Rooster's Ice Cream is not your typical ice cream spot. It almost seems like it's the complete opposite to the ice cream giants in town (Earnest and Rain or Shine) on purpose; I dig it. Located in a random spot? Check. Only one staff member working? Check. We've been a couple times and I have yet to see it busy. A few people pop in but no one ever lingers. Most likely because there's no seating. There's also a sign on the counter stating you can only sample 2 flavours during peak hours. There's usually 10 to 12 flavours to choose from; always something unique and interesting. They also have sundaes, ice cream sandwiches and doughnuts on the menu. - Mango raspberry swirl and London fog ($7.00 double) - waffle cone is included and it was better than expected. The ice cream itself tastes a bit denser but still has a creamy satisfying texture. The London fog was fantastic! The mango raspberry was more mango than raspberry but also quite good. - London fog ($5.00 single) - came back on a Monday and they only had four flavours that day. We went with the London fog; just as good as the last time. - Dark chocolate and black sesame with honey ($7.00 double) - the dark chocolate tasted like a fudgesicle but better. Not too sweet and hefty; it was so heavy it almost fell off the cone! The black sesame was delicious. Not quite like the ones we had in Japan but tasty and flavourful. I'll be back again and again! Very odd location and no seating unless you count place mats along the bench against the wall. Would be great if there were a couple tables at least outside. Ambiance resembles like a really old former laundry mat. Quality of ice cream is there. However, cookies and donuts were sold out so no sandwiches available for the ice cream. Pretty decent scoop. I am not sure if I would come back... I prefer seating with my ice cream. read more

I stopped by here because I wanted an ice cream filled donut, but the store was sold out. Ice cream sandwiches were sold out as well. Maybe they should stock up on more donuts and cookies during the weekends? I have been on a weekly ice cream adventure during the summer and wanted to try something different. Anyways, I tried a few samples and ended up with a passion fruit and mango raspberry double scoop ice cream cone. The quality of the ice cream is there. However, the passion fruit was not as frozen as the mango raspberry so I had to be very careful how I ate the cone. Overall, it was an alright experience. It is worth stopping by if you are in the area for some homemade ice cream. read more

Great to see more hard ice cream establishments in Vancouver. Read recent Roosters reviews so thought we would give it a try. There are some positives about our experience. First, it is an interesting location on east Broadway in a mainly residential area...the good thing is this allows for plenty of free street parking. The room is functional but leaves something to be desired aesthetically. The staff were pleasant and attentive. The flavours were very much in line with Earnest. Sampled the Dark Chocolate and selected my usual, Caramel Sea Salt. Strong creamy caramel taste (which is great) but unfortunately lacking any sea salt flavour. Glad we went but not sure we will be returning anytime soon. read more

Visited this ice cream bar due to an online voucher and was a little disappointed. I guess I expected it to be similar to Earnest or Rain or Shine, where the decor would be modern and hip. Roosters was nothing alike. It looked like they have not completed the renovation and many pieces were incomplete. The server was friendly, but also quite confused as she didn't really understand our voucher. She allowed us to try a lot of different flavours, but each time she gave us a little sample, the ice cream would fall off the spoon or onto her bare hand (which was a little unsanitary). I thought that the ice cream had great taste, but somehow the consistency of it that night was really chunky and icy. We ended up with a single scoop in a cone, and a ice cream filled doughnut. My cookies and cream ice cream scoop was delicious, although the waffle cone tasted like it was just bought from superstore. The doughnut was very dry, and tasted stale. Despite so, I believe that their ice creams have great taste, is definitely fresh and at a very good price. Presentation and overall experience can be improved. read more

I really like this place, however I'm going to give 2.5 stars for my recent visit. Everything was fine from sampling and then ordering double scoops of ice cream. I got lime & lavender and black sesame flavours they all tasted good. I really enjoyed their icecream till I saw a small piece of hair. That was first thing that turned me off. Owner gave me a new icecream when I showed it to her. Later she gave me a new scoop of icecream. So I had black sesame icecream for twice and then found solid mixture of sugar and sesame. I could taste solid sugar and sesame and icecream sepatately. It was tiny piece of solid sugar mixed with sesame. Yuck. Ingredients weren't mixed properly. Despite the great customer service I'm giving 2.5 stars. Hopefully I don't taste separation of sugar and icecream next time I go. I'm just disappointed. read more

Great shop! I was in here Sunday afternoon (01 September 2019), and the service was exceedingly good, not just with me, but customers who were there when I came in and those that came in after. I got to try a total of three flavours, my main purchase, a tasting spoon, and a pint I took home later. All three were disparate flavours (blueberry, caramel with sea salt, and mango & raspberry), but they were all flavourful, tasting as if great care was taken as they made it. Certainly, as if it were done in small batches; that's how robust the flavours were. And not sweet, as most ice cream places nowadays here in Vancouver tend to pack their product with. I'd recommend the shop; it's just as good as those places with long lines and such. Yes, the way it's set up doesn't allow for many people to linger for a long time, but it's well worth visiting for the ice cream not the ambiance. read more

I decided to head to Roosters to switch up from my go-to which is Earnest and I've gotta say it does not compare to the flavour profiles you get at Earnest. I got Cookies n Cream and it was yummy, but tastes like I could have store bought it myself for less than the price of a single scoop which is $5. This is definitely a grab and go as it's very hot inside and there is little to no ambience. Rooster's is on a block that is more residential, with very few other businesses, so it can be hard to miss... Once we entered, we noticed that the ice cream flavors on the wall were different than advertised on the window, which was fine, but then we were told we could only try two flavors. I have never heard of an ice cream shop that limits the number of samples one could have before choosing to buy some ice cream...Hmm.. we even asked the server what the more popular flavors were and she told us all of them were ordered equally amounts, which didn't help us make our choices... But anyways, of the flavors we did try, we liked for the most part - the lemon poppyseed had just the right amount of lemon to make it not too sour/tart... and the salted caramel was really good as well. Both were bold, full of flavor and really had a nice texture to it. The whiskey hazelnut was definitely heavy on the whisky side, which I liked :p - and the avocado ice cream took a while to grow on me - it was good, but I don't think I could eat a whole scoop of it, but that's just my taste preference. Anyways, overall, I thought the ice cream here is solid and I wouldn't mind coming here again, but it would be nice to be allowed to try more than two flavors in making a decision next time! read more

Meh. I've definitely experienced better... I went in today for some ice-cream and I came out pretty disappointed... I went in today with my family and we were looking forward to having some really good ice-cream. The girl behind the counter was very nice and she asked if we would like some samples and of course we tried them. The triple strawberry was the first flavour we tried... it tasted extremely artificial and super icy. We also tried some other flavours like mint cookie which tasted basically like mint chocolate but with cookie. It tasted like ice-cream from a tub. On their website they had a whole list of flavours that they had today, however when we went in there was only a few flavours we could choose from. I'm not sure if it's because of the time we went and they ran out... or if it was false advertising. The servers there were very friendly and bubbly... they also looked like they were in grade.7-9. They looked extremely young and were dancing to the music they were playing from a speaker. This was around 9:30pm so it was strange to see only two young girls running the whole store. We ended up getting two double scoop ice creams ($7 per cone). The first was whiskey hazelnut & salted caramel. The other was lemon poppy seed & whiskey hazelnut. Basically all of their flavours were pretty good, not extremely strong but still able to taste it. However the consistency of the ice cream was not good at all which was why it was disappointing. They all tasted icy and not creamy at all. It was also super runny and started to melt really fast. One of the scoop on our cones actually slid right off... thankfully we saved it and we asked the server for a cup to place it in. I wasn't able to get a photo of it because it slid off that fast. The store itself was really old, you can tell that the owner put the effort to make it look nice. They painted the walls, added some ice-cream photos and even painted the ceiling tiles to match the colour of the walls. But it was still obvious that the building was clearly an older building. Each table had a small plant that had a name stuck to it which was pretty unique. The price is the same as Earnest Ice Cream so I'd much rather spend it on that than the ice cream here. You can really tell that a lot of effort and love was put into this ice cream. I came here to try their lemon poppy seed flavour (which is undoubtedly one of my favourite ice cream flavours) and it had just the right amount of tang to it. Surprisingly I found myself buying a double scoop of lime and organic lavender and raspberry cheesecake instead. The decision was no easy task. The lime and lavender had a nice tang and light freshness to contrast the creamier raspberry cheesecake. I love that they didn't skimp on the the ingredients. The lime was filled with lime zest and lavender while the raspberry cheesecake had numerous bits of (whole?!) raspberry and cheesecake. The serving size is very generous, too, so a double scoop is well worth the price. I almost couldn't finish it. There are only two tables with two seats each, however, and considering the nearby VCC Broadway campus, they might want to add seating to accommodate what I think is going to be a large influx of students. p.s. I like down-to-earth people and down-to-earth ice cream bars. This place gave me HUGE scoops. More importantly, I was impressed with the flavour and the consistency of their ice creams--super creamy and smooth and not overly sweet. If people think the big "E" and the "R" are good, I think this place makes ice creams no worse or even better than the "R". They also have more interesting flavours. $5 for a huge single scoop. This icecream place is in a residential area surrounded by condos and apartments on East Broadway. It stays away from busy areas like restaurants on Main Street, Cambie Street, downtown and etc. I tried their mint chocolate icecream and my boyfriend tried the triple strawberry icecream. The triple strawberry icecream was better than the mint chocolate one. I liked the icecream here, but I still like Earnest Icecream more or the best among all the icecream stores in Metro Vancouver. read more

This is without question the best ice cream in town, made in small batches out of the best ingredients. The hours are unpredictable, so we tend to pop in whenever we go by and it's open, so we don't miss the chance. (Favourite flavours: Blueberry balsamic, coffee, and salted caramel, although so far they've all been good.) We've been loyal customers for a few years, but now I'm hearing from friends that when they've gone in after their COVID shots they've been subjected to anti-vax nonsense. Rooster's is the best ice cream spot in Vancouver, as far as I'm concerned. I'm excluding La Casa Gelato from the running because ... well, that's just not fair. Sure, Rooster's doesn't look fancy-schmancy like Earnest. I'm glad it doesn't. To me, that makes it more accessible. Their flavours really stand out - the latest passionfruit and blueberry balsamic swirl both have exciting colours and flavours, and are absolutely worth your time. The salted caramel is balanced, memorable, and a whole damn experience. Avocado honey with lime may sound weird to some, but it's got the right sweet balance. One time I splurged and got myself a pint of the stuff. When I lived in Vancouver, I was a five-minute walk away from Earnest's Fraser Street location. 9 times out of 10, I would choose Rooster's instead. read more

The first time I tried Roosters was a few years ago in beer floats at Storm Brewery (dark chocolate, LondonFog and their award winning #2014BestofVancouver Lemon Poppyseed). I'm mildly lactose intolerant so I limit/save my dairy for things that are REALLY good. Roosters is way beyond that, creamy delicious scoops of flavours that are spot on. This place is literally a 5 minute walk away from where I live and when they first opened I've always been meaning to check the place out but I've never really gotten around to it until a few months ago. I walked there evening time after dinner with my sister to get something for dessert, and the girl at the counter, upon arrival was typing away on her phone. She didnt look up from her phone even after we had made it to the counter until 10 seconds later when I said "um excuse me". When she looked up she didn't even bother to greet us or even smile, only said "What do you want." That already put me off and I kind of just wanted to turn right around and leave but both of us really had a craving for ice cream that night so we went ahead and asked her what she would suggest since this was our first time here. She told us we could try a few samples of the flavors. I think their flavors are a terrible knock-off/copy cat of Earnest Icecream (which I absolutely LOVE). They also didn't have a big selection. The ice cream was ok, we ended up going with the London Fog and Lemon Poppy Seed flavors but it wasn't anything more than average. It was a little bit too icy tasting for me, as if it were freezer-burnt (maybe it was in the freezer for too long?) I recommend heading to Earnest if you're looking for unique tasting flavors and willing to pay a little more for good quality ice cream. Furthermore their service is just terrible; the girl was rude, unwelcoming and distracted. Don't come here or you'll be disappointed. read more

This place is too cute! And they have vegan options! They make their own ice cream in-house and have a selection of eight flavours. It rivals Rain or Shine or Earnest's ice cream, even if the store isn't as fancy and polished. We got friendly service with lots of tasters. And the best thing is, it's right by my house! I can't say enough about how delicious this ice cream was. This is the first time that I have been to Rooster's but the owner was very nice and made recommendations of ice cream to try. I settled on the mint cookie and cream and it was perhaps the best ice cream I think I had. I was in Vancouver for my birthday weekend with a friend of mine, I didn't get a cake for my birthday but this was exactly what I needed. I will be back for sure! read more

Sorry for the three stars. The ice cream is fine. It's just not superlative. If you bought deluxe ice cream from the supermarket, it would taste about the same as here. The waffle cones are from a bag. Some ice cream shops make their own waffle cones from scratch. I think they just use regular milk and cream instead of Avalon organic milk (I'm guessing here). I felt like I could still taste the minute ice crystals instead of the super creamy and smooth mouth feel that I get from Earnest or Beta-5. They do give quite a large portion of ice cream scoops though. I suppose you could argue that in this area located next to VCC, it's quite special. Although I think that both locations of Earnest Ice Cream are not that far away. Edit: Well, I'm getting a bit of flak for this review, which is fine. I think the ice cream here is A-OK, as in three stars. If I'm going to give a place 5 stars, it had better be the best ice cream within at least a 5km radius, if not the entire city. Rooster is not the best ice cream within a 5km radius. Maybe within a km, but even within 2km, I think some of the gelato places on Commercial Drive would be better. By the time you get to 5km, you're within Earnest or Beta 5 territory, and it's impossible for me to be honest and state that Rooster ice cream is at the same level of Earnest ice cream. This place is a real gem! Reminds me of Henry's place in Waikiki. Had the lavender and lemon ice cream and it was super delicious. Nice, rich flavour with real pieces of lavender. Also tried the whiskey hazelnut and mango swirl. They have a very unique assortment of flavours and everything is made in house. Friday evening, after a lovely sushi meal. Frd told me there is a new open ice cream shop (very excited) , locate on E broadway, free parking on the street that's awesome. Tried few sample of the ice cream, avacado ..hmmm.. ok, however we picked two fav "whisky hazelnut and lodon fog". Very whisky, but hazelnut didn't roasted before put into ice cream, taste like raw hazelnut(no taste), london fog.. not bad a bit too sweet. We found this gem around the corner from our Airbnb and we are so happy we did. It is a hole in the wall ice cream place that has homemade interesting and yummy flavors of ice cream. It seemed a bit pricey for what it was and the service was OK but other than that it is worth trying out. The ice cream was pretty yummy overall. This place is not bad for a new addition to East Van but unfortunately could be a lot better. They were friendly and they encouraged me to try a lot of flavours. The concept is there, competing with ice cream joints such as Earnest Ice Cream or Rain or Shine etc but the operations of the place could be a lot better? One star off for the bad decor. The purple and gray paint is not bad but the lines and alternating colours don't work. The wide open space at the back wall where we could see the storage area and fridge is kind of an eye sore. The random items sold on shelves just ruin the atmosphere. Another star off for operations and the flow of ordering. The ice cream cart was on the side so the server had to go around the counter to hand me the tasters on a spoon. Kind of awkward. Just an overall uneasy experience, but the taste and texture of the icecream is almost there but not quite. Great selection of handmade flavours though. read more

This time around I had to order the dark chocolate again - so chocolatey, so creamy - and I tried the cookies n' cream, too. The servings are generous, the prices are reasonable, the ice cream is awesome and it's not crowded when I've been. I highly recommend a short jaunt to West Broadway and Glen Dr. instead perhaps of some of the more well-known places on your ice cream radar, for really great ice cream. Two strikes against it: 1. Grainy icy ice cream, like they had been in the freezer too long. You could taste the separation of cream and sugar- gritty and slightly chalky. Otherwise, the flavours were fine. 2. The service was... interesting. I went on a Friday evening around 7pm. The store was very quiet and two staff were at the till. I asked for three flavors to try. One of the staff went to the back and the other one barely acknowledged me. When I asked again, she finally acknowledged my request and gave me two samples. I asked her which was which, and she replied, "why don't you taste it and find out." I couldn't tell if she was being dry and sarcastic or just rude. Okay. Fine. I asked her if I could try one more flavor, and she didn't respond. When I asked again, she replied in the same monotone voice, "only two samples per person during peak hours." There was nobody in the store. Not another customer. Nada. I guess it's more important to stick to policy than for them to make a happy returning customer. It appears that I'm the exception to the rule, so I'm hoping that this was just a one-off. I'll give them another go when I'm in the neighbourhood next time... and hopefully I can update my review with a more positive score. read more

Holy! This is seriously good ice cream. I live just a block away and have been waiting for this place to open since they started renos. Amazing flavours that are spot on, with the perfect creamy texture. We had the cookies and cream, london fog, and salted caramel- all of which were delicious. Not to mention the pricing is incredibly reasonable. Huge scoops of high quality ice cream at $5 for a single or $6 for a double? Count me in! Also pretty cool that they even offer a dairy-free option made with coconut. I will be back. Frequently. read more
