It had its own valve and connected to the copper feed from the street. I cut off the water at the street and then started calling plumbers. Schaffer, which I called about 4:45 pm, was the only one of three companies we called that could make it out the same day. (Everyone was very busy because of freezing weather). They said they'd be here between 5pm and 7pm. They were here around 5:45pm. They capped the copper that fed the PVC and we were done. They also did a number of other checks. The phone attendant was really courteous, and took the time to find an available plumber, after I explained that it was probably a 20-minute job at best (which it was). The plumber, John, was professional, courteous, and explained everything to us perfectly clearly regarding what we needed to do next, etc. I couldn't have been happier with the response and the service, especially with the prospect of going without water for anywhere from 2 to 5 days again (After the Feb 21 snow event/loss of water). The invoice we received in email was detailed, and included a number of high quality photos of the repair site. After a really, really bad experience with another A/C and plumbing company last year, Schaffer was a refreshing change.

I got an estimate for a broken pipe but they could not do it Saturday. The owner said his employee come back Monday between 9:30 am and 12:30 to make the repair but he thought they would be here around 10am. I waited and waited. At 12:35 I get a message that the repairman is on the way. I called their office and the automated response says my call cannot be completed. Then I get a call back from the owner saying his worker will be late. I questioned why no one let me know he would be late and the owner said they had an emergency. I then asked why no one let me know I would be waiting and I would have the option to possibly postpone the appointment, the owner said he did not need the attitude from me and said then HE was going to cancel the appointment. Water was leaking from our upstairs bedroom attic down to our first floor living room ceiling.1st…read moreCall came out and after 3-1/2 hours of looking at it and talking about it, gave us two proposals to correct the problem. The first was to replace the supposedly damaged and leaking evaporator coil and drain pan inside the air handling unit at a cost of nearly $7k, with only a 90-day warranty on certain parts and labor. The timing to receive the parts and schedule the installation was undetermined. The second option was to replace the entire air handler and outside condensing unit at a cost of $16.5k. We were told that this equipment was available from their warehouse and work could begin as early as the next day. In either case, they emphatically stated that they would not work with any home insurance company because they would not provide any required pricing breakdowns and they always tended to make them "look bad". It was recommended that we keep the unit turned off until the system was repaired/replaced and that we stay in another part of the house that has a separate unit until then. We contacted another HVAC company to look at the problem. They came out the next day. After an hour they had the unit checked out and determined that there was no air handling unit problem, the evaporator coil was fine. and that we had a plugged-up drain line. They flushed the line out with compressed air, vacuumed it out and had the system back on for less than $500. It has been working perfectly for two weeks now. We had used 1st Call for 2-3 years prior; never again. You can imagine the level of betrayal we experienced. Be cautious of companies that are either incompetent, untrustworthy or just out and out fraudulent.
