I don't know if I just went on an off day but this place is the cutest little hidden gem! You would never know what was inside/ out in their back garden based on their front door entrance. Note it's cash only but they do have an ATM inside. We got a salad(so fresh and colorful!), linguini and clams, and the short rib. Everything was delicious. It was so nice to sit in their back area. Aye look, I'm giving this joint a 5 for multiple reasons! The ambience is unlike anything I've ever seen in the city! The baby back ribs and eggs absolutely slaps?!! I DIDNT KNOW YOU COULD DO THAT, but it goes!! It wasn't too busy, which was such a nice change of pace for a brunch spot, and all in all I felt at peace. Milk and Roses has been in my bucket list for years and we finally got a chance to try. There is limited indoor seats but plenty of outdoor seats with cozy ambiance and old fashioned decor. If the weather allows, it would be wonderful to have brunch there outside. Our favorite dishes were PB&J which is French toast with peanut butter & blueberry jelly and Shashuka. The French toast was made with baguette, we guessed, soft inside with chewy layer and the jelly was cooked fresh. My husband is a super fan for Shashuka and theirs was decent with great portion but it was kind of disappointed since it was not served in a skillet. I've been to this restaurant a few times over the years and each time was a bit underwhelmed / disappointed, but wanted to give it another chance since I live in the neighborhood. This Valentines Day was the last straw, I'm never going to come here again. I've literally never written a yelp review before but I can't believe how unpleasant this meal was. First of all, in order to hold a reservation for 2/14 they made us send a Venmo of the full cost of the meal to a random number, which is super weird no? I've never seen another restaurant do this, even on Valentine's Day. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The rates were different depending on the space in the restaurant where you wanted to be seated (also weird!).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We picked the fireplace room which was one of the more expensive tickets ($230!) but we assumed that the vibe in a space called the "fireplace room" would be cozy and romantic.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We arrived and honestly immediately started laughing at how weird the ambiance was in that room. First of all, the lights were BRIGHT, like cafeteria bright. There were over a dozen lamps turned on in this room, and a bright chandelier.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We noticed some of the other couples around us taking it upon themselves to turn off the lamps closest to them. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There was technically a fireplace but everybody was seated so far away from it that it was actually cold in the room.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Most of the tables were long tables with wooden benches, like you'd use for a big event, and we were seated at a table that already had people on the other end.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We asked if we could switch to one of the smaller tables by the window and were told that those tables were a different price, even though they were in the same room. Weird![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But honestly by the end of the meal we weren't even talking about how bad the vibes were because the quality of the food and the service were also so bad. We weren't offered water or drink menus until we asked, and for our 8:30 reservation we didn't get water until 9PM and didn't get our drinks until 9:30PM, which was after the soup had arrived. We noticed that everyone else around us in the room were having a similar experience of waiting for their drinks and water for ages, or having to ask multiple times for these things. Honestly if we hadn't already paid for such an expensive meal in advance we probably would have left at this point, but we felt like we had to see it through to try and get our moneys worth. The first two courses took a really long time to arrive, and they messed up our salad order (which feels like it shouldn't be possible for a pre fixe meal where they made us check off our choices with a pen on the paper menu), and again we noticed that other couples around us also got their orders messed up. After the first two courses the rest of the food came out at a decent pace, but the quality was underwhelming. The soup wasn't hot, the canapés felt like they had been sitting out, and generally most of the food was just sort of flavorless and unexciting. Throughout our meal the service could be best described as bad and weird. The servers were very kind but just didn't seem very well trained and seemed overwhelmed and frantic, like they were maybe understaffed and/or hadn't been prepared for how to handle this night. They were constantly running in and out of the room (like sprinting), disappearing for a long time and then lingering close to the table very suddenly, snatching up our plates the moment one of us was done even if the other one of us was still eating, taking our plates but not replacing our silverware so we had dirty cutlery sitting on the tablecloth, bringing one item at a time even when we had ordered two of the same thing, etc. Just sort of unsettling especially when you're charging so much money and it's supposed to be a special valentines meal. In the end we ended up paying over $400 for this meal (the $230 ticket plus two drinks each, fees and 20% tip which was automatically added) which is by far the most expensive meal for two people we've ever had in Greenpoint, with some of the weirdest vibes and worst food and experience. Again, the staff was very very nice and I don't blame them at all, this seemed like an issue of really poor management. I've never complained to a manager before in my life but I was very close to doing so after this meal because it felt like such a rip off. read more

Milk and Roses Bistro was the most dreamy location to host our baby shower! Their conservatory was the perfect location and ambiance for our spring "baby in bloom" themed baby shower! Sussane, their event coordinator, was extremely communicative and helped us through planning and executing the event flawlessly! Their food and desserts were very yummy. The portion sizes were large! Their PBJ was out of the world! The service throughout the event was seamless, and the staff was so friendly! They were even able to accommodate some last-minute food restrictions without much fuss. Among the worst brunch meals I've had in Brooklyn so far. My girlfriend made a reservation here for her birthday, and it disappointed in most fronts. First, the good part - the ambience and decorations are nice. You really feel like you're in a Victorian library, and the venue is spacious. It's very unique in that regard and visually enjoyable. The outdoor space is nice. Then, the bad part: the food was very mediocre. My party ordered pretty much everything on the menu, and every dish was generally subpar, lacking good flavor, consistency, and any attention to detail. Sometimes I can give a place a pass if they're trying unique things that don't work, but the fundamentals were badly missed. The burger and the BLT came with gigantic buns, way too large for the sandwiches. The accompanying "salad" was just a bunch of arugula with a flavorless dressing. The patty was dry and overcooked. The pancakes were way too dense and dry. The shakshuka was watery. Wish the food matched how nice the place looks. Revisiting the basic techniques for these dishes would go a long way to making this place work. I don't plan on returning. read more

This restaurant is incredibly beautiful, and I would love to come again for the ambiance. The interior is incredibly cool, perfect for a dreary day. You feel like you're in a victorian library and its very cozy. The garden is beautiful and large, which is ideal for a nice summer evening. The drinks looked good, but we didn't get any. The food was good, but nothing insane. They have spaghetti for all the pastas and put them in different sauces. The spaghetti seems hand made, but I think they leave it a bit too al dente (and I enjoy a chewy pasta). The sauces are good, but I've also had more satisfying pasta dishes elsewhere. I live in the area, so its a spot I will visit again. But if you have to travel an hour to get here, it might be a one and done. All the bad reviews for the service are interesting, I think it was slow but only one waitress, one runner, and one hostess were working and there was also a wedding reception in their event space. The perfect date night The absolute coziest, romantic, warm setting with food to match that same vibe. Whether it's a casual dinner, anniversary, or first date- I'd recommend it to anyone. We ordered the Caprese di Stracciatella as a starter (so lovely and light), and entrees were the Genovese and Fava, Cicoria,Pecorino,&Crusco. I'm pescatarian/vegetarian and my date is not, and I felt like there was plenty decent options for me since I wasn't in a seafood mood. The pasta taste so homemade and fresh. Truly the most adorable little Italian place I have ever been to!! They have such a gorgeous interior and an absolutely beautiful garden- it is impossible to decide which is more charming. The women who ran it are soooo friendly and sweet and I really hope all the best to them because they are so lovely. The food is very good! It seems like really authentic, well done Italian food, and they have interesting things that I hadn't tried before as well as really well executed classics. My girlfriend and I went on a date together and we are so glad we did. This place is truly the most romantic and beautiful place to get dinner together. MAJOR SCREW UP-Menu said "albicocce" aka apricot, cooked apricots. Instead he was served raw peaches, Husband is HIGHLY allergic to peaches. Came in this evening, were seated in the back. Ordered drinks, my father and my prosecco were warm. We called our waiter and commented that it wasnt cold, he said "oh but the bottle came out of the fridge, the glass must have been warm as it came out of the washer." Silence... guess we'll take some ice?!? WTF!!! Get us a new cold glass of Prosecco instead I drank Watered down Prosecco. My husband ordered burata with slow roasted albicocce. What he got was a ball of mozarella over some raw peaches with a piece of arugula for decoration. He is allergic to peaches. We didn't finish our starters because we lost our appetite watching my husband cough and scratch his throat. We asked if we could forego the entrees and get our bill so he could go take some Benadryl. The server said they started cooking our meals we asked if they could be taken off the bill as our experience at this point was horrific. He said ok and then came back and said that they are already packed up and it was too late. Whatever we just needed to get the F out of there, my husband was turning red. Annoyingly we paid the full bill and took the rest of the food to go. We didn't tip the server, which I hated, but what option did he give us? If he didn't know how to handle the situation he should have called the owner or manager who was apparently no where to be found. How do you leave your business unattended esp during COVID times when restaurants and business complain of being short staffed anyway?!? In my business, we've been going above and beyond during COVID working long hours for free sometimes. That's how you keep your business a float during a pandemic. We were extremely disappointed in the service, food and the way the server handled the situation. I've known people who have sued restaurants who serve the customers food that gave them an allergic reaction. We didn't ask for a free bill and we didn't make a huge thing about the allergic reaction, we just wanted to cancel our Entrees so we could go home and deal with my husbands allergy. Instead we were told to wait for our Entrees, given to go bags and given a bill with the "apricot (aka peach) salad" removed but everything else included. And they just expected I would "let it go" because of COVID!? By the way, we got home and I took a bite of the linguini genovese and it tasted like pasta with meat from a can. You know the spam like fatty pieces which they again colored with a piece of greenery such as arugula or parsley. This place definitely seems like it is surviving by any means necessary, however at the mercy of their customers. I am sad as I would love for it to succeed and thrive. The server, DM on yelp to apologize. I appreciated his apology and he apologized the night. I don't blame him because as he explained, he's new. But no one in the restaurant knew what to do?! The decor here is the picture-perfect definition of rustic! A strong second date contender for a brunch spot when the weather is nice for the hopeless romantic trying to secure a third date. Took a chance, considering the average 3.5 star review (which, honestly, is not a bad rating, but 4 or above on Yelp for "excellent" am I right?). Nonetheless, the food, at least the dishes we got, were tastefully done. The Bucatini Alla Genovese was an interesting pairing of braised short rib - almost like a Korean galbi jjim - and pasta that actually blended together nicely. Yes, I would say that most would leave here with the impression that it is overpriced (even based on portion size alone) by about $5 to $7 a dish (particularly due to the COVID-fee), but you are paying for a fairytale-like scenery at a time where the world is short of pleasant. Their backdoor outside space is a quaintly secluded garden adorned with the background of live chirping birds. It does seem understaffed in that there was only one server/ waiter, but to be fair his service was great and no complaints there. Lastly, the cash-only policy is an inconvenience for sure, especially at a time like this when everyone is wary about germs, but hopefully they start accepting credit card and/or contactless payments soon! read more

Sigh. Remembering my night here almost makes me want to cry. It was my last dinner out before the city--and the world--as we know it ended. But unlike REM, I don't feel fine. Not by a long shot. But hey, if I had to pick a place for a final pre-COVID hurrah, I'm glad it was Milk and Roses, home to one of the most beautiful patios in all of NYC. We feasted on delectable American-Italian fare like Pasta al Tonno under trees and flowers and twinkly strung lights. Service was fantastic--When it got too cold for us to remain outside (remember March, guys? That was 15 years ago), they found a table for us even though the inside was packed to the brim. Despite a decent food menu, decided to settle on a drink. Went for the Coal Tonic ($14) - a gin and tonic with a thyme smoke twist. The addition of the smokey flavor came through first and foremost, with the gin settling towards the end. Service didn't come around all that often, but was able to get the check quickly. I came here late night on a spring Saturday. Last call was around 11:30pm. Looking at Yelp photos now, I see that M&R can take on many different moods depending on the time of day and the season. I had no idea there were so many other parts to this restaurant and bar! This particular evening was cozy, and I loved the rustic feel. The windows were cracked, and the lights were dim. We felt like we were in someone's library bar. I love the booth seating. We faced out toward the street. My husband got a whiskey tasting. The bartender was nice enough to give my husband a sniff of a "bartenders choice" he had selected based on my husband's other two choices. I got a cocktail called the Happy Nelson (I think!), and it was unlike any cocktail I've ever had before - so floral and smooth and potent. I really loved it. If I lived closer, I'd love to call this my neighborhood bar. read more

Came here for brunch on Saturday with some friends and dog hoping to eat in the back outside garden area but was disappointed when they said dogs were allowed in the garden area (even though it's outside). I thought it was really strange and they kept saying because it was still a dining area but they were nice enough to seat us at a table right next to the front door so we could tie my dog outside next to us. I ordered the farmers market breakfast plate that came with bread, scrambled eggs, bacon, and potatoes. It was good but not very much food and felt it was pricey for what it was. This quaint little restaurant in Greenpoint is beautiful and cozy, however seating is limited inside, so would get there early or call ahead. Although it was cold, I did take a peak outside and saw they had a great backyard with multiple seating options and will definitely be back in the spring/summer. It's also good to note this restaurant is cash only but they do have an ATM inside with a $3 fee. The service was quick and their wine list even has some recommendations on the menus, which did not disappoint. I ended up having the Pasta alla Genovese which was AMAZING, so flavorful, just the right amount of short rib and filling. I've gone to this restaurant on and off since they opened in their old location, about a decade ago, always to work on my computer and write. I will not be going again. They have an absolutely enormous space and act like they do not, and are very strict in a silly way. Today i went in to have a coffee and do some writing. It's Tuesday 4 pm. I was told if I wanted coffee there would be no table service because it's dinner time. Odd, but fine, I can carry my own coffee. I was one of four tables. One woman was on a zoom on her phone, and two couples were finishing lunch. I sat in the corner and began working on something and the waiter came over and told me that there are no laptops during dinner service and I would need to put it away. "No one is here, and I just bought a coffee," and he tells me that he doesn't make the rules and shrugs. He clarifies-- Laptops ARE allowed during lunch, but that had ended. He suggests that I needed to ask permission to use a laptop. It's TUESDAY AT 4 PM in GREENPOINT. This is a place that is taking itself way too seriously for what it is, and I can't understand how they are paying their rent given how empty it often is (I walk by all the time.) read more

After this and then more pointing out from us some obvious menu differences between what she had ordered and what she got, he replaced it with what she was supposed to have gotten in the first place after the rest of us had eaten. No apologies or taking anything off the bill. (pair this with asked for a condiment, he never came back with it/ and the $26 lamb dish was practically all fat and bone).
