I had a very disappointing experience with Mod Squad Dental regarding charges that were never…read moredisclosed in advance. As a new patient, I relied on the office to verify my insurance benefits and provide an estimate of my financial responsibility before treatment. I went for a routine regular teeth cleaning, which is 100% covered under preventive care (in and out of network). Afterward, I received an unexpected bill for a service I did not request or approve. The office manager, Beth, repeatedly insisted that the charge was a "copay." Preventive care has no copay, and even if it did, it would be a clearly defined amount like $50 or $100 --not a made-up charge or random dollar figure. When I asked for documentation that they had confirmed coverage with my insurance PRIOR to my visit, Beth said they were too busy and cited HIPAA as the reason they could not provide a recording. I did not request a recording; I simply asked for proof that the call had been made in advance, which they were unable to provide. All I received was a screenshot of call that was made to my insurance company on Feb 17, 2026, which is 3 months AFTER my visit and it was their attempt to get my insurance cover the unapproved charge that's not related to my regular cleaning. My insurance also confirmed they had no record of any call from the office prior to my visit. The office's explanations were inconsistent, initially claiming they had contacted my insurance, then later stating they don't have time to call every patient's insurance to confirm coverage. They also claimed they don't have access to the fee schedule because they are out of network, but my insurance confirmed that this information is available on their website and would have been provided if the office had actually called. The conversation grew increasingly agitated, with Beth repeatedly insisting she was too busy, and ultimately ended with her hanging up on me without any effort to find a constructive solution. I'm not sure why I should be penalized for their staffing or time constraints. As a patient, I have no way of knowing procedure codes or coverage details. That's the dentist office's responsibility to avoid issues like this one. In my 20+ years of seeing dentists or doctors across the U.S., I have never received an unauthorized or undisclosed healthcare bill. Transparency and informed consent are basic expectations in any business, and unfortunately, Mod Squad Dental failed to meet that simple standard. Based on this experience, I cannot trust this office and would not recommend them. It's clear from prior reviews that I am not the only patient facing this issue.

The previous dental clinic kept recommending treatments to me for my teeth as my gums were constantly inflammed due to poor teeth hygiene and I felt like I was paying a lot out of pocket. Every visit to the other dental clinic was like having to pay $5k in monthly payments all the time. SRD was my 2nd opinion and after they evaluated me, I had no need to do the treatment the other dental clinic was telling me to do. After I switched over, my teeth hygiene got better. I'm one of many whom have plaque buildup quicker than other no matter how much maintenance I try to do. I admit I didn't have the best track record for keeping my teeth up to date growing up. After going to SRD, I started to floss more prior to brushing my teeth. The front staff, dental hygenists and dentists have been pleasant during all my visits. In background they have music playing. During the cleanings, they have the option to have netflix on for you to watch, and shades to make sure you're not blinded. If you have retainers with them, you can also give it to them to do a rinse while you're doing your cleaning. They offer a toothbrush packet every time you're on your way out. I haven't had any complaints with my time with SRD, so I'm quite content. I've grown comfortable going to them for my cleanings and am also using them for TruSmile in aligning my teeth. They're not too far from the freeway making it easy to go for the appointments.

On February 3, 2026, I had a tooth extraction performed by Dr. Kelly J. Hwang, DDS at Sabre…read moreSprings. The tooth was described to me as large, cracked, and presented as an emergency requiring immediate extraction. I trusted this recommendation and proceeded with treatment. In hindsight, I felt pressured to move forward urgently and later questioned whether immediate extraction was necessary. Following the extraction, I experienced significant and persistent pain that felt more severe than expected. I was instructed to take ibuprofen for pain control. After taking it as directed, I developed severe burning stomach pain and gastrointestinal distress, including symptoms consistent with gastritis and diarrhea. The pain interfered with my ability to eat, sleep, and recover. When I contacted the office and explained the medication was causing serious stomach distress, I was told to continue taking ibuprofen and was told that these types of reactions do not occur. This response was concerning because gastrointestinal irritation, including stomach pain and diarrhea, are recognized potential side effects of ibuprofen. I felt dismissed and unsafe because my physical symptoms were not acknowledged, and I was not provided alternative pain management guidance. Because my pain continued and felt abnormal, I returned to the office for follow-up care. I was physically exhausted, emotionally distressed, and frightened something was wrong with my healing. During the visit, I was informed that food was present in the extraction socket. The provider rinsed the socket and mentioned antibiotics might be prescribed. I attempted to explain the severity of my pain and asked questions about possible complications. When I referenced information I had researched to understand my symptoms, I was told my information was incorrect. I explained that I did not have a primary dentist for follow-up care and was seeking help because I did not know where else to go. I was told that this was not the office's problem, which made me feel abandoned while experiencing post-surgical pain. The interaction escalated when multiple staff members became involved simultaneously. Their tone and presence felt overwhelming and intimidating while I was already in pain and emotionally distressed. I felt outnumbered, unheard, and increasingly anxious. I was then asked to leave the office. Being asked to leave while still in severe pain and without guidance was frightening and upsetting. I left feeling physically unwell, emotionally shaken, and unsure how to safely care for a surgical wound without professional support. I left the appointment without receiving: * Clear post-operative instructions * A confirmed treatment plan * Prescribed medication that had been mentioned * Guidance for managing ongoing pain * Follow-up care or referral instructions * Alternative pain management after reporting medication side effects I am concerned that dismissing a patient reporting post-surgical complications, medication intolerance, and unresolved pain without providing discharge instructions or continuity of care places patients at risk. I respectfully request a review of whether appropriate standards of care, patient communication, medication counseling, and follow-up obligations were met.
