We visited MilkBoy on June 29, 2023. We walked in and it was busy for an early morning. One server working behind the bar and serving tables. He did a great job at balancing both. The place was a bit narrow and kinda cramped but overall ambience was a okay considering it is a bar. My son and I both ordered the bacon egg and cheesetoast. It was a sizeable sandwich if you will. The flavor, and presentation exceeded our expectations. My husband ordered the Quesadilla em said it was delicious as well. All in all, the food was delicious! Got together with a few friends from college who I hadn't seen in decades. Sat inside at a large comfortable table and had a nice leisurely lunch. Servers weren't at all pushy. Food was good...not destination dining but good. Had a breakfast quesadilla and a white sangria. Stopped in after a late night event in the city. Since it was a beautiful night, we decided to sit outside. Our server immediately greeted us and took our drink orders. We ordered 2 hangover burgers and an order of fried shrimp. The burger was good, I just had to make sure the egg was done and not runny. When I first walked into the upstairs music venue, I was a little put off by its shape. It's very long and narrow. And dark. But once the show started (the amazing Bottle Rockets) it didn't seem to matter. There are stools along the walls and even if you don't have a stool you have a wall to lean on. The acoustics are surprisingly good. Staff friendly. Nice bartenders. OK bathroom. There's a restaurant downstairs but I didn't eat there so can't comment. I love the fact that little clubs like this still exist in the world of Livenation etc. It feels like New Orleans music scene. Unless you fear the show is going to sell out, you save a ton by buying at the door. No service fee. The Ticketfly fee was $11 for 2 $20 tix which is highway robbery. read more

Laconically put, craft beer has become horrendously overpriced. Commodity fetishism at its finest. That said, when I gave a sidelong glance at the list, I was pleasantly surprised to see that all draughts were $7, aside from the Troegs Mad Elf, which was pellucidly priced at $8. Hence, I thought, why not grab a pint? Little did I know the subterfuge that was at play. After receiving my beer in a plastic cup, which is another way for these places to cheat you, not to mention the environment, I awaited my change. The bartender handed it back to me, stating what I was putatively owed: "11 and a quarter." Immediately, the ire grew inside me. It says $7 on the board, and yet I'm charged $8.75?!? The music was loud, and the woman behind the bar had already moved on to someone else. Thus, I opted not to debate why I was hit with more than I bargained for. Funny true story I always end up here when I am walking for a very long period of time and give up on finding a bar I actually want to go into. As other reviewers have already said the canned beers here are a bit pricey but good lord you see the prices on the cocktail menu, I paid $12 for my first ever Old Fashioned which I immediately regretted after tasting the drink. Luckly my date helped me out with it as I think this will be my first and last Old Fashioned I will ever order. I am also giving the average three star review as I feel this is not a bar you come and mingle at. Been here about three times and never catch a good vibe. The menu looks extremely unhealthy as I perused it looking for a possible bite and couldn't find anything worth ordering. I was headed to Reading Market when I passed by MilkBoy. Glad I stopped in. The bartender was great, she even explained the taste profile of different menu items. The atmosphere was casual and laid back. There were some regulars in day drinking and chatting about where they were 18 years ago today - 9/11. The food was great, I had a Korean BBQ steak sandwich, but didn't eat most of the bread. At Milk Boy I was greeted promptly and seated immediately. Once I was seated I was offered a menu with plenty of time to review it. When the server returned she asked if I was prepared order but offered no suggestions or anything past hello. It was 10:30 with six people at the bar and only three tables to service. I asked what items were served with the 'City Wide' special. It sounded interesting so I went for it, a lager beer and a shot of whiskey for $6 why not? For lunch I ordered a cheeseburger that came with their version of French Fries. The burger has a nice grilled or flamed broiled flavor but not overwhelming. The fries were more like home fries, they were hot and delicious. I mentioned the time I arrived and the amount of people because my medium burger arrived 25 minutes after I placed the order. One of the draw-backs of becoming an occupational owl and working nights is the lack of viable drinking options after work. After finishing a shift, a colleague and I were in the mood for a brew before passing out, at around 8am. Much to my complete aghastion (not a word apparently) this place was open and LIT. We squeezed onto a high top near the open windows. I actually like being adjacent to the outdoors. Adjacent is the key word here. It was actually difficult to track down the bartender it was so poppin'. I have zero patience so I creeped behind as she was placing orders and then squeezed into the corner to place an order. Despite the fact that by some miracle I wasn't hungry, my dining companion suggested nachos. Fuck, she knows my weakness. I caved and very adamantly specified "no onions" when I placed my order. 7:30am-drinks-companion ordered a blue moon. Milkboy had me at both "pumpkin" and "stout". Despite the fact that I love both pumpkin (ShOuT oUt To My BaSiCc BiTcHeSsSs) and stouts, this brew was disgusting. I had to force it down while pinching my nose. The 'chos came pretty quickly. Just look at the photo to see how well they accomodated my "no onions" request. Unamused face. Because we were in a rush to get into bed, I didn't want to complain. My dining companion just tried to push off the onions as best as she could onto a napkin but it's difficult trying to filter them out and leave the seitan and tomatoes. I had to wade around the onions. Eating shouldn't require effort. When there was about 15% remaining in my stout glass, I ordered a bloody mary. Way too liquidy and horse radishy. Just remember that food starts at 8am. When we arrived, the staff welcomed us with a bright smile that woke our spirits and happily took our drink orders. Even though the kitchen was closed when we arrived, she took pity on our baggy eyes and got the special honey-covered bowl-o-bacon and fries before 8am. I tried the hot-toddy equivalent and a bite of the bacon (which I found to be a bit too chewy but helped warm the soul). Accompanied with fries, the Hangover Burger consist of a bacon, a sunny egg, American cheese and a house made beef patty, with jalapeños and white onions. The sentiment of my original review about MilkBoy still stands, however I finally had a chance to see a show upstairs. I think I may have a new favorite small venue. The spot is very intimate and essentially a big room with a stage at one end and a bar at the other. The room has more length than width, and the stage isn't too high of a platform. You can get up, close and personal with the bands. Not to mention there's no "back stage." Fangirl/fanboy away as the band walks up to the stage to start their gig. By far, my favorite aspect was the sound quality. I'm no physicists, but the long room did wonders for acoustics. That's such a huge deal, since I can think of some popular venues in this city with atrocious sound quality. I can't speak to all ticket pricing, but the show I attended in May 2018 was extremely inexpensive. I bought my tickets in advance online and paid $28.60 for two tickets when all was said and done with fees. How sad that the fees accounted for 30% of the cost! Day of tickets would've been $15. I'm curious if there are still fees if you buy at the venue. The venue was very laid back. They stamp your hand after scanning your ticket, you are free to move between the venue upstairs and the downstairs bar. The bar in the venue doesn't offer drafts and the beer selection isn't overly exciting. Downstairs I was able to grab a draft beer to bring back up. While their draft list isn't huge, I lucked out with one of my favorites: Half Acre Double Galactic Daisy Cutter. If you arrive before 7pm, you can even take advantage of happy hour. I absolutely love MilkBoy! It is a fun, laid back bar with a solid beer selection and consistently good food. The menu is bar food oriented, and perfect if you're in the mood for a tasty sandwich or great apps. However, if you're looking for a salad or something boring/healthy, maybe keep on walking to the organic supermarket a block away. I've noticed it can get a pretty good crowd for happy hour and on weekends, but don't let this deter you from stopping in. Milkboyyyyyyy....... Come Out & Play There were many ups & downs in the City of Brotherly Love. On the upside Meek Mill was released from prison, pending an appeal to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, the inevitable low came when the process so many Philly fans trusted ended at the hands of a much better coached Boston Celtics team. Fortunately, for JustGrubbin we only got to experience the ups this week had to offer, and it all started with a trip to Center City, where we were welcomed back to Milkboy Philly. The first time we showed up at their 11th & Chestnut location was for a BBQ & Art pop up. This time it was a much more intimate affair as Sous Chef Tyler Glover blessed us with a private tasting of menu items that he personally created and handcrafted. We also were treated to a behind the scenes look at some of their best-selling cocktails from the GM . I'll start with the cocktails, the first which was the "Chestnut Skinny Dip". It was quite honestly the most refreshing cocktail I've had all year; deep eddy ruby red vodka, lemongrass seltzer muddled with simple syrup. Simply delicious.... the name fits the drink perfectly because after a few of those someone's clothes is bound come off. Next we had "Here For A Good Thyme" which was clever play on words for this thyme infused cocktail. Gin, thyme infused simple syrup, grapefruit bitters, lemon juice, and it was gone in 60 seconds. The "Rittenhouse Old Fashioned" came with its very own magic trick. It's amazing how a lighter and an orange peel can transform a drink and take it to the next level, that burnt orange infused itself and manifested into an old-fashioned cocktail that I dare say was lit af. We made our way through some of the best cocktails Center City had to offer, now it's time for the main event. THE FOOD!!!! Sous Chef Tyler, but for sake of this article I'm just calling him Tyler the Creator, because I really think he should adopt that as a new nickname after everything he put in front of us. We started with a nice light Watermelon Frise salad. Arugula, frise, watermelon, heirloom tomatoes, goat cheese, and jalapeño basil vinaigrette. Perfect spring/summer salad the texture of the frise the sweetness of watermelon, creaminess of the goat cheese and bitterness from the vinaigrette gave you just about every flavor profile you're looking for, and this is just a fucking salad! Then he put down a plate of easily the best potato skins I've ever tasted. Extremely crisp potato skin was the bed for a savor bacon veloute sauce, crispy onions, chives, and finely grated cheese. Just the tip, of the iceberg those two lighter fares were, because now we were getting into the thick of it. On the menu this next dish is just named "Noodles" but please don't be fooled as there is so much more to it. Rice vermicelli noodles with mushrooms, carrots, cabbage, and red onion you know all the usual suspects in an Asian produce line up. All of this was lovely but the star of the show was undoubtably the sauce. It was a tamari based sauce (gluten-free, less salty, fermented soy sauce) with ginger, lemon and lime zest which was the perfect vehicle for this dish. Then he hits us with the Jerk Chicken Sandwich. He went back to his island roots on this one. Pulled Jerk chicken on wheat with apple frise slaw and mango aioli. After devouring this sandwich which had the perfect amount of heat coming through the slaw and mango aioli; I had no choice but to get up and do the winner winner chicken dinner dance (it closely resembles the milly rock). The crazy part is that there was still more food coming out With itis right around the corner we had to man up and fight it off for a couple more rounds. To increase the degree of difficulty to the fight; Tyler the Creator (yes I'm calling him that) brings out the Milkboy burgers. The first was the hangover burger replete with chili mayo, sautéed onions, apple wood smoked bacon, pickled peppers, American cheese and a sunny egg...... hangover heaven on a bun The second burger was his own play on the Big Mac, the "Big Milk". Two brisket blend parties, cheddar, lettuce, pickles, and their own version of special sauce which was pretty much gone as soon as the plate hit the table. We were definitely blessed by the burger gawdss on this tasting. Last but surely not least was the coup de gras, the raspberry glaze housemade donut. I had no room whatsoever left in my stomach but found a way to put this light airy, funnelcakish donut down in about two and a half bites. It was transcendent as it brung me back to a much simpler time of going to the state fair and the smell of funnel cake whisking in the air.
