I usually can't go downtown for drinks without stopping by millers. If it's a nice summer day or night I'd definitely sit outside on the patio... sometimes it smells like ass inside. Sometimes my friends see a mice outside under the trees but I can't say I look down that often. Apparently this place sells the most PBR in the country so grab a pitcher of that. First floor: if you're with a small group and want to crowd up the bar then this is where you stand. Or if you're fancy and want to listen to jazz you can sit at a table. Second floor: probably a good place to pregame the night in the booth. Maybe grab a jalapeño corn dog because even the guy from Kentucky says its the bomb digitty. Or get the super hot chicken tenders if you want a fire in your mouth. Third floor: your group probably has a bunch of low key chain smokers who'll talk your ear off about how much they love drugs. Or maybe you're addicted to betting and want to watch townies play pool. Or maybe this is just a great place to be and you're contemplating if you really need that order of cheese fries. Charlottesville big nasty . The chef told me they call it the howard stern in the kitchen! I guess because of the cheese! This place is serious! The kitchen is full of creativity! Tattoos , earrings and all the cool cooks look ! Busy and food was on point ! They want to do well ! My cathead biscuit was perfect! Pimento sausage gravy was money ! Lovely ambiance with a classy bar, good service, okay food, and decent prices. This restaurant has a cozy feel to it, perfect for cold, rainy days! I love the bar- plenty of bar seats, lots of liquors on display, and great design and decor overall. We started off with the lobster bisque to share. It's pricey (around $8) for a small bowl of soup of a slice of buttered toast. The server did warn us about the tiny size when we placed the order. But I thought it was worth it! It was very rich and flavorful, complete with bits of lobster bites every spoonful. Didn't care too much for the toast- too buttery, but my boyfriend liked it. For entrees we both got burgers. I got the single patty black angus burger. The meat was good quality but a little dry (will definitely go for medium as opposed to well done next time). The lettuce and tomato were really fresh. I didn't get any special sauces or dressing with my burger so it felt a tad bland. The chips were good but I wish they were a little warmer. My boyfriend upgraded his chips to fries instead for $3. Worth the upgrade! The fries were delicious. Miller's burgers are definitely less greasy and salty than other burgers I've tried, so plus one for health, but it definitely tasted a tad more bland. Prices are great for a restaurant in Downtown Mall. A single patty burger was around $6 or so with free chips. I was very stuffed after that meal. You can also customize your burger and add bacon, Mac n cheese, avocado, etc to it. Overall, good experience. Miller's has great food, friendly service, and good seating despite being in the center of the busy Charlottesville Downtown Mall. The downstairs and outdoor seating areas are great, the upstairs seating area does allow smoking, and has TVs and pool tables. The food is good, there is a wide selection and the menu is affordable. The live music is really fun and I would recommend going on a night with music! read more

Miller's is quickly becoming my friends and my go to place for late night drinks. Miller's offers cool, surprisingly classy décor with prompt friendly bar service and robust food menu that goes late into the night. Foodwise, I've tried the Nashville hot fried chicken and the huge corn dogs (come as set of two). The Nashville hot chicken is awesome and legit spicy and the corn dogs are awesome. Drinks are reasonably priced and I believe the upstairs offers a more sports bar like vibe (I've yet to be up there though) if you want something a little more chill. I believe smoking is allowed up there though and it can give downstairs a bit of a smokey odor as well (but its not too bad). Miller's frequently has live music which makes it somewhat unique on the mall (Whiskey Jar also often has live music). read more

Great Spot! I'm in Charlottesville on a work trip with some co-workers and we needed a spot to take a break after working non-stop the last few days... Miller's was the perfect place. Old world bar feel with dark wood and booths. Exactly what we needed. Had some hot wings - with their special Valentina sauce and Nashville hot spicy dry rub. Fried green tomato salad was awesome. And then I got the Nasty Chicken Biscuit Sandwich which was super delicious. Most importantly, The staff was awesome. Greeted and welcomed us in, told us all about the restaurant and the specials, welcomed us into town, and showed great hospitality the entire visit. I try not to judge a book on its cover. I really wanted oysters and passed up Whiskey Bar which had fresh oysters because we saw Miller's and know that its been there forever and I'm always trying to support local, long-standing establishments. Anyway, the chalk board outside the bar said there were fresh oysters... we ordered drinks and ordered the oysters to find out that they ran out of oysters ... yesterday. I get that its a little divey and that its has a lot of history but like... update the board at least daily. Also, its a little confusing because it took so long for our waiter to take our order because they are supposed to take them on a tablet but the tablet is so much longer than if he were to just write it down. It's this weird juxtaposition of being an establishment with a lot of rich history not updating their board out front but yet they have these almost too modern technology that is actually making them provide worse service. We ordered our drinks and left but I probably wouldn't go back. I felt duped that we went in there for oysters but then they were out since the day before. I've only been here twice and both times I was seated outside so I can update this review when I return and we go inside. I've been to Miller's for lunch and brunch. The menu is extensive and there were a lot of things that sounded good to try. The burger I had the time I came for lunch was delicious and the fries were well seasoned. For brunch, I had chicken and waffles this time for brunch which were clearly very fresh with chicken fried right before arriving to me which was perfect. My husband ordered a steak and cheese scramble that he absolutely raved about. Service was ok the first time and much better the second time. We got our food pretty quickly and were well taken care of with our dog too so I'd say we will be back! read more

There's a lot to like about this place. The food is generally better than it needs to be for the menu and location. The service is solid. The prices are about what you would expect all things considered. I started with lobster bisque. The base was a little thin and under flavored but it was full of puréed lobster meat. The dry aged burger was tremendous. Large size, big dry aged beef flavor and very juicy. The bun has trouble keeping up with the moisture but gets it done. Good bacon and cheese too. I sub the house chips (over cooked and flavorless other than the burnt taste) for the grilled Mac and cheese. Never had this before and it's quite good. Service is good but the kitchen is slow and can't follow directions creating the need for a refire. Attention to details is an issue. Overall worth a visit. read more

I wanted to love this place on so many levels. First of... seating outside on the mall under the trees... a selection of beers that only cost a dollar to clean out the inventory... BURGERS!!! and other delightful menu items... plus, I love a good looking dive bar. The thing is... we stopped in for a nice lunch under the trees in the middle of a pretty long drive back to PA from NC. We ordered appropriately and while everyone around us enjoyed their food, ours never arrived. When I finally flagged down my server, she explained that they tell their guests that their food does sometimes take a while to prepare. A med-rare burger and special sandwich weren't a complicated order, so this left me a little wary of her explanation. Finally, minutes later my food arrives and my mother still has nothing in front of her. Apparently the server forgot to ring in our order. And to be honest, after noting how busy she was, I don't blame her. Anyway, my mom finally gets her food, our entire meal was comped and the manager was kind enough to touch our table to apologize. While the entire thing put a big delay in our trip and caused a bit of frustration, we were beyond appreciative of the steps the restaurant took to amend the unfortunate situation. read more

Visited 12/16/09 I journeyed to Miller's Downtown as many Dave Matthews fans do, and as other reviews imply, the staff was not eager to discuss the topic. Personally, the entire point to driving the distance was never for a second hand account of Dave's time in the bar, I was in pursuit of a first hand experience in the very space where the genius was realized. I used my imagination to place Dave on the bar's tiny stage, or sitting at the bar sipping Jack, or upstairs (on the third floor) playing a game of pool; this made for a much more rewarding experience, short of the man himself actually showing up. There are no tour guides here, you'll have to guide yourself, and frankly, that's just fine with me. Mid-day, Happy Hour deals for beer and fries. Burger was OK, wings were good. Service was a bit disconnected and confusing .. I couldn't always tell who was working there and who was hanging out. First floor bar, tall table seating, small stage in the very front. Second floor, small room with table seating. Third floor, pool tables with smoking. I will certainly return to Miller's next time I'm in Charlottesville. read more

Got the standard burger and beer option here. Supposedly has the best burgers (according to them)...Angus beef,no hormones, cooked to order (but not how I ordered it). I tried a VA beer on tap...wild coyote or something like that...pretty good...and for happy hour on Wednesdays VA beers were 1/2 off. Now that is a pretty good deal. Came here for a quick meal after hanging out at Monticello. We snagged a table on the top level and enjoyed some decent but nothing to write home about burgers. It was nice seeing a long list of toppings you can add on, though, including avocado, beef chili, and fried egg. Also on the list: peanut butter. I was almost curious enough to try it. It comes with a side, and while they have pretty good fries, I would recommend the grilled asparagus. Nice char grilled flavor. I was surprised to see they had a pool hall up there, too. Very large and space efficient. The best part of the meal was seeing Bell's Kalamazoo porter on the menu. Well done. It was delicious, a perfect pairing with my grub. read more

Dingy indoors but offers outside seating along the mall. I ordered the black & blue ridge dry aged beef burger. I specified it to be medium rare, but it came well done. Consequently, the meat patty was very dry and the toppings failed to overcome the overcooked quality of the meat. However the fries were amazing (currently my favorite in Charlottesville), and Miller's offers 20 oz pours of beer. For that alone, I can recommend Miller's Downtown. read more

Exceptionally bad. We got the Loaded chips. The chips tasted like they were 3 days old and left under a heat lamp to keep them warm. "Thick cut bacon" is a massive exaggeration, to say the least. There were charred bits all over the chips, which made the whole dish taste like the inside of a misused oven. I'd rather eat a raw potato than eat this dish again. The Blackberry Rumble cocktail tasted like a watered down Blackberry La Croix, which is hard to do with anything that's got alcohol in it. Thank god this place had a good liquor selection to wash out the taste of chard chips (I understand they're supposed to be broiled, but broiled and charred taste very different). Miller's sports some slow, slow service -- slow by even Charlottesville standards. But like Rapture, the outdoor seating kept drawing me back... I'm a sucker for drinking outside. Yeah, they've got the DMB history, but they don't flaunt it... in fact, i don't think it's noted anywhere inside the bar. If you're a visitor, don't go expecting to experience some crazy DMB nirvana or something. I usually stop un at Miller's for a cocktail before or after a show or event. Great place to meet friends, and they have one of the best stocked bars in CVille. They even have the occasional rare whiskey or bourbon just ask the bartender. Went to meet up with some friends before the Christmas holiday. The drink selection was great. Started with a cocktail but switched to beer after one drink. Had a beyond burger that was impressively good. I am not vegetarian or vegan but I love switching it up now amd then and I was not disappointed. The house chips are good but did not blow me away. We got the steak sandwich 25 min later, and it was pretty darn good. Waited. Waited. Finally we asked the waitress, who informed us that she was training someone, if our appetizer was coming. She looked puzzled, and asked if we still wanted them. Why wouldn't we? She had asked us about our choice of sauce and seasoning. We then waited. Waited. It was cool visiting the place where the Dave Matthews Band got their start. The decor and staff were authentic and inviting. The location of the restaurant is right in the middle of everything. Wandered into here with a large crowd, including kids but wasn't sure what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised. Pros: 1. Large beer selection 2. Lots of menu options, including vegan options (we had two vegans in our group). 3. DELICIOUS burgers Cons: 1. Limited seating 2. Strong smell of smoke in the building. I have heard mixed thing about Miller's, but finally trying it for myself, It was quite enjoyable! On a Friday night it was hard to find a seat outside, but we were quickly seated inside. I'm glad we ended up inside, as the atmosphere was very old fashioned and swanky and casual at the same time! The service was great, and the burger that I got was fantastic! I had the local, grass fed dry aged beef Miller's burger, and it was delicious- better than expected! I also loved the homemade chips. I thought the prices were good for the quality. Everyone I was there with enjoyed their food as well. The one drawback here was the drink prices. A 12 oz draft felt pretty expensive, and the drink list wasn't hugely extensive. Drink prices are really my only complaint overall, as my experience here was great and I'll definitely be back! read more

We were in town over the New Year's holiday and there were not too many restaurants open on Sunday, New Year's Eve. All the restaurants were serving brunch and we were in the mood for lunch food so we came to Miller's from a recommendation of a local store employee. We had the Tavern chips and I have to be honest... it was probably the best thing we had while in Cville. I am definitely going to be trying to recreate these little heavenly chips at home! Always quick and clean. I love the "surly" wait-staff. It makes C-ville seem soon sophisticated and erudite. The patio is free of patrons, the best is cold (so am I), the food is great, and the joint is jumping. Well worth the trip south. read more
