Prices are actually reasonable given the quantities provided which are at least enough for a second take home meal. My Eggplant Parm Wrap with Fries (Cole Slaw and pickles for the table) was stuffed with fresh nightshade, semi-spicy red gravy and melted mozzarella. A pile of crisp fries filled the remainder of the platter. I also grabbed a few sweet potato fries from my dining companion and they were actually better than my standards. The other half of my lunch is now sitting in the fridge awaiting consumption this evening. 90 seconds in the microwave should bring it nicely back to life. Been going to Mike's diner on Forest Ave for about 5 years now. My girlfriend, who is black, has been going there for 3 decades. The owner never says hi, or even acknowledges our existence. I dont know if he's racist, or just a miserable bastard! Like to food and the waitstaff, who are always great. U fortunately we will not be going back to his restaurant. I've been coming here for some time, and my 10-year-old absolutely loves it. One of the main reasons we keep coming back is because of the incredible service from Juan -- he's always smiling, helpful, and often steps in to assist tables that aren't even his. He's a true gem. Unfortunately, today's experience left a bad taste. I came in for breakfast with my daughter, and the woman who served us was incredibly rude from the start. She barely acknowledged us, didn't engage at all, and was so unpleasant that even my 10-year-old said, "Mom, she's not nice." She dropped our food on the table without a word and walked away. When I asked for butter, she looked annoyed. I later asked for the check and a to-go carton, and she rolled her eyes. That was it for me. I let the hostess know on our way out, and she simply said the server was overwhelmed. I told her Juan is busy too -- and yet he still found time to stop by, smile, and even refill my drink, which our own server never once offered to do. I'm giving this visit a 1 star because of how unwelcome we were made to feel, but I want to be clear: Juan deserves a 10. He's a perfect example of what great service should look like. We went back for breakfast again and everything was as good as before but I ordered a veggie omelette that was not on the menu when they said they could do that. I expected it to be priced similarly to the other omelettes but they charged me $19 for an omelette that didn't even have any meat in it. I was sat by the host and some Middle Eastern waiter asked us for our drink and I asked for a Diet Coke with lemon and ten minutes past no diet no coke no lemon and I turned around to see the waiter just sitting down so I signal for him and he pointed at a waitress. The service was at the slower end and took approximately 10 minutes to be served after sitting down, since our waitress was chatting up a storm with the table behind us. I want to say how thrilled my kids and I was tonight. It was so amazing. How they treated my family made them feel so special. Every time I go I feel like family. I been going there for a year. I kept going because of Shirley first she is so funny happy entertainment service top notch. Then you have Jamie and Chrisy they are so kind holding down the fort together working together making sure everyone is good. Never coming back here after hearing racial slurs from the back kitchen. Came to Mikes Unicorn Diner on 11/29/21 with my wife and kids. As we walked inside, we were waiting for someone to come and seat us. All of the employees were bickering back and forth so no one helped us... while we were at the bar watching this scene... for about 10-15 minutes after we sat down, finally someone took our order and brought us water. We ordered a Tex-Mex scramble with grits and some side dishes. It took almost an hour for our food to come out, which gave us time to watch the owner and all the employees argue with each other.. what a scene to say. The food finally comes out and the food was horrible. It had ZERO seasoning on it. None. I was taken by surprise because of the reviews. Food would've been better at Dennys/I-Hop. The grits was like water. We sent the grits back and decided to drench our food with sauce, salt and pepper just to get food in our system before a 4 hour drive. The check comes and the grits was still on it even though the person helping us said they would take it off. Then they charged us $3.11 for pice de gallo which was just diced tomatoes & we all know that aint pico de gallo. Our server even asked us if there was "anything weird about the food?" .. we didnt want to extend this experience so we said "No problem" .. then she continued to say "let me know, because i need an excuse to fight Maria" and then pointed at the kitchen. Who can resist a place with unicorn in its name? Well, the answer is everyone. They don't follow the menu, the food is garbage, and they argue with customers. I ordered a simple roast beef sandwich listed as a club that came with fries and coleslaw. I got an inedible roast beef sandwich piled with iceberg and fatty roast beef and no bacon. Also, no fries. The coleslaw was def not made in house either. I called to complain and was told to take it up with the company that processes their orders, but I reminded him I signed the receipt in store. So he gave me some money back, fine. Not worth it in my opinion. I also purchased a cannoli in the restaurant which, for $5.50, was sorely disappointing. Not filled all the way with a soggy shell. Overall a pleasant experience at Mike's Unicorn Diner. The waitress was very kind and nice, however, they weren't wearing a mask but it was 3 am so it's alright. They also did not check for our vaccination status. Most of the food was delicious, by the end, we were stuffed. The hot chocolate was decent, but I was displeased that a small mug of it was around $3-$4. The curly fries and fried pickles were the highlight of the meal. The bacon wasn't too crispy, and the omelette was alright. I asked for a spinach mushroom and tomato omelet, but they unfortunately left out the tomato. The oreo cheesecake was delicious though. PROS: The service was quick and the staff were friendly. They provided generous portions (ordered Mexican omelette and a western omelette for my girlfriend). CONS: the home fries were saturated in garlic salt powder, effecting they rest of the dish and making it extremely hard to finish the meal and so that is what happened - couldn't finish it ! I made sure I made a notation that one of the breakfast orders could not have any onions or peppers in the home fries ::like I have in the past:: because the person has a allergy. All was looking good until I had to grab their medication because there was still peppers and onions in the home fries. I had also ordered a ham and cheese omelet and that also had pieces of peppers and onion in it when it's not even supposed to have that in it. Extremely rude and uncaring towards regular customers who spend a lot of money here, the prices are high. No matter how many times you ask them to check the order when you call, they still don't. Waitress was right on it with bringing us water and asked if we were ready to order. I followed my coworkers lead as he's been here several times. First, big high five for your support of the disabled community. I hesitate to eat out because of rare bad experiences like we had an Annadale Terrace (awful treatment towards disabled customers and mediocre food). Today, I quietly asked how we can get a wheelchair in. Right away the man at the door ran over and opened a side door with a ramp to let us in. Then, the other host immediately found us a table with more than enough room for the wheelchair. The hosts didn't even bat an eye. One of the hosts (older man) made our dining experience so special. He made sure we were extra comfortable and well taken care of. He's a gem and one of the big reasons I will be back and recommending the diner to all my local friends and family. The entire staff is so pleasant. They knew many of the regulars. I had the turkey club. It overflowed with fresh, juicy carved turkey, crispy bacon, crunchy iceberg lettuce and juicy tomatoes. The fries were crispy and hot. My husband had the chicken club. They have a beautiful bakery counter. Their menu is extensive and it's clear most people are repeat customers. Now she goes to get my check and the manager yells at her because another table complained about *no napkins*. This is easily the best diner on the island, and is my go to place after a fun night out with my friends. The service is almost always friendly and the food just hits the spot. I think in the many years I've been going here I've only had 1 or 2 unpleasant experiences, but the staff is always willing to fix whatever the issue is! You do not see many 24/7 diners anymore. Mike's is one of them and glad they are holding strong. The food is your typical diner grub. $18 for an omelette is insane but I guess thats what inflation does to you. They do have parking in the back which is convenient. The service was good as well so no complaints there. I love diners and I hope they stay around for a while. With that being said, its hard for them to go above 3 stars. Ugh... Either the waitstaff is dumb/doesn't care/doesn't understand English. Waiter didn't understand a word we were saying. I specifically asked for the kid's meal grilled cheese with ONE SLICE OF CHEESE since my son has minimal teeth. The waiter told me it was full price. I didn't expect any discount, just one slice of cheese. Out comes the meal and there is half of a grilled cheese loaded with maybe 4-5 slices of cheese. His fries were practically burnt (inedible to a 1 year old with 8 teeth).... Ask for an ice cream that comes with it and it's adulterated in chocolate and some pink syrup....rest of the food was meh.
