It brings me great sadness to write this review for unnecessary salt in the dishes. I ordered the meat combo for take out. On the positive side it was well proportioned. They offered the choice of beef or lamb, and the lamb was good quality. The greens and meat was a good option. The injera was fine. I am not from the Horn of Africa, but I have friends who have worked there. My metric for berbere is Jara's and I make my own berbere. I think of berbere as flavored by paprika, ginger, cinnamon, coriander - warm spices, region specific equivalents, and optionally cloves. At every Ethiopian restaurant I try dishes with it. So not being from the Horn of Africa, I have no idea on their use of salt. But my preference is no. This restaurant adds salt to their berbere. I cannot think of any Ethiopian restaurants I reviewed doing that. The most beautiful foods are flavored by ingredients. Salt is not always a necessary ingredient. They have a nice restaurant, seating area, service was fast, and the staff were perfect. read more

The lentil sambusa was very tasty! I highly recommend it. The lentil filling was very addicting, especially with the spicy green sauce it came with. My friend and I shared the meat and veggie feast platter. It was a nice variety but I feel like it was lacking something. Maybe I'm used to the inerja being a bit more sour. read more

Hmm I thought I liked Ethiopian food. We ordered take out through door dash and was dismayed to see the prodigious use of plastic. Plastic bags, plastic containers, plastic everything. Not a deal breaker, but it's a bummer to receive take out in a bunch of plastic. The injera was really bitter and the flavors on both the veggie and meat combo felt muddled with a similar spice profile of berbere in all dishes. Maybe we just need to avoid take out, but this was a pass for me. read more

Gebeta on Alberta is a newcomer and has already taken over the top slot in my Ethiopian food rankings. The food is generous and flavorful. This last visit we ordered the veggie combo and the beef gomen. Gomen is greens and the beef cubes gave it an extra kick of delicious. They give you ample injera too. The space is basic but nice and you'll likely see some Ethiopian music videos. Thumbs up. read more

This is my first time at this restaurant and I was so excited to share an authentic Ethiopian meal with my friend who has never had this cuisine before! This restaurant is easy to miss from the main road and there is a small parking lot. We came on a Saturday when it just opened so there was only one other group, but it does seem like they have regulars too. The restaurant is clean, well-lit, and transport you into another culture. We were greeted right away by the lovely host/server and she was very helpful with the menu and explaining the different dishes. Even though there were only two of us, we decided to get the Gebeta Special plate that came with 5 meats and 3 veggie dishes on the iconic injera. (I am still eating the leftovers over 2 meals!) It did take more than 40 minutes to get our food, but it came on a beautifully patterned plate with all the fixings. The Injera was sour and spongy, the perfect vessel for scooping up all the yummy meat and veggie sides by hand. My favorite was the cabbage dish but everything was delicious and packed with flavor! Came here for dinner during a layover. It gives hole in the wall vibes but was pretty solid. Decor was cute and the bathroom was clean. Service was fast which was a blessing since we had a short layover. They had tvs going so you can watch sports. We had Fit fit which spicy and so good. We had gotten their sampler I think and it had SO much food. They aren't kidding when they say it is food for 4 people. It really is for 4 people unless you are all big eaters. Located in a business area and it is pretty good. Definitely recommend coming by if you ever want some non airport food or just want some solid Ethiopian food. read more

We ordered $90 worth of food from this restaurant tonight. Two veggie combos and one meat entree. The food arrived in one container. And it wasn't what we ordered! The poor uber eats driver said the staff refused to give him a ticket and kept brushing him off when he tried to confirm the correct order. Once he arrived at our house and we acknowledged the order was incorrect, he called them 3 times but they didn't answer. I understand mistakes happen but this was egregious. We went for the meat and vegetable combo and chose beef and lamb along with collard greens, red lentils, cabbage & potatoes & carrots, and salad, The meal was really fine, carefully prepared, perfectly spiced, so good that we're already looking forward to our next visit. The one downside was the time it took the kitchen to bring out our food. After we sat down and ordered, we waited over a half hour. The friendly waiter/bartender told us the kitchen was slammed and said we could always call ahead. A minor note: the injera on the platter was cold, as if it had just been taken out of the refrigerator. This place is a hidden gem in NE Portland. I am so glad I found them. I was greated with amazing smells and smiles at the door. Super friendly people. You can tell the food was made with love. Ethiopian food is in regular rotation of my diet and all I can say is their food is top notch. I am vegetarians and their veggie combo is easily two to three meals and was fire. Their Sambusa may be the best I have had. I don't know what my wife had but no words where spoken during dinner ... too busy eating. Oh and they are open until 10 on weekdays. Goddamn good! I know of three great Ethiopian restaurants in Portland that have come and gone over the last 25 years. For more than five years, we haven't known of a decent local option, only eating Ethiopian when visiting Seattle. Last night, we looked on Yelp, and saw this place, located in a weird location. All of the reviews were good, so we went. 1. The address listed on Yelp is incorrect. Killingsworth doesn't go out as far as 76th, it is actually on Lombard, just east of where Killingsworth merges into Lombard. 2. The building is a former office space located on the west side of Sunbelt Rentals. Don't let that fool you. You are at the right place. 3. They have a genuine parking lot. Many Portland restaurants don't, which is why those restaurants don't get our business. 4. It is very small inside, and spare. Don't let that dissuade you. 5. There is one eager-to-please server, and one cook, as near as I can tell. Don't expect fast service. Just be patient. 6. The one server is also the bartender. His cocktail repertoire is limited, but he is learning. We ordered a lemon drop, for which he had to use the recipe book. That said, it was a very good drink. They have a decent assortment of beer on tap, but they have no African beer brands, for now. 7. The food is fantastic. The assa gulash was flavorful, but doesn't taste "fishy". The lentil sambusas were very tasty and hot. We got their stuffed jalepeños, which are essentially a type of salad. I got a dish made with jerked meat (forget the name) that was delicious. And their injera bread was very good, and they didn't complain when we ordered one more. The next time we go, I will be getting the kitfo. 8. The restaurant was empty when we arrived. By the time we left, the bar was full and several tables were full. There were a number of people of Ethiopian heritage eating, which tells me that they are authentic. read more
