I'd browsed through the Chickpea website a few times already and I'd had my eye on the Hafla experience for awhile. Finally managed to get over there and try it. Went with my family for a bday brunch. So for anyone who doesn't know, the Hafla experience is an AYCE experience. Not the kind where everyone in the restaurant is walking around, selecting all of their foods to put on their plates and then walking back to their own table with it. For this experience, each person chooses one main entree for themselves and then the restaurant brings a whole bunch of other dishes to accompany that main entree. Everyone at the table has to participate in the Hafla. You cannot have 3 people ordering Hafla, and 4 people ordering from the regular A la Carte menu. It's meant to be a family style sharing experience. Oh my goodness. What an experience this was. They brought sooo many dishes to the table. If I could make one suggestion to the restaurant to improve the experience for their customers, it would be to get bigger tables for the Hafla! Holy smokes...there was sooo much food on the table. At one point, the waitress came out with some baskets of pita bread to go with our food and asked where to put them. Ummm...wherever you can find space?! We had lots of leftovers by the end of the meal. I think my daughter said she counted at least 15 boxes of leftovers! This wasn't just All You Can Eat. This was More Than You Can Eat, cuz we were all super full from everything that they brought to us, and we never needed to ask for anything to be refilled as we couldn't even finish what they'd brought to us initially. What a feast! As for the food itself. I think the one thing that kinda fell short a bit was the Chickpea fries. I'd had these once before from their food truck a few years ago. I really enjoyed it back then. This time however, the Chickpea fries were not as impressive. Everything else on the table though was excellent. I don't know where else in Vancouver you can get a plant based AYCE meal, and this one was very impressive. Some standouts for me were the Cauliflower of Life, Hatzil Baladi (charred eggplant), and Baba Ganoush. A few of us ordered some drinks and those were pretty impressive as well. My daughter's Lavender Lychee Lemonade looked so lovely and refreshing. For myself I ordered a Chai Latte made with oat milk, and that was excellent. Oh, and you know how sometimes restaurants have menus on their websites and the menus don't match what's on the printed menu in the actual restaurant? Well this was the first time I was actually happy to see that the menu in the restaurant was different cuz online it says that the Hafla costs $42 per person but when we got to the restaurant it turned out to be only $40 per person. In this day and age, when things are usually only ever getting more expensive, it was a real treat to see that something had actually gone down in price for once! Highly recommend this place. I love this restaurant and have never had an experience here that made me want to leave a negative review, but last night came very close. We came in around 9:00 PM, ordered quite a bit of food, and were enjoying our meal as usual. Around 9:45 PM, our server approached us with takeout boxes and told us we needed to be out in four minutes because they closed at 10:00 PM and she doesn't get paid after that. I understand wanting to leave on time and be compensated fairly for your work, but at that point there were still 15 minutes left before closing. Even after I pointed out the time, we continued to feel rushed throughout the remainder of our meal. As someone who has worked in the service industry for over 10 years, I could never imagine treating guests this way. I completely understand that staff want to finish their shifts and go home, but that is not the customer's responsibility. Rushing people out before closing, especially without any prior warning, can completely change the dining experience. The food was still fantastic, and my love for this restaurant remains, but this was one of the most disappointing and disrespectful service experiences I've had in a very long time. I'm genuinely saddened that an experience like this happened at a place I have always enjoyed and recommended to others. read more

We just stumbled on an amazing gem of an organic restaurant with an amazing breadth of vegan options. Most important advice - come hungry because the portions are huge. True to the name - hummus & chickpea fries are at the center of many of the dishes that combines multiple options on one plate. I've never had oyster mushrooms that were so delicious. A vegan restaurant that really surprised me in the best way. I went with vegetarian friends and they loved it -- and so did I. The dishes have a nice Mediterranean spin on brunch, and everything we tried was fresh and flavorful. I was on Main Street with a friend. We were looking for a vegetarian restaurant, and after looking at few places, decided to eat at Chickpea. I've eaten at the food truck before, but this was my first time at the restaurant. Nothing too remarkable about the space. I ended up trying two things: - Chickpea Fries: Good. Crispy, bordering on a bit too hard, but tasty. - Calamachick Burrito: Good. Tempura oyster mushrooms were really good, and packed tight into the burrito. It was big enough that I decided to only eat half and kept the other half for another meal. Service on the other hand was not great. We were there at around 2:30pm, so maybe between the busy meal times, but I got the feeling the servers just didn't want to be there. It wasn't busy at that time of day, but the servers made no effort to be friendly or attentive. So overall, the food was good, but the service wasn't. This restaurant was recommended to me by non-vegan friends so you know it's good because it makes even meat-eaters excited to come back. The interior of the restaurant has a cute rustic vibe. It could be crowded if busy, and the food takes some time, but judging from the food alone I would definitely order here multiple times. The menu is full of new food names as I am not familiar with a lot of the mediterranean dishes. However, the menu is pretty straightforward and has cute images to help you decide what you want. The chickpea steak tasted like well done meat while still being chewy and while the poached egg didn't necessarily taste like egg, it's delicious in its own way. Their service was pretty good - fast and friendly. For drinks we got their non-alcohoic pina colada, it was really good! Exactly what you expect from a pina colada. For appetizers I got their chickpea fries which were delicious! It came with a sweet and spicy sauce which was delicious. The fries itself were not super crispy but they were thick and flavourful. The fries were also gluten-free. For mains, they have you choose a style and then choose a main. So for the style I went with their rice bowl with shawarma at the main. The quantity of the food was HUGE!! Definitely bang for your buck. The shawarma was also gluten-free and were made of soy curls, sautéed onions, curry, sumac & coriander. For someone who is not vegan, this was pretty good. It didn't taste the same but the flavours were really good. My friend got the falafel platter which was really good as well! A casual spot for vegetarian/vegan food. Service was friendly and prompt. The aesthetic varies a bit depending on where you're seated. We went for the Platter (with falafel) + a side of crispy cauliflower. The platter comes with pita, hummus, salad, and chickpea fries. Then Carrot Cake for dessert. - Chickpea fries were great. Though the cook wasn't completely even - some were hard crispy, some soft. - The falafel were well done - fluffy and soft on the inside with a nice crisp outside. Paired with a good dollop of fantastic hummus. - I really liked the cauliflower, but my companion not so much. I'd say it's worth trying for $4. - Carrot cake - moist with good flavour, but not overly large. The coconut whipped cream it came with tasted a little funky. Kinda wish we'd tried one of the baklava. Great value and more than enough food for two people. Not sure what the Hafla sharing menu would have over the platter but it's $42 per person vs $26 total for the platter. I have a hard time understanding the "...never been to a vegan restaurant..." or "...not using real eggs..." low reviews. Sort of like if I went to a steakhouse and marked the restaurant down for not having great vegetarian food. With that out of the way, we stumbled upon Chickpea and would rate it as some of the best vegan (or vegetarian) food we have eaten. We shared the pickled veggie plate to start with, a very good start it was. And things only got better. For mains, I had the Kasum Platter and found the sauce subtle, very tasty, and worth a return trip to Vancouver to have again. The chickpea fries were a nice surprise, definitely preferable to fried potatoes. Partner had the Dalori Burrito, and although less willing to pay airfare for a return visit just to order again, found it delicious. Pricing was very fair, especially considering the quality of the food. Very good service and sitting outside with great weather made for excellent people (and dog) watching. When you cut it open, the "yolk" comes out like a real egg... definitely didn't expect that and it was a pleasant surprise. Portions were large but it was a bit pricey. I have been to chickpea many times. I have seen it expanding and that is just because of the yummy ,fresh, super gorgeous vegan food. And the quantity of food is huge that small appetite people can make two meals out of one. I love how the fries are cubes and not long strips. Vegan meat in any of the dishes goes so well that you want to keep eating. My puff pastry was so crunchy and good mix of veggies. Please try some of their cocktails as the herbs and garnishing is so unique to each drink. The vibe is chilled and at busy hours, it does get crowded and loud but most of the times it's quite and easy. My favourite part is the beautiful and inclusive environment of the whole place. Arrived around 9pm for a late dinner on a weekend evening. It's a very Main Street vibe place with plants, some kitschy stuff, posters on the wall, and a big mural. Right off the bat, my dinner mate and I could see that the place was noticeably understaffed in front of house, seeing how many people were dining in -- not overwhelming, given the hour, but clearly the two people working could have used an extra hand or two. There were visibly more people in back of house. We were given menus and a bottle of tap water without a word, and the server shuffled off before we could say "boo". The food was... all right, but absolutely could've been better. We shared tapas, chickpea fries, and a falafel wrap. The labneh made of cultured coconut was decent, though a bit bland. Oddly, you have to ask for pita and pay extra, as the labneh doesn't already come with it, which I find strange; I guess they expect you to just eat it by itself with a spoon? The pickled vegetables were a disappointment. Acrid and overly salty in contrast to the labneh, though perhaps that was just this batch and they're not always like that. The wrap itself was good, tasty falafel that weren't heavy, had a nice crispy exterior and made the wrap feel very filling. The novel chickpea fries are definitely the type of thing that are great fresh out of the fryer, but eat them quick... as they cooled, they became gummy and clumpy, and extremely unpleasant. I also question the wisdom of dousing the fries in the sweet chili sauce. My personal preference would be to put it on the side as the sauce is cloyingly sweet. The server completely forgot to bring our drinks. We tried flagging down the server three or four times in vain, but ended up having to leave earlier than we expected anyway. She came back with takeout containers, which she tossed on the table, again wordlessly. When she came back with the machine and tried to charge us for the drinks and I pointed out we never got them, she looked at me with an annoyed face, then stared at our table like the meme of that lady with the math formulas whizzing around her head, looking as if she was willing the empty glasses to appear on the table. After a few seconds of uncomfortable silence, she finally conceded with a very quietly mumbled "well, sorry" and then handed me the machine and walked away. That's the kind of overall experience where I honestly struggle with tipping, but again, seeing that maybe the whole thing was down to them scrambling, we gave her the benefit of the doubt. Yum! This is the kind of vegan food that makes me consider going vegan, haha! I got the Calamachik Platter, the Chickpea Fries are so so so good! Salad was also super yummy and they have great hummus too. I ordered again a few weeks later but tried the falafel platter - the falafel was pretty dry and not very flavourful. Didn't visit in person so I can't say much about the interior of the restaurant. They don't seem to use peanuts in the restaurant, and were helpful on the phone when I had questions about my allergy. Amazing vegan food!!! We had the eggs benny with carrot lox. Wow! I will re-order this dish for sure. Eggs replacement is with chickpea. The latkes was made with crispy potato, zucchini and dill. Comes with a mega sized mixed greens. Love this dish very much! We also had the schnitzel made with firm tofu. The bread crumbs coating was scrumptious. Texture was delicious. We made this into a platter and the hummus was amazing. It was overly garlicky like most places which I can totally appreciate. Again, the winning texture..., it was so soft and creamy. Also came with sliced yams and very fresh avocados. French toast - this was too sweet for us and we definitely hope restaurants as a whole could take it down a notch when it comes to sweetness especially because this was also an item on the kids menu. I don't think we (as adults) should make kids think that food should be super sweet as we are all witnessing kids obesity on the rise in North America. For date night, we decided to go to the Chickpea restaurant on Main Street (his second time, my first). A quick call ahead had us assured there were some tables open for walk-ins, and off we went! For COVID, there were barriers set up, contact info required, and QR menus in which our phones refused to cooperate and we had to ask for a menu instead (they wipe down the menus after each use). If you are going for the Chickpea experience, the waitress recommended we choose our mains first, then decide how we want it served (i.e. pita, salad, hummus plate, platter). He chose the Feta/Hummus special, and after much indecision I went with the Kasum Platter (fried cauliflower and fries sealed the deal). It is only looking at the yelp page now, that I realized the restaurant is classified as Mediterranean/Vegan. I just knew the food was vegan, and on a whole was a good experience. Standard green side salad, tasty fries, hummus, and satisfying my craving for fried cauliflower. It seems like a lot of vegan restaurants follow the trend of making their foods infused with a lot of different spices and spiciness. I was doing great until I realized a lot of the fries had been sprinkled with red pepper flakes. I ate about half until I realized my stomach feeling a bit achy, and I packed up the rest of the fries (and some leftover fried cauliflower and mushrooms) to-go. Making a note to myself in the future to ask the staff which dishes are spicy, or try to minimalize the spicy level. Overall I found the Mediterranean Vegan experience quite unique, and I'm interested in trying other restaurants on the Main Street strip. The best vegan breakfast that I've had in a while. The "egg" Benedict potato latkes dish was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS and everything I want in a dynamic and thoughtful meal, even the side salad was full of freshness and flavor in every bite. The waffles were nowhere near as good. They arrived very cold and hard and tasted like stale Eggo's from the freezer. I would not order again. The service was okay, when you sit on the patio they have you order and pay from your phone, with little to no human interaction besides dropping off the food. It felt very impersonal (especially since we were only of the 2 people dining at the restaurant) as it would have been nice to have a human server we could have asked for recommendations. Especially considering the phone order app asks for a 15% minimum tip. The ambiance had a casual, laid back hippie vibe inside with a street-side patio in the front. My wife & me went to Chickpea Restaurant for lunch last weekend. She had the Big Ol Burger , whilst I had the Grilled Eggplant Sandwich. The Big Ol Burger was huge with Chickpea patty, huge Onion Ring , Salad & French fries. The Chickpea Patty was disappointing as it lacked other vegetables like peas, carrots, cauliflower. Otherwise the Burger was tasty & very filling. The Grilled Sandwich was excellent both in Taste & also presentation & had a salad & sauteed Hash Brown -very good. (We also packed a Haloumi Burger, Grilled Eggplant etc to take away). Overall the Restaurant had a great ambience ,was packed full & service was 5 Star by the lovely lady staff. This Restaurant is pure vegetarian (which we like) & had many fine dishes . The accompaniments were a bit short - only Tomato Ketchup & lightly spiced Chilli oil. No hot sauce etc- which many of us prefer. I hope the Owners can redo the Chickpea patty in the Burger & offer more spicy sauces -to further enhance the taste . We came for brunch upon opening on a Monday, and they had one guy serving the floor. With a big rush of people, they were definitely short-staffed. It took quite a long time to get our order in, and even longer for the food to come out (nearly an hour from being seated to getting our food). The food was monstrously portioned and delicious. Don't discount the buzz! Non-vegans and vegetarians alike will appreciate the high quality of the food served here. When I first visited Vancouver, I looked up a few vegan/vegetarian eateries to eat at. Last time I passed by, I intended to stop in, but circumstances intervened and I was unable to do so. Be wary of the parking situation; the area has a few meters and there are some zones where you can't really park during rush hours. Nevertheless, I came here for the hummus and had the shawarma platter, and I loved everything on it. The chickpea fries were my fave. Simply put, there were much too many fries for me to consume, but they were fire. There's enormous portions, and the prices are really cheap. Nonetheless, I like the chickpea fries immensely. My wife thought it'd be good to expand our horizons with trying different foods especially restaurants that are vegan. I was a bit apprehensive at first and thought, as long as it tastes good, I'm game. We decided to come here and boy was I in for a treat. I had a dish off their all day breakfast called the Malawach. It was such a savoury puff pastry with basically everything you could think of. Avocado, tomatoes, humus, yams, tzatziki and a vegetarian sausage and a side of their home fries aka hashbrowns. Wow! Was it ever big and it was so good! If you decide to have this and eat it with your hands, it's definitely not a first date meal because it's just sloppy goodness. The waiter remarked that I was the first to eat it by hand. I replied "How else are you supposed to eat it? Malawach me eat this whole thing! We also had beets, humus and their oh so delicious chick pea fries. When you order them, make sure you ask for the sauce on the side otherwise, it's slathered in it.
