We decided to go here for lunch (no other options really available), and we are so glad we did! Staff was amazing. Music was good and not too loud. We will be returning to try their dinner menu. We got to meet the chef and he signed his Ramen cookbook for us. We loved that we could take our pup with us (he stays in his stroller the entire time). Could be a good place but at this point would not go back or recommend. Our server was friendly but did not check on us after being served. I had to catch her attention to ask for dessert. The total cost of our meal (without alcohol), was not the second issue. The two main entrees we ordered were. Two couples each split a meal because the description we were given was that it was a large portion. We and the other couple each ordered the $36 scallop and noodle meal. I can't remember the name of it but I believe it was the most expensive on the menu, maybe. I will say the restaurant was nice enough to split them ahead of time. However, our plates had the following... mine with two scallops and some noodles, my wife's with one scallop and some noodles. Our two friends received the same accordingly. The taste was wonderful but that meant a $36 entree had three scallops and not a lot of noodles; that is it. Perhaps I expect more than I should but I am not one to shy away from an expensive meal now and again. This I would expect from a high end restaurant but this is not a high end restaurant. Overall: Good tasting Poor follow up from waitress Way too much money for what you receive (especially this entree) ...doesn't matter who you are. Yummy food, good service, and cozy small town feel! My tempura halibut was gluten free and deliciously flaky inside - and as a big fan of fries I have to say these were perfect! My mom had the karaage aioli pizza (not pictured because I was too engaged with my own dish) and said it was good! Our server was personable, though my favorite part of the experience was overhearing neighbors visiting each other's tables to chat about gardens and family updates. The high number on our bill surprised us, though that is our fault as we did not compare prices when ordering fries as an appetizer, our entrees, and a glass of wine each. *Surprising island gem* We chose to check out the Galley from reviews and limited options for restaurants on our overnight stay on Lopez island. It was a Friday night at 7pm and we walked into an empty restaurant. They have an excellent view of the water and sunset backdrop led us to give it a shot. The service always swift as you would expect and server was very friendly, she gave us some highlights of specials and we decided on the fish and chips and mango salsa fish tacos. The food came out quickly and was large portions. The fish was light and crispy and very delicious! The mango tacos were equally tantalizing, with a local chipotle sauce that was amazing. We finished it off with sharing a brownie sundae and after sitting for a bit strolled our to enjoy the perfectly timed sunset. I hear they have great breakfast so we will likely be back in the morning as we are confident that it will be as good as what we had there tonight. read more

While visiting Lopez for our monthly hikes a group of four stopped in here to grab a quick bite to eat. Free parking in a private lot. Discover is an accepted form of payment. Tabs are easily split. My wife ordered a Biscuits & Gravy breakfast plate: buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy and hashbrowns and two eggs any style.She chose the hashbrowns over the toast. Her choice of meat was bacon. The portions are huge and she was unable to finish her complete meal. I chose a lunch plate of a BLT for $9.99. My bread choice was wheat and the sandwich was piled high with thick bacon, crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes and a layer of mayonnaise. Instead of fries I chose the soup of the day which happened to be Cream of Asparagus. A cup of pure goodness: hot, creamy with nice chunks of asparagus. Our beverage choices were pints of Mac & Jack and Manny's for $5 each. Staff is friendly and accommodating. Decor is old and furniture is mis-matched but I think it just adds to the charm. This was our first time at Lopez Island so didn't know the area very well and to be honest, didn't seem like there were a lot of places to choose from. We came here since our kayak tour guide recommended it to us. We ordered the crab wontons as an appetizer and shared the rockfish stuffed with crab and shrimp accompanied with rice and grilled vegetables. Everything was tasty. The food looked sooo good, colourful with large portions, but not of that matters when the food does not taste good. I had the beef chimichanga With was 90% refried beans and 10% hamburger meat. The beans on the side seemed to have been microwaved or left under a heat lamp for a while with a layer of crust, and the rice was warm and lumpy, like it had been refrigerated then microwaved. The rest of my party was also not impressed. The fish mango tacos were mainly white rice with bland fish and unripe mango. All over priced, not good. Won't be back. We came here for an early dinner as there aren't many options for a Tuesday dinner on the island. We chose this restaurant based off a good review for the clam chowder. We ended up ordering calamari, clam chowder, and 2 orders of fish. The calamari was so yummy, large pieces instead of the smaller rings I'm used to. The clam chowder was amazing, everything I wanted it to be. The fish was very light in flavor, the Mac N Jack breading was delicious, but the tartar sauce it was so great! The lady boxed our leftovers and I was so sad to see just fish no tartar sauce, but that's ok. The fish portions are huge btw, they come in a 4 piece and 6 piece. Very few restaurants in lopez island. We visited here during our family trip and found this place at night. Bar area was loud, seemed like someone was having bday party. That was fine but the food came out late. Food was good. Service was not the best. They forgot my fettuccine until everyone else finished their meal. We stopped in here after a recommendation from the guides of a kayak tour we took on Lopez. The restaurant featured a bit of a mixed menu with very Americana fare and Mexican food. In hindsight, I wish I'd tried some of the Mexican items. Well, next time. My wife had a grilled chicken sandwich, which came with bacon and cheese and the usual rabbit food. She also got some guacamole on the side to slather on her sandwich and opted for the sweet potato fries. The fries were very meh, but the guacamole is the reason I want to try some of the Mexican food next time. It was one of the best guacs I've ever had. I had the black and bleu burger, a beef patty with Caribbean and Cajun spices and with melted Gorgonzola on top. It was absolutely delicious. The regular fries I had with it were far superior to the sweet potato fries that sat across the table from me. They had a great wine selection, and we enjoyed some of the wine from Lopez Island's winery. It was comfortable, service was fine, and we would go again if in the area, but again, I think I'll get a chimichanga next time. read more

We were cycling on Lopez and checked yelp for a suggestion as where to have lunch. When we got to The Galley we were bit put off by the exterior. It was a quiet day and there were only 2 other people in the restaurant... Which we took as not a good sign. We trusted the Yelp reviews and thought we'd give it a try. We had a fabulous meal! I had a really great mushroom swiss burger and my wife had really good home made black bean burger. Both came with a choice of soup, salad, fries, etc. I had the clam chowder and OMG it was by far the best I've ever had. My wife agreed and we had a 2nd bowl of it. Server was very friendly, food was great and reasonably priced. Can't ask for more! read more

Inconsistency is the word that best describes the service in this place. We've had very good meals with good service and adequate meals with adequate service. We visit Lopez 2 or 3 times a year and usually frequent this place because the meals and service are typically pretty good. What drives this review is the last visit where we had poor service and we never were served our meals. Sunday, October 8, 11:50 am, we decided on the Galley for lunch. We seated ourselves after the waitress bussed the table from the previous diners. There was no utinsils so the waitress grabbed some from another table that was dirty and had not been cleared. The silverware appeared to be unused but it was from a dirty table - GROSS! (Isn't this a health code violation?) The waitress took our drink orders and told us that she was a local on the island and didn't really care for her job and that she was so busy because she was training the new girl even through she was fairly new herself. She was only working to support her child. OK, thanks for sharing... Since our utinsils were from a dirty table, we played it safe by ordering a couple of hamburgers so we could just eat with our hands. 20 minutes pass, so we ask for a refill on our sodas. We also asked the waitress to check the status of our burgers. She tells us that our order will be up shortly. 10 more minutes pass and our waitress takes a 10 minute smoke break. When she gets back, we ask her again about our order. She never comes back to let us know the status. At 12:45, we figured that we weren't going to get our lunch, so we leave. As we walk out, the waitress looks at us and tells us to have a nice day! Really? We waited nearly an hour for a couple of hamburgers!!! I guess good help is hard to find on the island. read more

We saw a jam packed parking lot at this humble looking waterfront restaurant and thought it'd be a good spot for dinner and a view. Had no idea we'd stumbled onto one of the best Ribeye steak we've ever had. The sides were the usual baked potato, steamed veggies, etc - nothing extraordinary. However the Ribeye was a very high quality cut, cooked to perfection. Nice sear, lightly seasoned so as not to over power the great natural flavor. The steak was served with an excellent red wine and peppercorn sauce that was out of this world. Also tried the jumbo prawn linguini which was very good in its own right. A bit heavy handed on the garlic, but still would order it again without hesitation. Next time you visit Lopez Island, make sure you stop here! read more

I'm a little torn about the 4 stars. We were here a few days after Christmas when every other restaurant on the island was shut down for the winter. The Galley is the only show in town for a meal. They were out of a lot of things on the menu, and of course they were out of the only thing I wanted - Manila Clams. They said their shipment was coming tomorrow (seemed like a convenient answer). I mean, yes, it is the off season, but it was pretty busy because no where else was open and people live there and visitors are still coming, so you would think they'd plan more efficiently. So I really wanted to give 3 stars. But - service was okay and what I ended up getting - the Rockfish fish and chips - was pretty good and it was a big portion, decently priced. My husband got calamari and it was okay. This was my first time to Lopez and I'm not sure if I'll be back anytime soon. If I do, I'd like to try other restaurants in the town. The Galley was pretty divey, but comfortable and for a large party, service was pretty good. If they are stocked up, it's a good place to eat. read more

When the boyfriend ordered the sweet potato fries to go with his cajun-spiced burger, the young couple at the table next to us applauded his choice, saying the fries were awesome. I was slightly bummed that my fish and chips came with regular fries. But man, did we ever prefer those regular fries. The sweet potato fries were good but the regular fries were a-may-zing. Crisp and hot on the outside (skins still on, not dripping with oil, not seasoned so you can DIY it) and steamy, soft, and perfect on the inside. We actually wound up craving more later. The burger, by the way, packed a heck of a punch with the spice and was super flavorful. The fish came out steaming hot and perfect. The side coleslaw? That's the first time I ever enjoyed coleslaw. Only bummer - wish their tartar sauce had more dill pickle in it, but that's a personal preference. No biggie, the fries were awesome enough to make me forget about the dill pickle. read more

I was on Lopez Island in February, got there about 8 on a Sunday night. I thought for sure the whole island would be shut down. But lo and behold, like a lighthouse signaling a lonely ship, neon lights flowed out from The Galley onto a parking lot full of cars. I happily strolled inside and found the place to be packed! It turned out that there had a been a charity fundraising golf tournament that day, The Soggy Bottom, so the place was filled with locals, all of whom seemed to be in a great mood. And even though I was a foreigner (a tourist from America!), everyone was friendly and welcoming. I had a great conversation with Jimmy, a local who had lived in Portland at one time. He explained to me how although the Sheriff (who was in the bar at the time) was a great guy we shouldn't offer him a tok. Jimmy, thanks for the good conversation! Hope to see you next time. A former logger and I had a nice time talking. He explained to me everything that was wrong with the logging industry, the environmental movement, and all the government land-use agencies. Apparently sometime during our conversation, he decided we were both foresters. Not sure how that happened, but if he's reading, to him I say with upraised fist, "From one forester to another!" Okay, so you had to be there... The bartender was wearing a shirt advertising one of my favorite local bands, Hillstomp. When I mentioned that she said, "I know, you told me that last summer at the farmer's market." Which, indeed I had. I was surprised that she remembered, and even more surprised when she remembered what I liked to drink from the summer before as well. She was a great bartender. She was quick and efficient but still friendly and willing to take a few moments to chat when she could. Also, she was very petite, but had a big presence. It was very entertaining watching her all but manhandle a bunch of drunk men, most of whom were twice her size and old enough to be her father (or grandfather). The sheriff may have been in the room, but there was no question who was The Law in that bar! Great bartender. That was my fourth time there, and every time I've had a good time. Friendly locals, great food, cheap drinks, and great service. And really excellent clam chowder. Everything you need. I'll see you there next time I'm on the island! read more

I'd give ZERO stars if I could. We wanted breakfast after our ferry ride before a kayaking adventure so we stumbled upon Galley. We arrived around 10am and thought we be fed, full and happy before our noon adventure....well, that wasn't the case. Granted there were other customers but only one waiter running around like a basketcase. We needed to leave at 11:45am to get to the beach and our food still hadn't arrived, mind you, we were there for an hour and 45 mintues! We paid before our meal arrived and requested they package our food to go. What we though would be an enjoyable and relaxing breakfast turned into a very frustrating and upsetting morning. We ended up eating our food while driving and rushing to our kayaking trip. Oh, and it took about 30 minutes to get water! AWFUL SERVICE, USE YOUR TIME TO ENJOY ANOTHER PLACE!!! read more

What a fun place to come across during a bike ride around the Island! Next time I come to the Island, I will make SURE a stop at the Galley will be on our agenda. The service (we sat in the lounge) was great. The gal helping us couldn't have been nicer or sweeter! The cocktails were good and came fast. The food was great too! Do yourself a favor and order the Onion Rings. BEST ONION RINGS EVER! I had the french dip which was so big I couldn't finish it! My husband had the cheese steak and he said it was also delicious!! Some folks were taking their drinks to the patio which had a beautiful view of the water. Next time we'll have to do that! There was plenty of room for us to lock up our bikes as well - though I'm not sure we really had to lock them up. Being the city folk we are, we did more out of habit then necessity. read more

Were it not for the french fries, which were good, this would be a 1 star review due to the lack of cleanliness, the tattered decor, the mostly bad food, and the spotty and at times rude service. After asking those at the other 2 tables in the bar area, I asked whether a certain sporting event could be put on the tv. The bartender/server seemed fine with doing so only the loudly and repeatedly complain about the tv selection later to another patron sitting at the bar (who arrived later). She also exasperatedly asked a walk-in party of 6 whether they had reservations when we were, at the time, the only party in the bar, and it was 3 pm on Saturday ... There were items missing from my order ... I like casual (even somewhat shabby) decor, but the first thing you see when approaching the bar area is a row of bar stools with blown-out vinyl seats ... upon entering the bar you'll step onto this vinyl mat that's also coming apart ... the towel with which our table was wiped down was dirty and left a film and a somewhat pungent smell. It's a place where, if a fry fell off the plate ... I wouldn't eat it. My nachos were greasy and bland. They do put cheese on all layers of the chips, which is nice and the cheese is tasty. The ground beef was overcooked and had no seasoning (not even salt). They left off my onions and added tomatoes. The salsa I asked for on the side was missing. The red salsa is bland. The small side of guac (ordered separately) was not fresh or house-made. The meat on my husband's french dip was dry and overcooked -- like they reheated it in a microwave before serving it. The jus tasted like a salt lick. Bread was nothing special. Fries with the sandwich were good -- slight outer crisp and soft inside. We hadn't eaten here in years and gave it a try on the suggestion of a friend -- a mistake. We won't be back. I'd rather eat at Haven Kitchen and Bar or even the Islander (though their food has gone downhill over the past year or so) for casual or get take out from Vitas. read more

I grew up getting a big, old fashioned, greasy burger from the Galley but the restaurant has changed hands at some point. Where is the hamburger lamp of yore?? The clam/mussels appetizer was excellent but the other food I ordered the two nights we ate there was only so-so compared to the price. The halibut tacos weren't bad but for the money they weren't that special. The portabella mushroom linguine was really bland and had very little portabella in it. It was a thorough disappointment. If the food had a little more pizzaz or the prices were lower I'd rate The Galley higher but you don't seem to get what you pay for here. The service, however, was excellent. This is hands-down the weirdest place I've ever been. Its only saving grace are the servers, which were really fantastic and friendly. The food though - well, after perusing the menu and looking around the restaurant filled with mismatched 1970's dinettes, I opted against anything in the $15-$20 range and went with a burger. This decision was confirmed when the server brought our wonton appetizer and said it was "fresh made a few hours ago." My burger was quite good however and I was glad I didn't try to fancy it up at this place. The husband liked his oysters but there was a pool of grease on his plate afterwards. Not a bad place if you don't mind a quirky experience, and I did appreciate the story printed on the menu, but if you're expecting a romantic candlelit dinner for two you won't find it here. read more

Had Dinner last night. I had Ribeye Steak. Was fantastic. Came with a peppercorn and brown wine sauce. Delicious. Steak was cooked perfectly. I ordered the Roasted potatoes. These were the best I've ever had. They were lightly coated with a flavorful seasoning and oven baked to a golden brown. Just magnificent. My wife had the prawns and linguini. Again an absolute smash. Stopped in for lunch today. I had the Clam Chowder. Amazing. Nice and rich and thick! (See photo). Had nice chunks of local clams and potatoes and celery. Yum. The homemade buttermilk biscuits on the menu caught my eye, and I had to try the biscuits and gravy for a late brunch. Honestly THE best B-n-G I have ever tasted! The decor is on the hideous side & it smells like stale smoke (do you really want to feel like you're at a dive bar when you're eating a $15-20 plate), but the food is pretty good and there is a fantastic view of the harbor. I had the grilled portobella mushroom salad, which was really good. The greens were fresh, the roasted peppers flavorful, and there was an ample spread of sharp gorgonzola & finly chopped walnuts on top so every bite had something delicious. The dressing for the salad was also quite good - mildly balsamic, very herby. This is a great vegetarian choice. My boyfriend had the fish & chips. I can't speak much to the fish, except that it seemed like a really small serving for the price. The french fries are really really good - crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and they still taste like potatoes. The coleslaw is dressed with a creamy, pleasingly lemon dressing. read more

Homemade chips and sweet potato fries are the best. One of the better tarter sauces around. Better now than the Islander restaurant just down the road. Two thumbs up! read more
