The server/owner? Was warm and playful from the moment I walked in. I got the mixed samosas to start. Both really good, but I like the lentil for the spicier flavors. I got the chicken tibs, and they came out on a plate of injera with a delicious tossed salad. The flavors were amazing. I've visited a few Ethiopian places in east Portland. It has very limited parking in front and, in general. You are going to have hit a few blocks (1-4 hr) because, it's a lot of 30 min parking signs on this particular street. It upstairs on the second floor of the red building. It's a very spacious, clean, and restrooms to the right of you! I will say that we ordered the basil fried rice which was fabulous. I added chicken. It was not chewy and weird like most places. Lots of seasoning. Definitely would get that again hands-down. My wife got the fried rice that had the peanut sauce. It was just middle of the road for me. And she got eggrolls and said they were great. We paid cash and needed change but for some reason the waitress just put the remaining cash in the tip jar without bringing us change or asking, which we thought was really strange so maybe something to watch for if paying with cash. Our little family shared a meat and vegetable combination platter that was really delicious, the injera was perfect, and the service was very attentive, warm and welcoming. The cafe is in the process of installing an expanded coffee service -- adding an expresso machine in addition to providing traditional Ethiopian coffee - and they have Ethiopian breakfast on the menu! An added bonus for us is that the owner (one of the owners?) is a soccer fan (who used to play for Lewis & Clark) and no doubt one can catch a game on the TV there while enjoying a delicious meal and a beer. :-) Closed Tuesdays.

I did not taste curry at all, only coconut. Not a speck of curry flavor. It was weird, because the noodles were yellow...my brain kept expecting flavor that never came. It screamed for salt, and there was none on the table. It also left a bland, chalky coating on your tongue. The tofu in the dish was not good. The pieces were cut all different sizes and it had a musty bitter flavor that I was not expecting. I couldn't even eat it. I was also surprised that the dish lacked vegetables...it was garnished with raw red onion, cilantro, and some horrible dry store-bought brand crunchy noodles. I was shocked by how much I hated that dish. The okra dish was a little better (it actually had some flavor) but it was very one-note and I would not call it good. The main flavor I got was smoked paprika, which was kinda nice but overpowering, as it tasted raw and needed to be cooked through more. The tiny potatoes were raw which was really not cool. There's not much I hate more than undercooked potatoes. The eggplant was also undercooked and spongy. The okra was ok. Even the rice was not good. It was mushy and came in a pathetically tiny portion served in a small cup that was barely half full. The samosas were probably the worst thing we had. I wouldn't even call it a samosa. It was a tiny greasy triangle of mostly dough. There was a single pea and a tiny smear of overly-salty potato filling. I was shocked at how bad they were. My wife didn't even finish hers even though it was tiny. It was that bad. Worse than the food was the stupid robot waiter. We had to push a gross (obviously smeared and dirty) button to make the robot go away after bringing our food. And we could tell that the waitress was also annoyed by it, as she had to walk it through the restaurant like it was a toddler taking its first steps. So dumb. This was the worst and most expensive lunch I have had EVER. It is rare that I try a new place and don't like anything I try. It was kind of shocking, actually. I will never be back.
