I've been meaning to yelp "Surf" for some time now. We used to stop in for their really good happy hour often when my boyfriend lived downtown Westerly. FYI, If you get the nachos, cancel your dinner plans as they are served on a baking sheet and cover it completely! I also really love their happy hour tacos...especially the cauliflower ones believe it or not!) But our favorite reason for visiting Surf is Paul, the manager and bartender. No one knows tequila like he does. Each selection comes with a quick education (nothing over the top, just interesting), and he's excited to talk to you about the place, the area, and all the local restaurants, and such. He's a good guy so we make sure we stop in whenever we get a night out there or are passing through. read more

I had never been before but during the Chocolate stroll it was one of the stops on the list. The staff were super friendly and the place is pretty big! I only got a drink because we were not out for food that night. My drink was good. It seemed like a cool place to hang out. They had a pool table and a large bar. My partner and I had the up/down experience here the week of 4/1. The interior is very pleasant and geared for a young crowd. The service is always good no complaints. The Mexican food has always been the best In town. However things have changed a bit. A new menu was adopted in late February/ early March. The menu is geared towards ala carte which is fine. My partner ordered 2 Beef Birria Tacos ($7 per taco) and a side of rice and beans ($8). The taco's were reported as very tasty indeed. The beans and rice as good. I ordered the Burrito Grande Birria ($16). In review of the menu, the description of my choice seemed a little off. But I went with it. As I sliced into the burrito I understood my apprehension. The burrito standards had been lowered. The accompanying rice and beans are now inside the burrito, not on the side. That is unfortunately a bad decision. The burritos here were the best in the area, now perhaps "also ran". No reason to repurchase. A glass of wine ($10) plus tip AND an added credit card surcharge of 3% moved us out the door for $53.39. Came by for the first time and the late night bites began earlier than I expected based on what I saw online. The menu at this hour is super limited: a choice of 4 kinds of tacos, chips/salsa/guacamole, and ceviche. But I did enjoy the tacos I ordered (the shredded beef and the chicken/salsa verde). Seating at this hour is also limited to bar only, although you can track down your food, find a table elsewhere, and close out your tab later. On this particular night there was also live music. The vibes were nice, and I bet pre-late night it's even better. I'd like to try the full menu items someday if I'm ever back in the area to give it another go! read more

I have been wanting to try Surf Cantina out since it opened and finally got there tonight. I've heard mixed reviews but overall the feedback has been positive so I was excited to check it out. We walked in and the place is huge! There is a big bar in the center of the dinning room area. They have really taken their theme of being a surf bar pretty seriously and I applaud them for that as many places half ass the ambiance and theme. There is plenty of seating and big garage doors that they open up in nicer weather. There is another room off to the side with a pool table and some lounge space which is cool. The whole place was pretty clean and the bathroom was immaculate. Now for the food! The menu is a bit limited...I would have liked more options but they have the staples. I ordered a glass of red sangria, the chips and salsa as well as the guacamole and a chopped salad with steak. I thought the food was ok. The dressing on the chopped salad was tasty and the salad was a good size and it was fresh. The piece of steak wasn't the best quality of meat and there was a bit of fat on it. I also thought they could put a little more steak on there. My friend had a salad with a piece of salmon on it and the piece was so small. The salsa was spicy but good and the guacamole was refreshing after the spicy salsa. Overall I think it's a cool place, with friendly staff, decent service and a good vibe. A breath of fresh air in downtown Westerly. Located on the corner of Railroad and Canal. Next to the old Flipside. We were greeted warmly by the hostess. Definitely a more modern decor for our town. The seats along Canal st featured pull up style garage doors that open up in the warmer months. The bar seating had coat hooks and outlets with USB ports. The front entrance had a man trap (to keep the winter chill out). We were seated by the door and really appreciated that! Also I noticed that whenever people were leaving, someone would usually help and hold the doors for them. Nice. Music was bit on the loud side but not a issue with my group. I thought maybe there weren't enough TVs for the bar. Just 2 in the corners. I really liked the ceiling/lighting over the bar. Very creative. Service was pretty good. Had Christina as our waitress. Surf Nachos ($12 Tortilla Chips, Grilled Corn, Crema, Pico de Gallo, Chile con Queso, Chihuahua Cheese, Black Beans, pickled red onions, Avocado /Carnitas +$5 These were honestly the BEST nachos I've ever had. Every thing was evenly topped and the house fried nachos were great. There were 3 adults and 1 preteen and we barely finished them. 5/5 Hubby ordered the Sun & Sea Pasta ( $23 Grilled Shrimp, Chipotle Bacon, Grilled Corn, Garlic, Cream, Spinach, Queso Fresco). Rating 5/5. The slice of bacon was really delicious. More like a chipotle pork belly slice with a sugar crust. The shrimp was very tasty thanks to it being grilled. He had a VINTAGE BULLET CUTTER (Vida Mezcal, Campari, Sweet Vermouth, Chocolate Bitters) --a very stiff drink! I had my usual TALL, DARK & STORMY (Goslings, Cynar, Ginger Beer, Lime). For my entrée I had the Seacoast Blue Oyster Mushrooms ( $17 Roasted Blue Oyster Mushrooms, Garlic, Cream, Toasted Cashews, Guacamole, Warm Corn Tortillas). Rating 3/5. The guac was perfect. The (3) tortillas are wrapped in foil. I don't know how they do it but it was piping hot when I unwrapped them. I'm a slow eater and when I went for the second tortilla- it was still warm. As for the mushrooms- it was delicious --don't got me wrong. But I think I can honestly say that this may be the saltiest food I ever ate -- that wasn't intentionally supposed to be salty -like pretzels or pickles or something like that. I generally don't salt my food so maybe it may be ok for many others. Youngest son had the kids cheese burger slider. Came with a choice of fries or rice and beans. He chose fries. They're kind of like crinkle cut wedges. The burger patty looked to be a higher quality ground beef then what would usually be offered on a kids menu. $7 Adult son had the Chicken Tinga Tacos ( $14 Lime Cream, Pickled Red Onions). Came with a side of rice and black beans. Rating 4.5/5. The beans definite over whelmed the rice. It seemed like it was 80% to 20%. I give this place a 100/100 for food delivery. Each dish came all at once. For dessert we all shared a coffee milk tres leches cake. Not overly sweet. Topped with whipped cream and spices. Christina even took my plate to bag the left overs. Bartender was super friendly and they had a live band playing music. Plenty of bar and table seating available for a Friday evening around 9. Dinner with work friends was fun last night! We came to Surf Cantina, a Mexican restaurant in Westerly, RI. I will straight out say I was never a fan of Mexican food. My friends are, and frequently come here. There were nachos, which looked like they were very good. They devoured the platter! We also had plain chips and salsa, which I thought were very good. House made chips, and the salsa had just enough kick and heat. I had fish tacos, which I was pleasantly surprised at. They were on a flour tortilla, only 2, and at first I thought I'd be hungry. Turns out they were just enough. It came with rice and black beans on side. I'm not a fan of beans, but the rice was tasty. Also on the table was a taco salad, a gigantic burrito, a Cuban sandwich and other taco dishes. Of course, there were drinks! THOSE were delicious!! It was very busy here for a Tuesday night, even though it was early, but we found out it was Trivia night. We parked on the street; I believe there was public parking across the street. We love "Surf Bar", as we were calling it until we realized it was actually called "Surf Cantina". But no matter the name, this is a great little hidden gem in historic Downtown Westerly, RI. The restaurant is warm and welcoming, with ample seating at a circular bar in the center of the main dining area. They also have a neat back room where groups can chill over a game of pool and margaritas, or take photos at their surfboard selfie station - so much fun! The menu is always reliable, a cavalcade of satisfying Mexican comfort food. From the chips, which arrive piping hot, perfectly salted, and dipped in tangy salsa roja, to the ceviche, which features local seafood marinated in lime, onion, and cilantro, there's a lot of great shareable plates to start off your meal. From there, transition to the Westerly Soupy Tacos (featuring a local favorite, sopressata sausage) or the Salmon Burrito Bowl, served atop mashed sweet potatoes and black beans. I've had a few really great meals here; my only qualm is that sometimes the entrees have come out just a little closer to room temperature than I would like, and those hot and fresh chips are a tough act to follow! Drinks are a standout - the classic marg is pretty epic, and they have seasonally inspired offerings that change frequently. Last we went, they were running a holiday-inspired menu with hot drinks and peppermint infusions. Service is snappy and fun, adding to the atmosphere of this convivial local joint. The inside of this location is so fun, it's like you landed on the beach in CA with the decor. Parking was a little bit difficult because it is street parking in downtown Westerly. I sat at the bar and enjoyed some tacos with my friend. Bartender was nice and prompt. We ordered the westerly soupy and the pork belly tacos. I was so excited for the soupy tacos as soupy is my jam. I was a little disappointed as the taste that I was expecting was not there. The pork belly tacos were thinly cut and not much taste either. They were served with beans and rice. Ordered my quesadilla online. Paid the eight dollar up charge for steak bringing the total to $20 plus tax.A little more expensive than other places I've been to but that's OK. When I get there, there is nobody to be found. I finally go looking for somebody and then she disappears in the back to see if my order is ready . A gentleman comes in and sits at the bar and we are both waiting and waiting and waiting. She finally comes out with this big bag in her hand and a tiny little container in her other hand. What a wonderful surprise. Was totally expecting a big Sombrero / dull Burrito / bright green Margarita type of a place. That was before I set my teeth into the the crispiest bit of crunch. The Baja Fish Tacos hide a perfectly crisply fried section of loin of cod. Absolutely huge white flakes of tender and moist cod, dressed with just the right amount of an avocado and green chili crema. Could I have done without the red and green oak leaf salad in the taco? Well yes. Was the white rice both too white and less cooked than would be considered ideal? Well yes. Was my cocktail sweetened with twice the sugar of a warm Mexican soda? Yet again, it was indeed. Do I care? No, that was a great taco. My wife's dish of Steak tacos were plenty tasty as well. And when I asked for some Rum to even out my super sweet cocktail I got a generous dram of Bacardi Reserva Ocho. Certainly sweetened my mood. Nice work B+. read more

Took our first and last trip to Westerly to visit Surf Cantina and left very disappointed solely because of the food- the staff was fine. (We didn't have it in us to even mention this to the waitress because we never complain as we're always afraid of kitchen retaliation, you just never know if you're going to catch a cook on a bad day). We just didn't finish anything and were pleasant to our server to save face. Gringo tacos burnt and overly salty, street corn burnt (and not the good way) and dry, Maduros burnt and overdone... like maybe it was a one off in the kitchen, but judging by the other reviews here on Yelp- not likely. The margaritas were good, but food was 100% off and left such a burnt taste in our moths we cant ever go back. This place gives me Gentrified-Mexican vibes and there are so many other authentic Mexican joints to patronize. A positive note: the decor where the pool tables, bathrooms and bar was nice- I really have nothing else to comment on because the food was so yucky and that makes me so sad. Last décor side note for management: the first booth by the door is VERY dirty, stained and could use a good shampooing. read more

This restaurant recently opened in my town. So of course everyone is trying to get in there. They were not excepting reservations. I walked in and sat at the bar. I noticed many empty tables available and when I asked if I could have one of those tables I was surprised to hear I could. The restaurant was very good but extremely smoky. Service was great. Food was great. Upbeat and lively. Manager came up to the table to make sure everything was OK. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and would head back soon. read more

I had been receiving emails about brunch at Surf for the last couple of weeks and they were tempting. So today was the day! I was a bit concerned when we arrived at 1130. Only two patrons sitting at the bar and they weren't eating. Putting aside our trepidation, we ordered. The huevos rancheros for MK and the chorizo and egg taco for me. WOW! MKs huevos were served tostada style with the egg, beans and fixings heaped on a crispy corn tortilla. MK doesn't praise often but to her this was one of the best breakfasts she had had in a while. The egg and chorizo taco was just as good and came with a great side of fried potatoes. Washed down with a great Bloody Mary, this brunch guaranteed that we'd be back again. Such a cool ambiance, love the open windows, the couches in the back to drink and lounge with friends. The bar is awesome, it's huge, wraps around. Love the surf videos on the tv screens. Great feel. The service fell completely short and i'm sure our waitress was aware. Perhaps she was overwhelmed on a Saturday but we weren't feeling her vibes. Was super excited to try the food after hearing all the buzz on the chef in magazines and local podcasts. After a long day on the water I was ready to order the whole menu. However, after our drinks and few appetizers we quickly realized we didn't want to spend any more money sadly. Everything was suppppper salty. Most likely bc a lot of the dishes had chorizo, but the flavor profiles fell short. My tongue was salt burned. The octopus app had a nice purée to off set all that salt. The fundido app was super salty as well prob bc the chorizo, but then dip a salty chip into it and it's just salt on salt on cheesy salt. Too much. Wasn't a fan of this place. The inside is very cool and I loved the open windows all along the exterior. Came here around 1:30/2pm on a Sunday afternoon and the music was BLARING. Like 11pm at the club loud. They have speakers lining the entire inside of the place so there was no escape. It would not have been that bad if it was like reggae or mellow kind of surf/beach music. But it was terrible. The crowd was just a few tables of older folks and an older group at the bar. Sat at the bar and could hardly hear each other. Bartender was super nice but made us two horrible drinks. The margarita was one of the worst I've ever had and the mojito was so sweet it tasted like sprite. I was starving but the menu only had brunch type items and was very limited. Breakfast burrito with home fries, etc. I drank my horrible margarita and we left as quickly as possible. Bartender was super nice and offered to make another drink when she noticed the mojito only had like one sip out of it. But we wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. Let me first start by saying, our service was excellent. Between our waitress and the manager greeting the tables I did feel like I was well taken care of. Unfortunately, the food left much to be desired. I ordered the bikini line 'margarita' to start. I say 'margarita' because it is certainly NOT a margarita despite being listed under margaritas. It was served in a martini glass with no ice or salt. It was fine albeit a little sweet. I was disappointed because the expectation was that I was ordering a margarita. We started out with the calamari and guacamole for apps. The calamari was good although, I don't think it fits the menu or the 'mexican' theme. It was something I would expect to get at a bar. The guacamole was missing the citrus flavor and was all together flavorless. It also was very chunky. I got the birria tacos and partner got the pork belly tacos. The pork belly was chewy instead of crispy which is the best part of pork belly. The birria were fine but seemed mushy and didn't have anything particularly special about them. Also everything was missing SALT. Nothing had salt. They offer tres leches for desert which we would have been interested in had the rest of meal not been as disappointing. I think there is potential but the food definitely needs an improvement. I hope this new spot will give me an opportunity to give them a second chance with a better experience. read more
