I've been to Milkboy twice, and sadly, may never get an opportunity again as I live in Chicago. THIS PLACE ROCKS!!! On my first visit I choose Milkboy based on it's 'look' and proximity to the hotel I stayed at. On my second trip to Philadelphia, I actually salivated at the opportunity to go there when I arrived! They have a great menu and both times I had a killer sandwich. Can't remember what it was called, but it was awesome! Maryland fries. Very good. I ordered with extra cheese sauce.. I don't even like cheese but I LOVED these fries. Next time I'll get extra crab meat too as it was slightly sparse due to the large portion of fries. Great vibe here and it's cute. Bartender was nice and didn't feel any type of way about me only wanting the fries and no drinks. Not sure if the other guy I talked to outside was the manager but he persuaded me to step in when I asked him if they served fries. I really love that they have a seafood topping because I don't eat meat. Also some other interesting pesce items on the menu. I wish the bathrooms were cleaner and the one I used had no paper for me to wipe with (tmi) I had to walk like a duck to the next bathroom, very annoying. Four stars for this reason. The venue is very unorganized and staffed poorly from management to bartenders to bouncers. They double booked the venue when our event had the entire venue for the night. The kitchen manager was charged with the task of being my contact for the event and overlooked the entire arrangement put in place with the previous venue contact and were giving away free drinks on my dime.. they admitted their fault and made a half assed attempt to fix it.. they ripped me off essentially therefore ripping off a charity for cancer..if you want a crap show at a at best dive bar, you found the right place... go anywhere else to host a live show or private event. read more

Ordered food from here off of Caviar and was thoroughly impressed. We got a grilled cheese, tomato soup, and mint chocolate chip ice cream. We got the Roma grilled cheese and boy it was delicious!! The tomato soup was OK - it tasted more like pasta sauce than tomato soup but nonetheless was still good. I love how they include goldfish with the soup! Solid stop in the city for a drink if you're walking around and need a place to have a bite and a sip. We were there at an off hour (3pm or so?) so it was neither lunch nor happy hour. I think they were changing shifts, and the service was a little lackluster and our drinks for a party of 10 took quite a while to arrive (and many orders were just tap beer). I we sampled some of the apps (wings, mac and cheese) and I thought the food was fine, but nothing to rush back for. Five stars all the way. Went with my bf for the first time today. Such a great, local vibe and look. Menu was not overly large which led me to believe everything would be delicious. We were we not disappointed. I enjoyed the fried chicken sandwich and my boyfriend the hangover burger. Mmmm mmm mmm. Very good. Loved the pickle flavor of the chicken, I'm so gonna pickle brine mine at home from now on. I've failed to experience anything at Milkboy that would justify a rating higher than 3-stars. I really wanted to give it more, but why would I? The food is A-OK and service is nothing to jump up and down about. They do have a decent selection of beers, but a majority of them are in cans and seem a bit pricey for cans at that. I do love sitting downstairs with the garage doors open on a light spring or fall day. It also is in a great spot if you work at Jefferson (which I don't). Throw all that in a bag and mix together and you'll pull out a 3-star review. read more

Long before I knew of Milkboy's incredible cafe's in Ardmore and Bryn Mawr, I knew about their state of the art recording studio, and the widespread number of eclectic musicians that it has linked the name to in the past. Suburbia just didn't offer the capacity or sound levels that the Milkboy name had the potential to rock out on. So their Philly location was a no brainer that I had been waiting years for as a result. I had my first chance to check it out during the Yelp Intern Event and I was instantly enamored. Downstairs still gave the same cafe feel that you'd become accustomed to from the other spots, while adding in a full bar with some choice drafts and an impressive food menu. the meatballs, wraps, chicken wings, and other choice bites we were offered were delicious, and have me ready to try it out for a food visit. And I especially can't wait to try boozy coffee drinks like the Picket Line that Sue suggested. Upstairs yielded an impressive stage, and a bar that has plenty of booze and the most impressive selection of canned beers that I've seen any bar offer. From basics like PBR and Rolling Rock, to craft brews like Six Point and Oskar Blues, to imports like Strongbow and Becks; if its a beer that comes in a can then there's a good chance that they'll have it. I finally went to a show when my friends Penrose (http://penrose.bandcamp.com/) and En Fuego (http://enfuego.bandcamp.com/) celebrated En Fuego's Album Release and I was definitely in awe. The sound was perfection, and the lights and smoke effects were flawless enough to the point that they were even able to be controlled from an IPAD (I think I finally have a reason to want one!). The shared bathroom situation was the only thing that was kind of awkward, but it was a manageable hassle. Since that point Milkboy has soldiered on with some eclectic show lineups. The boy found the punch bowl intriguing so we stopped in one weekend during the day. They didn't have it. The waitress said it was because they didn't have the glasses for it. We just had beers and an order of fries just to have a bite. It was hot inside and the floor to ceiling windows were open so rendering the inside and outside seating virtually seamless. This I thought was a mistake. In Philly weather where rain is likely but unpredictable, the humidity intense, and 3-4 months of a year are subject to snow, outdoor seating is rarely a pleasant option, there's no reason to render the inside of the establishment as unbearable as the outside. The beers were mostly canned; there were few drafts. The fries, topped with cheese and jalapenos, were unremarkable (also, inexplicably cut into sheets although that's neither here nor there). While nothing was terribly overpriced, it was abundantly clear that we overpaid for products ranging from less than to just about mediocre. I've never seen the place packed to the brim, but I've certainly seen it busier than when we visited. This is maybe a decent stop for quick and moderately priced dinner and drinks? Not sure I would return any time soon with all the other great options around, but I am still curious about that punch. read more

I arrived in Philly around 2 pm on Friday, so by the time I checked into my hotel and got ready to find a late lunch, it was past 2:30 pm and most places had already closed for their mid-day break between lunch and dinner. I saw that MilkBoy was still open around 3 pm, so I made the 10 minute walk from Center City to MilkBoy. It seems like a good spot for Happy Hour after work, and is conveniently located across from the Thomas Jefferson University hospital, but if you're looking for a lunch spot a little earlier in the day, there are definitely better/cheaper options. There's an awesome outdoor seating section and an upstairs venue which is a mini concert hall for shows. The Grub- Classic Cheeseburger, no frills. I wasn't overly impressed with this burger. Nothing to write home about and nothing that really grabbed my attention. The staff was awesome with accommodating my request of no gluten. They put my burger, sans mayo on lettuces. Fries- I don't know what MilkBoy is doing, but IMO this is the reason to come here if you are eating. These fries are unlike anything I've ever tasted. Crispy, the perfect amount of potato and still hot! Drinks- They offer City Wides. If you aren't in the know...City Wides are kind of a big deal and hella awesome. Beer + Shot = (typically) $6. Offered all day. MilkBoy have 3 different offerings. They also have tons of ciders (GF), but none are on tap. Service- More than one waitress should be working on college ball Saturday. This is now my second time at milk boy, first time having food. I really don't know what their deal is with the service. I came to eat around 10pm on a Tuesday. There were only a few other tables around us. We ordered a few drinks, two apps, and two main dishes. Drinks came so slowly after being reminded numerous times. All of the food came out together after we asked for the apps first. We were told "idk why they came out together". Well I do, because you put the order in wrong. Don't blame the kitchen. Ok, rant over. We ordered fries and the bacon bowl to start. Omg. The bacon bowl. Incredible. Yes, bacon is my favorite food. But in a bowl with maple syrup and spices?! Amazing. Fries were really good for just fries too. Then we both ordered the pork belly tacos. Also wonderful. They came with three tacos overfilled with meat and then an extra three shells. SO let me start by saying, this is not likely to be my last visit to Milkboy and probably not my last review -- there is time for redemption. Our server was very knowledgable and sweet. She ran down all the the beer subsitutions (and there were quite a few) and seemed to know what she was talking about with regard to the beer selection. We didn't have to wait long for service and our beers were delivered promptly. I ordered chips and salsa. Unfortunately they were sub-par but this isn't a mexican restaurant so I wasn't expecting a whole lot. Just a little something to fill my belly before I destoryed my liver at the Flyers game. Others got burritos, meatball veggie soup, etc. Everyone had kind of the same reaction to their food as I did to mine... it was just "okay." The real issue I had was with the check. First, the check took forever. We were on the way to a Flyers game and were pressed for time. Second, when you advise of substitutions to your beer list you should also mention that said substitutions are not equal in price to the originals. The bill was a bit surprising because we were expecting that the $5 beer would have been substituted with another $5 beer -- not a $6 beer. Finally, when you take my money to ring me out please do so with some courtesy for my time. Taking the check and then chatting with your coworkers for 10+ minutes before you even get to the register with it is totally unacceptable. I am sure that conversation about your plans for after work could have waited 5 minutes while you rang me up and returned my credit card to me. Seems they have some kinks to work out but the beer was solid and I'll likely give them a 2nd shot before deciding they aren't worth the time. read more

This was my second time at Milkboy, and couldn't have been more different than the last. The service tonight was great, our waitress was extremely knowledgeable of the beer and cocktails, as well as the food menu. The issue this evening is that they have hired a new chef and are in the process of changing the menu for the summer. This lead to multiple trips back to our table for our waitress to let us know that we could not actually get what we ordered. In the end we got the dry rubbed chicken wings, steak tacos (which they made Korean style with kimchi since they couldn't make the Korean sandwich or BBQ pork tacos) and a dry-rubbed burger with Tasso ham. The burger was served with bacon instead of the Tasso ham, which was instantly noticeable- but neither our waitress or our table was informed of he substitution. The flavor and portion size of the tacos were both great, and the burger was cooked perfectly, just not up to expectations set by the menu description. If you are a bourbon fan, absolutely get the Bourbon Chai cocktail, served in a mason jar and just strong enough to make you happy you chose that over your standard old fashioned. I would definitely come back again, but I'll wait until after they're out of this transition stage. read more

Drinks are so good here. Wow. Milkboy-Tai is a play on a Mai Tai and it was absolutely delicious. Pretty strong too because I was definitely a little tipsy after that + my Moscow Mule (standard to-go drink for me!). $2 off delicious cocktails and reasonable craft beer - there was this honey beer that my friend ordered and it wasn't too sweet and wasn't too bitter. There's a specific chalkboard dedicated to their craft beers that aren't much more expensive than draft beers so go with those for sure. Though it was pretty crowded for a Tuesday happy hour, my friend and I managed to snag a high top table and were waited on which was nice. She came over to check in just enough that it wasn't bothersome or annoying so props ;) She also did a great job in recommending the Milkboy-Tai so that's probably why I was happy. read more

At the intersection of 11th and Chestnut, there exists a watering hole with a consistently good selection of brews on tap. At the intersection of waiting for my better half to leave work and wanting to unwind after a busy day me-self, lies a reason to patronize this establishment. The 6-7 times that we have enjoyed a pour here, we have never been disappointed with the craft brew selections or the service at the bar. The bartenders are very friendly and efficient. On Tuesday's, there's a weekly Jazz Quartet performing under the stairs that is a treat to ones ears. No cover. We have ordered appetizers on one occasion and found the selections to be decent and up to bar food standards. The rest of the times, we went with a cheap eat option in Philly's Chinatown prior to heading home. As beer lovers, we would give this place 4-stars. read more

Both times I've been here my servers were friendly and gave recommendations which were spot on - I'm glad I went with their advice. They have traditional pub food like wings, hummus, sliders, chips and salsa but then there's the non-traditional - bacon bowl (why isn't everyone serving this?!), fried chicken skins, and cheese curds. This place gets crowded quickly, but let me tell you, the apps are totally worth the wait! They also have live music during the week in the upstairs seating area.There is definitely limited seating on the first floor which is where most people seem to hang out. But the outdoor seating area is decent especially on nice days BUT it's on the sidewalk so people are rushing past you - keep your purse close ladies! The rating is for the seating/bathrooms which could use an upgrade. Overall if you are looking for a fun place to just chill, I would definitely recommend this place. read more
