1) We walk in and we were the only customers there. 2 male employees were having a conversation at the host stand. It took over 5 minutes for the host to walk over and drop off a menu. He started to walk away but stopped when I asked to order. It's not like they have a large menu and we were ready to eat. During the meal I waited for the host to look over but my dining companion called out to him to get my water glass refilled. I was a little put off by the slow service. We're your only customers and you're not happy to see us? You're not going to give us your undivided attention? You're going to slowly serve us like we're an after thought? 2) Why is it called Sisters when I see no females working there? 3) The food did come out quickly as it seems everything is already made. 4) The food tasted good. It was our first Ethiopian experience but unfortunately did not leave a positive, lasting memory. We will not be back. 5) After our meal we waited and waited. It seemed we were required to pay at the host stand rather than at our table. This was difficult for my friend who uses a cane, but we had no choice. 6) I've been to a Moroccan restaurant before where it is also customary to eat with your hands. One of the few Ethiopian restaurants in Portland that has an entirely gluten-free food menu, including the injera, which is 100% teff flour and not cut with wheat flour like many other Ethiopian restaurants! Service was great! There was a large group who came in right before us who hadn't gotten their food, but we were still in and out within a little over an hour. Server was very friendly, responsive to questions, and gave us recommendations. I also overheard him, as well as the cook, very kindly speak to a table of high school girls about what to avoid because one of them didn't like spicy food. Both my partner and I ordered our own dishes instead of eating family style and we both went home with leftovers for a second meal and paid about $50 total, so a pretty good value! There is a very small parking lot that is a little sketchy to park in because there's no room to turn around and you can only back into the street behind you (one of which is 122nd). I loved this place so much. The service was impeccable and the food was as good as I've had. All the positive reviews about Sisters are true to form. I truthfully didnt read any reviews but we had nothing but good to say about the total experience so i can't really report on negative reviews..only positive. So truthfully i had no idea what to expect but i can say i was pleasantly surprised with how authentic the flavors were. Ok ok, keep reading if you want to get deep into it.. I was there because Ethiopian food is by far the most romantic and intimate cuisine I've discovered to date. And I frequent it. The flavors are bold and original. The staples range from safe, to raw seasoned beef and curried lamb. An American fair ground of new flavors to explore. We opted for the raw seasoned beef with Ayib, which is a wonderful cheese that adds all the good things that anyone could ask for to the dish. If you wanted more because you need an endorphin release they've got you covered there as well. Primarily because they asked the spice level and delivered perfectly, but second fiddle was the small pile of additional party spice that they place on the side rustically so that you can add it yourself. Its not offensively hot whatsoever so please do experiment with it. You wont be disappointed. Or bring a small container and bring it home. Im only disappointed i wont have any tomorrow lol So raw beef, ya, get that. The other dish we had was an amazing red beef curry with all the right accompaniments. Perfectly cooked peppers and onions paired with just the right amount of heat and sweet balance. We investigated a medium heat level and it was safe. Very safe. Very good. Like so comfortable they should just go with one option lol Hot was an option and next time i will probably try that. I'll probably recant my medium argument. The ways spice was used as a paintbrush was so thoughtful, and im pretty sure we didnt even get into the good stuff. Whoever is in the kitchen creating this experience really hit all the keys just right tonight. The last thing i wanted to mention was the honey wine. First of all its extremely reasonably priced. Like less than many of the drinks i frequent, for the whole bottle. At first its..different.. and somewhat jarring when taken back without food. Not unpleasant, just different. But when its consumed with the food it makes, oh oh oh so much sense. It really turns the meal into more of an absolute symphony. This place would be on repeat if i lived closer. No utensils are needed as it's served with a grey sponge like bread that one uses to scoop up the food. No meat was involved in this meal, I really didn't miss it. Delicious, affordable food made by very sweet people! The portions are huge and my friend and I always seem to have leftovers. We always order the Special Combo along with the Kitfo. This is the first place I've ever tried Kitfo, and it is amazing. Kitfo is minced raw beef, marinated in a spice blend and clarified butter. I think I've had it both raw and rare here, and it is really delicious! Be sure to mix the beef into the spice pile served with it! The injera is tangy and chewy and wonderful! I almost went with a three but I'm feeling that COVID generosity. I have a couple of my favorite Ethiopian places so I know what good Ethiopian tastes like. It's been a long time. I'd say 10 years since my last. I got the lamb tibbs. It's basically small lamb chunks and onions in a sauce. The meat was a little gristly for my taste. Also having ordered medium I expected it to be spicier. Unfortunately overall it was just really salty. I appreciate that the injera is plentiful. You get the full tray and an extra roll up (I don't know the proper unit) However the flavor of it is really strong. I know most places it's pretty innocuous, but not here. Very sour and flavorful. So if that your thing then great. The prices are a little steep. Not sure I would return. At least not by myself. read more

Drove past this spot in my neighborhood for years before I finally went in and discovered what I'd been missing out on. Went with one vegan, one meat eater and one gluten free person, and we all left very happy and very full. Everything was so delicious! Been coming here over a a year and absolutely love the food. The service is always fast and nice, I always feel welcomed and served fast even on a busy day. We typically get a special combo to share with my wife and you can't really beat $20 for a filling dish for two. You can ask for spicy which basically adds chopped jalapeno peppers which go nice with everything in the dish. We've almost eaten everything here and so far it's all been delicious.
