The hedgehog gelato is da bomb! It's very chocolatey and tastes just like the hedgehog from Purdy's. This shall be my must order flavor in future. There are so many flavors here. You can also get it in the form of milkshake. I love how they still sell candy at 10 cents, just like in the old days. You can also get coffee, tea and baked goods here. Lottery tickets too. Summer is for cold treats and gelato is perfect for a hot, summer's day. This small shop has probably over 40 flavours of gelato. What's really neat is that they display the gelato differently based on the flavour. There were actual Ferrero Rochers on the Ferrero Rocher flavour and some Kinder Surprise toys on the Kinder Surprise flavour. So cute! I got to try a bunch of flavours, but the wasabi flavour was most interesting. It tasted like wasabi and had a small kick. I had an excellent earl grey gelato in a waffle cone. Unfortunate to see other's had a negative experience here. We were served by a teenage girl who let us try a few samples and seemed knowledgeable about the ice creams and told us her favourites. I got black currant and (local tea maker's) earl grey (both fabulous!) and my boyfriend got moose tracks, peanut butter cups and tiramisu (YES, a three scooper! The dude loves ice cream). This is one of the few places that have lots of options and serves good ice cream. I am amazed at the variety. Have to say this place is worth going to. They have good ice cream. The staff are friendly. You get to sample before buying. I personally like their cafe latte. Yummy. Also this place has ice cream sandwiches and ice cream cakes. I love this place! You can sample before you buy. I got the chocolate with coconut milk gelato. It was rich in chocolate with a subtle coconut aftertaste - absolutely delicious! I opted for a cup, but I believe you can get a waffle cone for no extra charge. The price for one scoop was $4.50 plus tax. Very reasonable for the size of one scoop. The only downside is one scoop = one flavour. Service was very friendly - the younger women behind the gelato counter and the older gentleman at the cash were both lovely. The food and service are fine. I would rate higher, but the staff were not masked and there was no shield in front of the register. Also did not see hand sanitizer. We had our own masks and sanitizer, but we would feel safer if we saw more precautions. I hope it will be improved by our next visit to Gibsons. read more

The ice cream is meh - you can get better from the grocery store - but the rating is primarily for the poor service. There's a grumpy older woman working there that likes to make passive aggressive comments about customers walking by each other when trying to see the ice cream options even when they're maintaining distance. Its great youre wanting to ensure the safety of you patrons - instead of being a crabby woman try adding visible signage with guidelines, using a mask when serving people and asking people to adhere to the signage if they miss it. read more

Lots of flavours to choose from. I really enjoyed my dark chocolate cone, and my family shared a pistachio scoop in a cup, which I also tried (real pistachio pieces and no green food colouring). Very good gelato flavours without being too sweet, and good-sized scoops, too. The heat inside was oppressive, though. The girl helping us was impassive, and made no attempts to greet us or smile; and the cashier was too busy having a conversation with her friend to pay me any attention besides taking my money. Their website refers to "top notch customer service" but no one spoke to me during my entire transaction there. I bought two cups of ice cream from a dead-eyed, slump shouldered woman who seemed to be willing herself out of there. Another woman stopped talking to another person to stare at me as I told her what I had to pay for. Wordlessly she took my money. A very strange, cold experience. What's better than following a greasy Fish & Chips lunch with a scoop of Gelato from Mike's Place??? A double scoop($4!) of Gelato from Mike's Place!!!!! Spread over 2 coolers, there were about 40 flavours to choose from. I ordered Coconut and Cookies & Cream and my partner ordered Pumpkin Pie and Cheesecake. Each was exceptionally flavourful and creamy! My Coconut Gelato had Coconut shavings throughout and the Pumpkin Pie Gelato made me want Summer to end right then and skip to Thanksgiving! The small, front patio is great for taking a break or people watching as you eat. Mike's Place also has a coffee bar for your caffeine fix, light meals, and plenty of snacks for your stroll around Lower Gibsons. I think I even saw some old school VHS rentals in the corner. We went to the Greek restaurant next store and decided to go next door for ice cream after words. We were told the ice cream was homemade so thought we had to check this place out for desert. Tried a few samples of the ice cream. No real wow factor but it was the first ice cream place I've been too that doesn't have cone holders which makes it difficult to hold your cone and get your money out at the same time. So I noticed it's called Mikes place so I asked the guy if he was Mike the owner only to get a snarky response then he seemed upset I asked him which put me off somewhat then he said his son was Mike but it was weird how he seemed angry I asked. Maybe just had a bad day who knows but I ate 1/3 of my cone and threw it in the garbage because it was so sugary I honestly could stomach it. I don't think I've ever had ice cream that sugary it was awful. I will not be back. So again I got cheesecake and pumpkin pie. Okay, so I know I am lame... I always get the same thing, but why fix what ain't broke. I love their plain cheesecake flavour. It doesn't need a thing. It is perfection in a small, red cup. It's so smooth and has a real cream cheese flavour. I wish that the other gelato place we frequent had plain cheesecake, but I'll eat it anyways. I was so tempted to get two scoops of cheesecake, but I had to get pumpkin pie. I would eat pumpkin pie filling out of a can, and I akin this to that. Wow. It's exactly like eating the filling out of can. Not that I have. Yet. My husband got apple pie. It was kind of icy. Meh. That didn't deter me from eating it. I love how these people have created such wonderful flavours that taste exactly like they should. The snozzberries taste like snozzberries. I've only been here once back in August-September 2012, as it was my first time traveling to Vancouver, and I was taken to Nanaimo island by my relatives. It was a warm, hot day, so my uncle treated me to ice cream, and we stopped by Mike's Place. I am probably the most indecisive person in the whole world, so you know they have good service when the server is still smiling politely and friendly towards a girl who cannot decide what flavor she wants and has about ten spoons in her hand. Out of embarrassment at my indecisiveness, I quickly chose Toasted Almond on a cone despite not tasting much when I sampled it. But when the server handed me my cone, and I took a nice good lick, the subtle flavor of the toasted almonds(which you could see in the ice cream) gradually grew stronger, and I was hooked. I was so excited about the flavor that I offered it to my mom to try. She agreed with me -- and then proceeded to eat half my cone! (And just for the record, my mom has always been careful with her sugar intake due to diabetes) That's how good it was! It's so hard to find a place with good Toasted Almonds ice cream around where I live(and believe me, I've looked). I wish I could have visited Mike's Place one more time before leaving. If I ever get a chance to visit Nanaimo again, you know where I'll be stopping at! I should mention that I did not remember the name of this place, and hardly remembered where I went. I started by googling ferries in Vancouver, looking at their destinations, and finding Nanaimo familiar. Then I proceeded to google ice cream places in Nanaimo. Luckily, Mike's Place appeared fairly high in the results, and sounded familiar. I then google mapped it, which gave me a road in the middle of seemingly nowhere(though it looked familiar). I vistited this place in July after reading good reviews, and I suppose the fact that it is busy is because there isn't any other ice cream shop around. There was a very surly man at the cashier who was just so rude. To be fair the young people that work there were friendly but I wouldn't bother to go there again for mediocre ice cream and really bad coffee. If I could give zero stars I would. When I walked in the main guy sitting there was so rude to me it immediately made me cry. I've never been treated so subhuman before and brushed off like I didn't have a right to exist or a voice. If you are a woman I would suggest steering clear cause this man classically won't listen to a word you have to say or let you finish any sentence you start.
