Simply stumbled on this cocktail bar and restaurant in downtown Westerly. My 4 year old daughter and I were passing through I did not have time to research before visiting. However we both felt very welcomed! This is a beautiful classic New England tavern (that I will be coming back to with my fiancee). The atmosphere, and food fare is classy and romantic. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because of how loud it was in there. Everything else was great! The food is so fresh and feels so local. The Cesar salad is iconic with the amount of cheese and is really great. Our service was pretty good! Nothing to complain about but nothing to write home about! High Hope Tavern has a simple but unique menu. You can find your basics like a burger but it may have a unique twist. They have a limited menu, but you can certainly trust that anything you order will amaze you. Every dish has a bold but great tasting flavor. I came across this restaurant on Tik Tok and knew I had to go when I saw the massive cheese pile served atop the Caesar Salad. We started with the garlic bread and oh my goodness, the marinara sauce had this amazing tang to it. I ordered the chicken Caesar salad and was thoroughly impressed. The chicken was tender and the dressing was so good. My aunt ordered the linguine and clam sauce, I tried a bite and for someone who doesn't love seafood I really enjoyed it. My boyfriend ordered the fried chicken sandwich which came with a banana pepper ranch sauce, he loved it, but it was a little too unique for my simple palette. I loved the decorations in the restaurant, it felt like an actual tavern and there was this amazing huge piece of artwork behind the bar. Great food and great dining experience! We were a party of 5 and each had an appetizer to share. All 5 were amazing. The Caesar salad, garlic bread, white beans... just amazing. The portion sizes were perfect. Our meals just as fantastic! 5 different dishes and all 5 were phenomenal. Again - perfect portions and very reasonable prices. So why not 5 stars? Prior to moving to a dining table for dinner - we were at a high top for happy hour. Service was a bit slow and sporadic. A dozen oysters took almost 20 minutes. And once at a dining table - the music and acoustics were a bit too loud. If it's full, plan to lean in or speak loudly for group conversations. High hope tavern is a beautiful spot to have a cocktail or beer at. The decor is stunning and it's located in downtown westerly, so an easy spot to stop by while in that area. I went for happy hour and they had good specials and great service. I tried the whipped ricotta and oysters when I went and both were wonderful. I also had a few local beers and each was served in the appropriate glass to maximize how it tastes. The waitress was warm And welcoming and was quick to offer suggestions and service. We stopped here during our drive home from a trip to Newport. Everything about this place is awesome. It's on Canal Street with a view of the water. The space is airy and well designed in an old building with high ceilings and nice long bar. But the food is the star! We started with the Smoked Fish Pate made of bluefish and salmon belly. It was the perfect opening dish. I had Chicken Milanese -- which is often boring, but not here! It was topped with a Mexican-style mix of grilled corn, cabbage, elote sauce, cotija and lime. Amazing. My wife had the special -- a blackfish with Beurre Blanc sauce and sautéed veggies. Also amazing. We highly recommend High Hope! read more

We come to Westerly every year for vacation and dine in Westerly and all of the surrounding areas. High Hope Tavern was truly a 5 star experience from the service to the cocktails to the food. We shared the fried grits, tuna tartare, summer risotto, and lobster roll. Everything was very seasonal and outstanding, but the real show stopper was the Mille-feuille we had for dessert. I mean just look at my picture; it tastes as good as it looks. They change the filling based on the season, but for the summer the homemade puff pastry is layered with mascarpone, mixed berries, and peaches. It's perfection. Ate at High Hope tavern for the first time last night as we were staying nearby for a quick getaway. We absolutely loved it! I had a cocktail and my husband had wine: both were great and came quickly. I had the fish and chips and my husband had the tavern burger. Everything was tasty, piping hot and the fries were nice and crispy. Service was terrific and our waitress was very nice and knowledgeable. The vibe was fun and the restaurant wasn't loud. Free public parking across the street made it easy. We look forward to coming back and trying the Caesar salad which is apparently a specialty. read more

We have returned! Finally had a chance to visit High Hope for dinner and we are still impressed with what this spot is dishing out. Our waiter was friendly and attentive, and the restaurant was a cozy spot to hang out during a chilly fall evening. For drinks I stuck to a classic Narragansett Lager and my husband got the Disco Old Fashioned. The beer tasted crisp and fresh (beer lines are clean!), while the old fashioned was simple and hit the spot. As an appetizer we went with two of each oyster they currently had available. Every oyster was very fresh and tasted great. We liked the mignonette, but it was slightly too acidic so I'd recommend only adding a tiny bit per oyster if you still want some of the briney sea flavor. For our mains I had the linguine with clams. It had a nice delicate sauce that was packed with garlic -- Just what I wanted! My husband had the hangar steak which was cooked to a perfect medium-rare. Normally he isn't about having sauces on his steak, but this was certainly an exception. It complimented the meat and didn't overpower it. The only thing he didn't love was that it came with turnips and not something a bit starchier like potato's. To finish off the night we made room for the griddled banana bread. GET THIS. I made a reservation in advance for a Tuesday night (not too busy then). The reservation site asked if I had a preference so I asked for a quiet corner table if possible. when we arrived, we were seated at a middle table that was closely flanked by 2 other tables even though there were other empty tables off to the sides. I asked to be seated at one of the empty tables and the hostess said no (rude!). During the whole time we were there, no one came in and sat at any of those tables! The waiter rolled his eyes when I asked for a beer that was not listed on the menu (rude). the food was ok (bar food). when we asked for a dessert menu and my wife ordered a coffee...mid-sentence, the waiter turned away and didn't come back for another 10-15 minutes but by that time our guests were so annoyed that we skipped dessert (and my wife never got the coffee she had ordered). We each found good cocktail options on the menu, but then opted for specials instead (which means we'll need to return). Seriously amazing. I'm from New York and was visiting Rhode Island for the week and this was by far the best food I had my entire trip. Everything tasted so fresh, especially the pull and peel shrimp. I didn't even like oysters before and now i'm dying to go back to get these specific oysters. Best Caesar salad I ever had. We took a drive to Westerly, RI and came to High Hope Tavern for dinner. First off, it's super cute and lovely inside. There's a fire place that makes it seem so cozy, and the bar is just beautiful! Started with some lovely cocktails- Peep this Jack (apple based and seasonal with ginger and bitters) and the Moxie (whiskey based with chipotle and bitters). Both were excellent and easy to drink. Next came the whipped ricotta with honey and pepitas and fresh bread to dip- incredible! I then had a burger- in all its simplicity it was absolutely mouthwatering! Fries were super crispy and golden. My husband tried the mussels- which was a huge bowl and the broth was full of flavor! TWICE now, on two occasions a year apart, my order was never entered (both table service abd then tonight by the bar) and then the staff tried to cover by blaming the kitchen. And to be asked "what can I do to make it right?" Well one, nothing the damage is done and two, comp stuff and don't put it on me. Great food and excellent service. We had the oysters (happy hour special), burger and linguine with clam sauce. The burger was really good but I thought the pasta was amazing. Drinks were really good too. Special thanks to the waitress, Riley for being so patient with us and our 13 month old. The ricotta appetizer was super salty, as was the roasted eggplant and roasted oysters. It was a Tuesday and we walked in as a group of four (myself, husband, and two older kids), the hostess told us there were absolutely no tables available, which was totally understandable at the time. But I asked her if there would be any walk-in availability for the rest of the night and she said no. After we left I was looking at their website to see if maybe a reservation opened up that we could grab and it said they have tables reserved for walk-ins. So I called anonymously to ask about it and she seemed super annoyed for some reason and said there would be a table ready in about 30 minutes. All to say I'm pretty sure she didn't want to seat us because we had kids, which is frustrating. I gave two stars because we have eaten there before with a group of adults and the food was good. But won't be back due to her rudeness on the phone and being discriminated against because we had kids this time. Hands down the best restaurant we visited during our Rhode Island vacation. They accommodated 13 of us, at 2 tables, and were quick with drinks and taking care of every minor request. The food was fantastic with everyone asking for a bite from someone else's plate. It is my understanding that the menu rotates, but the real stars were mussels, roasted eggplant risotto, steak tartare, and chicken milanese.
