First time trying Ethiopian food and it was surprisingly tasty! Actually once I stepped in the restaurant I knew this visit wouldn't disappoint me because it smelled so good in the restaurant. I'd never had Ethiopian food before but those mukbang videos made really want to try it. To sum it up, it was a big success. The stuffed jalapeño was quite spicy simply because of the jalapeño itself. I can handle spicy food very well (like Sichuan hotpot and the black Korean buldak ramen), but if you're a salt pepper butter kind of person, it will burn your tongue and you will suffer. We had a veggie and meat combo because my partner is vegetarian and I'm not. I chose fish and beef for my meats. The texture of the injera was quite similar to what I'd imagined, only the flavor itself was a little more sour than I expected. It was very soft yet had a perfectly subtle chewiness. It went really well with the meat dishes especially the fish. Speaking of the dishes, I'd say the pepper beef is about 85% similar to some Chinese stir fried beef with bell peppers. It's simple and savory and I had no problem accepting the flavor. The fish dish tasted like some tomato based meat stew I'd had somewhere before, but with an extra layer of fragrance and flavor that I'd never had before. It took 0 seconds for my Chinese palate and belly to accept and love the food I had. In fact I feel like all the dishes would go so well with a bowl of white rice too. That's probably something I'd like to try when I'm back in Seattle. And the lady at the restaurant was very friendly and helpful, when she saw us struggling picking up food with the only dry injera left, she brought two more to us. And she made me less nervous about trying new dishes. read more

It brings me great sadness to write this review for unnecessary salt in the dishes. I ordered the meat combo for take out. On the positive side it was well proportioned. They offered the choice of beef or lamb, and the lamb was good quality. The greens and meat was a good option. The injera was fine. I am not from the Horn of Africa, but I have friends who have worked there. My metric for berbere is Jara's and I make my own berbere. I think of berbere as flavored by paprika, ginger, cinnamon, coriander - warm spices, region specific equivalents, and optionally cloves. At every Ethiopian restaurant I try dishes with it. So not being from the Horn of Africa, I have no idea on their use of salt. But my preference is no. This restaurant adds salt to their berbere. I cannot think of any Ethiopian restaurants I reviewed doing that. The most beautiful foods are flavored by ingredients. Salt is not always a necessary ingredient. They have a nice restaurant, seating area, service was fast, and the staff were perfect. read more

Hmm I thought I liked Ethiopian food. We ordered take out through door dash and was dismayed to see the prodigious use of plastic. Plastic bags, plastic containers, plastic everything. Not a deal breaker, but it's a bummer to receive take out in a bunch of plastic. The injera was really bitter and the flavors on both the veggie and meat combo felt muddled with a similar spice profile of berbere in all dishes. This is my first time at this restaurant and I was so excited to share an authentic Ethiopian meal with my friend who has never had this cuisine before! This restaurant is easy to miss from the main road and there is a small parking lot. We came on a Saturday when it just opened so there was only one other group, but it does seem like they have regulars too. The restaurant is clean, well-lit, and transport you into another culture. We were greeted right away by the lovely host/server and she was very helpful with the menu and explaining the different dishes. Even though there were only two of us, we decided to get the Gebeta Special plate that came with 5 meats and 3 veggie dishes on the iconic injera. (I am still eating the leftovers over 2 meals!) It did take more than 40 minutes to get our food, but it came on a beautifully patterned plate with all the fixings. The Injera was sour and spongy, the perfect vessel for scooping up all the yummy meat and veggie sides by hand. My favorite was the cabbage dish but everything was delicious and packed with flavor! Gebeta on Alberta is a newcomer and has already taken over the top slot in my Ethiopian food rankings. The food is generous and flavorful. This last visit we ordered the veggie combo and the beef gomen. Gomen is greens and the beef cubes gave it an extra kick of delicious. They give you ample injera too. The space is basic but nice and you'll likely see some Ethiopian music videos. Thumbs up. read more

Took a chance on this hole in the wall place and think I just found my favorite Ethiopian place in Portland. They give generous portions at affordable price and everything was delicious. My partner and I tried a bunch of vegetarian items. The lentil sambusas were so flavorfully simple and the lentil injera appetizer was super delicious. Came here for dinner during a layover. It gives hole in the wall vibes but was pretty solid. Decor was cute and the bathroom was clean. Service was fast which was a blessing since we had a short layover. They had tvs going so you can watch sports. We had Fit fit which spicy and so good. We had gotten their sampler I think and it had SO much food. They aren't kidding when they say it is food for 4 people. It really is for 4 people unless you are all big eaters. Excellent Ethiopian food on NE Killingsworth, as long as you're willing to be patient and wait. We went for the meat and vegetable combo and chose beef and lamb along with collard greens, red lentils, cabbage & potatoes & carrots, and salad, The meal was really fine, carefully prepared, perfectly spiced, so good that we're already looking forward to our next visit. The one downside was the time it took the kitchen to bring out our food. After we sat down and ordered, we waited over a half hour. The friendly waiter/bartender told us the kitchen was slammed and said we could always call ahead. We ordered $90 worth of food from this restaurant tonight. Two veggie combos and one meat entree. The food arrived in one container. And it wasn't what we ordered! The poor uber eats driver said the staff refused to give him a ticket and kept brushing him off when he tried to confirm the correct order. Once he arrived at our house and we acknowledged the order was incorrect, he called them 3 times but they didn't answer. I understand mistakes happen but this was egregious. This place is a hidden gem in NE Portland. I am so glad I found them. I was greated with amazing smells and smiles at the door. Super friendly people. You can tell the food was made with love. Ethiopian food is in regular rotation of my diet and all I can say is their food is top notch. I am vegetarians and their veggie combo is easily two to three meals and was fire. Their Sambusa may be the best I have had. I don't know what my wife had but no words where spoken during dinner ... too busy eating. Oh and they are open until 10 on weekdays.
