We decided to meet up at Mila Plant-Based, 100% vegan restaurant in the downtown area sort of right in-between Downtown Eastside, Science World, and Gastown. The restaurant has a lovely, quaint ambiance, feels very welcoming upon entering. The bathroom was .. well, posh! I don't normally make a point to comment on bathroom decor, while average in size, I felt like I was being upgraded to First Class lol. Ok, moving right along .. lol They have two menus, a Weekend Brunch Menu and, for all other hours, a Lunch/Dinner Menu, ..we ordered from the Weekend Brunch Menu. I had the Bibimbap Bowl - rice bowl with Yo Egg, mushroom bacon, kimchi, tempura yam, cucumber, carrot, gochujang sauce. This bowl had many layers of unique flavors all married perfectly in every exquisite bite, I say this very sincerely! My wife ordered the Pina Colada Pancakes - pancakes, toasted coconut syrup, cashews, cocktail cherries, rum-candied pineapple, mint. Each bite easily lived up to the the decadence displayed in the included image. We absolutely have to find our way back to Mila to try their Lunch/Dinner menu as it includes some amazing sounding options such as, Feta Stuffed Date - date, feta, pistachio, olive oil, maldon salt, ABURI LOX OSHI - carrot lox, aburi sauce, shiso, serrano, 6 pieces, Tuna Crispy Rice - watermelon akami tuna, sushi rice, lime kewpie mayo, green onion, sesame seeds, 3 pieces, and much more. We had quite a few options to choose from regarding where to meet for brunch, with every option sounding wonderful in their own way. I LOVED this place. Delicious vegan food with a luxury dining presentation. I ordered from the happy hour menu so I could try more items since I was dining alone. I got the Bao, Tostada, Crispy rice and one more piece of sushi to try. The server was kind and recommended all of the dishes I ordered. There was nothing I would not want to taste for a second time! I'm generally very open minded to different types of cooking and I've always had positive experiences at other vegan restaurants so the excitement to try Mila was overflowing!! I made a reservation here for my best friend's birthday as she is vegan. When we arrived, it was a total coincidence that the restaurant had set up birthday balloons for their 4th anniversary which worked out so well. We had the best time doing a photoshoot for my friend and she loved it! Our server, Emily was very helpful in assisting us to make selections from the menu. The food all looked delicious upon arrival and they also delivered in taste too! Bulgogi Tacos This was my personal favourite. I loved the sauce and also the texture of the "bulgogi" - the tofu/soy substitute that they used happens to be one of my favourite kinds. Very pleasant, I can see why it was on the Birthday comeback menu. I need this item on the regular!!! Tuna Crispy Rice This was a very interesting take on tuna using pieces of watermelon flavoured with lime kewpie mayo. I found the flavour very refreshing - the watermelon had an interesting texture that was a lot closer to fish than I thought it would be. I did wish the rice was a bit crispier. My two other non-vegan friends found the texture a bit off putting which is understandable! Cacio E Pepe I could not believe my tastebuds that this was vegan! There is a faint taste of cashew but the creaminess was sufficient and I liked that I didn't get the feeling of heaviness after eating heavy cream pasta. Dan Dan Noodles This was everyone's favourite dish - so much flavour and spice! Everyone appreciated that Mila does not play around when it comes to appreciating a true spice level in the noodles. I did personally find it a bit oily for my liking but this is a personal preference and I think it was a perfect level of flavour for everyone else. Cold Udon This was a last minute add on as we weren't sure if we had enough food. Unfortunately when it arrived, I was very full already and could only have a couple bites. The flavour is tangy and refreshing and the noodles were cooked to the perfect level of chewiness. I do think though that this dish was the most plain in terms of complexity. Overall, the vibes were immaculate and service was fantastic. I would say cost-wise was slightly high considering the nature of the food we were eating but nonetheless, I can definitely see myself returning when I'm craving plant-based food. I had some time to kill before heading back south on the Amtrak bus down the street. Just a snack shall do. Glancing through the menu, I spotted the karaage bao. I was a bit sus about the lime-kewpie mayo as citrus in mayo sounded weird. The server alleviated my fears of any odd flavors so I went for it. Super tasty yet a bit hearty in texture. This was my second time in MILA, I was so impressed by their food the first time that I had to come back. Their entire menu is plant-based, and as someone who is not vegan... I LOVED IT! Fun fact, they are operated by Virtuous Pie!! I love the food here and the service, but I should say that it is a bit overpriced. They do have happy hour from 2-5pm, I think the next time I visit would be around that time. Their space is very elegant with lots of plants and big windows and can fit a big group size. They also have an upper area that can be booked for private events. Now lets about their menu... My biggest highlight here were their drinks, specifically their After The Rain cocktail. It had grapefruit rosemary cordial, tequila blanco, mint, and soda. If you are someone who likes sweeter drinks, this one's for you!! I was a bit disappointed with their lavender drink, it did not have a strong lavender flavour. The first time I came here I was a fan of their Tuna Crispy Rice sushi which has watermelon akami tuna, sushi rice, lime kewpie mayo, green onion, and sesame seeds. I was in Vancouver for the weekend and this place was a couple blocks from our stay. We choose to eat here because everything here is plant based which is perfect for my wife and friends who are all vegan (I'm not vegan though). From what I understanding the menu changes from time to time but is focused on creating vegan versions of international dishes. Before coming to this location I was hoping to try there Wellington but unfortunately that dish isn't on their current version. Since it was our first time we bought a variety of dishes on the menu to get a feel for what this place offers. After trying all of the dishes we order I was a big fan of the Karage Boa and the Aburi Lox Oshi since they super flavorful unfortunately the other dishes were sort of basic. They all tasted yummy but compare to the other two mentioned the rest didn't have nearly has much wow factor. Overall the food was great and the staff was amazing. William our server checked up on us multiple times and was very helpful. If we're ever in the area we will most likely come back! For the non-vegans reading this the food was yummy and worth a try. MILA's entire menu is plant based. They are operated by the same team as Virtuous Pie, which has a location just around the corner here in Chinatown as well as in Portland (where I am from). The restaurant's atmosphere is lovely - very bright with lots of windows and fun paint colors. Each table had fresh flowers on it, which was a nice touch. There is a mix of table and booth seating, as well as a bar. It was not very busy when I went for a Wednesday lunch. Only one staff member was working, but she was attentive, and things came out in a very reasonable time. It's tough to place a finger on any other theme to MILA's menu besides being plant based, as they have sushi, bao buns, potatoes, salads, hummus and kebab, burgers, pasta, and desserts. We ordered the smashed potatoes to share. We could've used more of the mustard dipping sauce but I didn't ask so maybe they would have provided it. I got the mushroom and sausage tagliatelle. Not sure what kind of mushroom (button or crimini, perhaps) and I believe they use Tomorrow products for their meat replacement. I tried a bite of the watermelon sushi with crispy rice which was tasty. Everything was delicious, very flavorful. I admit I felt a bit of sticker shock at the prices, although I did feel this way at most places in Vancouver, so perhaps it is simply how Canada is. They have a happy hour from 2-5pm daily so perhaps that is a good time to go if you are price conscious. Looks like they host brunches, trivia nights, and wine Wednesdays. It's difficult to think of a criticism of this meat free restaurant. The menu is imaginative, preparation of the food is exceptional, the staff friendly (really friendly), not hurried with the ambience warm and comforting. We are from "out of town" (Toronto) and were joined by friends who live in Van City. The stunning reviews were the nudge for them to book a table. Coincidentally, I'd been here before and it was wonderful then. Many menu choices were alternative to meat in their creation and some less so. Everything was tasty, fresh and clean. The food tasted great! I got the smash burger with a side of the arugula salad. Service was nice and friendly but our food took a very long time to come out. I really liked both the burger and salad but my only complaint is that the portion was pretty small. The salad was in a really small bowl. Plus, I noticed that the portion size differed a lot depending on what you order. My friends got 2 different pastas and one had a generous portion with a side of bread and the other one was quite small and my friend finished eating it in maybe 5 minutes. We tried their okonomiyaki roll and aburi lox oshi, red curry dumplings and mushroom tagliatelle, and tried both the rice pudding and peanut butter cup pie. The sushi was interesting, I preferred the oshi. The okonomiyaki just had a little too much sauce, in my opinion. The dumplings were a wonderful texture, I loved that the skin was chewy. The tagliatelle was a bit of a miss for me. Not sure what they put in their pesto, but I don't think it was your typical basil pesto. The noodles were soft, and some were still stuck together. The peanut butter cup pie was very good, and the rice pudding wasn't too sweet. That being said, we were quite full by the end of the meal, so it was hard to finish. I was with my mom in Chinatown and we needed a place to go to for lunch, so we ended up at MILA where the entire menu is plant based. I ordered the Aburi Lox Oshi and my mom ordered the "Fish" Tacos. This was my third time coming to this restaurant; the Aburi Lox Oshi blows my mind, every single time I order it. It's just amazing how they manage to make plants taste like things that...aren't plants! If you blindfolded me and then fed me the Aburi Lox Oshi, I might actually believe I was eating Aburi salmon oshi. The fish tacos too...feed it to me blindfolded and I'd never know that it wasn't fish. I love this place so much. I was a bit disappointed though to look at the menu and see that they had removed the "Fish" sandwich from the menu. I had ordered that the very first time I came to the restaurant and it was one of my favourites on the menu. Really hope they'll bring it back one day! Hello hello Mila!! I had A BAD attitude arriving. I was grumpy. But my husband got me laughing and I decided to do the "International Tasting," to lift my mood (it was our 16 year anniversary, and I wanted to spend it smiling and happy!!!) Well let me just say Mila turned out to be one of the best choices on our trip to Vancity. The hostess offered us a choice of table, we got there for a late lunch, around 1pm. Bri was our server, and she was TERRIFIC. My husband got the Down in Mexico cocktail: 1800 Coconut Tequila, pineapple infused tequila, Cointreau, coconut syrup, lime. He absolutely loved it. I decided I would alter my mood after a particularly hilarious moment we shared and ordered the "International Flight." Now let me say two things: One - the music is utterly fabulous and TWO - I've never had full sized drinks in a flight. When it came I thought HOLD UP!!! The flight was on a gorgeous stone board, beautiful glasses and my Mezcal Old Fashioned had the BIG cube!! So I had THREE drinks come lol that DEFINITELY elevated my mood after the shot!!! Then I moved onto the Paloma, which was fabulous and finally the Mezcal Old Fashioned which was amazing, but I should not have let it melt so much because it got watered down. MY fault, not Mila's. Food. Oh the food!!!! My husband wanted to order the Smashed Chips: miso garlic butter, hot honey aioli. I had one or two because they were greasy (not my jam,) but they were nice. The dipping sauce was fabulous. We were SUPER hungry and just decided to order one thing at a time. Next up was the Ocean Roll: watermelon akami tuna, wakame seaweed, tamarind mayo, avocado, cucumber, sesame. Preface that I literally cannot stand watermelon. TRULY dislike the flavor. Not a hint of watermelon flavor in it. Just pure goodness. Absolutely delicious with a true "sushi" texture. Iove and miss fish, so it didn't gross me out as a vegan, so the texture could for someone who doesn't like that aspect of veganism (texture replicated to that of animal products.) The flavors were phenomenal. Just truly delicious. Next up, we went crazy and ordered the rest of the sushi dishes because we were hungry and they all looked too good NOT to. We had the Aburi Lox Oshi: carrot lox, aburi sauce, shiso, serrano. Wow. The Aburi sauce is kind of torched and warm and it literally melts in your mouth. Talk about a dish that represents the balance of salt, fat, acid and heat. This has it. Not too spicy because they give you slivers of serrano but delightful. A culinary joy. And the carrot lox were a winner to me. The Lemongrass Futomaki: lemongrass soy curls, thai basil, tamarind mayo, pickled carrot, cucumber, nuoc cham; came next. Again rich in flavor but we'll balanced. The Lemongrass was bright and flavorful in the soy curls but not overwhelming. It's such a strong flavor and easy to over use, but it was balanced. The bright flavors of this, and the dipping sauce blew me away. Fresh and acidic and bright and balanced. A perfect dish. The final sushi we devoured was the Tuna Crispy Rice: watermelon akami tuna, sushi rice, lime kewpie mayo, green onion, sesame. My one issue with it was the pieces were large and two bite for me, and I kept dropping them and making a mess of the topping. But they were DELICIOUS. I'm blown away by the use of watermelon as tuna. It SO works!!! We finished with the Smash Burger & Kale salad: double patty, cheddar, roasted garlic aioli, iceberg, onion, roma, pickle, brioche, smashed chips or kale salad. First let me say that I'm VERY picky about my kale. Especially my Kale Caesar. This was phenomenal. Just delicious. Everything was fresh and perfectly balanced. The Smash Burger, I anticipated greasy and heavy but it wasn't. It matched my FAVORITE vegan burger at Monty's in LA. Now I only have to come to BC for it since I'm not a fan of LA but I LOVE Vancity!!!! While my husband used the restroom, I snuck in a drink order of a Winona Forever: house-made arancello, mezcal, orgeat. Oh my heavens was it good. So creamy and dreamy!!! Bri, and the hostess were shooting some drinks by the window and I asked what they were. They were potential holiday drinks for the winter. They offered us a taste of one (I can't tell you what it was, or I'd have to kill you!!! Secret. Top secret!!) and we gave honest feedback. Based on the drinks and food hall will have a VERY tasty winter drink and food menu. I only wish MILA were closer. Absolutely excellent in every way!! DO come here for elevated vegan food and drinks. Mila is outstanding! The food, flavours and service left us speechless. The Dan Dan Noodles were very good and spicy. We relished the taste explosion. We also got the Tofu Bao Buns and it was packed with umami. The Aburi Lox Oshi Sushi Roll was amazing! Once more, the vegan sushi was shockingly tasty . We came here with my friend based on its high rating. We were excited to try out their plant-based menu, but we left disappointed. When we arrived, the restaurant was pretty empty. The receptionist brought us to a tiny table on an aisle, so we asked for better seating, but they told us the setting was pre-set on the other tables. However, we noticed the groups that came after were all 2-people, and they got those 4-seating tables. So if you have a seating standard, then it should be consistence applying to everyone. It was an unfair experience, and we that we were not valued. The subsequent disappointment was a lousy service. As a general rule of thumb, the server describes each dish when serving it on the table. Customers would like to know how the kitchen prepares the dish in general. If you lack experience, at least mention the name of the dishes or ask customers if they have any questions. The more interested you are in them, the more likely they will take an active interest in you and your business. There is plenty of room for improvement. Hopefully, they could consider our honest feedback. We had not written out such a lower ranking for a while. Generally, we wanted to like this place, but unfortunately, it didn't meet our expectations. The food itself was decent, but they didn't compensate for the disappointing services. Food: 3/5 Can Try! The food was outstanding (pina colada pancakes and the focaccia sandwich on the weekend brunch menu). We are from here so we are familiar with the drug problem in Vancouver but visitors should be aware that the neighbourhood is super sketchy. People were shooting up across the street in plain sight. It's a bit incongruous with a $20 sandwich. The space itself was lovely and smelled very fresh and clean. Hostess was lovely, guy from the kitchen who brought out our food was great, server was... a bit much. It was an uncomfortable level of enthusiasm. Note: the front door is so wide (i believe due to the security strip) that it scraped across my partner's foot when he opened it. I'm sure he's not the first. Many expletives were shared with the block as he hopped around in pain. All in all, the great menu isn't going to be enough to bring us back. Sorry. :( read more

Totally vegan, always nice to be order anything on the menu. Especially when the food is as good as MILA serves, almost want to return to Vancouver just to eat here again. After an easy mile walk from our hotel it was nice to see a good selection of beverages to quench our thirst; we had a mix of hard ciders and beers which went down easy. For starters we shared 2 appetizers, Lemongrass Futomaki and Karage Bao. Both included pickled vegetables and (differently flavored) mayos which complemented each other well. Our mains were the Black & Bleu Burger, Dan Dan Noodles, and Char Siu tacos. It would be impossible to pick a favorite, all were well seasoned and a pleasure to eat. A few months ago, we came in at around 3:30 pm on a Saturday expecting this place to have a wait. To our surprise, there were only a few patrons. I truly do not understand why. MILA is incredible. The space is beautiful and airy during the day with elements of raw materials like metal and concrete surrounded by light pastel designs. The table set up is also really cool and different than I've seen before. Our server/hostess was very kind and lovely. We had just gone to a really pricey, fancy vegetarian restaurant last night where we didn't feel this warm and friendly vibe, so that was appreciated. Onto the food, everything was absolutely delicious. We started with the smashed potatoes, which were perfectly crisp and toasty. Just what we needed on a frigid day. Next up was the Lemongrass Futomaki, which was a take on vegan sushi we've never had before. I wish more places would put soy curls in rolls. The accompanying sauce was fresh and balanced. Then we had the Tuna Crispy Rice, and that was also a really smart and creative dish unlike anything we've had. We've been wanting to try watermelon tuna and it truly lived up to the hype at MILA. For our main, we split the Wellington. We honestly just wanted to try this because we are big Gordon Ramsay fans, but it was even better than we thought it would be. It truly had a convincing meaty flavor and texture with a perfectly flakey crust and the best gravy. The rutabaga purée was the perfect pairing with this meal as it was light but filling. The brussels and leeks were also perfectly toasted. We closed the meal out with the Peanut Butter Cup Pie and the Black Forest Ganache Tart. This is where I transcended. It was like nothing I've ever tasted. I don't even really like chocolate, but wow the Black Forest Ganache Tart was so incredible I forgot that about myself lol. I went here for a staff holiday party and it's a new favourite! The food was nothing short of incredible. The pasta was amazing as was the sushi and the potatoes. In fact, I don't remember there being a dish I didn't love. They have super unique cocktails as well. Already booked another dinner for a pals bday! read more

Stopped in for drinks and quick snack while visiting Vancouver. It was a fairly busy Sunday night for them it seemed, so we sat at the bar which is what I wanted for a quick stop in. I ordered the Japanese Breakfast cocktail which was very unique but bright and yummy with a foamy top like a sour. It's green tea, toasted sesame, and vodka with a candied ginger garnish. My partner got a beer on tap. We ordered the Karaage bao and I was impressed! The tofu was perfectly delicious. Crunchy exterior, but juicy flavorful inside. Insane. The cucumbers and slaw keep it refreshing. Definitely recommend. I wish I could come back and eat this all the time! read more

This place was incredible. Ive been here twice so far. Enjoyed the fattoush tacos and tuna crispy rice (not pictured) and aburi lox oshi (not pictured) the first time I came. The second time I ordered the smash burger, which was what the doctor ordered, really tasty. But those potatoes were amazing. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside (how did they do that). I also ordered the Harry of NY mocktail which was pretty good. And tbh it felt like an alcoholic drink to me, I could only take one sip at a time. These peeps make vegan taste like not vegan. Which is amazing. Impressive. Oh and the manager kindly brought our pup some water. He was so grateful. Thanks so much. I know I'll be back. read more

Mila, I love what you stand for and your charitable heart, I love that you're sticking it out in that neighbourhood and your staff are sweet. The food.... - The crispy tuna are crazy good - crispy warm contrasting the cold watermelon tuna - so nicely done and each bite only $3 during happy hour, nice! - The potatoes were a hit with my husband but he's never met a potato he didn't like... they were essentially fried potatoes with aioli sauce... good & filling snack food I suppose. - At $24 the feature mushroom Wellington was underwhelming... and although the flavours were good, the puff pastry & mushroom texture was as if it had just come out of a microwave - soggy and limp. The accompanying crispy Brussels were fabulous. - At $14 the Black Forest tart was a disappointment; the cherries were good and I was glad it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet but it wasn't great. Thank you for supporting Indigenous businesses such as your sparkling wine, it was really great. I know you're struggling with staffing... the 15 min wait once we were seated was the start of it, and although they're sweet it was like amateur hour at the improv - but maybe that's just this upcoming generation(?!) Super casual, no attention to detail or social cues, unorganized and again, sweet. Your music was great, your ambiance is pleasant. Our waiter was so kind and helpful - he truly made up for the mediocre food and ambiance. The restaurant is really nothing special and the tables felt just one step up from a fast food joint. We tried the smash burger, the sausage and mushroom pasta, the blue burger and an assortment of all their sushi. It was all okay but nothing that any of us felt that we would return for. We've had much better vegan sushi at other places in the city. I've wanted to try this place for a while and I'm glad I did - but there are just too many options out there to make me want to try it again. read more
