dishes were full of great flavors and tasty. I forgot that I was eating the vegan food. Honestly the reason they tasted so good is nothing to do with vegan or not but the selection of the ingredients used for these dishes. Great all vegan menu. We had a hard time picking our food. We ended up getting the pretzel appetizer, portabella burger, and the "crabby" tacos. A couple of quibbles. The food is a bit pricey, but nicer vegan food usually is and we noticed that prices were a little elevated on the island too. Unfortunately, the food didn't knock our socks off. The crabby tacos came in a semi-crisp taco shells (I think they were actually baked). I didn't like the texture. My husband's portabella burger was pretty bland. The one item that was really good were the pretzels. They were amazing. I would come back for the pretzel alone. The service was on the slow side. I don't know if it was the server or the kitchen, although I think it was more likely those amazing pretzels being baked from scratch. read more

This little vegan cafe and wine bar was our favorite restaurant on the island, and we're not even vegan! (Well, 3 of the 4 of us aren't). We ended up coming here twice during our 3-day stay. The salads were wonderful - the Self Love salad was our favorite, but the Super Salad was really good, too. Tried the sweet potato tacos and "crabby" tacos - the sweet potato w/ black beans was so flavorful and tasty, especially the creamy sauces. The hummus platter was one of the best we've ever had, and the Szechuan bowl over rice noodles was spicy deliciousness. Check out the lovely back patio. They have some great wines, but the watermelon w/ ginger drink is really refreshing on a hot day. Big thumbs up! read more

I'm amazed by how delicious this vegan restaurant is! Honestly a hidden gem, if I lived in SJI I would come here all the time. We came here super hungry after ferry docked at 3pm, and was welcomed by cheery picnic tables at the back of Mike's Cafe. The Pepperoni Pizza can hot out off the oven and while it's no NYC pizza, it certainly has its own charm! Crispy but chewy dough with all the vegan cheese and pepperoni that tasted just as good as non-vegan versions. If vegan food was like this everywhere, I wouldn't mind turning vegan! Eggplant Lasagna was a bit pricier but a great choice as an entree - my family absolutely loved it. Super fresh tomatoes adding to that umami flavor! Superfood salad was heavy on the dressing - my fault, should've asked for it on the side... but loved the mix of ingredients! The vegan chicken was actually really delicious, I might like it even more than some real roasted chicken - it wasn't dry at all, and shredded into small crispy bites. This is def something I would eat on a regular basis to try to be healthy. read more

I have zero affiliation to the establishment or the owner. My girlfriend and I wondered in randomly. Very happy to have found this place. I am a hobbyist woodworker, welder and metallurgist. The decor in this place spoke to me in a way I cannot describe. The combination of burrowed live edge maple and custom crafted metal work was awesome to behold. Even if the food sucked, this place would be worth going to! But then we ordered. We ordered a mushroom platter which seemed a bit pricey at first but was worth every penny once it hit my taste buds. Very generous portion of curated mushrooms mixed in the perfect blend of oils and spices with cashew cheese and a layered pastry to serve as a delivery device. Bottle prices are reasonable and the selection is worth the visit alone. The food menu is surprisingly diverse and I definitely want to check out one of their pizzas next time. This place will definitely be on the list of places to visit every time I'm in Friday Harbor. read more

We were here on the island in 2015 and never tried this place out. We only had several days here. This time we have more time. Plus we read that they are a vegan place. Our daughter is a 16 year old vegan never having the opportunity to get anything but French fries. My wife and I love wine. We thought it would be a good mix.it was very cold outside but we ate there anyway. The service was nice, and the guy playing instrumental music was good. Now the food was absolutely amazing. I had the fiesta salad with vegan chicken, wife had tacos with vegan crab my meat, and my other kids had other vegan options. Everyone loved their food. The wine was good. I had mikes Cab Franc from his winery. It was terrific. Even if you're not vegan give it a chance. I seen a couple next to us sit down look at the menu and provide a tip to the guy performing and the waitress and left. He and his wife didn't give it a chance. We have been here 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2019. This place is very awesome. The best Vegan place that I've ever ate at. read more

Really really good vegan food at a very low price considering the island setting. On the next trip any meal not prepared in the hotel room will be eaten here. Went to another restaurant and was overcharged for really bland, mediocre food that we didn't finish the night before. Mike's was the culinary savior of the island. Take-out order review! My sister and I ordered take-out to take on the ferry back to Anacortes. Our order of 2 sandwiches was ready in 20 mins - fantastic! We split a Reuben and the Portobella Po Boy. Both were amazing! Though the Po Boy tasted on the salty side after a few bites. We both agreed that we'd order both items again. Green salad side was great - raspberry vinaigrette, sunflower seeds, and golden cherry tomatoes over mixed greens. Can't wait to visit again and dine in this time! read more

This is a very cute spot and I appreciate its dedication to vegan food. I got the Reuben with a side of potato salad. Both were only ok and the price was very steep. My glass of wine was quite delicious. My biggest problem was the owner created an uncomfortable atmosphere. He was loudly lecturing the people next to me on wine and a variety of topics in a condescending way. And I heard him address his (adult) staff as "girls." Inappropriate. You can be both knowledgeable and in a position of authority while also being kind and humble. The staff that served me were lovely and super helpful. This is our 3rd visit in the 3 days we were in island. Mike and his team doesn't disappoint. We were greeted by Madeline who immediately remembered us from the night before and directed us to the bar area. Today, being it was a cold, rainy day, we felt soup and sandwich would be appropriate. So, we had a cup of the minestrone soup and shared the Island Burger made with Beyond Meat Burger, complete with spicy mustard, mayo, avocado,tomato, onion and sautéed mushrooms. Love this restaurant! Ok, so I'm not a vegan and I love all types of food. But I had heard this vegan restaurant was a good place to eat so we decided to try it. First it's a cute cottage style building which looks so inviting. Upon entering, you are greeted by friendly employees. Forest greeted us and was our server. He was friendly , helpful and very attentive without being intrusive. We ordered the Thai rice noodle bowl, a "cheese" pizza, the crabby tacos and the Mac n' "cheese". I had to keep reminding myself that there weren't any real dairy products or meat products on our plates. So yummy I could turn vegan. We ordered a bottle of wine which turned out not to be available but no worries. They upgraded us to a more expensive wine but at the price of the one we originally selected. For dessert, 4 of us split a chocolate moose. So crazy good! I will most definitely be back to sample more of their dishes. read more

Surprised to find a legit vegan restaurant here on the island. Plenty of good options here that will satisfy both vegans and non-vegans. Atmosphere is very nice, especially when eating outside. Took off a star for service. It's very slow and borderline inattentive. I can't imagine how bad it'd be on a busy night. Ordered the "philly cheese steak" mushroom sandwich, which was really good. The dairy free cheese was very convincing. Pesto pizza was very delish. The crust was quite good. It's a bit pricey, even considering we're on an island but the food is very good. I was in town last weekend for the San Juan Half Marathon and was really surprised to read about an excellent vegan restaurant in Friday Harbor. I've been vegan for over a decade and used to come to the island as a child every summer and never would've guessed Friday Harbor would've been host to some of the best vegan food in the State of Washington! Wow! I was a hungry little runner and I'd just burned 1300+ calories during the race, so I had the mac 'n cheese as an appetizer as well as the jackfruit burger with potatoes for my main dish. Everything was good. The mac 'n cheese is made out of a combo of nooch and cashew cheese sauce, with a crusty topping. Non-vegans shouldn't expect it to be an exact facsimile of dairy mac 'n cheese, though, or you will be disappointed. I would say that I've had better vegan mac 'n cheeses, but this one was nice enough and definitely satisfied my cravings. The jackfruit burger was absolutely amazing, on a soft pretzel bun with delicious crunchy pickles and a really nice flavor. If you're a meat-eater who's squeamish about eating anything tofu-ish or "mock meat," I strongly advise you to try jackfruit instead, because it tastes nothing like tofu or mock meat. It's just a tender mild-tasting fruit that, when cooked and seasoned, comes out tasting a bit like a mild pulled pork. Very satisfying. The roast potatoes that came with the burger were just OK, a bit less flavour than I would've liked. No real "wow" factor there. The gentleman next to me had the kale and cream soup and reported that it was pretty good. The place was busy for a weekend evening and since I was flying solo I was seated at the bar, which was fine. Service was a bit slow but certainly attentive -- Mike himself kept coming by to chat to people and make sure we had everything we needed. What a friendly, great guy and I'm so glad he opened this restaurant on the island. I'll be back for sure to try everything else on the menu! read more

I wish this cafe was in my town because I'd be there every week! I've never been to a vegan place quite like this. The food is amazing! It even looks like real meat. We got the cheese plate, Cajun tacos, jackfruit tacos and mike's island burger. Everything was amazing! My husband who hates eating vegan, absolutely loved it. They're super friendly and accommodating. I was worried about getting the cheese platter because I haven't found any good vegan cheese but they gave me more than enough for a sample and it did not disappoint! Great customer service and food! We stopped in for dinner one fairly busy weekend while staying in Friday Harbor at the Friday Harbor Suites. I am not vegetarian, but my wife and I do try to eat less meat than other ingredients. We also try to go for more whole foods and less processed, when possible. Mike's was a good place to go, I ended up loving the sweet potato tacos. The Szechwan Sizzle with added chicken over quinoa was pricey, over $20, and very spicy. I struggled with that - though I am admittedly a lightweight when it comes to spice. I would have preferred a mix of quinoa and rice and a little less spice to let the other ingredients speak for themselves a bit. Our server was great and had fun recommendations for other things to see and do in Friday Harbor. We would visit again, if we are ever again in FH. read more

Not sure why we waited so long to come here. We came here for dinner after my husband and I got married last night. It was absolutely amazing! Our waitress was wonderful and Mike the owner is the best! We had the Mac and Cheez appetizer. I had everyone's Favorite BLTA, my husband had the Thai Noodle Bowl, my daughter had the Roasted Veggie Pizza. Everything was soooo good and on point from presentation to flavor!! For desert we had the Chocolate cake with raspberry drizzle and crumbles w/ small slices of apple on the side. To top it if Mike gifted us a bottle of champagne!! If you haven't been here, you are missing out for sure!! This by far is our favorite place on the island now. It fits our our specific food lifestyle. read more
