This was my first time here per recommendation from a friend- I got the chicken shawarma wrap with everything. Service was fast and friendly and the wrap was grilled and absolutely delicious! A lot of the garlic white sauce and oh so good- glad I tried this place in addition to my usual East Side Pockets- will definitely be back! I've been here years ago but tried again based on reccomendations from a friend. The chicken shawarma from here leans hard towards the "street food" feel. Crispy griddled pita, French fries added into the wrap (optional), creamy and fatty sauces and spreads added to the wrap.. It was all good and tasty. For me, it lacked freshness and to be honest, it didn't have as much chicken as I expected it would, plus, the vegetables didn't have a ton of flavor. I liked it, but I didn't enjoy this as much as some other options on the same street. That said, I'd likely come back with some friends if they insist- I'd just get something that is dissimilar to something I can order at east side pockets. The service was a bit on the slow side, but I think they take a lot of to-go orders here. So it's understandable, even though it was at 9pm. Mike's Calzones is a quaint little shop on Thayer St, basically on Brown University campus, serving calzones and middle eastern fare. The calzones are excellent and quite large for the price. The buffalo chicken one is a standout. Hoever, the star of the show here I think is the chicken shawarma wrap. It is hands down the best shawarma I have had in Providence. Get it with fries in the wrap, trust me. I usually just get take out but the couple of times I have eaten there, the staff has been great and friendly. First time i went to Mike was with q friend who is a regular; she raved about the shawarma. I was on a diet and only had a salad. The salad was great! With grilled chicken and tons of fixings. I thought this place was Italian and would never have dreamed they could get this middle eastern delicacy so right...and ironically when the middle eastern restaurant nearby doesn't sell them (they have the best falafel though, arabic style). I'm only here in Providence for a couple of weeks but I've already eaten here twice! The first time I ordered the chicken shawarma salad--super fresh romaine lettuce as a base with cucumbers, olives, feta, tomato, cucumbers, banana peppers, pickles, onions, green peppers, a heaping mound of chicken shawarma with tahini sauce and garlic sauce. It was giant and delicious! I somehow managed to eat in all, but it can easily be made two meals if you have any self-control. It was good enough that I tried the beef shawarma salad the second time. The beef was flavorful too, shaved thinly and crisp and warm (I might give a slight edge to the beef over the chicken but you can't go wrong). I did make this two servings but I'll admit that the salad wasn't as fresh as the first time. The lettuce was a bit old (reddish edges) and some of the green pepper strips were old too. The price is pretty good though, and it's nice to get an interesting salad for a meal. Service is fast and staff are friendly. Definitely a casual environment so I've only gotten takeout. read more

Mikes calzone near brown university is a tiny, unassuming eatery that offers many calzone options and shawarma. Im glad I assumed, because although the food is not pretty, it's delicious, piping hot and good quality. As a native NYer, I take my pizza/calzones very seriously. That being said- I was skeptical of this college joint. However, I was pleasantly surprised by what I was served. My boyfriend and I ordered a cheese and pepperoni calzone with a chicken Cesar salad. The salad came first. The dressing was a little too thick for my liking, but the salad as a whole was fantastic. The chicken was so moist and tender that it fell apart while I was cutting it. There was plenty of parm cheese and we finished the entire thing. The calzone was sooo good. I'm used to a little ricotta in mine but this place doesn't do that. It's just loads of mozzarella cheese in a crispy crust with the pepperoni. I can't recommend this combo enough. If you find yourself in providence, check this place out! You will not be disappointed. Been craving shawarma for so long so we had to stop in and try them here. This place has about 6 people eating in so it seemed like a good place to try. I think there are 2 tables in the front and I think 3 pizzeria style booths. Son ordered mozzarella sticks. I know you can't really mess these up but he literally killed them right away. He claims they were the best he's had. The cheese really did have a ton of pull when he took a bite of it. Came with marinara sauce. It was kinda of chunky but ok. Chicken shawarma plate $14 came with a small side salad with banana peppers, olives, cucumbers, tomatoes and some other veggies. Also came with nicely seasoned fries. Those kinds are my favorite. It's beautifully toasted, has a unique sauce that I can't find anywhere else, and is generously loaded with fresh vegetables, french fries, and tender chicken thighs. Each bite is composed of a fully optimized balanced combination such that after you swallow it, you just crave the next bite until you realize you've finished the entire shawarma and wallow in temporary woe, only then to realize that you've just had the best dang shawarma on college hill. The store is small, but that small deli store feels is exactly what you want when eating shawarma like this. The same guys have been running the shop for a while, and they're always warm and on point with service: even with a wait, you'll get your shawarma between 3-5 minutes. The chicken was well seasoned and not dry at all. I did think the hot sauce, chicken, tahini, and fries did not mix well, only because it all became mushy and soggy.
