Amazing staff, super friendly and helpful when ordering for the first time. It reminds me of a deli that I used to go to in Boston where they make you feel at home. The Monte Cristo panini was fresh off the press, and tasted great. The flavors blended very well together and the sauce that was on it wasn't overbearing. I just wish they had public restrooms since it can get a little messy after eating but at least they have a cool little mezzanine for dining. read more

This is a full grocery store and deli, featuring a hot and cold salad bar, coffee and international foods. Free Wi-Fi. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Open every day. I love that they open early and close late...you can get pretty much any grocery item, food item or frozen item....the prices are a bit higher than a regular grocery store but you pay for the convenience of getting something quickly if you are in downtown. The hot bar features vegetables, meats, carbs, etc...you can make a plate and use it for a meal or as a side. The fresh to order sandwiches are also very good. Love this shop in downtown Providence, it's located right across the street from PPAC. They have a hot bar with various foods including rice, chicken, beef, pork, fish, veggies and fruits! They change the menu daily and have a sandwich bar, that is made to order. The staff are always welcoming and friendly!! Serendipity Gourmet is the bodega-style deli I've been looking for forever in Providence. Nothing better than a NYC bodega vibe, and this is kind of just the bigger version of it. I still need to try a bacon egg and cheese with salt pepper and ketchup from here though. I love their chicken cutlet special, grand canyon, and the roast beef sandwich is awesome too. The bread is always fresh and I honestly just look forward to seeing my man Carlos behind the counter - he makes my day every day I come here for a work lunch. I brought a few coworkers recently to try the place and started a movement. Overall, the sandwiches I've tried are good (great for the price and relative to other downtown options) but nothing to write home about. It just works. What really elevates the place is the hot bar (which seems amazing, idk why I've never tried it) and selection of international foods. I think the owners are Korean and there are lots of Asian ingredients I struggle to find in other places that I always end up walking out with as I roam the store waiting for my sandwich. read more

cashier was helpful and really friendly Lindsay same with deli guy Josh but unfortunately.There's a guy who works at the deli who ignores customers. He always sees me waiting to order and walks by and ignores me. If he has a problem talking to customers, he shouldn't work at customer service after that, the store is great. I had so looked forward to trying their sandwiches on their gluten free bread. I've stared working a couple blocks away and was looking forward to becoming a regular. I went in and they had just run out of gluten free bread. Disappointing. I went to the hot bar. Everything looked very sad, but there were things I could eat, even though pretty dried out. I picked up a small container of pre packaged fruit and got a couple small (very small) items off the hot bar to tie me over. As I was selecting my hot bar items one of the staff walked up with a trash can and started dumping the food in the trash. Nothing makes one feel better than to take a small scoop of an item and as soon as I lay the spoon down the worker grabs the pan and dumps it in the trash. I mentioned to the cashier the food was pretty dried out but I needed something since they were out of the bread. The cashier was watching their colleague dump the food. Just the small fruit and the small amount of dried up food $18 and change. No drink, No offer of a discount, nothing. The cashier just looked bored and uninterested. There was still over an hour before the store closed. The food seemed it was probably good, if fresh. These people just wanted to max out the purchase rather than gain a regular. Came in everyday for a delicious sub. I got the Cuban sub I've been to Florida where they have them in every street and they taste as delicious. Then I would go around the back go down one floor and get a custom drink loved getting different flavored lemonades from all over the world. Service was prompt and excellent each time I went. What a sweet store. It was not what I expected when I just randomly tried out this store in downtown Providence as part of a local Adventure challenge. I have been by the store previously because I attend PPAC regularly but I really didn't know what they were selling. So we went in and found what used to be a buffet where you could help yourself to different prepared foods but was no longer because of covid. They had a full Deli they had prepared foods they had toilet paper and canned goods and frozen foods and candies and just about anything you could imagine. It was really a fun experience to just go through and actually see things that were from other countries like candies and grocery products. I didn't buy any of those because we were there so Mike could get lunch and he did get a sandwich. He got a turkey Reuben. He said it really didn't have a lot of flavor but when you take the corned beef or pastrami out of a reuben and replace it with turkey I don't think you should expect much. I didn't get anything because I am dieting and the salads that they had were prepared salads that were very boring. They did not make salads to order which was disappointing because a lot of their foods looked good. So it was a very fun experience with charming people who work there and a very clean environment. read more

I love visiting Serendipity Gourmet when I am in Providence. If you want to pick up a quick lunch or dinner, this is the place. The selection on the hot bar and salad bar is always excellent, and the quality of the food is high. They charge by the pound, and if you're smart, you can end up with quite a bit of food for a decent price. read more

Coming out of Yelp hiatus to talk about Serendipity. I work around the corner and eat there a lot. Since changing hands, the food bar has greatly improved, with more variation and more selections. They've still kept some of my old favorites, though, like the hot marinated mushrooms and the watercress salad with nuts and fruit. They've also got all of the same selection of snacks, drinks, and go-withs to your meal, including lots of natural and imported/international selections. It's a great way to get a meal on the go that contains your healthy servings of fruits and vegetables. read more

Serendipity Gourmet took over from Gourmet Heaven some months ago. My colleagues walked me down do SG because they were excited about the salad bar operation, where you fill up a container and pay by the pound. Since a pound of rice costs the same as a pound of roast beef, the main strategy is to choose foods with a high protein/weight ratio. I did that. The quality was OK, but there's nothing to rave about. I was surprised that there are no pitchers of tap water for eat-in diners. If you want water to go with your meal, you need to pay for a bottle ($1 + tax). SG appears to be one of the better options in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't call it a destination. read more

It feels kind of strange writing a review for a place like serendipity, which is the gold standard of go-to lunch places in downcity. The food bar is excellent, high quality and fresh. An ever better deal are the sandwiches, which are large and very reasonably priced. There is a line at peak times and there's not much place to stand, but it's fun to browse the random korean and european imported sweets they carry. Two hidden things newbies might not notice: soup tucked to the left of the door, and a small seating area up a short flight of stairs in the back. read more

Staying at the Biltmore and wanted to get a few basics: cream, yogurt, sparkling water, cottage cheese. The cream was $7.99 for a quart! There wasn't a pint sized cream. Yogurt was almost $2 each. Sparkling water $3 for a liter. No cottage cheese. The buffet looked good but I wasn't looking for a meal. Next time I'll walk to Whole Foods. read more

Great place! Variety of items is unbelievable...an international selection! And the hot and cold salad bar has such great options. The only mention I'd like to make is the service at the register...we shopped there several times during our stay and alternated between two very tepid cashiers each time. Not rude at all, but just not very interactive and friendly like I've come to expect in Providence...it won't stop us from returning when we come back to PVD next week, but it's an off-putting end to an otherwise brilliant time. read more

Serendipity is absolutely awesome!! Located in downcity and a few blocks away from providence arts center, the discovery of this place for me is indeed almost of that kind which i call Serendipity. Tired of going to the same places around at my work place me and my colleagues were on a hunt and voila!! we found this hidden gem in the downcity. Luckily for us it was just a 15 minute walk away. Its a unique experience and one of its kind in providence. Its a food-station bar setting that you typically see in Newyork. Although a food-station bar they have a seating area outside and downstairs as well. Like other reviewers have mentioned you fill up the container and pay by pound. It works out the best as you could load up more on proteins and less on the carbs unlike the typical fast-food chains out there at least that's what i do all the time. There are options for quick freshly made sandwiches as well as snacks & drinks. The food-station bar has a variety of choices right from egg-rolls, dumplings to sea-food options, meat, noodles, freshly sauteed vegetables, salad or fruits. Compared to other supermarkets in the area, I noticed that the prices at Serendipity Gourmet were the same or lower than what you'll generally find around Providence. They've stuffed their limited floor space full of a staggering selection of local and imported products, and they're open for long hours!
