After a microburst in Providence several years ago, a couple of large trees fell in my yard. I called Mike's early and left a message. (I had used them earlier to cut down a tree and grind a stump.) The crew came out as scheduled, made quick work of it. Expensive job, but worth it to have quick, efficient service. I also buy firewood from them regularly and they do a good job of backing through a narrow gate and avoiding overhead power lines. I'm sorry to see unhappy reviews here. Mike's "Professional" Tree Services did not do the work they were supposed to do. Three 5am calls to discuss the job were very unprofessional, the owner showing up unannounced to talk buisness. The owner has a very strong personality, is condescending and is unprofessional. Calling a client at 5 am is not acceptable no matter how urgent you need to discuss business! I've used Mike's Tree Service twice over the last three years and really wish I could give a better rating. Mike is a nice enough guy but he does have a strong personality and will only give you a verbal quote. I never had a problem with the quote not matching the bill, but I have had issues where other things he promised while on-site were not recalled when following up in the future (pricing on future work, firewood, etc). The crews themselves worked quickly and professionally and cleaned up better than expected. Overall pricing was significantly less than other quotes I received. Honestly, if a quote would be made on paper instead of a handshake so there was no question of what was agreed upon my rating would be 5 stars. My wife and I are very happy with the work Mike and crew provided. They were quick and clean, and modestly priced.

We called Mike's to remove a large dead tree that was on the corner of our street. We are so pleased with the results! His team were there the next day and it only took about an hour and 1/2 to bring the tree down. The crew was very professional and they cleaned all of the debris in no time. They came back early the next morning and ground down the stump. I am thoroughly pleased. We can't even tell that there was a tree there at one time. Recently used this service due to necessity. It proved to be not very honest service. The appraiser gave a verbal estimate promising to do this and that while a crew left the project unfinished asking for more money than initially agreed. Had used Mike's Service before to take down two large pine trees and trim some other trees on our property, they were fast and did a good job cleaning up the area. The owner can be a bit to take. So we tried them a second time, Received a quote and that they would do the work the next day before noon. Exact quote " we will be here before noon" I waited till 1:30 then called to see where the guys were and was told I would be contacted when they were on the way. 3:30 came around and no guys. I called the answering service to cancel who tried to have them come by any way. I declined, within ten minutes of hanging up the owner had called me trying to have the guys come by when I declined he became belligerent and requested me to take them off my calling list for service. I am more then happy to do so. This is a small state but there are plenty of other companies out there. read more

Please be aware, DO NOT HIRE Mike's Professional Tree Service. Mike is the dishonest, deceitful, and rude owner. He was a very busy man, price gouging during tropical storm Irene. I was quoted $3,000 to remove a large tree that had split in two with half of the tree landing across my yard and the other half still upright. Mike's crew only removed several fallen branches in my driveway that night and Mike told me his crew would be back on Monday or Tuesday. It was dark at that point and his crew was working without adequate lightening which was dangerous. Three days later I spoke with Mike to see when his crew would finish the job. He informed me that the job was done, that the $3,000 was the cost to remove just those branches not the whole tree. "That's all you paid for." INCREDIBLE!!! I am contacting the Attorney General so that others will not be his next victims. read more

I don't think I talked with the owner so I had no 5am phone calls. If I had, I would have hired another company. I was charged more than I was quoted by $30. Whoever it was that came to remove the stumps said that only one was included in the quote, not both. It would be $30 more to do both. They took that check and cashed it the same day. The receipt I just got in the mail says BOTH stumps were included. First he lied, then he stole money. Nice. But they did remove both stumps. The crew worked fast and cleaned up well but they arrived 2 hours late. There was another thing we weren't satisfied with. My husband asked them to leave some of the wood so he could chop into firewood. They left several very large pieces that only a professional saw could cut through, and at around 200 pounds apiece, nobody can move them. We're thinking of decorating the pieces and calling them "lawn ornaments". We can't move them and we can't cut through them! They do this all the time so they must have known a piece that size could not easily be dealt with, and if they didn't know, then I agree that the company needs a name change. Remove the word "Professional" from the name. All in all, not the worst experience but I would not recommend them since I would not use them again myself. Please believe the bad reviews below. I called Mike on a Monday to remove some dead trees. He said we would meet on Sunday for an estimate and to look at the work. The next day, a Tuesday, one of his guys called me to ask specifically which trees I wanted down. The entire crew and machines were at my property to do the job! I said I hadn't met Mike or hired him. They went to work anyway...on what...who knows! I managed to get to the property two hours later. They were "done". They took down a bunch of dead and living trees. He then charged me $4000 for two hours of work I didn't hire him to do. I cowardly paid him. Do NOT hire or even call this guy! I called Mike's Tree Service on a Monday and Mike came out Tuesday to look at my yard and give me quote. I needed 7 trees trimmed and was not sure if any of them needed to taken down. After our conversation he told me I only needed them cleaned up and quoted a price which was very reasonable. I offered to give him a deposit and he refused stating that he did not want me to pay until the work was done to my satisfaction. We scheduled for Monday the following week. To my surprise his crew showed up Saturday late morning and went right to work. Steve and the crew were amazing and discussed everything he was going to do. They cleaned up after they were done and it was like they were never there. No damage to lawn , flowers etc. Amazing job! I am very picky about my yard and they left everything in perfect order. The staff and delivery man were very friendly, and super personable. I chose Mike's for my first cord of wood in RI because of them. And because they could deliver the next day. Unfortunately, the wood is NOT seasoned at all. I participated in cutting my own firewood for 44 years in the western US, and know what dry wood is, and how it should burn. If you use a moisture meter at all, the wood delivered to me was 30% and higher moisture content. I use wood as my only source of heat, and can't get this wood to do anything more than smolder in my brand new, very high end, Lopi wood stove. Mike's reply to my call to talk about this problem was: "that no one else ever had complained, and that I needed to stack it in smaller stacks...it would dry right away". No other help or concern was offered. Nope...wrong answer. I later found that MANY people have complained and do not buy wood from this business. I DID find that there are other, very good, honest firewood vendors in RI, so please do your homework. read more

Not a good experience... a tree split in our back yard during hurricane Sandy. Mike came by to quote us at $1000 to take it down. We were hesitant, and immediately he came down in price by $300, and was very pushy. But we hired him and he ended up doing the job that day. We were promised the wood would be neatly stacked for firewood in the backyard when the job was finished. Unfortunately my husband and I were both at work when the job was done, and when we came home, the yard was a mess. The tree was just chopped down and cut into huge 5' log segments which we can't even budge. There were branches all over our back and front yard. There were branches in the street in front of our house. My husband called, and Mike was very rude on the phone. He scoffed and said he didn't even remember us because he had "so many jobs" to do... what kind of customer service is that? He curtly told us to file a complaint with his office if we wanted the crew to come back, but we didn't even want to deal with it. So the tree is still in the back yard, giant 5' logs and all. Finally, the icing on the cake is the billing. We never received an initial invoice until I received a call from the office saying we were overdue on our deposit. We never received anything in writing, and only after the office would call us would we receive a statement in the mail. Very unorganized business. Recently hired Mike's service to remove 2 large pine trees and 1 large oak with instructions to remove the pine and cut the oak into 4' sections and leave. Mike came out to quote the job himself and we made an agreement with a handshake. They came to the house and cut the trees as requested, however the team tasked with removing the trees came out later and determined they could not get their equipment in to retrieve. Mike called with the news and asked if I could do it myself. I told him I could not so he brought in a smaller tractor and completely tore up the yard. They removed the pine AND the oak. When I complained of the damage he stated he had no choice and offered to supply materials to repair. I declined and will not due any further business with this company. read more

Used them before and had no complaints 2 years ago. Now the father retired, and the son took over there is a whole new crew and the son has no professional manners. Was quoted originally at an amount, then he goes back on his word and raises it to a higher amount for an hour and a few extra branches. When called to discuss why these changes occurred I was cursed out with words like. "Bitch," and "Fuck you,". He was very disrespectful and apparently doesn't listen to his customers the first time around for what job they want done. Overall very poor experience and would not recommend them to anyone else till he can work in a more professional manner befitting his job position. read more

Mike's Tree service came for estimate exactly when they said they would, offered a comparable price, and was able to remove the tree that week. I had REAL trouble with Mike. I asked him to take down a large tree in my backyard that was damaged during the last hurricane a few years ago. They had done some pruning of the tree just prior to the storm so I was very grateful. Unfortunately, they neglected to remove a large limb that was completely rotted at the trunk. I came down in the storm, crushed my deck and destroyed my hot tub. My real beef is what came next. I asked him to take the whole tree down. In the aftermath of the storm he insisted I pay up front by credit card. So I did. He said he would not be able to take the wood away, but would chunk it up into 2 ft lengths and I would take care of it from there. When I got home that day I had a 3' diameter tree trunk by 12' long in my backyard. When I called to ask him about our agreement, he had no recollection and said that was standard procedure and he never chunks it up. I'm not sure what the average homeowner does with a piece of tree that large. Mike just collect my money and screwed me over. read more

Absolutely the worst experience I have ever had. Mike showed up and gave my husband a quote. We requested trimmimg the trees around the electrical wires. Shows up a day late. When i got there his team was just about done. I pointed out that they missed a few branches. The worker calls Mike because they "weren't on the sketch" . Mike proceeds to say its an additional $150 to cut those branches. The work order clearly states "trim all branches on electrical wires" Then I noticed he cut an entire tree down. He states your husband told me i could. When I told him no he didn't he tells me to shut the f%%% up. Ok get off my property. Ill be deducting $150 from the bill. I knew some people who used Mike in the past and read the reviews here on Yelp. Yes, he is a bit gruff, but as long as you can deal with that his service his excellent. We had a few trees that needed to be taken down along with their stumps. I set up an appointment for an appraisal the next week. Two days later Mike calls and says he will be in the area the next day. Great! I was not able to meet him face to face but my wife did. She called me while he was there and we set everything up. He was nice enough to both of us. He is a working man people, not a snooty country club exec.. The price was great and the crew was there a few days later. Hi, I just had Mike the owner from Mikes Professional Tree Serevice come to my house for an estimate for some stump grindin and some tree removal. He saw my yard and gave me a huge quote. When i told him that I was only looking to have the stumps grinded and 1 tree removed, He told me to get someone else to do the stumps and walked away, Because i didnt want him to remove all the trees, WHAT A DICK. We had used mikes before for cords of wood for our stove, the last delivery we got was wet wood and wouldn't light or stay lit in the stove no matter how much kindling we used, my mother called to complain and mike said he would comp us a half cord the next time. So the day came which was Monday which was a holiday and we wanted to place our order for the next day if that was possible, the lady in the office said I have to find paperwork, which basically took 5 hours for a phone call back, then she said it would be delivered the Tuesday because she had no drivers due to holiday. Well Tuesday came and after 7 phone calls 4 of which went unanswered we finally got an answered phone call and said she was just waiting for a driver. I'd like to add we live less than a mile away from mikes. So by 3:30 and the impending snow storm had already begun I called to cancel this "free" wood. So no wood for the storm and we count on that heat to keep the house warm. I will never use them again, it's bad business and I'm always the one to use locally owned business'. We called Warwick tree service for our wood, just got our delivery right on time not a minute late and the driver was polite. So think again before you choose mikes. read more

She stated that someone would come out the day before to place cones so that no one would park where they needed the truck to be placed, in a neighboring parking lot. They never did this and when they showed up the next day a car was parked there. "Mike" the owner calls and states he wants $500 more or they won't take the tree down which was not in our budget. So then he states he wants $250 for their time. We are not responsible for their time if they did not do what was discussed. We also are not responsible for where people park when it is not on our property. Mike then proceeds to threaten to put a lien on the property! With no written contract and no work performed. He thinks he can strong arm people into giving him more money (for nothing). He's a bully and completely unprofessional. I don't know how this guy is still in business. These are complete assholes. They were cutting trees in my neighbors yard. They decided to not have my neighbor move his van, instead they would drive around it to get to his backyard. Well their 10 wheeler boom truck ran over my lawn along the neighbors driver and sank the whole thing in. I wasn't looking for a new lawn, I talked to the owner about needing about 1-2 yards of screened loam to fill in the damage and reseed. I would do the work myself. Would have been MAYBE $40 for them to have the loam delivered and dumped at my house. Instead, this asshole Mike tells me that he has already sent his crew to "pitch fork it out" and it was all set but that at the most I would only need a wheelbarrow of loam. No one has been to my house to "pitch fork it out" and I have passed on the info to the city for the damaged sidewalk as well. No professionalism at all. read more

As a result of a large storm on 10/29/17, two very large branches broke off from one of our large trees. Fortunately no damage resulted for our neighbor or us. I called Mike's on 10/30/17 and was asked if this was an emergency, and told Trish this wasn't, I was told that it may be a while before mike could get back to me. Mike called me on 11/1/17 and was at our house. We discussed what would be done and he gave me a verbal quote. We agreed and he said he would be out the next day. Good to his word he and his crew were at our house at 7:00 AM the next day. The trees were down and a few large logs were left on the ground. I phoned Mike and he said they would be out the next day to finish the job. Again, true to his word, they did just that. They cleaned everything from the yard nothing was left behind. We are happy with the work and the clean-up. Without a doubt we would use and recommend Mike's Tree Service. Mike does have a strong personality and a good sense of humor. I wanted to get a price to trim my gorgeous pine trees that were used for privacy from the neighbors on each side of the house. I was planning on putting my house of the market as the realtor advised me to trim them. I called Mikes Professional Tree Service to get a price. Mike comes over looks at the trees and leaves. I received no written estimate or received any price. I go to work the next day only to receive a call from my friend who was visiting me staying at my house "She said". There's someone here cutting all your trees down. I flipped I called Mike to ask what are you doing and to stop immediately that I never agreed to have him do anything! I left work with a migraine to go home and see all my gorgeous pines gone he cut them all down. I cried for days I was so upset. I refused to pay him and told him that he had no right to just come and remove my trees my gorgeous pine trees . I didn't agree to hire him. I received a huge bill. I proceeded to go to the court house to fight the charges and present my case and receive damages. When I told them who to serve "Mikes tree service" all the court house workers knew of him and told me there were so many law suits against him for doing the same thing he had done to me They said just let it go that he is a loose canon and you don't know what he's capable of doing that and he has made people's lives miserable. That he sued some of the clients that weren't happy with how he does business for deformation of character. I was so happy to see these yelp reviews for now I know I wasn't alone .Please do yourself a favor "Look elsewhere" it was a nightmare.
