Returned for dim sum with a group of 6. Many of the dim sum dishes are portioned in 3's so this was the perfect group size. I was the only veg-inclined person in the group and didn't realize some of the others didn't know the place was fully vegetarian before arriving, but it didn't seem like anyone was disappointed with the vegetarian offerings. We tried a large variety of dishes, and I won't list all of them because I don't think I'd even remember everything. My favourites were the walnut custard buns, the pea tips rice sheet roll, and the new tapioca pudding (I'd never tried this kind of baked tapioca pudding before and I loved the texture). They also brought out fresh baked barbeque buns which were nice and soft. Others really liked the vegetarian chicken nuggets and black truffle mushroom dumplings, so I think it's safe to say everything is pretty good. I felt like I ate a lot, but at the end, after they split the bill 6 ways, everyone only paid $22 (before tip). So if you go with a big group you can try lots of things at a pretty good price. They did try to push some dishes on us, but I think they were just trying to be helpful with most of us not being familiar with how to order for dim sum, and their patience was appreciated. read more

Po Kong is entirely vegetarian. They are across from Sun Bo Kong Vegetarian (dim sum). I ordered a single dish, because the price says it's a big portion. Pan-fried sticky rice is something I always wanted to try. The pan-fried sticky rice is less starchy than the steamed. Keeping its shape and not so sticky. It has pieces of red gluten (imitating Chinese sausage) and pickled vegetables. Here and there are small chunks of sugar, which were rather unpleasant. It's a dish meant to be shared. I took the leftover to go. My concern about vegetarian restaurants is the quantity of deep-fried dishes, soy and gluten content in their menu. read more

I've been coming here for 20 years, and the food is consistently good. We like to come for the vegan dim sum on weekends. Food comes out fast, hot, and fresh, and their process is efficient. Service has always been friendly. This time we especially like the hot and sour soup. It was a red soup (I think they used fermented chilli instead of white pepper), and it was surprisingly rich tasting. read more

We always go to either po kong or sun po kong across the street for chinese vegetarian food. Our fav is always the deep-fried mushroom. Po kong has deep fried oyster mushrooms, and sun po kong has deep-fried abalone mushrooms. Both equally delicious. Their dishes are very hit or miss. This time, we also ordered their birds nest stir fry veggies. The picture showed a deep-fried basket made of taro. When it came, it was vermicelli that was dyed green. We even asked if it was crispy, and they said yes, but when it came, it was a soggy mess. Never again. We also ordered the pan-fried bean curd wrap. It wasn't very crispy, which was disappointing. Tourist Trap! I don't know how they got such great reviews, when we arrived literally no one was there, the ambiance was good, service was worst and food was terrible looks good though. Very expensive and they charge you for box and bags too and they don't, tell about it. Tea which is served in the beginning also charged! I brought the rest of my family to try this place for Father's Day. Healthy and all vegetarian dim sum is quite a cool concept. I liked things overall though you have to get used to it if you are used to meat dim sum. I find nobody knows Chinese food even has a vegetarian branch. Here are my favorites: - eggplant and crispy tofu skin- done very well - crispy tofu with "meat sauce" - done very well - deep fried seaweed enoki - this was the BOMB and my absolute favorite. Others agreed with me it was SO good. - the standard dim sum like har gau and shrimp balls was actually done fairly well. - Lo Mai fan or sticky rice in lotus leaf was not bad. - other crispy tofu skin things were all done very well Some disappointments - tables have no Lazy Susan's - the Lau Sa bau or egg yolk Baos were done with something nutty and didn't taste like the originals. Still going here after all these years! The staff are great, the food is deliciously dependable and it's a comfortable and enjoyable dining experience. Our favourites are the spicy green beans, sticky rice, any dumplings, gai lan and wonton soup. FYI - They charge for using credit cards, currently 1.5% I think. If you're looking for a delicious vegetarian dim sum feast head here! Ask for soy, mustard and hot sauce as condiments to tailor it up. This was the last vegetarian restaurant that we tried while in Vancouver. We recently went to NY and tried a vegetarian dim sum place...we were tired and our first choice did not have dim sum late in the day so we settled for another location. Let's just say this was to redeem that attempt to find good vegetarian dim sum. This place did not disappoint. I pretty much ordered anything with the word dumpling in the description. Highlights were the siu mei, Shanghai style, snow fungus, and pan fried potstickers. Great selections and service was pretty fast. We came, we over did it, and we paid for it! The place is very much family style dining with round tables and layers of table cloths. We came on a recommendation (not a personal one but for Erin Ireland's insta page - check it out). We ordered very similar as she did. For dim sum, we ordered Siu Mei Dumplings. Huge flavor and pretty large but lacked a sauce. We also go the Black Truffle Mushroom Dumplings. HUGE! Great amount of truffle, but the mushroom filling needed to be chopped more. It was big bite full of mushroom which overpowered everything. For our mains, we go Bean Curd Skin Rolls w/ Black Bean Sauce and it was fantastic. The bean curds melted in your mouth and the black bean sauce was the perfect amount of salt! Highly recommend. We also go the Sweet and Sour Pineapple Delight. Probably 4 blocks of tofu perfectly sauced and fried and hella good. Again, you must get. We got the Spicey Kung Po Vegetables. Not recommending this. The vegies were not good (think celery and baby carrots chopped up small) and it came with "shrimp" which was overly chewy. The Kung Po was very faint as well. Lastly, we got the Sizzling Chow Mein which came sizzling and piled high with veg (buk choy, broccoli, more greens). I liked it but it would have been better with a sauce. We just missed dim sum, so we ordered from the dinner menu. The food isn't bad, service is great and quite attentive. There was not too many diners when we came for a late lunch/ early dinner, so it was fairly quiet. Eggplant and tofu- Eggplant was a bit under, and the sauce is very thick with cornstarch (prefer square lotus by far however). Wonton soup- Creative interpretation of wontons- there's chopped up veggies and a faux pork like cubes of meat inside. This also had lots of noodles included, and some snap peas. Delicious vegan dim sum! According to other reviews, everything is vegan unless it explicitly mentioned cheese, so we trusted that and didn't ask. They immediately bring tea to your table. We got "cannelloni with Chinese donut" which turned out to be something like a donut wrapped in a noodle with soy sauce and sesame dipping sauces. We also got spicy wontons which were very spicy if you ate the tiny peppers. We got Sui Mai, Shanghai style soup dumplings, peanut dumplings and barbecue buns. All tasty! Could definitely tell they weren't the real meat / seafood thing but we were fine with that. I liked the soup dumplings best. We added black sesame buns for dessert, which was perfect. Did you know Sun Bo Kong and Bo Kong owners are brothers?! Vegetarianism runs in the family! I've tried both several times and both are excellent. One of best vegetarian restaurant in town. If you don't need the frou frou ambience, you definitely more bang for your buck at this Chinese vegetarian resto without sacrificing taste. We came here to see they have respectful covid distance for seating. They have bright turquoise seating, which I did like. Ordered the chef's special chow mein, 3 cheeses fried rice & deep fried bean curd. The bean curd did not come with sauce, so it was drier than I expected but I did like that it tasted like meat & had a crispy 'skin'. Loved the chef's chow mein with its crispy noodles, sauce, mix of veggies & faux shrimp & meat. The 3 cheese veggie fried rice was pretty amazing & we were thankful to have ordered the large so that we could have leftovers to take home. Love this place! Staff are so kind, parking is free all over, and they can make a small to go order in no time! I came here years ago: they used to have a lunch special ohhhh miss soooo much (chili eggplant & tofu w rice), the hot pot is good but not the same and too much food for 1. The portions are huge, but I have to say I'm very disappointed with my appy this time - unlike them. I found pieces of coarse dark hair in my rolls, but also...like maybe 1 diced mushroom? Last time I ordered the large size & got loads of mushrooms. Can't really call them "mushroom rolls" if I didn't get many. I love the spicy noodles w veg: gai lan, broccoli, cauli, bok choi, a few carrots, baby corn (bleh), and pineapple (double bleh). But overall it soooo good, especially when I add sesame chili oil at home. Only wish it came with protein. Been here many times, with huge groups sharing meals to just wee il' me doing takeout. This place is my favourite dinner spot in all of Vancouver, words can not properly describe how delicious the food is. My family and I have coming here for well for twenty-five years even as it switched locations. I love Chinese cuisines however sometimes it is hard for me to properly enjoy them as I cannot eat pork or beef limiting the menu for me, however Po Kong is not only entirely vegetarian but also has options of fake meat which never disappoints. The atmosphere of the restaurant is calm and relaxing, even when full, as the place is clean and well decorated with quiet music. The staff who work their are always super professional and attentive, they always seem to be well staffed and you're never waiting long for whatever you might need during your dining experience. I've been dreaming of this place since I visited back in 2015. Fast forward to 2022, and I finally had a chance to come back to Vancouver. This restaurant is VEGAN not vegetarian, mostly everything on the menu is completely vegan except the chow mein noodles not sure if they have egg. It is NOT however gluten free. The faux meat products are made from gluten protein. So if you have celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity do not eat here. I prefer no gluten , but will make exceptions sometimes to enjoy different cuisine. My family has eaten Chinese vegan food for years and so it's sort of a tradition. I definitely recommend a few dishes to try; pineapple delight, bean curd skins, DEEP FRIED OYSTER MUSHROOMS are the best(crispy and a little spicy ). I have seen some local vegan spots make a rendition of this and I have to say this is the best one. I love this restaurant and eat here at least 4 x per year. I highly recommend if you love Asian flavours and don't want meat products. Also this is a Buddhist establishment. Never thought I'd say this in a million years, but this place is surprisingly good for a vegetarian restaurant. Sure beats all the other places in town where they serve nothing but rabbit food. Parking is available along Kingsway, as well as around the back. The interior is pistachio ice cream green. Not sure if that's intentional. Staff were friendly and helpful. As there were a bunch of us, we ordered a pile of dishes for sharing. Everything I had was good. In fact, I must say that they do a pretty good job of making stuff taste like meat, from the "steak" right down to the sweet & sour "pork" and deep fried "oysters". It's actually pretty impressive. None of the dishes are bland at all. I have no idea how they pull this off. Lastly, this place is *not* related to the Sun Bo Kong vegetarian restaurant, which is curiously located across the street. I asked our waiter about it and think I touched a nerve. In any case, the reviews for the other place seem to mention that the food items are 80% identical to here. Hmm. Yelper friend Pamela C. invited us to her birthday party here. This is my first time to Po Kong Vegetarian Restaurant. I have heard of this place from word of mouth. It was very interesting that there is a similar restaurant and same Chinese name except it was New Bo Kong Vegetarian Restaurant in English located right across the street. To me that was strange for someone to open a restaurant with 90% identical items on the menu to directly compete with them. We came as a group of 10 and we got seated at the very back of the restaurant. The decor is awfully green. Not the prettiest or fanciest decor. We ordered (detail of the dishes not the name of the dishes): Taichi soup Fried Cashier mushroom fried bean curd and vegetables fried seaweed rolls with mushrooms fried rice fried noodles Fried Taro hot pot (please refer to my pictures on the dishes that we ordered). The food came with complimentary desserts at the end. Service was ok. My favorite dishes were the free complimentary dessert which was tapioca and taro and the fried seaweed rolls with mushroom. The meal here was very delicious. I am not a vegetarian and I can see myself coming back in the near future. read more

If you're looking for home style vegetarian food - come here!! My husband and I were wandering down Kingsway looking for a vegetarian place to eat for dinner & stumbled upon this place. It was pretty packed & wait time was about 20 minutes to get a table but that's because we didn't make a reservation prior. We ordered deep fried bean curd in black bean sauce, veggie fried rice, deep fried king oyster mushrooms (almost could've passed as chicken wings too!), deep fried taro cake, & veggie stir fry in bird's nest noodles. I love that Vancouver has so many vegetarian/vegan options. For the first time EVER, my dad suggested that we get vegetarian food for dinner. I wasn't about to object, so I found this spot on Yelp that I'd been wanting to try for a while now and we were on our way there. It's located on a busy intersection - Knight and Kingsway - and there's plenty of street parking up and down both sides of the street. We came in on a Sunday night around 6pm and it was already super busy. We unfortunately didn't make a reservation and there were plenty of large party reservations ahead of us. However, my dad was willing to wait.... again, very rare. So we put our name on the list and waited maybe about 25 minutes before we got a table, which for Vancouver, isn't bad at all. We were served tea upon sitting down and since we waited a while were ready to order right away. We ordered the following: + Lo Han Chow Mein (Veggie chow mein) + Chili Eggplant and Tofu + Drumsticks + Sweet and sour tofu pineapple + Bean curd skin rolls + Spicy green beans (we actually didn't order this, it was a mistake, but our server just let us keep the dish) I was really impressed with all the dishes. My two favourites had to be the drumsticks and chili eggplant/tofu. Luckily we had leftovers, so I got to have this for lunch the next day. I probably wouldn't order the chow mein again because I feel like I could get this at any other Chinese restaurant. Service isn't your typical Asian restaurant. Po Kong is definitely a step up from the others. Servers came over and made sure we had everything, were efficient in getting our food out quickly. Impressive menu. Literally EVERYTHING on it is vegetarian. Most places have a few side dishes for vegetarian option, but this is a full on restaurant with a menu of every common Chinese item with meat substitute. Came here because another vegetarian restaurant ended up being close when we arrived so Googled up another place and actually was glad we ended up here instead. Came during lunch time so there was a dim sum menu like oh my god, I didn't know there was such thing. One of our favorite item was the crispy chicken drumstick, it was very well done and actually resemble a real drumstick except made with soy. The 5 spiced bean curd was a cold dish, but super addicting with the flavors and mushroom in the middle. I can't eat dim sum most of the time because everything has seafood in it so I was happy to have found this place. Interior is very green, or jade to be exact. Super Chinese decor, just about what you would expect at a Chinese restaurant. Highly recommend even if you're not a vegetarian because I'm not, but I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything eating here. We bring friends here who are a little freaked out about vegetarian/vegan options and they usually ask to come back after we leave. Yelpers know all the best things to eat! I came to Po Kong with Pamela C, and a bunch of other yelpers...it's best to come here with a large group so you can try loooads of different dishes! I LOVED: - Tai chi soup. This was half spinach, half egg white, but all really tasty! I love the way it is served looking like the ying-yang symbol. - Fried enoki mushroom and seaweed rolls. They were so tasty - The "very very" spicy wantons. We mostly ordered these because they had "very very" in the description. They were spicy, but not crazily spicy. The heat dies away quite quickly. - The sweet and sour dish with pineapple. The fake meat works really well with this. It really seemed like pork. - Sizzling steak with black bean sauce. It doesn't taste like steak, but who cares when it's that good!? - Thick shanghai noodles I also liked: - Chilli eggplant and tofu - Taro and veggy cutlet hotpot - it's interesting how meaty the texture is. There wasn't anything that I didn't like food-wise, just be aware, you will freeze if you need to use their washrooms. Still, I can't knock off a star for my chilly bottom. I find their food not as oily and salty as Bo Kong. Bo Kong is cheaper or at least it has larger quantities. If you want more bang for your buck go to Bo Kong because it is still good. However if you want to take your grandma who worries about cholesterol and sodium I think Po Kong is better. I don't think their dim sum is with it. Their XLB is not their strong suit and I recommend you skip it! Their BBQ buns are quite legit! Their main dishes are great though! Favorites: Chinese broccoli pan cooked- simple, mellow dish but lets the broccoli shine. Assorted cold glutens- came with four different flavors- all good. Colorful fried rice. Has carrots, green beans, veggie ham etc. Not oily and good mellow flavor. Sweet and sour pineapple. Flavorful, crunchy, and more sweet than sour. Beancurd skins with black bean sauce. Fried little packets in a savory sauce. Good flavor and texture. Does get soggy as a leftover so best eaten when its made. Many dishes don't have a lot of vegetables so be sure to order some extra sautéed veggies. read more

Came here for lunch a few weeks ago with the bf, when we were in Vancouver on vacation. We have vegetarian dim sum in NYC as well, but I was curious to see how this would stack up against what I was used to. The place is pretty...green. Literally green, as the furniture, chopsticks, and other items around the restaurant were all this uniform, light green color. I may have been over zealous as I ended up ordering 7 different items when it was just the bf and I. We ended up having to pack up 3 dim sum items as we didn't even get to try them out beacuse we were so full, but out of what we tried, I was a big fan of their fried beancurd skin roll and their steam sticky rice roll in particular. I was not too keen on their snow fungus dumpling or their rice sheet rolls with the faux shrimp in them. I thought they were overcooked to the point where they were just gummy messes, and the flavoring was just very bland. Still, they have a solid menu and if I happened to be in Vancouver again, I'd try this place out again.
