I stopped in while spending some time in the East Village, and this was easily one of the best Italian meals I've had in New York City. I ordered the Lamb Ragù pasta, and every bite was packed with rich, slow-cooked flavor. To start, my brother and I shared a pizza and the lobster appetizer, and both were incredible. My brother ordered the truffle pasta, and after stealing a few bites, I can honestly say it was just as unforgettable. The atmosphere was on another level. Even on a Tuesday night, the restaurant was buzzing with energy, full of happy people, great conversations, and an authentic Italian vibe that made you want to stay for hours. I came here with my friend on a Wednesday evening - we had made a reservation in advance. My friend was waiting for me at the bar area but when I arrived we were promptly seated at our table. The table was a bit small and quite close to the other tables but it can't really be helped in NY. The service also felt a little rushed, which was understandable during the holiday season. Great little Italian spot!! My friends and I passed by, looking for a cute outdoor dining spot. We didn't have a reservation, but luckily were able to snag some outdoor seating on the sidewalk. A fairly popular Italian place that is known for their spaghetti alla carbonara, this is their original location - Greenwich Village. Reservations are recommended as there are a lot of open bar seats for walk-ins, and they were not too hard to get if you book at least a few days out. We got 2 pastas which was a decent amount of food - spaghetti alla carbonara and ravioli di short ribs al ragu. The carbonara was so good especially when we mixed the egg yolk. We practically used our forks to consume as much of the sauce off the plate as we could when we were done with the dish. The spaghetti was cooked perfectly al dente and finally a place that uses guanciale for carbonara instead of ham or bacon. The ravioli was good with a decent amount of short ribs inside and ground beef outside. I liked the carbonara more. Both pastas totaled $60 before tax and tip which is a little pricy due to the smaller portions, but the sauce is fairly heavy so you will be satisfied. We might have had room for dessert but we wanted to branch out to try more restaurants during my weekend visit in NYC. Service was decent as they gave a large water bottle for us to pour (tap water, free) but didn't really get more until the very end when we pay the bill. They were rather busy and we were eating our early lunch at 3:30 PM on a Sunday afternoon, but maybe he was overwhelmed with all his tables? By the time we left the restaurant at 5:15 PM we had to ask the table busier for the check because we couldn't find her. We had enough room for the five of us at the table and we weren't crowded with our numerous amount of dishes! Food was decent but experience was seriously lacking and ultimately, we did not feel it was worth what we paid. Everything seemed cheap and fast--and not in a good way. First of all, we were seated at a 2-top that was literally squeezed in perpendicular to a 4-top so the backs of those chairs were hitting our table. Needless to say, it was very cramped. Service was odd -- server looked to be helping many tables so perhaps not his fault, but generally unattentive. Dishes were plopped down without explanation or care. No one was hospitable or welcoming. Bread that came out was stale and had three olives and a mix of peasant bread and old (very old) focaccia--it was crunchy! Drinks were very good, I'll say that -- had their house Negroni and Manhattan. Ordered the meat/cheese board and the portions were incredibly tiny -- the "focaccina" was three quarters of a round flatbread (not even all four--they couldn't have given us 2 pieces each for sharing?!?!?) and the cheese was about an inch square. Each meat came with four slices. Even the cocktail onions and pickled cucumbers were the tiniest we'd ever seen -- we had to laugh. No olive oil brought out as noted on menu. We each got a pasta meal -- my partner's seafood/squid ink was tasty but presentation was bad -- it looked like it was just slopped into the bowl. My fusilli with wild boar/pork was in a light tomato sauce with what looked and tasted like ground turkey. No hearty taste--hard to believe it was boar and pork. The parmigiana looked like something sprinkled on at the supermarket not freshly shaved. Shockingly poor. It tasted OK, but very bland--not at all matching the lofty menu description. Looking around, mostly out of towners were there, looked like a bit of a tourist trap--folks taking pictures of the decor and food, etc. My theory is that they're catering to tourist standards, not NY standards, which would make the high ratings make sense. Most NYC places at these prices provide a far superior experience all around. We also were rushed through the meal -- we were there exactly one hour. Good for lunch time, but not for what should have been a relaxing dinner. Had a lunch counter vibe -- get em in, get em out. We left feeling like the place lacked personality and the cost-cutting was painfully obvious, and whatever costs were being saved were certainly not being passed on to the customer -- it all felt very, very chintzy and the dining experience was generally unpleasant. My daughter recently moved to Manhattan, which is giving us the perfect excuse to discover some great new places to eat. We recently stumbled upon Olio e Più in Greenwich Village and had a fantastic lunch with my wife and daughter. The outdoor seating was absolutely perfect on a beautiful sunny day and really added to the whole experience. We shared two pizzas -- the Rustica and the Capri -- along with a Caesar salad, and everything was outstanding. The pizzas were fresh, flavorful, and authentic, and the salad was excellent as well. Christmas Day Dinner at Olio e Più This year, I decided to do something a little different and go out to dinner on Christmas Day. We ended up at Olio e Più and were very happy with the decision. For starters, we ordered the Olio Caesar, Hamachi crudo, and the bruschetta. The Hamachi crudo was good I'd give it about a 7/10. The Olio Caesar and bruschetta definitely stood out. The combination of bruschetta with burrata and ricotta was rich, fattening, but very good. For our entrées, we ordered three pasta dishes: their popular Spaghetti alla Carbonara (a must try), the Fettuccine Tartufo (a special not on the regular menu), and a seafood pasta. Everything was great, but the fettuccine with black truffles was my favorite. My husband and I dined at Olio for and early Sunday dinner. If you plan to come here during popular hours, definitely make a reservation as you may not be able to walk in and get a table. They have indoor and outdoor tables and I really appreciate the simple decor inside and has great lighting. Our server, Turgut, was incredibly friendly and attentive. I always always appreciate when people remember our names and/or ask our names and he did. He also let us know about the location in DC and a little bit of history about the restaurant which I loved. We ordered the lamb ragu pasta and the chicken piccata - highly recommend these items if you want a light meal to share! Turgut was so kind and thoughtful and gave us a complimentary dessert and we chose the olive oil cake. Such a cute and quaint spot in my favorite part of the city-next door to a floral shop, at the intersection of people watching, and steps away from the Jefferson Market Garden. Would highly recommend making reservations ahead of time because even though there were empty seats when we stopped by, majority if not all are for people who have booked ahead-no surprise as an aesthetically pleasing establishment like this would be booked 7 days a week out. I imagine during the summer, outdoor dining is more enjoyable, but would recommend Fall and onwards into the Winter to try to book the "Standard" aka indoor seating because the heat lamps can only do so much justice before the cold wind really takes over and the dining experience feels uncomfortable. We ordered the Bruschetta Tricolore, sadly I was not impressed, possible because i was expecting the typical toasted bread, seasoned tomato mixture with basil. This was rustica bread (not toasted), a spread of ricotta cheese on the bread and topped with tomatoes that were cut in all sizes and half cherry tomatoes. Spinach salad is good, tiramisu is also the best I have had... you truly cannot go wrong with anything on this menu.
